in Dallas exas at the encouragement of Lauren m rey President engaged with Race Forward

formerly Applied Research enter to consider a grant on race ias and media co erage. hough the timing was not right they continued to explore and expand FF s understanding of racial e uity y attending the Facing Race onference in hicago that fall.

hey felt the strength and importance of this con ening and shared it with the Dallas ased Boone Family Foundation BFF . An introduction was made

oth organi ations new this was ery premature.

ynthia suggested Race Forward consider Dallas as the next site for the Facing Race onference in . Both foundations attended the conference in Baltimore along with other in ited partners and city officials to consider the possi ility of ma ing the offer a reality. Lauren m rey and FF stepped forward as the first host philanthropic partner. he timing was good as Race Forward had een discussing the possi ility of a southern enue ut Dallas had not een on their radar. BFF uic ly followed. A meeting was held in Dallas with local nonprofits and city officials to introduce Rin u to the community and share what the Facing Race onference was.

n addition to offering Facing Race conference at-tendees a Southern perspecti e the confer-ence offered the local community unprecedented access to information and resources on racial e uity. Dallas Faces Race DFR was formed to prepare lo-

cal nonprofit Partners to maximi e their conference experience uild racial e uity capacity and colla -

orate.

FF and BFF decided to expand the DFR planning group to include a group of professional communicators with experience in multicultural campaigns and strong relationships with di erse audiences and community leaders.

After meeting with se eral cohorts of Dallas nonprofit organi ations Race Forward leaders agreed that there was an opportunity to uild capacity for racial e uity.

he areas of Arts & ulture and ducation offered the greatest opportunities to le erage Race Forward s uni ue resources. Based on this assessment DFR started local engagement strategies. FF led the arts and culture wor and BFF led the education wor .

Local nonprofit organi ations were encouraged to partner with DFR to engage in training and capacity

uilding in preparation for Facing Race . FF and BFF grantees were approached first then the target list was expanded. As of August 2015, over

nonprofit organi ations ha e committed to e DFR Partners. The goal was to have 10 to 20 DFR

Partners. Feed ac from nonprofits indicated an unmet need for information and discussion a out racial e uity in the Dallas community.

o participate in the capacity uilding and training opportunities nonprofit organi ations were re uired to ma e a Partnership commitments to the following

1. ngage in racial e uity capacity uilding and colla oration. raining shared resources racial e uity e ent calendar and facilities

2. Allow organization’s name to be listed as a

Partner on the DFR web site and materials.

3. Partners who placed the DFR Proud Partner Logo on their we site were eligi le to apply for scholarships to attend the Facing Race

onference.

Individuals were able to subscribe to DFR information. There is no financial obligation for Partners or subscribers.

Local nonprofits were encouraged to isit httpwww.dallasfacesrace.com to learn more a out local engagement opportunities and resources and to oin the con ersation on Face oo and on witter

DFaceRace.

Partners esta lished goals to ad ance their racial e uity agendas and colla orate with other DFR Partners. Racial ustice Leadership nstitutes were offered to Partners. O er Partners participated in the nstitutes deli ered y Race Forward.

LEARNED PRACTICES

his was an organic process ased on shared alues for human rights. There was no road map. We were shaping and implementing simultaneously. t was a challenge to help Partners understand the role and purpose of DFR. DFR is not an ‘organization’ with a oard of directors mem ers and action agendas. he action is to e dri en y the Partner organi ations. e promoted the phrase Partner is a er to underscore that fact. But due to their traditional experiences Partners often as ed what will DFR do DFR wants Partners to as ow can my organi ation increase our mission dri en impact on racial ustice

In addition to awareness about DFR’s mission and purpose there was a tremendous challenge related to branding DFR. In 2013 and 2014, there were at least four groups using similar names in Dallas, and the Applied Research enter changed its name to Race Forward. All of this was happening at the same time.

The DFR Team determined that the marketing in estment re uired to distinguish the DFR rand was not a smart in estment. So the confusion was tolerated and it did not ad ersely impact DFR results. An infographic was created y DFR to distinguish the competing rands.

t was important to create a rand for the initiati e as an asset and as part of the solution. e were ery

intentional a out calling this y its own name Dallas Faces Race and not using a name that related to the foundations.

hen we uilt a culture around the rand y ha ing community am assadors tal a out race first in the ideos created at the ic off e ent and then with

the Memories that Changed Us” video series with leaders from usiness philanthropy and community. And finally the faces and oices of participants from the training institutes and workshops were added.

he ideos were compiled on the DFR ou u e Channel and promoted through DFR eblasts and social media. All of this was critical to creating a

rand identity. DFR was created in Dallas for Dallas.

he expanded relationship with the host city was an am itious experiment for Race Forward. heir team interfaced much more with Dallas than it did with pre ious conference cities. his was a challenge for Race Forward and for the ery newly formed DFR eam. But e eryone in ol ed em raced the challenge nowing there was great potential in uilding attendance for the first Facing Race conference held in the South and great potential in maximi ing the impact for local nonprofit participants and Dallas in general. All of these goals were met and exceeded. Race Forward has em raced the DFR model for local engagement at their next Facing Race onference in .

Dallas Faces Race (DFR) is the beginning of a sustainable forum on race in Dallas. The forum brings together organizations to actively build their capacity to address racial equity and make change. Dallas Faces Race will mo e eyond discussion groups on race cultural awareness and di ersity. Dallas Faces Race will engage those who are ready to define e uity and colla orate to ma e change.

Dallas residents are 2X as likely to believe racism and racial discrimination will get better in comparison to those who think things will get worse.

By promoting racial equality, we make sure that the best and brightest are moving Dallas forward, regardless of their race. A more diverse Dallas will be a stronger Dallas.
