DAILY JOURNAL Your Home Inside and Out / Spring 2007 11 By Paul Hoffman Home editor T eresa Veach comes from a very artsy family. As a child, she watched very little television. Her parents — Tom and Sharon Gollmer — insisted that their four daughters and one son get involved in a lot of activities and become well-rounded. So, Veach learned how to sew, cook and draw at a young age. She was also involved in all sorts of sports as well as 4-H growing up in the small northeastern Indiana town of Auburn. Her high school’s salutatorian, she went to Taylor University with the intent of becoming a math teacher. But she started taking art classes, too, ended up with a double major in math and art and wound up teaching art at Brownsburg High School for four years. She moved to Fort Wayne when husband Rick got a promotion and had three sons in five years. She started painting murals as a stay-at-home mom and didn’t get serious about it as a professional until about six years ago. “I was painting my kids’ room (full of frogs and bugs) and said to myself ‘I love it. I should do this.’” The owner of Artistic Designs by Teresa, She has painted for clients all over Johnson County as well as Greensburg, Columbus and Greenfield … basically within an hour radius of her home in Shelbyville. Faith matters She said her faith plays a big part in her business. “I’m blessed,” she said. “There’s a lot of people with talent who don’t get work. I’m very grateful for my talent. Every time I go to a job, I say ‘Thank you Lord for the opportunity to work for these people.’” One of her most interesting jobs happened to come at a church. “Every spring, I pray for a real cool job,” Veach said. Last year, Holy Trinity Catholic Church in the near-Westside section of Indianapolis, asked her to do all the ceilings of the church, and some other jobs, as part of its centennial celebration. Veach painted sky on all the ceilings, 70 feet above the floor using a painter’s scaffolding. She painted the archways into the church. There were also the 12 apostles done by an artist maybe 50 years ago and the plaster was crumbling. She was able to fix them by using a base product that was like glue and healed the cracks. The job took three weeks (she had counted on it taking five). “It was awesome,” she said.
