Career Objectives

Pursuing a career in the education sector, I am seeking opportunities that contribute to my experiences and understanding of, and in which I can help further, the continued development of students.

Education

Distinction (predicted) in MA International Security Studies - University of Leicester, 2015- ongoing

Ambitious to further contribute to my subject, I accepted the University's offer of a scholarship, thereby further refining my research and analytical to the postgraduate level.

Utilising my research, my grades have benefitted greatly from how I translate my findings into practical recommendations; a skill transferable to any number of positions.

2:1 in BA International Relations and History - University of Leicester, 2012-2015

I achieved Firsts in a number of modules, including a 79 in the module Political Analysis which taught practical research methods and their implementation in devising research programmes.

Four A-levels grade A-C: History, General Studies, Religious Studies and Government and Politics - SEEVIC College, 2010-2012

Nine GCSES grade A-C including English, Maths and ICT - The Sweyne Park School, 2005-2010

Work Experience

Academic Advisor - University of Leicester Students' Union, 2015- ongoing

In this role I was responsible for supporting my fellow students with an array of issues ranging from illness to domestic abuse.

Accordingly, I have first-hand experience of assisting students in overcoming their concerns, evidencing my awareness of the issues affecting students.

Westminster Office Intern - Rt. Hon. Mark Francois MP, July 2015

Working for a frontbench MP, I honed my administrative skills while undertaking a number of tasks ranging from filing to transcription to finding correct contact details of various organisations; nominally using Microsoft Office.

Information Point Assistant - University of Leicester Students' Union, July 2014 - June 2015

In this combined administrative/retail role I refined my interpersonal and admin skills by interacting with the public, liasoning between departments and recording stock flows on Microsoft Excel.

Working effectively under pressure was essential, often having to quickly uncover information from the University intranet, to provide accurate information on a variety of issues to customers.

Electoral Services Intern - Oadby and Wigston Borough Council, April-May 2015

As part of the Electoral Services Team in the run up to the General Election, I helped ensure that the election process ran smoothly.

This position offered management experience in the training and coordination of the running teams on election night. A major responsibility, given it was the first step in the counting process, which I achieved without issue.

Excellent time management was essential in order to manage myself in a busy environment, taking responsibility for my own workload's timely completion.

Extra-Curricular Activities

Student Co-Chair - University of Leicester Personal Tutor Review Working Group

A position of responsibility, I was head-hunted by a member of Union's Senior Management Team to represent the student body as co-chair on a University committee tasked with reviewing the personal tutor system.

Actively participating with a Higher Education institution to improve its pastoral support, I chaired a sub-group designing an infographic for tutors to refer to while also participating in another devising training regimes for personal tutors.

Achievements

Actively improving service, I noticed a gap in the Union's engagement with postgraduates. I proposed a weekly advice session be held at the postgraduate campus, a policy adopted by the Union.

As part of my Academic Advisor training I gained level 2 qualifications in Equality and Diversity, Safeguarding Young People.

I have been short-listed for the award of University of Leicester Students' Union Employee of the Year 2016.

Key Skills

Critical Analysis

As a part of my degree I learned to analyse both quantitative and qualitative data. This is an important skill as it involves deep engagement with the work at hand, understanding its strengths and

weaknesses so as knowing how to improve.

Originality/Innovative

I have been commended for my research's depth and originality. For example, conducting discourse analysis on the use of language in EU energy legislation for insight into the passive-aggressiveness of Russo-EU relations for an essay on Russia's position in the international system.

I've been praised for an original analytical approach; for example, structuring an essay on South African foreign policy into a multi-layered framework spanning theoretical, domestic and international levels of analysis.

This originality, I believe, translates well into any position in which I will be responsible for devising programmes for people to follow, whether it be a research or personal development model.

Interpersonal Skills - Including excellent oral and written communication

At the Student's Union I regularly worked with a large contingent of international students, necessitating clear communication. This is something I translate into my writing, strengthening my argument with a focus on clarity.

Interpersonal skills are a matter of conduct as well as communication and I feel my time at Oadby and Wigston in a busy office at a busy time shows my ability to conduct myself in a professional matter.

Time Management

In April 2015 I had competing commitments to an essay, my dissertation, and two jobs. Yet, by prioritising tasks I excelled in each of these commitments, achieving high grades and being given management duties in each position.

Interests

A trained historian, I regularly find myself reading political history texts, most recently about Anglo-Irish relations.

Stemming from my interest in political history, I have published short-stories on alternate history which have gone on to provide a small revenue stream.

Another area of interest is in the sciences, which I often cross over with my background in a social subject. For example, reading about the social implications of the latest technological advances.

A savvy user of social media, having utilised it to run political campaigns and promote student blogs.
