  • DIRECTOR'S NOTES

New Year's Eve. 1929. Berlin. Germany. Inflation is high. The Depression extends its stranglehold through Europe and the U.S. The Banks are failing, but the Cabarets are full of party goers ... a frenzy of distraction ... people scramble for some gaiety, no matter how thinly it covers the surface ... anything to dull the growing sense of unease. Political persuasions abound-Communism, Nazism-Nationalism is ga ining popularity with a vengeance ... the victims are looking for v ictims. Meanwhile, ordinary, and 'extraordinary.' people. young and old. try to l ive their lives, run their businesses. and plan futures together. (Can the private person stay separate from the public, the social from the pol iticall)

The fabric of soc iety starts to tear. love is t rivialized. human respect is denigrated, and violence becomes the accepted means that justifies the end.
