Presents Holiday Shop & Stroll Downtown NB On December 2, 4PM-7PM, and December 3, 10AM-4PM, New Bedford area residents are invited to stroll the festively decorated cobblestoned streets of the Whaling City’s downtown, to shop locally for holiday gifts, hear caroling, dine out, jump aboard firetruck rides, meet Santa and more.

SATURDAY, DECEMBER 2ND & SUNDAY, DECEMBER 3RD

A New England Nutcracker New Bedford Ballet, 2343 Purchase Street Journey back to the 1850s, as this favorite holiday story is reimagined through New Bedford’s historic whaling era, and prepare for the “City That Lit the World” to light up your holiday season. 1:30PM and 3PM

SATURDAY, DECEMBER 2ND

City of New Bedford Tree Lighting William Street & Pleasant Street Join Mayor Jon Mitchell, New Bedford City Councilors and the New Bedford community for the annual tree lighting celebration! At 4:30PM Santa and Mrs. Claus will lead a parade up William Street to the Main Library. The parade will feature the award-winning New Bedford High School Whaler Marching Band and the All-City Middle School Marching Band and Color Guard. The countdown celebration will begin at 5:00PM and will feature holiday songs by New Bedford Choral Society and greetings from elected officials with an appearance by Santa Claus!

SATURDAY, DECEMBER 2ND

Mayor Mitchell’s Classic Movie Series Zeiterion Theatre, 684 Purchase Street

Mayor Mitchell invites you to a free showing of the iconic holiday movie IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE following the conclusion of the City of New Bedford Tree Lighting. Come inside the warm theater and relive the classic Christmas tale of a man who finds out what life would have been like if he had never existed. 7PM

SUNDAY, DECEMBER 3RD

Cookies and Paws Buttonwood Park Zoo, 425 Hawthorne Street Let your kids’ imagination GO WILD as they decorate their very own paw print sugar cookies! Your child will enjoy up-close interactions with some of the Zoo’s animal ambassadors while they demonstrate their artistic abilities using candy canes, gum drops, brightly colored icing, and so much more! 10AM-11:30AM


A Very Electric Christmas Zeiterion Theatre, 684 Purchase Street Brighten your holiday with this magical and captivating tale of family, friendship and hope set to timeless holiday hits including Nat King Cole, Mariah Carey and Tchaikovsky. 2PM

Breakfast with Santa Buttonwood Park Zoo Enjoy a delicious breakfast buffet then have a meet and greet with Santa and some of the Zoo’s favorite resident animals. Custom House Square Downtown NB/William Street and Acushnet Avenue Downtown will be full of holiday spirit, with an array of festive activities in and around Custom House square including: Free horse drawn carriage rides and pictures with Mr. & Mrs. Claus on the big red sled. 1PM-5PM


NBSO Family Holiday Pops Zeiterion Theatre, 684 Purchase Street Join the NBSO for a family holiday treat! Our wonderful orchestra will perform a fun children’s matinee and a festive evening concert, with appearances by our Youth Orchestra and the Showstoppers. 3:30PM and 7PM


Polar Express Night New Bedford YMCA, 25 S Water Street Watch the 2004 hit movie based on the beloved children’s book by Chris Van Allsburg, make a take home craft, and have some yummy snacks (open to the general public)! Drop off for parents children ages 5-10; children under 5, parents required to stay. 5:30PM-8:00PM

Christmas Candlelight Service Seamen’s Bethel, 15 Johnny Cake Hill The public is cordially invited to attend the annual Christmas Candlelight Service at the Seamen’s Bethel. Reverend Paul Wheeler will conduct the service, while music will be performed by Sisters in Song and Bethel organist, Frank Medeiros. 4PM

City Celebrates! New Year’s Eve Downtown NB/Custom House Square Ring in the New Year with fire eaters, stilt walkers, live music, delicious food, and many more festive activities in and around Custom House Square from 5PM-8PM. Don’t miss the spectacular FIREWORKS display from State Pier on the working waterfront at 8:30PM.

New Year’s Eve Bash New Bedford Whaling Museum, 18 Johnny Cake Hill The New Year’s Eve Bash is an after dinner celebration complete with a spectacular fireworks display, desserts and savory treats, dancing, and cocktails! Music by The Becky Chace Band. See New Bedford’s fireworks display from the warm comforts of the Harbor View Gallery, and enjoy a complimentary champagne toast and balloon drop at 10PM.


Festival of Lights Celebration Clasky Common Park Join the countdown celebration to illuminate festive displays of dazzling lights throughout Clasky Common Park. Members of the Parker Elementary School chorus will perform and Santa Claus is expected to join the celebration! 5PM

Santa Sightings 5k Run/Walk MacArthur Boulevard A fun and festive 5K Run/Walk. Hundreds of runners in Santa suits will run the USATF certified course along the working waterfront. Registration Required. 12:30PM


A Christmas Carol Zeiterion Theatre, 684 Purchase Street This celebrated adaptation of Charles Dickens’ classic is an ensemble musical that thrills Zeiterion patrons year after year. 2PM & 7PM


26th Annual Holiday House Tour Wamsutta Club, 427 County Street Capture the holiday spirit on the New Bedford Preservation Society’s 26th Annual Holiday House Tour. Visitors will be inspired by the varied architecture and interiors, all beautifully decorated for the season. Always popular on the tour are the costumed historic interpreters greeting visitors at one of the historic homes. Saturday 4PM-8PM, Sunday 1PM-5PM.
