Technology has shaped the way we communicate, interact and participate in the world around us. Just like us, it is constantly evolving, adapting, impacting how we approach daily tasks, problem solve and further, inspire new technological innovations.

One can argue that technology has become a basic necessity in most people’s lives. For example can be our cell phones. (How many people have their cell phone attached to their hips?!) Accessibility- through technology devices has forever altered the way we receive information (input/process/output). This powerpoint will review how technology makes us a marketing tool, unites demographics and creates targets.

Technology has enabled globalizationGlobalization: “Globalization is the changing of the world from many economies, cultures and societies into a single one. The term is primarily used to refer to economic globalization. However, it is also used to address political and social changes around the world. Globalization is extremely controversial. There are many positive and negative impacts from its spread.”

Pro: “Studies have shown that being part of a social network has a positive impact, including increased quality of life and a reduction in the risk of health problems. They help improve stroke recovery, memory retention, and overall well-being”.

Pro: “Twitter was so important to the Iranian protests after the Iranian presidential election in June 2009 that the US State Department asked Twitter to delay a scheduled network upgrade that would have taken the website offline at a busy time of day in Iran. Twitter complied and rescheduled the downtime to 1:30 am Tehran time”.

Con: “Social networking sites entice people to spend more time online and less time interacting face-to-face. The sites offer many time wasting activities that supplant more productive activities. Teens spend an average of nine hours per week on social networking sites”

Con: Consider employment searches on social media sites………..

…“Teens growing up with these sites may not be aware that the information they post is public and that photos and text can be retrieved even after deletion. Consequences from over-sharing personal information include vulnerability to sexual or financial predators and lost job opportunities from employers finding embarrassing photos or comments”.

Technology has changed the way we find, get and maintain job opportunities. Technology can make-or-break you in terms of whether or not you are “qualified” for the job. In the 21st century most jobs require you to be computer literate or technologically savvy

Technology has allowed electronic job search through collective databasesIt changes the way companies advertise for job openings as well as how people apply for the jobs (Example: Job Bank Canada, workopolis, etc)- Accessibility to information is important- applying for the job in the manner requested, often via e-mail, is what makes you eligible

Technology can be your friend but it is crucial to be have media awareness(IMPORTANT TO NOTE: elementary school curriculum was adapted to include media literacy as a critical part of visual language studies). -Searches have evolved to be personalized and logs computer search histories.

On the left, we have advertisers and agencies, the buyers. On the right, we have the searchers, our target audience. The search engines are the marketplace we use to reach them. Layered between the advertisers/agencies and the searchers are the tools we use to measure, manage, and automate various components of our marketing, divided into nine buckets:

Keyword Research:Competitive AnalysisDisplay Research Performance Marketing PlatformsNiche ToolsTesting & PersonalizationAnalytics - QualitativeAnalytics – QuantitativeCustomer Relationship Management (http://searchenginewatch.com/article/2066655/Making-the-Leap-The-Paid-Search-Marketing-Toolbox)

“Culture jamming is often seen as a form of subvertsing. Many culture jams are intended to expose apparently questionable political assumptions behind commercial culture. Common tactics include re-figuring logos, fashion statements, and product images as a means to challenge the idea of "what's cool" along with assumptions about the personal freedoms of consumption.Culture jamming sometimes entails transforming mass media to produce ironic or satirical commentary about itself, using the original medium's communication method”.(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Culture_jamming)

Culture Jamming is important because it challenges consumers ideas of what is being “proposed” to them.. Buy here, shop here, etc. It is a ironic marketing tool that also speaks to a different target audience

Page 14: Cumming media assignment post

Not only has technology made this course possible as we interact online together through blackboard posts and assignments (further increasing accessibility and flexibility for students) Georgian College as an Educational Institute is very invested in advertising using mass media through our www.georgianc.on.ca/ website but also on YouTube for example

Page 15: Cumming media assignment post

It is important to consider both the pros and cons that comes from developing technologies and the impact this will have on our everyday lives

Technology has continued to reshape our interactions with others, our working opportunities and consumerism on a larger scale

It is crucial that we continue to educate ourselves on media literacy as it continues impact us through marketing tools, fostering and uniting demographics (globalization factor) but also with an awareness of possible targeting (strategic consumerism tactics, etc.)
