WHAT IS A CSA?When you join a CSA (community supported agriculture), you make a financial commitment to a farm (usually before the growing season begins) and receive a weekly basket of produce.
WHAT IS LOCAL? While there are many different definitions (in terms of the distance the food travels to get to our plates), we favor one that defines it as the farms and farmers markets in our community or local counties, because it means we are supporting local economies by keeping our dollars circulating locally. Supporting local farmers also helps to keep our taxes down because agricultural lands require very little in services.

Local Food = Local ViewsCroftburn Farm, CulpeperLocal Food = Local ViewsCroftburn Farm, Culpeper
At Croftburn Farm, flocks of sheep and herds of cattle graze in wide green pastures on either side of Route 3, just
outside of the Town of Culpeper—so the farm offers local residents both pastoral views and healthy, quality meats.
The animals are raised humanely in open fields, without the use of hormones or animal by-products, and the final products are all natural, without fillers or additives. Meg Campbell, the farmer, says that her customers can taste the difference, compared to factory farmed meat. People tell her that Croftburn’s meat tastes the way they remember from when they were kids, that a hamburger really tastes like a hamburger. “The quality of the meat sells itself,” she says. “It’s real food.”
Customers can purchase the meat, as well as other foods from local farms, at Croftburn Market,
which Meg’s son Andrew recently opened on Braggs Corner Road, just off Route 29.
The Campbells aim to provide good, healthy food at a price that people can afford. While they can’t match the prices of mainstream grocery stores, Meg says, that comparison doesn’t account for the hidden costs of cheap food, in lost flavor and health impacts, and even environmental impacts. “Everybody should be entitled to high quality food at a fair price,” she says. “And they should have access to local food, so there is more of a connection between the farm and the producer and the consumer.”
People choose to live in Culpeper because of its bucolic, rural setting, she points out. A strong local food movement helps to keep the landscape that way. “People need to invest in buying local, so the local farmers can stay here and continue to farm, so they can take the pleasure of living in a rural place.”

FARMERS MARKETS
10 TIPS for shopping at a farmers market:1. Shop early for the best selection.
2. Or shop later for a greater possibility of good deals.
3. Cash is easiest and small bills are helpful, though some markets may take credit/checks.
4. Bring a cooler with ice. On hot summer days this saves the freshness of your purchases during multiple errands.
5. Bring your own sturdy bags to cut down on plastic bag usage. A cart might save multiple trips to your car.
6. Get to know the farmers—ask questions about their food, recipe suggestions and storage tips.
7. It’s easy to overbuy—coordinate your purchases with meal plans for the week.
8. Plan your meals around produce seasons and availability.
9. Let your kids pick out foods and they may be more willing to try healthy new foods.
10. Consider stocking up on your favorites and learn to freeze or can to enjoy your local food in the off-seasons.

On several acres of bottom land bordering the Robinson River in Culpeper County, James and Holly Hammond grow
hundreds of varieties of about 30 kinds of vegetables and herbs—an abundance of flavors for their customers to discover.
In the spring, they offer four types of radishes that they say are surprisingly popular, as well as small, tender salad turnips—crunchy with a fresh, mild flavor. Spring and early summer also bring a wide assortment of carrots, beets, kale, chard, cab-bage, lettuce, peas, scallions, and spinach.
In midsummer, a rainbow of tomatoes grows ripe—yellow, purple, orange, green, red, and pink varieties, including many heirlooms. One favorite is the Green Zebra—bright green with golden stripes and a tangy, zesty, flavor. Plus there are all of the peppers, cucumbers, eggplants, garlic, and more.
The bounty of summer harvests stretches into fall, and cooler weather brings back the crisp spring flavors, with the addition of winter squash, arugula, and a spicy green called mizuna.
James and Holly sell their food at farmers mar-kets in Culpeper and Charlottesville. Customers can also join their CSA (for “community supported agriculture”), and pick up a share of freshly picked seasonal food every week from June through October.
Whisper Hill is a new farm, entering its third season. Both James and Holly come from farm-ing backgrounds, in Arizona and North Carolina. As interns at Waterpenny Farm in Rappahannock, they learned how to run a successful, locally-ori-ented produce farm. As they were preparing to launch Whisper Hill, they also took the Exploring the Small Farm Dream course offered by the Piedmont Environmental Council. Now, they come back to the course as guest speakers, helping other aspir-ing farmers to get their start.
Holly and James say there is nothing they would rather do than farm. Holly says, “So many people, when you talk to them, say ‘Oh, it can’t be done.’ And then we worked at it, and we’re like, ‘Actually it can be done.’”

Mark your calendars for the Annual Fauquier Fall Farm Tour,
October 13, 2012!
NORTHERN PIEDMONT
This is a recipe from Brightwood Vineyard and Farm... A scrumptious summertime treat for breakfast,
brunch or dessert. We hope you enjoy!
Custardy Oven-Puffed Berry Pancake
3 Tbsp unsalted grass-fed butter
¾ cup unbleached all-purpose flour
½ tsp salt
3 Brightwood Vineyard & Farm eggs
1 cup grass-fed milk
1 tsp pure vanilla extract
1 cup Brightwood Vineyard & Farm berries
Preheat oven to 450. Combine flour and salt in a large mixing bowl. In another bowl, whisk the eggs, milk and vanilla together. Add the wet to the dry ingredients and whisk until combined and smooth. Place butter in 12-inch oven-proof cast iron skillet and put in the oven to melt the butter. When the butter starts to bubble, remove the pan and pour the batter in the hot skillet. Sprinkle the berries on the batter in an even layer. Bake until the batter turns light brown and puffs around the edges, 12-25 minutes. Remove the skillet and carefully lift the custardy pancake onto a platter. Serve as wedges with local honey or maple syrup.
The farms on this map are open to the public for regular hours. Refer to listings in guide
for farm and farmers’ markets hours.

What does “organic” mean when buying local foods? Produce grown without the use of pesticides and synthetic fertilizers, sewage sludge or genetically modified organisms. Meat and eggs grown free of antibiotics and growth hormones. Many local farmers use organic methods and may be "certified organic," "certified naturally grown," or not certified. Ask your farmers for specifics.

The Piedmont Environmental Council works with citizens to keep Virginia’s Piedmont a wonderful
place—by protecting beautiful and historic landscapes, building great communities, promoting local farms and food, restoring natural resources, and connecting people with nature.
As we celebrate our 40th anniversary, we are pleased to have helped citizens protect nearly 350,000 acres in our nine-county region with voluntary conservation easements—one of the most dramatic private land conservation success stories in America.
Check out our website if you want to:
