High quality recognitionl Sedgefield were successful in

3 catagories at the CountyDurham Sport and PhysicalActivity Awards.

Key Observations: l Local strategic priorities focus

on the provision of activity forchildren and young people.

l There is a wealth of greenspace available for public use, such as Hardwick Park, theCastle Eden Walkway, etc.

l There are pockets of very lowparticipation in sport andphysical activity, which doesnot correlate to the availabilityof facilities or opportunities tobe active, suggesting that amore tailored approach isneeded.

l A high proportion of residentswithin the Sedgefieldpopulation live within deprivedwards and the percentage ofobesity within adults is alsohigh. There is therefore acorrelation between socialdemographic and sportsparticipation levels, reflectiveof Sport England marketsegmentation models.

5

Local Demand forSport andPhysical ActivityCurrent participation in sportand physical activity is notconsistent across the patch (seeTable 1), nor are the area’sdemographics. Sport England’smarket segmentation helps usunderstand the life stages andattitudes of different populationgroups and the sportinginterventions most likely toengage them. The mostdominant market segmentswithin Sedgefield are Elsie &Arnold, Brenda and Kev, (whotend to be least active), andPhilip and Tim (who tend to bemost active). There is correlationbetween the distribution ofthese segments, deprivationand activity levels, whichfluctuate considerably from areato area, (although overallparticipation in sport andphysical activity is lower thancounty average across most ofthe patch). Table 1 highlightsparticipation levels and thesports most likely to engage thevarious groups.
