Introduction to CSIR

What is CSIR?

CSIR is one of the leading scientific and technology research, development and implementation organisations in Africa. Constituted by an Act of Parliament in 1945 as a science council, CSIR undertakes directed and multidisciplinary research, technological innovation as well as industrial and scientific development to improve the quality of life of the country’s people.

• 2 411 members of staff • 1 575 in Science Engineering Technology (SET) base

• 300 Doctorates • 93 staff supported for doctoral studies

• 499 Master’s • 103 staff supported for Master’s studies

• 48.5 % of SET base black (SA) • 32% of SET base female (SA)
