TWO TEENS LOST AT SEA

The community of Jupiter, Florida held out hope for

Austin Stephanos and Perry Cohen, the two 14 year old

teens missing at sea since Friday, 24 July, as the Coast

Guard began talking about when the search could end.

The Coast Guard had five cutters, a Navy ship and mul-

tiple planes involved in the search. As of Thursday morning, rescuers had

searched more than 40,000 square nautical miles. That's an area roughly the

size of Arkansas.

The Coast Guard will continue searching the ocean off more than 400 miles

of coastline between Daytona, Florida, and Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

Marine experts estimate that someone could survive in the warm Atlantic

waters for up to five to six days this time of year. The boys were last seen

Friday, 24 July.

The situation has grown increasingly dire since the teens' boat was found

Sunday, capsized 67 nautical miles (about 77 miles) off Florida's Ponce de

Leon Inlet, well north of Jupiter.

While the boys are young, they were legally operating the boat. Florida reg-

ulations say a person must be at least 14 to operate a watercraft.

Austin and Perry were last seen Friday near Jupiter buying $110 in gasoline

for their boat.

About the same time the boys were heading out to sea, the National Weath-

er Service was posting special marine warnings telling boaters to seek shel-

ter. The National Weather Service said the boys were probably in the mid-

dle of 38 mph winds and thunderstorms.

A spokesman for the Coast Guard said “Storms are the experience every-

body lacks. Someone might be a skilled boater, but when a squall pops up,

you might find yourself in trouble in a short amount of time.”

The search pattern has spread northward with the passage of time and the

flow of the Gulf Stream.

This story points out the importance of the work that we do providing safe

boating courses to our community. The water can be a dangerous place and

it is imperative that you have the knowledge and the skills to deal with criti-

cal situations.

Always be aware of the weather, have life jackets for everyone, have a

marine radio, file a plan with someone, keep your boat maintained, have it

vessel safety checked to make sure it has all the necessary equipment.

We’ve been following this story and keep hoping and praying there will be

a positive outcome.

What’s Knot in the News

Our speakers bureau - Leon Warshaw, Julie

Clarke and Phil Chaikin with some creative sugges-

tions from Barbara Wolfe, have been working hard

to update their presentations of the SPSS/USPS

story for the public. They have booked twice as

many public presentations as last year. Congratulations - GREAT JOB.

The 2016 Commander’s Get Away Cruise bookings are off and running

at a record pace. Over 50 folks have booked their cabins in the first 30

days!! Thank You. The early bird booking specials have been extended

until 31 August. Check for those specials in this issue of the South

Wind, on our Facebook page and on our website or call Shirley or

Monica at Golden Anchor Travel for the latest deals at (941) 922-4070.

Have you seen the new display in the hallway leading to the radio room

office—WOW— Sylvia Wedge put

a lot of creative thinking into that

informative section of the building—

stop and check it out. Thanks Sylvia

and probably Capt. Mike too!

This week I was at the Venice Yacht

Club touring Chris and Mary Mes-

senger’s beautiful Main Ship 34

Expedition soon to be named Glory,

great boat folks and thanks for the tour. We ran into SPSS member

Capt. Kevin Moynihan, AP. Kevin has started a new business adventure

using his beautiful 42 Silverton Utopia for charter work. Kevin will be

offering sunset cruises, Casey Key to Sarasota cruises and custom cruis-

es. So in January when the grandkids come to Florida give them a real

treat with a cruise on the Utopia from Casey Key to Marina Jack on

Thursday and join us for lunch. I’m betting Capt. Kevin could put that

package together for you. Call Capt. Kevin at (518) 260-7638.

Thanks to all the NEW members who attended the open house on Satur-

day, 1 August. It was great to meet such enthusiastic and creative folks.

Many thanks to Lt/C Richard Winston and, of course, the “Boss” at his

house, Murdell, for all their hard work in organizing the event and all

the volunteers who made it such a success. Here is a message we

received from one of the new member’s afterward --“Sue and Bud, I

think you guys, and the Bridge, did a great job with the Open House on

Saturday. My only regret was that it didn’t last longer. As you may

recall, Bob Holmes suggested that I ride along on a few of the Co-Op

Charting trips as an opportunity to learn more about the local waters.

I’ve sent him an email to tell him I’d welcome an opportunity to do that.

Also, Richard Winston mentioned in the meeting that he could always

use a few more VSC inspectors. Since I’ve owned 11 different boats

over the past 34 years I told him I might be qualified to help out with

this (though I admitted to him that I have no experience with sailboats).

This might be a way for me to start helping out.”

Have a GREAT DAY ON THE WATER!

SPIRIT AWARD HONORS

P/Lt/C EDMUND STRAUSS, SN

Our congratulations to P/Lt/C Edmund

Strauss, SN, or Ed as most of us call him,

in receiving the well deserved Spirit of

SPSS Award.

As a member of the squadron for 32 years

and earning 28 merit marks he has con-

tributed to the organization in many ways.

Before there were power point programs

with which to teach classes he was Chair-

man on what was called the local boating

board—which physically set up the room

for classes, ordering texts, materials and

teaching aids. He was also what was

known as a table instructor for the eight

week boating class which could have as

many as 100 students.

He served as Assistant SEO for three

years and then as SEO for three more

years. He served on the Trust Committee

for 9 years and chaired it.

Ed has served on the Circulation

(mailing) Committee for the South Wind

for many years and is still a mainstay on

it. Thank you Ed for all of your efforts!

Piloting Classes

PILOTING CLASSES BEGIN

Monday, 5 OCTOBER 2015

Piloting is the first course in the sequence of USPS courses on naviga-

tion, covering the basics of coastal and inland navigation. This course

focuses on navigation as it is done on recreational boats today and uses

GPS as a primary navigation tool while teaching traditional techniques so

a student will be able to find his/her way even if the GPS fails. This

course includes many in-class exercises, developing the student’s skills

through hands-on practice.

Topics include:

Charts and their interpretation

Navigation aids and how they point to safe water

Plotting courses and determining direction and distance

The mariner’s compass and converting between True and Magnetic

How charts are made and how the different charts are used

Use of GPS – typical GPS displays and information they provide,

setting up waypoints and routes, staying on a GPS route

Pre-planning safe courses and entering them into a GPS

Monitoring progress and determining position by both GPS and tra-

ditional techniques such as bearing and dead reckoning

The ‘Seaman’s Eye” – simple skills for checking that one is on

course

Classes will begin at 1830 (6:30 PM) and will be held each Monday for

approximately 10 weeks. The cost of all books and navigation kit

(including a plotter, protractor and a divider) is $80.00 for SPSS mem-

bers, $109 for Partner Organizations and $120 for non-members.

If you are interested, please call me at (941) 924-5253 or e-mail me at

[email protected] by 15 September 2015, as I need to order

enough books and navigation kits for everyone in the class.

By Ken & Ann Shanley

Solomons, MD

26 June 2015 37.1 sm today

Final Day (from my blog) - we departed Smith Point Ma-

rina, near Reidsville, VA, just after 0700 with a forecast

of less than 10 mph winds and seas less that 1 ft. What a

surprise we had as we got out into the Chesapeake.

Winds 20-25 mph and 2-3 occasional 4 ft. waves directly

on the bow. One of the worst if not the worst day we

have had.

Charis arrived in Solomons, MD, crossing her wake

(point where we started) at 1200 accompanied by our

friends, John & Kathy Scott on Serenity.

We purchased Charis the winter of 2011 in Solomons,

MD, where she was stored for the winter. We launched

her in the spring of 2012 and spent all summer exploring

the Chesapeake and learning the boat. We again stored

her for the winter in Solomons.

2013 we cruised up the Hudson where many of us were

stuck as the Erie Canal was closed due to flooding. We

eventually traveled north through Lake Champlain to

Sorel, up the St. Lawrence to Montreal, the Ottawa River

to Ottawa, the Rideau Canal to Kingston, the Thousand

Islands and finally back down the Oswego Canal to

Brewerton, NY, where we stored the boat for another

winter.

2014 found us on the Trent Severn, Georgian Bay, North

Channel, the west coast of Michigan, down the rivers to

Mobile and across the Gulf of Mexico to our home near

Venice, FL. Charis spent the winter there docked at

Fisherman's Wharf Marina.

2015 found us departing the end of March crossing Lake

Okeechobee then up the east coast to Solomons, Mary-

land. We plan to spend the 4th of July at the Capitol

Yacht Club in Washington, DC. Then we will start back

down the east coast for home.

All in all it has taken 4 years

to travel 5753 statue miles

and traverse 167 locks. In

those 4 years we have met so

many wonderful people and

enjoyed so many beautiful

places.
