3 FROM THE PRESIDENT By Dave Edens

FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER By Craig Sloane

We are wrapping up the summer. By the time you read this, Crest League finals will be over (hopefully we won), we’ll just be starting YAP session 2, and many of us are on vacation. However, I would ask you to think about something during this month. It is time to think about service to the Club. I started these articles in January talking about service. Over the next few months, we will be establishing membership on the Committees as well as the Board. These changes will all be solidified in November at the Annual Meeting. A lot is going on at the Club, and this is your opportu-nity to help shape the future of ATCC. Let Craig, any Board member, any Committee member, or myself know if you are interested in participating. You can also check the website to get the Board and Committee membership lists. There are a few items that you should be watching for over the next couple of months as well. Look for a new menu by Chef John. He has been working with the kitchen staff and the Food & Beverage Committee to roll out some new ideas. Progress is being made on the Fitness Center. Craig has started discussion with the county about the possible impacts on our Conditional Use Permit. We are gathering proposals from the Ten-nis Committee for the upper courts and drainage.

Lastly, we will be doing some work on our on-going sewer issues. As we continue through our Centennial Year, here are a few more notes on our history: February 14, 1947 - Formal inaugural celebration: Club opens its doors to a capacity crowd for a black-tie dinner and dance. September 1947 - Swimming pool is dedicated with 200 members attending the festivities. 1947-1948 - The Club’s Board adds three new tennis courts to the east, and resurfaces the two original courts. Fall 1948 - ATCC sponsors a giant community carni-val with the swimming pool as a focus, to raise money for the Eliot Junior High School playground lighting project. 5,000 attend. Please feel free to let me know of any concerns or comments, both good and bad. My email address is [email protected].

We’ve made it over the summer hump and into August. The first session of YAP is behind us with more great activities planned for the second session. Our Dolphin Swim Team brought home their 18th consecutive championship, and the junior tennis program and academy continue to work up a sweat during these fortunately milder summer temperatures. As we look ahead to the Fall (did I say that), I am excited about the interest I am seeing from our membership regard-ing committee involvement. As an organization owned by its membership, committee governance is a key component of our continued success. August is a time when we provide our members with the opportunity to learn more about the Club’s committee structure and its overall operations. We have so many talented professionals amongst our member-ship community, it is my hope that becoming a part of a committee is something you would consider as a “plus” to your membership experience.

We have eight standing committees and two executive com-mittees. Those of you with young children might want to consider the Youth or Swim committees. If you have a back-ground in design or construction, for example, the House and Grounds Committee is calling out to you. Those who would like to be a part of meeting potential new members or giving direction to membership growth should consider the Mem-bership Committee. If your background is in Finance or Hu-man Resources, we’ve got a committee well suited for your expertise. If you have a knack for planning events, then So-cial Committee might be of interest. Of course, the wildly popular Tennis or Food & Beverage Committees are also available. Regardless of your background, we would love to have your participation. Find attached some basic committee informa-tion and the committee interest form. Please complete the form and return to the office as soon as convenient.

4 FOOD & BEVERAGE COMMITTEE REPORT By Rebecca Sales

July was a month of terrific food related events! We met our new Chef John on July 2nd during our 4th of July celebration. The food was delicious, the event well organized, and the fireworks better than ever. Kudos to the staff for putting on such a wonderful celebration. More than 70 people came out for the World Cup Final event. The game brought out the soccer fans, and the South African food brought out the foodies. We all enjoyed the meal and beer while watching Spain win! Thanks to Claus Ersbak for suggesting and coordinating this event, and Chef John for preparing an excellent meal. Look for future parties related to major sporting events!!! Chef John is preparing a new menu which will debut in early August. He presented the draft menu to the Food and Beverage Committee to review, and we can hardly wait to try all the yummy new items. Don’t worry, some of the Club favorites will still be available. Just imagine, sitting on the Terrace with the sun setting, a terrific view of the mountains, a glass of your favorite, and a new menu to order from! All Good. Be sure to mark October 23rd on your calendar for the Tablas Creek Wine Tasting Dinner. The Tablas Creek wines are excellent, and this event is sure to fill up quickly!!!

August Specials

WEDNESDAYS: Buy an entrée and get dessert for free! THURSDAYS: Free Corkage for the month of August!

Fine Wines Reserve List By Michael Smith One of the objectives of the Wine Committee during the past six months has been to create a Reserve List of fine wines for our members. Parallel to offering fine wines, we want to provide great value to the members. We are well on our way to accomplishing these goals. The world is awash in wine and we have purchased sev-eral sensational wines at auction and offer these wines to members at tremendous prices. Members pay only a 20% mark-up from our purchase price. Our Reserve List now has thirteen offerings; five white, seven red and one dessert. Please enjoy the 1983 Chateau Prieure Lichine. Remy and his staff will decant this spectacular wine at your table. Take one small sip immediately and then let the wine take in the night air for at least thirty minutes. You will experience a transition from what appears to be a tart, tannic and tired wine to a silky wonder of enjoyment for the senses. This wine is priced at $48 for the members. If you could find it at a restaurant it would be priced close to $300. For those that are looking to enjoy a white wine; please savor one of our white burgundies. The two 2006 Chassagne

Montrachet (Clos de la Truffiere and Les Vergers) are a marriage of white flowers and citronella with a hint of limestone. Purchased at auction at a sensational price; they are a wonderful value at $58 and $65 respectively. We purchased six magnums of the 2003 Pontet Canet from the Margaux region of Bordeaux. Our own Mi-chael Williamson has enjoyed the wine and noted it is “spectacular!” Perfect for a dinner party of four, the wine is priced at $167. There are many gems on the list but of special note is the 2001 Chateau Rieussec. The wine is from the Sauternes region of Bordeaux and is the perfect end to one of Chef John’s magnificent meals. Wine Spectator rated the wine a perfect 100 and the number 1 wine of their 2004 review. The wine is sensational today but will continue to improve and in-tensify with the trademark Rieussec character of hon-eyed citrus.

8 PRO’S CORNER By Paul Click Tennis and the Art of War Head Tennis Pro

Last week we talked about the net person, or the server’s partner. This week, let’s talk about the receiver’s partner. Of the four basic positions, (server, receiver, server's partner and receiver's partner) you will see that this position, receiver's partner, is by far the most complicated and important to learn. To see why, let’s look at all your different jobs.

1. Your job is to initially stand in a position near the center of the court, so that you can cover the middle, which is where the ball is likely to go if the receiver hits the ball to the net person. Do not leave this position until you are certain that the return will not be hit by the net person. 2. Your job is to call the service line for you partner. Let the re-ceiver call the other lines, when possible, and you just concentrate on the service line.

3. Your job is to not look back at your partner as they hit the return. Instead, watch the opposing net person, as that is the biggest threat. Assume that the return will go to the net person, so that you are always prepared. 4. Your job, when your partner is successful in returning the ball to the server, and the server stays back, is to immediately move for-ward to an attack position, while at the same time covering your alley. If the server returns the ball to your partner, who has stayed back, then you should retreat to your initial position, as things will be the same as when your partner first returned the ball. With this in mind, you can see that if a cross-court rally ensues, then you are constantly moving forward and toward the alley, and then retreating back, toward the middle. 5. Your job, when your partner is successful in returning the ball to the server, and the server moves forward, is to take a couple of steps toward your alley, to cover the alley from the attacking server. 6. Your job, when your partner is successful in returning the ball to the server, and the server moves forward, is to watch the height of the server’s racket as it moves to the ball. If the server’s racket is moving down toward the ground, indicating a low volley or half-volley, you should move forward to attack the “up” ball from the server. If the server’s racket is moving up high, indicating an at-tacking shot, then assume your “battle stance” and try to protect yourself and your alley. As you can see, there is a lot going on at this position. So stay alert and see if you can handle all of these “jobs!” Until next time, the ball’s in your court!
