The annual activity report of Esprit is the sum of the policies set by the top management. In 2015-2016, many projects have come into being:

The official opening of the Management school, i.e. ‘Esprit School of Business’, a flagship project is an essential component of the Esprit group, The implementation of a train-the trainer structure which bolsters the school’s adoption of the ever-popular active learning pedagogy and expand it for all levels and specializations, Structuring research with the creation of a research and development and Innovation committee and setting up new research units, Phasing in of the ‘Fondation Esprit’ works to assist talented students and to help reduce the social divide among youngsters, Last but not least, the 2015-2016 academic year, led all the school’s stakeholders to come together and focus on the upcoming EURACE accreditation audit, for the sake of a renewal for the ICT department and filing an initial application for the Electromechanical and civil engineering departments, the conclusions of which will be reached in the summer of 2017.

Have a pleasant reading!

01

Chairman of the Board of Directors

-Esprit Co-founder Professor Naceur

Ammar, the strategic direction policy has

been defined for the next 5 years. How do you envision the

development of Esprit by the year 2022?

First, I should like to point out that this present policy note was draf ted jointly by the Chair of the Board of Directors and the Director-General. It shall be submit ted to the governance bodies, namely the Board for strategic Direction (BSD) and the Board of Directors (BD) for approval. That will lead to an action plan that will involve all internal and external stakeholders. Back to the policy note now, Esprit has just graduated its class number 11, and we are now well into the maturing phase. Now is the time to reflect on what we intend to achieve in the future. There are three interrelated missions of initial training, continuing education, and research-development-innovation in dif ferent engineering specialties that integrate the economic, digital, energy, environmental and societal challenges of development. So the pondering must include these three missions, even if our most immediate priority remains the initial education. Moreover, the objective is crystal-clear. Esprit-School of Engineering” must reinforce its position as a national leader (12% of the graduate engineers flow), a ranking that is internationally recognized within quality engineering education dubbed “operational”.

Beyond the final objectives, what are the main axes around which the school will have to work?

First, training must evolve in line with socio-economic expectations and integrate new business-oriented options (3 to 4 new ICT options and 1 to 2 new EM options). In particular, the Civil Engineering program must take into account aspects related to the current transitions, energy, environmental, digital, technological, etc. The diversification of educational pathways will thus give more options to the students, to stick to their professional project, on the one hand, and to reinforce their employability on the other hand. Secondly, we will also continue to progressively introduce active pedagogies and programmed or non-programmed activities (within the framework of clubs, national and international challenges). 80% of the lessons will be based on these pedagogies. Entrepreneurship and innovation will be fostered by a stronger interaction between training activities and the incubator. Finally, we wish to make our engagement with the corporate world the keystone of the development of the school of engineering. The school will promote a comprehensive partnership framework for all activities, including initial and continuing education and RDI. In this context, the company will of fer

internships, additional training modules provided by the company, alternating courses, integrated projects for students in the 4th year, projects for RDI teams, professional certification programs, Development plat forms, etc.

How does the new Esprit School of Business entity compare to the Group’s existing entities?

ESB is obviously part of the large Esprit family and should lead us to strengthen the group’s cross-entity synergies. Crossover courses within both the school of Engineering and the Business school need to be set up for the sake of enhancing the learners skills, for instance by assigning them real-life projects in mixed teams, so that they bet ter grasp the complexity of the problems they will have to subsequently face at the workplace. In addition, the school of engineers will also interact with Esprit-Education to promote engineering among high school students in order to help them pre-select academic pathways in higher education. Another focus of action would be put ting engineering students to test in supporting middle-school and or high-school students with learning challenges, as part of a voluntary and socially responsible approach.

Tunisia is opening up to the African continent, do you support that initiative?

In the course of this year, we have begun a more systematic ef fort to at tract more international students, especially from West African countries. At the same time, we consider that the opening and the international deployment of the school constitute an axis of development impossible to circumvent. The school must multiply the academic partnerships to promote instructor and student mobility alike. Agreements relating to joint courses, dual degrees, academic stays of one semester or one year. Graduation internships must be strengthened to further encourage outgoing mobility. To do so, we will benefit from the networks of which we are members, the CDIO-Initiative since 2013, the Grandes Ecoles Conference since 2014, and the UNESCO Chair recently created in 2016.

What remains now of the 2003 Esprit?

One thing has never changed since the beginning, something to which we, the founders, remain particularly fond of: the values of the school. The slogan “Learn our of the box ...” will always remind all the stakeholders that the student remains the key actor of his / her education and that he / she is positioned at the core of our learning system. Just like the let ters of Esprit, the values of the school are defined for all the stakeholders (administrators, managers, teachers, personnel, students, partners, etc.).

Esprit? What’s next?Since employability remains the primary concern of Esprit in post-graduation, (The main objective of Esprit in the preparation of the next generation of engineers is employability). In order to achieve that, the school provides numerous sets of tools enabling its graduates to get best condition in job hiring process and employment in no time. In addition to internship programs, project-based studies, The Project Bash or face-to-face meetings with companies, an educational unit has been put in place for senior students for to prepare their integration into the labor market. This unit carries out its mission in means of workshops, techniques of searching vacant positions and necessary preparations to meet job of fers requirements. Last but not least, the Post-Graduation Employment Survey, carried out from May to August 2016, enabled us to tracking most trending fields. The survey covered the classes of 2013, 2014, and 2015 in four specialties (majors, departments, fields).

Advocating trainer training

In 2015-2016, Esprit has reconnected with the practice of systematic teaching/instructional assessment, It was carried out at the end of each semester. Assessment was based on 1662 modules. which amounts to 88.6% of the overall modules taught to all levels. The relatively subdued / low response rate has allowed to correctly gauge about 23% of the modules.

The overall score assigned by learners to instructors is 3.24/5. It shows a fairly high level of satisfaction. However, critical remarks have been made regarding class time management, course material, and content that was deemed too consistent for the required number of hours of study. So many subjects to be dealt with in the course the upcoming train-the trainer sessions.

INSTRUCTIONAL ASSESSMENT 2015-2016

SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING

What do you mean by valuing trainer training?

Since its inception, Esprit has opted for quality education in line with the market needs. Training operational engineers, ready to face the professional world with high technical and managerial qualities requires the implementation of an innovative pedagogy. Since 2012, we have implemented an active pedagogy based on project-based learning. The student is now an actor in the learning process and the teacher plays the role of coach, tutor and facilitator. However, being the product of lecture-based learning, we are therefore very lit tle informed about the new learning methodologies. So as to bet ter adapt to this new educational format, we need to research and engage in trainings to perform our job ef fectively, which is none other than a natural vocation. Vocation actually grows in value when it is well thought through. That is why we must at tribute importance to the development, support and enhancement of the pedagogical skills of our teachers. It is obvious that all of this can only be done through organizing training sessions.

Could you tell us more about some of the completed activities within the ‘train the trainer’ structure?

First of f, Management has always been available and at tentive to trainers, guiding them and keeping company in any pedagogical system or framework they request. For instance, instructional practice analysis, guidance on technology integration into courses, the use of specific sof tware solutions, suggesting a number of MOOCs and ef fective trainings, partnering with institutions, set ting up dynamic and contextualized courses and so on. We should also keep an eye on instructional appraisals, set up exchange workshops, seminars. You should pay a special at tention on instructional quality, constantly listening to the educators needs, assisting them in solving issues on a personal, technical or pedagogical level. By the way, the 2015 Winter workshop week was organized in an active way, with trainers in small groups split into 10 workshops at tempted to sort out and disseminate the key challenges encountered during a given active learning-based lesson. This enabled us to have an improved overview of the problems and ef fective feedback on our modest / young instructional experience. Subsequent Managements- instructors meet-ups were held to further set up an action plan addressing the various challenges.

How about the upcoming actions?

I can state two major actions : the implementation of a department catering for trainers that will host this particular set of activities and nourish other tasks to support instructors in the development of their work-related skills and competences for faster career progress. And I saved the best for last, we have just been given the green light by the UNESCO to host a chair dedicated to project learning in the context of engineering education. For the upcoming year, we intend to host 3 workshops in partnership with the UNESCO Chair, in the form of a training-action for instructors using the PBL approach the framework of which is the Esprit education model as a whole and the integrated projects entrusted to students more specifically. It looks like a true laboratory for experimenting, validating and owning PBL-related concepts.

Admission results of entrance examinations to the French and Tunisian MP 2016

Like every year, the students of Esprit Prépa have excelled during this year’s competitive entrance examination to French “Grandes Ecoles” and national institutions. 90% were admitted to best institutions to pursue best education.

Entrance Examination Results:

Esprit Prépa international students by nationality:

1student was admitted to the French Ecole Polytechnique (X)

11 student were admitted to “Mines-Pont” and “Mines-Télécom” examinations

40 student were admitted to national examination

I first came in Tunisia in September 2015 af ter passing my baccalaureate in Science. I was among the best in my school and the Presidency of Côte d’Ivoire encouraged me to get a scholarship to study either in Morocco or Tunisia.

“I have always been fond of mathematics and I planned to enroll at IPEST (Preparatory institute for scientific and technical studies) after obtaining the Baccalaureate. I didn’t include French Prep schools in my plans as I was not ready yet to travel abroad and leave my family behind. Having immediately dismissed the idea of studying in a preparatory school for engineering that can only open doors to national entrance examination to Tunisian universities

Alternatively, the choice of Esprit prépa was on the table. The reason why I registered at this institution was the school’s hands-on approach with students and the outstanding results in both national and international entrance examinations. For instance, the success of Aymen Jemal who joined French Polytech X in 2014 played a decisive role in my choice, proving me that I can do the same. After passing the entrance exams to the French “Grandes Ecoles”, I was accepted in X (which I am considering), ENS of Cachan, Mines-ParisTech school, and Centrale Paris. I was even ranked third in the national examination results.Af ter the first year consisting of a 6-month internship and a core curriculum study period, I am thinking about moving to an applied school or studying mathematics in a few years. In short, in 10 years time, I intend to be an engineer or a researcher, and why not both.In conclusion, the success of post-baccalaureate studies does not only rely on GPA, as is revealed by the traditional orientation system. Future development can be achieved through the combination of 3 factors: ambition, sustained and regular work, and a good study environment. These are crucial for the emergence of talent. I would say, in all modesty, that I possess the first two and Esprit-Prépa has provided us with a supportive environment.

I chose Tunisia for Esprit-Prépa, given the excellent results in the previous years’ examinations. That was my main motivation. One of my objectives is to integrate a prestigious engineering school and then take up a position related to ICT and more precisely statistics and Big Data. Esprit-Prépa will allow me to achieve my objectives by givening me the opportunites to sit for the entrance exams to the Grandes Ecoles. Personally, I am targeting ENSAE, a French graduate school in the fields of statistics, economics, finance and actuarial science.

All eyes on Africa

The number of our engineering students abroad has considerably risen over the last three years, as shown in the following histogram. Generally, most of the students are in France owing to the mastering of the language, proximity, and similarities (shared) in education systems. Nonetheless, Esprit has recently partnered[E1] [E2] with more universities around the world that will provide

an array of broader destinations (United States, Egypt, Morocco, etc.). On the other hand, a small number of international students have enrolled in Esprit in the last two years. A targeted communication has been put in place to reach more perspective students around the world; the result is promising so far.

SCHOOL OF BUSINESSEsprit is thriving

The informat ion and communicat ion technologies have revamped product ion (manufacturing) and dist ribut ion methods (processes). Management is now in turn facing this major challenge: adapt or re-engage to be in line with digital t ransformat ion.

Which position does your school aspire to occupy within the Tunisian universities?MJ: It will be a distinctive management school standing out by its inclusion in this ominous trend, that is the cross-breeding of both managerial and digital skills. As for other fields, digital technology has invaded all areas of management, thus, the next generation of managers have to master its tools or will get behind. Besides, mastering all the fundamentals of management will be the paramount objective in our courses which also focuses on soft skills and general knowledge without which the skills acquired are soon obsolescent. Our country has impressed the world by its successful political transition. The next step now is to do the same for the economic transition and the key to this endeavor lies in the quality of human resources that we will know exactly how to prepare them for technologies and management of tomorrow.

What are the links between ESB and Esprit School of Engineering? We rely on a strong partnership with Esprit School of Engineering whose reputation is firmly established in digital technology- So far Esprit is the only Tunisian school recipient of the EUR-ACE accreditation (European Engineering Programs Accreditation Label); offering progressive instruction to students. This partnership is all the easier since both entities share the same philosophy and common values: meeting international quality standards, maximum openness to companies and their needs, international openness, proficiency in languages and communication tools, social inclusion, active pedagogy that puts the student at the core of the learning process and permanent instructors to oversee it, character development through community-based activity. 05Interview with Ines Masmoudi

Our institution of fers two kinds of ‘licenses’ or Bachelor’s degrees (which is equivalent to a three-year-bachelor degree); a fundamental license in management and another in Business applied to Computer Science, and, one master’s degree in digital management and information systems. Our clear-cut programs focus on active pedagogy and is conveyed to students through case studies and specific projects. Students will have to apply the knowledge acquired in a business-driven project during semester 2. The aim is to develop the student’s ability to understand and apply theoretical concepts to professional life. They will thus be operational as soon as they graduate. We have also chosen to place particular emphasis on language proficiency and personal development. We believe that a future manager must master languages and communication skills in addition to key competencies related to their specializations. The objective for each student is to reach the B1 level in both French and English (in freshmen year) at the end of the first year and level B2 at the end of the second. We of fer personal development workshops: CV elaboration, how to ace a job interview, for instance. General culture seminars are scheduled on a weekly basis with guest speakers from all walks of life on various subjects. Students get to work extensively on general culture spin-of f assignments.

Our society does not only need talented managers, but also - and more than ever - well-informed citizens, able to judge for themselves. In an increasingly globalized world, the knowledge to be taught at ESB cannot be compartmentalized or purely specialized.

The approach of of fering students a utilitarian curriculum where dif ferent subjects (finance, law, marketing, accounting, statistics, computer science, languages ...) would be juxtaposed is outdated. The aim of this seminar is to enable students to bet ter understand the environment in which they operate and develop an all-round vision, in line with their future responsibilities as managers. The approach is resolutely eclectic, as evidenced by the choice of our guests: from Raja Farhat, a national figure in theatre, to Radhi Meddeb, a Polytechnique graduate and eminent economist, Nadia Khiari, editorial cartoonist, or Badreddine Ouali, business manager.

Why a general culture seminar?

This seminar was conceived with the principle in mind that “a well-educated mind” is more important than a head filled with facts, with the desire to provide it with a civic dimension aimed at sharpening the student’s critical thinking.

ESPRIT EDUCATION

Esprit Education was founded in 2014 regrouping the three major pre-college education: Esprit pre-school, Al-Kindi (elementary), and Al-Fikr (high school). The objective of Esprit Education is to create the next generation of global citizens firmly rooted in the 21st century with extensive scientific knowledge and broad general culture (knowledge, expertise, and sof t skills).

Courses are conducted in both Arabic and French in respect to the bicultural heritage Tunisia has always advocated as well as mastering English, the ultimate international language. Teaching primary and middle school students is based on active pedagogy, triggering their curiosity which entails the development of reasoning, critical thinking through interdisciplinary activities and projects. Not to mention extracurricular programs such as sport, cultural activities (music, painting, performing arts) and participating in challenges like inter-school debate contests.

574 students have enrolled in Al-Fikr and are assigned in fairly small-sized classes.

In order to meet the requirements set by this education hub, Esprit Group decided to hire fresh graduates (with a bachelor or a Master degree, in any discipline) looking for teaching positions. Esprit ensures quality trainings for these new teachers so they can master the necessary trade for education by going through these 3 stages:

1. Secure quality communication skills of interns

2. Encourage active learning that is the practical scope rather than the theoretical dimension

44 interns benefited from this training; 37 were hired on the spot by Esprit Education.

Esprit Education is also a team of young and dedicated teachers who were familiarized in the “Training of Trainers Center” with an active and innovative pedagogy, which is individually focused approach and adapted to each learner, to bet ter guide pupils in each step. As for higher education, Esprit Educations fosters the extracurricular activities such as associations, clubs: Scratch Tour, Inter-classes and inter-school debate competitions (which they finished 3rd in the lat ter out of 57 schools), Olympiads, Mediterranean mathematics championships; some of our pupils got the bronze medal and a certified training in computer fundamentals.

3. Develop the ability to deal with recurrent and unfamiliar situations through relevant know-how

07PEOPLE OF ESPRIT

Professor TechnologistMy career first began in 1995 in Montreal, Canada, at Nortel Networks (Optical Networks Division) as a hardware engineer and later I became technical consultant. Af ter that, I moved to Dubai in 2002 where I held various academic positions, including Dean of the IT College at the University of Dubai. Af ter 32 years living abroad, I decided to return to my home country in 2016 where I joined Esprit. I was impressed by the stance the school has taken on education that exactly matches my expectations. Topping that, Esprit provided me with means to highlight my skills by empowering me with responsibilities and promising professional evolution.

Head of Student Af fairs and Examination PlanningAf ter graduating in computer engineering, I started my professional career in the public service as an IT manager and then to the private sector for 26 years. I actually joined Esprit in 2008, as an instructor in database and was in charge of the education department where I was assigned the mission of streamlining school management and administration. I’m persuaded that doing your job properly is fundamental and my 34-year career has always been based on this motto. By 1 January 2017, I’ll pass the torch af ter 8 years at Esprit.

Assistant technologistElectromechanical DepartmentMy life at Esprit first started in 2008 as a hyperactive yet an engaged student; I was host to the new-defunct Esprit TV channel, president of the football team, class representative, and an aspiring event planner. After graduation, I immediately applied for a teaching position in the Electro-mechanics department and set my sight on becoming a provider of new opportunities to students: planning frequent visits to companies. Shortly after, becoming president of electromechanical clubs was particularly a unique experience as my students and myself stood out in international competitions in robotics in different parts of the world, namely Russia, Qatar, Switzerland, and France.

Instructor-Researcher in Marketing GED UnitAf ter an extensive teaching and research experience in France and Tunisia, I joined Esprit in 2013 to teach Marketing and was part of a RDI Team in the COGED department (Communication, Management, Economics and Law Department). Working at Esprit is also being able to apply my teaching skills in an institution standing out by its quality education where innovation and learning go hand in hand. I also had the opportunity to participate with my team, as a an educational consultant, at the “Enactus World Cup” held in Toronto, Canada, in September 2016. This experience was a capstone on both personal and professional levels.

Head of Hygiene and Sanitat ion Department I joined Esprit from the very beginning, in 2003, as an assistant in the hygiene and sanitation department which I‘ve become in charge of later on. Our team is now made of 22 staf f members united and ever true to our main concern of guaranteeing a viable environment for everyone. I do spend more time at work than at my house, yet, I have never complained and the bond I developed with my surrogate family is unbreakable.

Instructor in Applied MathematicsHead of the Mathematics UnitI’ve been teaching applied mathematics in Esprit since 2010 and being part of this school enabled me, as well as my team members, to develop my teaching skills through the active approach thanks to trainings provided by teaching experts. Esprit work environment based on team spirit has given me the opportunity to start research around Mathematics and the development of corporate social networks. One of my career highlights started in 2015 with a collaboration with the Ministry of transportation and the incubators “Carthage Business Angel” and “Wiki-Startup”: set ting up the first entrepreneurship contest related to the mobility of the future, “MOVILITY”. Our partnership in the organization of this contest is still ongoing.
