HARMONY AWARD WINNERS—WEEK 2 TERM 2

Congratulations to the following students:

Year 6 Room 15 : Maison Year 4 Room 12 : Crystal

We would like to thank Whiteman Park for donating

the tramway family passes for our winners this week.

The school office is a very busy place, especially around drop-off and pick-up

times. We thank everyone for their patience during these times. We under-

stand that on occasion, there are unforeseen circumstances, and a parent

may need to get a message to their child during the school day. We will

endeavour to do so, but there may be times when this may not be possible.

We strongly recommend that all parents give their child this important

message - If a parent does not arrive to pick them up from school, make your

way to the office and we will help.

MESSAGES FOR YOUR CHILD

SCHOOL PHOTOGRAPHS—SPECIAL PHOTOS

Following our recent school photography by Kapture, you can now view and order any special photos taken this year. When visiting https://www.kapture.com.au/event.asp you will need to enter our school code under the Sports & Event tab to access the gallery – Code: 7F73MZ

Please note they have uploaded a copy of the graduation group photo which parents are able to view and purchase. On occasion, parents like to purchase a copy (separate to the complimentary graduation packages received by the school) for other family members or purposes. Please alert the School Office if you wish for this to be removed from the gallery for any reason.

Did someone say Harmony Award?

The Craigie Heights kids are rewarded with Harmony

Awards for displaying our expected behaviours—Be

Safe, Be Respectful, Be Responsible & Be an

Achiever. Students can post their Harmony Awards in

our special letter boxes and then go into the draw for

a fabulous prize at the assembly. But before posting

them, students record the number of Harmony

Awards they receive on their Harmony Award

Certificates. This week lots of students visited the

office to show off their milestones. A couple of kids

have earnt over 250 Harmony Awards this year!!

Craigie kids strive to achieve their personal best!

Over the last couple of weeks Mrs Graffin, Mrs Robinson and I have had

lots of visitors to the office to show off their amazing work and talents. We

have listened to Talk 4 Writing stories, seen beautifully presented printing,

heard kids skip counting and have been impressed with the pride our

students are showing in their work. The kids at Craigie are constantly

striving to achieve their personal best.

Learning is fun! With Mrs Moore!

The students in Mrs Moore’s Year 3 class have

been learning how to use a sewing machine, to

make their mums a recycle bag for Mother’s Day.

Mrs Moore’s family came to Craigie to help them

out. The Room 10 kids are building skills that will

stay with them for life. Thanks to Mrs Moore and

her family for making learning practical and

meaningful.

Time to be creative!

Recently, a group of Year 5/6 students from Rooms 13, 14 & 15

worked on a STEAM project whereby they had to design, make and

appraise a piece of formal wear out of newspaper. Most groups

created lovely ball gowns, however a couple of suits were made.

Students used their problem solving, cooperative and creative skills

to come up with some masterpieces. The session ended with a

fashion parade—catwalk style. The students enjoyed the challenge!

NAPLAN YEAR 3 AND 5 The National Assessment Program in Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) will be conducted in Weeks 3 and 4, from Tuesday 14th May to Friday 24 May 2019. The assessments provide parents and schools with an understanding of how individual students are performing at the time of the test. NAPLAN is just one aspect of the assessment and reporting process. Students in Years 3 and 5 will participate in reading, writing, language conventions (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy. The Year 3 students will complete the writing on paper, but all other assessments are done online. It is important to reassure your child that NAPLAN is just one assessment, and to simply try their best. They have been well prepared for the online platform this year and need to see it as a normal school day. Please find below the schedule.

Some sessions are at the start of the day so we ask that students arrive on time to school. Please note that the above times may change if technical issues are experienced. If you have any queries, please speak to your child’s teacher or myself.

DISPLAYS

It is a pleasure to walk into a classroom and see students’ work on display. This is a great way for

students to share their work with each other, as well as with visitors to the room. Students can be proud

of their work when it has been put up for everyone to see.

Year 1s in Room 4 created some colourful underwater scenes. Besides making art, students learn how to respond to art, as well appreciate art. Mrs Page has used students’ photos to record their responses. Room 4 has also been learning about the Noongar 6 seasons. All students contributed to this beautiful display. There were lots of great conversations about the different seasons.

In Pre-primary Room 2, students have created Twiggle the Turtle. Twiggle tells us

how to Do Turtle when we might be having some uncomfortable feelings.

1. Stop and do turtle.

2. Breathe.

3. Say the problem and how you feel.

Mrs Pope has created a history table in her room for the Year 2s and 3s. There are some great items to look at and the students generally have a favourite. I love the typewriter as it is like one I had in my teens. The students made these wonderfully colourful bowls for Mothers’ Day. A tricky technique of melting coloured beads in the oven.

Mrs Moore has a great example on display in her classroom of how we go about innovating a model text in Talk 4 Writing. They have adapted The Rainbow Fish to become The Rainbow Cat. This is great way to learn good text structure.

Our new PATHS (Promoting Alternative Thinking Skills) display in the front office is delightful. Thank you to Mrs Page for her wonderful photography skills. The students share their thoughts on different feelings, and what to do when you have uncomfortable feelings. Remember “All feelings are OK, but not all behaviours are”. CHAPLAIN’S CHAMPION

Jacob is a good-natured and friendly student. He is a role model of the four expected behaviours in the classroom. Jacob is kind and helpful to others. His responsible attitude means that he can be trusted to do jobs in the classroom and school.

Jacob remembers to return his library books and complete his home-work. He is consistently one of the first students to follow the signal to stop and listen, and always listens respectfully to instructions. Jacob always puts his best effort into the work that he does and achieves great results. It is a pleasure to have Jacob in our school!

Team Colours Day for Jonathan

For several years now our school has sponsored children from other countries. We are so happy to be

supporting Jonathan from the Philippines.

In a recent letter Jonathan, wrote…

I’m currently a member of a children’s club and a child led learning group. I’ve also been learning at my local school, and am now in Grade 2. When I grow up I would like to be a policeman. I love to play basketball. The biggest change for me has been that I am no longer shy, and I have made many new friends. With your support I am living a healthier life and most times when I am unwell I receive medical assistance.

At Craigie Heights Primary School we hold one donation day in terms 1, 2 & 4 to support Jonathan. This term, for the donation of a gold coin, everyone in our school community is invited to wear their

Team Colours to school, on Thursday 30th May.

Please remember you still need to wear school shoes!

MORNING ARRIVAL

This term, Breakfast Club and Numero Club will be on a Tuesday morning from 8:00-8.25am (please note

a change in time) and Running Club on a Thursday morning from 7:45am. Students that are not involved

in these activities, and who arrive at school prior to 8:25am, need to go straight to the alcove of the Early

Childhood Block with their school bag. They are to sit quietly in this area until dismissed by the duty

person.

P&C NEWS:

A big thank you to our families for supporting the Mother’s Day Stall – we raised $1200 and hope that all the Mums, Grandmothers and special ladies enjoyed their gorgeous gifts and their special day.

Urgent help needed

We are calling all bakers to please donate some baked goods (store bought is fine too) for the BBQ Fundraiser we are hosting this Saturday 18th May (Election Day) at the school. It would be great if you can drop them to the stall from 8am on the day. Thanks in advance for your support. We’d also appreciate a few more volunteers to fill some empty spots – to help out with jobs like cooking the sausages, hotdog sales and cake sales. It’s always a lot of fun! Please check the roster on our Facebook page and let us know if you can spare an hour or two to help out. For those not on Facebook, please leave your name, number and rough time you’re available on a form at the office and we will be in touch.

Lapathon – save the date!

The Lapathon is booked for the last day of Term (Friday 5th July). Fundraising forms will be coming home soon.

School Banking - Tuesday Remember, Tuesday is School Banking day at Craigie Heights Primary School. Meet us outside Learning Block 1 from 8.15am with your weekly deposit and your Dollarmite passbook. Once students have made ten deposits they earn a School Banking reward item in recognition of their regular savings habits. School Banking is also a great fundraiser for our school, raising 5% on every deposit made through the school (to a maximum of $10 per individual deposit). How to Join? To join our School Banking program, please open a bank account for your child with Commonwealth Bank (either online, or in a branch). Our School Banking Co-ordinator will then assign your child with a student number and you are ready to go!

Parent parking is available in the car park in front of the Early Childhood Area. This area is not a ‘Kiss and Drop’ area. Provision has been made for two disabled parking bays in this car park. Please do not park in these bays as we have families requiring these spaces. Never use the staff car park. "Kiss and Drop" - If you wish to use the ‘Kiss and Drop’ area, there is a zone specifically for this purpose on Spinaway Street. Please do not park or leave your vehicle in this area. Additional parent parking is kindly offered at the Craigie Baptist Church car park beside the school, which is a short walk to the school. We are so lucky to have this additional parking so please respect everything on their site. The school oval will also be opened for parking for assemblies and school events. Parking on the verges around the school is extremely dangerous and puts our students at risk. Unfortunately a number of parents continue to park on our neighbours verges or drive-ways and this has been reported to the Joondalup Council for their action.
