How the Sheriffs from the Old Fron er Defended

Their Villages and Towns

We all grew upwith westerns and it gave us a vivid picture of law

enforcement. A gang of outlaws start to terrorize a town and

the frightened locals go to the sheriff to do something but he

is a coward or corrupt and can’t protect the town. The future is

bleak until a stranger appears to confront the gang and save the

day. It’s an exciting image but in reality it really didn’t happen

that way.

The people that settled in the West were not weak. They were

pioneers, new adapters and adventurous. These settlers left

their homes and traveled hundreds if not over a thousandmiles

to get to the new uncharted wilderness. They were determined

to make a new life for themselves and their families. Their long

journeys were hard and dangerous to get to their new homes.

Then there were the real lawmen, not like the movies or old

dime novels. There were both Marshall’s and Sheriff’s and they

workeddifferent roles. Thehistoryof theOldWestmostlyplayed

out in territories that hadn’t yet achieved statehood. Thatmeant

therewereno state governments to take care of lawenforcement.

The federal government sentU.S.marshals to the new territories

and they are the oldest law enforcement dating back to 1789 and

are the enforcement arm of the federal courts. Marshals were

ideal for the job because they had extensive powers; they could

hire local deputies or recruit a posse.

Virgil Earp was a U.S. Marshal who deputized his brother Wyatt

Earp and Doc Holliday. And while marshals had a lot of power

there were not thatmany of them, certainly not enough to cover

the huge growing area of the Wild West.

As villages and towns formed they took on their own responsi-

bility of law enforcement through local sheriffs. The office of

sheriff dates back to Saxon England but in the West the sheriff

took on amore distinctive form. Instead of an official appointed

by the king these new sheriffs were elected by the townspeople,

and given responsibility for law and order.

By electing sheriffs they were more trusted with the exception

that the elections could be rigged through corruption and bribed

voters. But in general most sheriffs where honorable men and

approached their job with honesty. The position came with a

lot of power and even more responsibility. The sheriff could

appoint deputies to help himwith his duties and it was common

tohavemany. Sheriffs often acted as tax collectors, and resolved

disputes over grazing rights or access to water.

They’re most famous as lawmen though. In the early days,

before the western territories achieved statehood, they liter-

ally had the power of life and death. A sheriff could arrest

wrongdoers, hold a trial and carry out the sentence. Sometimes

that meant locking a drunk up in the town jail for a few days;

sometimes it meant a hanging.

Crime in the West

What sort of crime did those sheriffs have to deal with, though?

Another stereotype we get frommovies is that the Old West was

a lawless, violent place. The truth is, in general it wasn’t. In

fact a typical Western town in the 1860s had a lot less crime and

disorder than it does today. That’s mostly down to the people

who lived there and the lives they led.

The new West attracted a wide range of people some were

visionaries that dreamed of building their paradise while others

were misfits who were running from the law or their families.

The West was ruthless and to survive more than a few weeks,

never mind to establish a successful farm or business, people

had to work together. Neighbors helped each other by trading

supplies andhelpingwithmanpower formajor building projects.

The merchants extended credit on the honor system and those

who abused it lost trust and became unwelcome in the town.

After the Civil War many of the pioneers were veterans who

brought their own camaraderie with them. This built a level of

trust which helped develop the Western towns. People knew

their neighbors, worked beside them and socialized with them.

Neighbors knew they could rely on each other while crime and

violence was rare.

When violence threatened the settlers, it usually came from

outside from gangs of outlaws and misfits that failed to fit

into society. These misfits would band together with other

likemindedmisfits and commit crimes against the innocent.

As big ranchers began to move in, conflicts began with small

farmers. Sometimes the big ranchers hired gangs of gunslingers

to enforce their will. Later the early railway barons began using

the same tactics.

When the federal government began its war against the Plains

Indians the previous good relations between settlers and the

tribes broke down, andwarriors began attacking farms and even

small towns.

Threats that faced those old-time lawmen were a lot like the

ones you’re likely to be dealing with in a SHTF scenario of today.

After all in the West society was still being built, home by home

and farm by farm. Themajority of the people were part of that

effort. They were used to taking care of themselves, growing

their own food, digging wells for water and resolving disputes

like adults.

Now imagine what it will be like when a developed society like

ours, full of people who think meat grows in shrink-wrapped

packages, collapses. Suddenly all those people have to fend for

themselves – and unlike the old pioneers they don’t have any

idea how to do it. It won’t be long before gangs, desperate for

basic necessities like food and water, are trying to take them

from anyone who looks like they’re managing to cope with the

situation. Existing law enforcement probably won’t be able to

help youmuch, either – what elements of it haven’t collapsed

will be completely overwhelmed, because chaos will spread far

and fast. If you want to protect yourself, your family and your

property in this scenario you’re going to have to do it yourself.

Many people in the USA now realize this and aim to be prepared,

but a lot of them are going the wrongway about it. This is where

the lessons of those old sheriffs come in.

To apply the same techniques as sheriffs in the West used, it

helps to look at how your own situation resembles theirs – and

how it’s different.

Equipment

Guns

The USA’s high rate of gun ownership is what makes it possible

to defend your community if society breaks down – but it also

increases the threat. You can bet that any group of marauders

will quickly pick up ever gun they can get their hands on, while

hungry refugees could also be carrying to defend themselves.

Having the right guns available is going to make a huge differ-

ence to your efforts to preserve a little patch of law.

Communica ons

It’s amazing how quickly we’ve become used to today’s hyper-

connectedworld. Most of us are never out of touch, wherever we

are – but only 25 years ago cell phones were a rarity and mobile

internet completelyunheardof. If youwanted to talk to someone

while you were out you found a pay phone and hoped they were

at home. In the Old West even that option didn’t exist. There

were no telephones, and the only quick way of communicating

over long distances was the embryonic telegraph system. The

first telegraph line went up in 1844, linking Washington, D.C.

with Baltimore. By 1856 there were around 40 US telegraph

companies, all based in the eastern states, but one of them –

which had recently renamed itself Western Union - had begun

buying upmany of the others. Western Union opened the first

transcontinental line in 1861 between New York and California,

and through the rest of the century the telegraphnetwork slowly

spread through the developingWest.

If society collapses you’ll suddenly find your communication

options at least as narrow as those of a 19th century pioneer.

Cell phones, landline exchanges and the internet will go down

quickly. The only modern communications that will work are

self-contained radios with their own power sources.

Organiza on

That brings us on to the next key point – how to organize.

That’s something a lot of “Preppers” seem to overlook. A big

part of being ready for when the SHTF is self-reliance, and

that doesn’t seem to sit well with committee meetings and

organizing communities to work together, but it needs to be

talked about. The people who set out to build the West were

also self-reliant; they had to be. But they also knew they

could accomplish more by working together than they could

as individuals.

One family can secure and defend their own property – but they

have no control over the surrounding area, and if a large enough

gang attacks them they’re eventually going to be overrun. A

loose community of hundreds of well-prepared, self-reliant

people could be taken down by a dozen bandits if they only have

to deal with them one or two or five at a time.

The Sheriff

Frontier towns couldn’t support a full-time police department;

everyonewas toobusy taming the surrounding landandbuilding

the town itself. Even the sheriff often wasn’t a full-time law

enforcer. Elected from among the people, he probably had a

farm or business of his own to run. There were upsides to this

though. Usually there wasn’t a divide between law enforcement

and civilians as there often is now. The townspeople knew that

the sheriff was one of their own. Most of them had voted for

him; the ones who hadn’t still knew who he was. There was an

essential link between sheriff and people; they’d chosen him to

protect them from lawbreakers, and that meant he could count

on their support when he needed it.

Sheriffs could call for support in many ways, but one of their

most valuable assets was simply the community itself. People

talked to their neighbors, in a web of information sharing that

covered the district. If someone had a problem with pilfering

round their farm, pretty soon everyone else would know about

it and be on the lookout. Word would soon get to the sheriff,

and he’d probably take a look round the area. Any opportunist

criminalswould quickly see that the communitywas on the alert,

and that had a big deterrent effect.

Deputy Sheriffs

Where deterrence didn’t work the sheriff had the power to

deputize people to help him. Larger townsmight have full-time

deputies, paid from the sheriff’s share of the taxes he collected.

In smaller settlements the sheriffmight have a pool of men he

knew he could rely on, but would only deputize themwhen they

were needed. That’s the situation you’ll be in if society collapses;

it’s not likely your local communitywill be big enough to support

full-time deputies.

A deputy sheriff, then and now, is a person appointed by the

ix

sheriff to carry out the sheriff’s duties. They have all the powers

of the sheriff himself, including investigating crimes, making

arrests and detaining suspects and criminals. Traditionally a

deputy is an employee of the sheriff, meaning they’re paid by

the sheriff and are under their command.

Bringing it up to date

So law and order in the Old West was mostly handled by sheriffs

and the help they could draw on from their communities, either

by appointing deputies or raising a posse. The big question is,

when our own society collapses, how can you use thosemethods

to keep yourself and the people around you safe? Is it even an

appropriate way to do things?

The answer to that question has to be yes. Sheriffs, unlike most

modern police forces, belong to the old tradition of policing by

consent. If the people didn’t like the job their sheriff was doing,

when his termwas up they could elect someone else. That was

an important check that kept most sheriffs honest. Now, with

the police increasingly politicized and remote from the people,

the element of consent is gone. That doesn’t matter much to a

powerful government that can enforce itswill through force, but

what about when that government loses control? If you want to

preserve safety in the aftermath the first thing you need to do

is get consent, because people aren’t going to accept any other

form of policing.

Getting yourself elected as sheriff probably isn’t realistic in a

SHTF scenario. People are likely to be too worried, and too

involved in looking after themselves, to feel like organizing

a town hallmeeting. Security is a priority, though, and it’s likely

to be needed sooner rather than later. That means someone

has to take on the responsibility. If nobody else is doing it

you’re going to have to step up, and your first task is going

to be building the consent you need. If you just start patrolling

the area with a gun the chances are you’ll be looked at with

suspicion – but with the right groundwork you’ll get a much

better response.

The first thing to do is speak to as many of your neighbors as

you can. If you can get them all together at once, great; if not,

talk to them individually. Explain that you’re worried about

lawlessness affecting you and them, and that you have some

ideas to help prevent any issues. Some will immediately see

the advantages. Others might need some convincing. Focus on

these points:

• Safety in numbers. A group of people working together can

achieve a lotmore than the samenumber all doing their own

thing – and that applies to security, too.

• Better awareness. Being organized means sharing infor-

mation, and that means everyone gets advanced warning of

any developing problems.

• Less time-consuming. If every home is 100% responsi-

ble for its own security everyone will spend a lot of time

checking for intruders and standing guard. That wastes

time people could use producing food and adapting to the

crisis.

• Safety for singles. Families can take turns checkingperime-

ters at night or standing guard whenmarauders are around.

Anyone living alone can’t do that. If there are older people

in your area they’re vulnerable, too– and local safety is only

as strong as the weakest link.

Showing the Flag

One of the most important things you can do is have a visible

presence round the clock. That’s one of the main reasons an

old-time sheriff would take on deputies. Many crimes are a lot

easier to commit at night, but if the area’s being patrolled that’s

a big deterrent. Obviously you can’t do it all yourself – you need

to sleep too, and you have other things to attend to. So find a

few volunteers who can see the benefits, and organize a shift

system. These will do the job of your deputies.

How you patrol will depend a lot on the area. If it’s suburban

– even urban – you might need to control access. A small

neighborhood can be held together even in a major collapse,

but not if refugees and raiders have easy access. Then again you

can’t mobilize enoughmanpower to cover every road. Consider

barricading most of them, at least well enough to keep vehicles

out, and having checkpoints to control the one or two you leave

open. A roving deputy can check the others on his rounds to

make sure nobody’s trying to reopen them.

In a rural community homes are likely to be a lot more scattered

and distances will be longer. Vehicle patrols are an option here,

as long as fuel lasts, but out of town you’re more likely to have

access to horses and people who can ride. They’re a natural

choice for the job.

Anyone who’s patrolling should be armed – with at least a

handgun, and ideally a shotgun or rifle – and at night they’ll

need a flashlight. If you have radios they should take one of

those too. What you don’t want is to have them fully kitted out

with military-style tactical gear. They’re just guys out looking

after their area and their neighbors, after all. They just have to

be visible enough to be noticed.

Especially during the day, your deputies should be well known

and approachable people. One of themost important things they

can do, apart from just being seen, is to talk to everyone they

meet. Thatmakes people feel involved in protecting themselves,

whichmeans they’ll bemore supportive of what you’re doing. It

also helps information flow around, and that’s vital. Remember

– most of the modern ways of passing on information will be

gone, and just like in the Old West it’s all going to be done by

face to face conversations. That’s another reason for avoiding

the military look – it’s just psychologically harder to talk to

someone who looks ready to fight a war, even if you know them.

In the actual military a lot of soldiers, those whose job it is to

talk to the locals, will walk aroundwith no helmet or armor, and

just a sidearm, even in a high threat environment. They take a

risk – and break the rules – because people are more likely to

tell them stuff.

So your deputies need to talk to people, help themoutwhere they

can and do everything in their power to build an atmosphere

where people talk about anyworries they have, anything they’ve

seen and anything else that can help preserve law and order.

Don’t just look outwards, either. If someone’s suffering from

stress – and people will be in an extreme SHTF scenario – you

can pick up advance warning of any issues that are developing.

If someone’s started drinking heavily, getting aggressive with

family or neighbors, possibly even thinking of suicide – you’ll

get to hear about it, and you can keep an eye on the situation

before it gets out of control.

You and your deputies have other things to do, too. You’ll know

the places in the area where bandits or refugees might hide up.

Check them regularly for signs that anyone’s been using them.

Also take a look at anything that could endanger the community.

If there’s a levee nearbymake sure it’s visited daily–more often

in heavy rain. Make sure nobody’s playing around with local

industries that use hazardous chemicals, and check for evidence

of tampering with the water supply.

One of the likeliest challenges you’ll face is groups of refugees

looking for food, shelter and security. You can’t take them

in; your own resources, no matter how well prepared you are,

will be stretched enough as the crisis goes on. Be firm, but

compassionate. You need to turn them away but don’t use force

unless they do it first. They’re Americans, after all, and they’re

not to blame for what’s happened. Some of themmight even

have been prepared for a social breakdown but had to move out

because their home was threatened or destroyed. Give them

what help you can without eating into your own reserves –

directions to safe areas, even somemedical supplies for anyone

who’s really sick or injured.

Eventually news is going to spread that your community has

managed to hold itself together, and nomatter how small it is

– even if it’s just you and one or two neighbors – someone’s

going to think of trying to take your resources away from you.

There’s a good chance that when they see you’re prepared and

vigilant they’ll back off and look for an easier target – but they

might not. That’s the worst case scenario, and you need to be

prepared for it.

Law enforcement in the Old West was all about the commu-

nity looking after itself. It was based on consent, on power

exercised by a sheriff chosen from among the people. That’s

the way the law should be maintained, and many of today’s

social problems trace back to the fact that it isn’t done that

way anymore.

After the SHTF it’s going to be different – surviving commu-

nities will have to return to the ways of the Western pioneers,

because there will be no other way to maintain law and order. If

those communities don’t adopt the Western way of keeping the

peace then they won’t last; however strong and self-reliant

they are they’ll inevitably be overwhelmed, one house at a

time, by those who emerge from the wreckage all around them.

The traditions of the sheriff, America’s iconic lawman, were

essential to building this country. They’ll be just as essential to

rebuilding it after a collapse.

Being Prepared

Emergency preparation is very important and this includes

being prepared for disasters. While no one likes to think that

something bad will happen, the truth is that sometimes it does

and you and your family will be much better off if you are

prepared for this before it occurs.

So how do you go about being prepared for disasters? Here are

some ideas:

• Be aware of potential disasters that can occur in your area

• Prepare your home for natural disasters and other problems

• Have an emergency escape plan such as fire exits and other

plants

• Practice fire drills and family emergency escape plans

• Plan for where you will go in the event that you need to

evacuate your area

If the event of a disaster, does your family know what to do?

Do you have a plan for if you get separated? Where will you go?

Do your children know who to call if something happens to the

adults? These are all scary things to think about happening but

important things to prepare for. As is often said, it’smuchbetter

to be prepared and never have to do it than to have a disaster

occur and not be ready.

Have an Emergency First Aid Kit

Every family should have at least one emergency first aid kit.

If you have a large family, a large house or multiple family

members, it may also benefit you to have more than one first

aid kit.

Youmay also want to take the time to learn basic first aid and

CPR. Classes are held in most local areas and you never know

when the situation will arise where you need to know this.

Your first aid kit should include:

• Medical-grade vinyl gloves

• Poison ivy relief cream

• Burn relief cream

• Sunscreen, SPF of 30 or greater

• Antibiotic ointment, Polysporin® or similar

• Sting relief lotion or ointment, calamine or similar

• Box of sterile gauze pads, either 3” x 3” or 4” x 4”

• Abdominal (ABD) or combine sterile pad, 5” x 9”

• Rolled gauze of 2 sizes, 2” x 4 yards and 4” x 4 yards

• Bandages of assorted types: finger, knuckle, plastic, Telfa®,

and general adhesive

• Sterile oval eye pad

BEING PREPARED

• Small sharp scissors

• Tweezers with pointed tip

• Thermometers, oral and rectal (for babies)

• Bandage, 3” x 6”

• Instant ice pack

• Roll of adhesive tape, 1” wide, may use plastic type if

preferred

• Triangular bandages, 2

• Package of safety pins, assorted sizes

• Absorbent cotton balls, 1 box

• Diarrhea remedy, Pepto-Bismol or Kaopectate or similar

• Popsicle (craft) sticks or finger splints

• Antibacterial soap, liquid or bar

• Medicine dropper

• Water purification tablets

• Small bottle of bleach

• Sharp knife or multipurpose knife/tool

• Bottles of aspirin, ibuprofen, and acetaminophen

• Splint materials: thin boards 2-3’ long

• Cough syrup and throat lozenges

• Large plastic trash bag and several smaller, zip-closure bags

Have Insurance whenever Possible

Do you have the proper insurance? While it’s difficult for some

people to pay for expensive insurance to possibly never have

to use it, you should also remember the expenses that could be

involved if you are not properly insured.

There are many different types of insurance such as:

• Medical/health

• Life and death

• Automobile

• Home or renter’s

• Mortgage

• Andmore

Insurance will help protect your family financially should a

disaster of some type occur. But it’s not enough just to have

insurance. You also need to be sure your coverage is thorough,

your premiums are paid on time and your policy remains up

to date and that beneficiaries and other important members

of the family know about your insurance policies. You should

also carry copies of the insurance policies in a safe place in case

something happens to the originals, such as a house fire.

Being prepared for disasters is one of themost important things

you can ever do for yourself and your family. Will you be

prepared if something unexpected happens to you?

What is the Urgency?

America in her long history has seen trials and tribulations that

have more than once, taken her to her knees.

But, NOTHING comes close to what we are seeing today except

the American Civil War.

I first heard of “Preppers” in 2007. There was a movement

that believed if Barack Obama was elected, America would turn

to chaos. He was elected and though the Peaceful Tea Party

Movement began, there was relative peace and little impact as

with the “Great Recession” not much happened.

The Obama’s served their 2 terms as President and the Liberal

Left was EXCITED for Madame President Hillary Clinton to take

her due place as the first Female President of the United States.

TheWORLD knows, that DIDN’T happen! Instead, Mr. Donald

Trump, theMOST UNLIKELY candidate EVER to occupy the Oval

Office, won. Yes, he WON BIG! Patriot and Constitution Loving

Americans came out en-masse to vote, and President Trump

took the Helm of this country while the ENTIRE Democrat

Establishment exploded!

In total disbelief and meltdown, the Democrats, Socialists,

Liberals, Antifa, the list goes on, began a campaign, several

campaigns to discredit and DESTROY this President AND this

Country! They conspired, lied, forged, falsified, created, par-

roted lies, hearsay and speculation all in an effort to have the

President removed.

Integrity went out the window and the Compliant and Complicit

Main Stream Media, along with almost every Social Media

platform, joined the parade. BUT THEY LOST. They are still

losing. Following Saul Alinsky’s “Rules for Radicals” they’ll

do ANYTHING to remove our President from office and/or keep

him fromwinning another term. They know very well, despite

all of the support in Media, Hollywood, Global Influences, they

probably will lose again. Personally, I’m sure of it!

But look what is happening now! In the late 60’s and early 70’s,

surrounding the assassination of JFK, Dr. Martin Luther King

Jr., Bobby Kennedy and the civil unrest of those times. Today,

there is a HUGE difference. ALL of the Media (polls show 96%+)

and ALL Liberal elected officials, support the unrest happening

in this country and around the world.

Antifa, the BLM, the NFAC and more, have found friends and

support fromDemocratMayors, Governors and Legislators. The

Police have been abandoned and told to “Stand Down”. Now

EVERY DAY people are being beaten, killed and marginalized.

WHAT IS THE URGENCY?

The Gangs of Thugs operate with impunity, no arrests, no

Justice, just THUGS able to burn, destroy, scare, intimidate

everyone and anyone they choose.

I hate to admit, but it isn’t going to end soon andWHEN Trump

is elected AGAIN, it will get worse! I Personally believe we are

looking at the Biblical Prophesy of Armageddon!

I am advising everyone I know and care about, prepare to flee

the big cities within 18months, and for as long as 10-15 years.

The world we wake up in EVERY day is RAPIDLY changing. A

day of reckoning is coming and if you are Not Prepared, you can

expect to become a VICTIM of the coming Crisis.

Add to this The Global Pandemic, Covid 19, has turned the world

on its ear! The New

Normal is anything BUT normal.

• We see Global Battles over Climate.

• International Tensions, the Race for Space.

• Racial tensions, Black Lives Matter, Hatred for the Police

If you’ve ever watched Naked & Afraid, a Reality show where

they take 2 contestants and drop them off in the middle of no

where with only a couple of survival items. Trust me, the fact

they are naked is not sexy but adds to themisery. The two items

most often taken (they are limited to 2 items, one per person),

are a Fire-starter, a pot or pan or a machete of some type.

Our ancestors didn’t have “Jobs” per-say, their primary respon-

sibilities were Shelter, Water, Food. They spendmost of their

day on these quests. If you find yourself and family in “Survival”

mode, EVERYONE will need to pitch in and most of your time

will be spent on the basics of living every day. It doesn’t have

to be without joy, camaraderie or quality of life, it will just be

different. In fact, MOST people who find themselves in this type

of situation, once they have mastered most of the tasks, report

months or years?

Shelter

I leave my house, where am I going to live?

So what to do if you’ve fled for a few days and things are not

getting better.

You, your wife and child have been holed up in a remote place

living in your car. You realize that the Chaos isn’t ending soon,

time to set up shelter. You know it is time for a little permanence.

You scout a location, far enough out that you can’t be seen by

the roads or trails. High ground, water in proximity.

There are several types of shelter from very primitive, thatched

walls and roof, grasses etc. for floor. You can build a simple

frame with cut limbs, vines to tie the limbs together. Once a

frame is built, you overlay limbs, branches etc. until you achieve

a formidable layer of protection from the outside elements.

The floor can be swept clean of debris and pounded to make a

firm floor or spread grass etc. to make a sufficient floor surface.

A simple door can be fashioned with the flap of a deer hide or a

simple covered frame.

Consider howNative Americans built TeePees or old western log

cabins from local materials.

You may also find a Cave or Wash area much like the Lipan

Apache Indians did for 1000’s of years. Just be certain you don’t

become a victim of potential flooding.

Once you determine a place you can hold up for a while, you can

begin to plan for longer term Shelter, Food, Water etc.

By preparing in advance your can establish a sustainable com-

fortable home that will not only protect you but allow certain

comforts.

Water

Water is Life Blood!

A person can typically survive without Food for 3-4 weeks. But

ONLY 3-4 DAYS without water.

Water is foundational to life and wellness. It is also critical you

have good, clean, potable water. There are concerns with water

and ensuring you don’t get sick from it.

Rivers, streams, lakes, and ponds are all potential sources of

water, as long as you keep in mind a few caveats. First, odds are

you aren’t the only person who knows about them. I don’t know

that you’ll need to go to battle with someone who is claiming

the entire water source as their own (unless it lies completely

on their own property, then you might indeed have a fight on

your hands), but if your plan is to avoid all human contact, these

wild sources of water might not be the way to go.

Second, you will need to make double-damn sure you do every-

thing feasible to filter and disinfect the water prior to it crossing

your lips. Waterborne pathogens such as giardia are not be to

be trifled with. I don’t care how pristine and clear the water

looks, odds are there are going to be nasties floating in it, way

too small to see and just waiting for some hapless goof to down

a quart so they can go to work.

Asnoted earlier,water is heavy. Transporting it byhandover any

sort of distance will get tiresome. But, if that’s the only source

of water available, you’ll have to figure out a way to deal with

it. One option that might be worth exploring is to use buckets

with tight-fitting lids, such as the ubiquitous five-gallon pails

found at any deli or bakery. Stack them two or three high on a

two-wheeled dolly and cart themback and forth. Awheelbarrow

mightwork aswell butwill require a bitmore strength for lifting.

If the path to and from the water source is too uneven for

wheeled transport, you might fashion together a shoulder pole,

also known as amilkmaid’s yoke. This device has been in use for

thousands of years and is still being used today. It is merely a

pole that is about four feet in length and rests across the back of

your shoulders, with a bucket suspended at each end. The pole

will need to be rather strong to support the weight of a couple

buckets of water. It isn’t the worst idea, either, to cut small

notches at each end of the pole to prevent the bucket handles

from sliding off. Use a towel or some other padding to make a

cushion at the back of your neck. Lift with your knees, not your

back.

Flowing water, such as streams and rivers, is generally going

to be safer than standing water. Moving water won’t usually be

full of algae and such. But, if a still pond is your only feasible

option, so be it. If you can, brush aside any thick algae growth

on the water’s surface before you fill your bucket. All you’re

really trying to do is limit the amount of material that will need

to be filtered out later.

How do you know and what can you do?

IF you find a creek at its headwaters, in other words where the

water percolates fromout of the ground. Typically, the earth has

filtered the water sufficiently to purify it and BEFORE animal

feces or contamination can occur. This water is usually suitable

to drink.

RainCapture- It is simple tomakea small framewithan inverted

Teepee capturing water into some sort of reservoir. Rain is

actually, through the process of evaporation and condensation,

distilled water. The only real concern is what airborne particles

or what it may run off of to contaminate it. But straight from

the sky is going to be suitable typically.

Believe it or not, depending on howmuch humidity/dewmay

be in an area, if you to a small vessel, a pot, jug etc. and make

plastic inverted tent so that water accumulates and drips into a

vessel, may not be a lot but even a few ounces of water helps.

Boiling water- this tried and truemethod of boiling water to kill

any contaminants or bacteria is desirable. If you don’t have a

pot or pan, you can actually use a rock that is in the shape of a

bowl, a plastic bottle, a hollowed out log or piece of wood.

If you have a plastic bottle with a lid, Here are the following

steps:

Step 1: You need fire, water and any plastic container with lid.

Step 2: Now take water and fill it in the bottle so that there is

no air present in the bottle.

Step 3: Now put on the fire and put the seal bottle on fire with

a distance of around 12

inch.

Step 4: Now let the heat warm up the bottle and be careful

while handling the bottle.

Step 5: After the water has heated up, bubbles will appear in

the bottle showing water

has boiled .Step 6: Now open the seal carefully.that’s it.

You can also heat rocks in the fire and place them into your

container, the water should “boil” when you insert them killing

most concerns.

Finally, if you are next to a creek or pond, a seep can be used to

filter creek and river water. About a foot away from the water’s

edge dig a hole capable of holding a few gallons of water. Give

it a fewminutes—water from the creek or river should slowly

fill the hole as it seeps through the soil. This water should be

much safer to drink than water straight from the creek or river,

whichmay be contaminated with bacteria.You can also do this

with lake and pond water as well; because lake and pond water

is more contaminated by bacteria and parasites typically than

a river or stream, you can build a second seep, next to the first

seep. This will create a second “natural” filtering layer of soil

that water will have to travel through.

Fire

Fire is so taken for granted yet SO beneficial!

Magnesium fire starters are cheap and can start 100’s of fires, a

MUSTHAVE in any go bag. One can be used to start thousands of

fires. They work wet, dry and are virtually destructive. You can

take a lighter or matches but the size, weight and functionality

make a Magnesium fire starter a MUST!

Fire is necessary for warmth, keeping predators and bugs

away, to purify your water, cooking of food. Every cave, wash

or dwelling of Native Americans and ancient Cavemen have

markings of fire.

It is desirable to keep a fire burning full time. Youmust be aware

of fuel for a fire so a huge blaze is not recommended but a small

continual fire in some sort of fire ringmade of rocks or a hole

dug can provide the perfect companion.

Other methods of starting fires from scratch involve rubbing

to sticks together. Though this takes some time and practice,

But here are the basics:

Be Prepared: No matter which method of fire-starting you

choose, it’s a good idea to have all your materials ready before

you get started. If you don’t take time to prepare before you get

started, you could spend vital time getting an ember burning

and still not be able to get a fire going.

To make sure you can keep a fire going once you have an ember,

you will want to have your tinder bundle made and placed near

the area where you will be starting your fire.

The type of tinder that youuse to start yourfire is very important

so that you can transform the ember produced into an actual

flame. A tinder bundle should consist of bits of dry, easily

ignitablematerials such as dandelion fluff, dead grass, withered

plants, or dried stalks.

You’ll also want to collect kindling and other firewood to feed

your fire once you get it started. Kindling and wood should be

seasoned and dry so it will catch fire easily.

That said, starting a fire with sticks is still a good basic survival

skill.

The Hand Drill Method, The Bow Drill Method, the Fire Plow

Method where 2 pieces of wood that are rubbed together and

the friction created spawns an ember which will catch your

tinder bundle on fire. All of these methods are arduous and

take practice to perfect but if you are not prepared, this will get

you fire.

Finally, Steel wool and a 9 volt battery can be used several times

until the battery is dead and or the steel wool is gone. You simply

get your tinder near the steel wool, apply the posts of the 9 volt

battery to the steel wool and it will “short out” and cause the

steel wool to glow and burn catching the tinder on fire.

Food

Prepare to broaden your palate if living off the grid!

Thoughaperson can live for 3-4weekswithout food, it is neither

fun nor desirable and over the first week or two, it is imperative

that sustainable sources of food are identified.

Obviously we are spoiled to a refrigerator/freezer, pantry filled

with boxed and canned goods. If ALL that went away tomorrow,

what do you do?

The items you can take in a Go Bag can sustain you for a while,

couple ofweeks, with enough rice andbeans, nuts, peanut butter

andhoney, amonthor twobutwhat about variety and long term?

This is where planning and creativity come in to play.

One would not BELIEVE howmany items around us are edible

and nutritious.

In the days of Cavemen who survived on the Paleo type of diet,

they primarily ate fruits, nuts, plants, vegetables until they’d

kill a Protein source. Once they did, they’d maximize it, even a

squirrel, rabbit etc.

• You can cook some of it, make jerky (salt is a MUST HAVE)

to preserve meat.

• There are MANY methods of catching some sort of food.

Snares, traps, spears etc.

• Fish are also a great source of protein.

• Birds nests with eggs in them etc.

Learning how to fish, clean fish, hunt, clean animals etc. are

skills to brush up on prior to needing the skills!

No luck with any of these? Bugs are loaded with protein! Yep,

as Americans, we are spoiled and the thought of eating bugs

sounds horrible but it really isn’t. This is a mental attitude that

if you’re hungry enough, not so gross!

Inmany parts of theworld, eating bugs is commonplace. Insects

are the most abundant protein source on the planet, andmany

of them boast dense concentrations of nutrients like omega 3’s

that we buy at fancy stores. If 2 billion people can invite insects

to the dinner table, it shouldn’t be too much of a stretch for you

to include edible bugs in your emergency survival diet.

Fire Pit or Oven

Once you have mastered building a fire, you’ll want to ensure

efficient use of the fire and fuel.

As I mentioned previously, Fire is essential for short and long

term survival. You are far better served having a perpetual fire

than starting anewevery day. You can create anOvenby stacking

rocks with mud between in a dome shape. With an outlet at the

top and a “door” in the front, you can keep a fire smoldering,

firing it up when you need it for warmth or to cook something.

There are many resources for a basic Brick or Rock oven.

Fire pits or holes also can serve to keep a fire alive and smol-

dering as well as cooking like an oven. For thousands of years,

people have dug holes, build a fire, added something to cook.

They then cover it and allow it to smolder for up to a couple of

days. This creates a lot of versatility in keeping and using a fire.

Having a continuous fire nearby your shelter keeps predators

away as well as bugs.

Safety & Protec on

Being able to sleep at night knowing you’re safe is very impor-

tant long term.

If you find yourself fleeing and in survival mode your safety

and security are going to be paramount. This can meanmany

different things to every different person.

Ideally you’d have some sort of firearm or two. Safety isn’t just

protection from other people but from predators. A wild pig is

actually a very aggressive creature. Deer when in Rut (heat) are

very dangerous. Snakes, many are poisonous but they can also

be eaten.

A rabid animal can charge you and the bite can be fatal.

If you don’t have a gun or bow and arrow, you can fashion a sling

shot or a sling. A spear, club or just rocks, sized to throw can

provide some security or defense and also be used as a weapon.

They take practice but I’ve seen people who practiced be VERY

effective with these tools.

Let’s suppose you have found a protected location, you’ve

established shelter, water and have food options available in

proximity. BUT you are a little concerned about someone

showing up undetected. Ideally, you’ll find like minded people

and you can form some sort of community where you join

together to the safety and security of each other.

How can you establish a warning system to alert you if someone

breaches your perimeter? In your go bag you should have a few

dental floss and/or a roll of fishing twine. Either of these, with a

small bell, can be used around the perimeter of your camp. You

would weave them in trees, bushes etc, about six inches off the

ground. You’d secure one end close to camp, thread a circular

perimeter and tie the bell to the other end. Could be a rock that

is pulled off a branch, anything that wouldmake noise if tripped.

This would serve as a perimeter alarm should your perimeter be

breached.

If you are trying to remain undiscoverable, though I recommend

a smallHamRadio and suppose youhave your phone, if you keep

them in a Faraday pouch, you can’t be tracked.

Youmaywant to get a small Laser that can servemany purposes,

even just being found or depending on how powerful they can

be used for safety or to start a fire. Again, they require batteries

so charging is important.

“Preppers” have been stocking up and setting plans for years just for

this moment.

Preppers, people who have been preparing for Armageddon and

Chaos for years, say youwant to be in a community of 50+people

for true safety and security. Like minded people who share

common beliefs, share common survival skill sets but also have

individual talents fromMedical toMechanical, making clothing,

hunting, farming etc.

Vigilance and alertness are key to your surroundings. I’ve spent

asmuch as 90 days in the wild with little more than a few basics.

Takes a little getting used to but is really a bit of an adventure

and creates an appreciation for leaning new skills.

Electricity

Ever since Nikola Tesla and Thomas Edison made electricity

accessible, it is one of the foundations of our lives.

Electricity has become an almost Must Have and there are ways

to harness electrical power in small amounts to power essential

items.

Solar: obviously this is probably the simplest solution. A small

solar cell can keep a battery charged for a LONG time. With this

you can power a radio, phone, LED light etc.

You can purchase a small 100Watt solar system for about $100.

With a battery, this will produce enough power for your small

electronic devices. Compact, light, necessary.

There are radio’s etc with a hand crank that can charge the

batteries or your phone.

These options do require some sort of battery to store the power.

Lead acid, Lithium etc. are options but the batteries do have a

life of 3 or so years.

There are even backpacks and coolers with solar cells built in

but for me, a stand alone, simple solar chargingmethod is the

most effective and affordable.

Communica on

Staying in touch with the world, there are tribes in the Amazon

that have never had contact with the outside world for genera-

tions. It can be argued they are better off.

As withmany other areas of this simple guide, technology offers

great options that weren’t available just a few years ago.

The days of Indian Smoke signals or bird calls are probably a bit

outdated BUT if SHTF, youWILLwant to be able to stay apprised

of what is happening that may affect you but also to keep in

touch with other survivors.

We as a people tend to enjoy communities and therefore I believe

it to be important to be able to stay in touch. At some point, IF

we find ourselves off grid, it will probably be for a few years and

not the rest of our lives.

It was interesting that when the Civil War ended, due to limited

communication, it wasmonths for the word to spread the the

war was over and for the fighting to stop.

In today’s world, we have much better communication and the

ability to monitor what is happening could be very important to

everyone.

I recommend a radio, Ham radio and possibly a phone, though

youmay give up service but they can still be used for 911 calls.

There are MANY great options. You are required to have a Ham

Radio License but if “SHTF”, no one will care!

Youwill want to be able to keep in touchwith the outsideworld. I

also expect there will be in place, within the next couple of years,

a global network mesh of low orbit satellites that will provide

internet service to every corner on the planet.

Even an AM/FM radio should pick up broadcasts that will keep

you aware of what is going on.

Further, much like the pony express, I expect there will be

couriers who pass through different areas sharing updates of

what is happening.

Transporta on

Getting around:

Let’s suppose you flee with a vehicle, fuel and maintenance will

be important over the long haul.

It may be beneficial to have a bicycle just to allow you to cover

more ground quickly if needed.

In theOldWest, horseswere usedbut this creates anothermouth

to feed etc. May be that bicycling or being afoot is the best

options.

If you are properly provisioned, you could have an electric

scooter and solar charger.

There will be limitations to this new lifestyle so making adjust-

ments will be ongoing.

Pets

In a disaster, you’ll want to take care of the pets as well as the

members of your family.

Keep a pet carrier ready. Hard-sided carriers and crates often

end up in attics or basements, gathering dust until the annual

veterinary visit. If you live in an area that is frequently at risk

for weather-related disasters, keep your carrier/crate out where

it can be easily accessed.

Prepare a disaster kit for your pet. Include:

• Food for five to seven days

• Jugs of water

• Nonbreakable bowl

• Kitty litter

• Anymedication your pet may be taking

• Recent photo (in case your pet gets loose and you need to

prepare “lost animal” posters or prove ownership in order

to retrieve her from a shelter)

PETS

• Harness or collar and leash

• Thick bath or beach towel for safe handling during stressful

times.

Give your pet an identification tag. Nationally, only about 2

percent of stray cats turned into shelters are ever reunited

with their guardians, though dogs fare somewhat better at

approximately 16 percent. At the very minimum, a dog should

always wear a license tag on his or her collar. While a few

communities license cats, most do not. Get your cat a break-

away collar and identification tag with your cell phone number

on it as soon as possible. If your pet wasn’t micro-chipped

at the time of adoption, ask your veterinarian to inject your

pet with this permanent identification tool and be sure to keep

the microchip registry updated whenever you change contact

information.

Organize a neighborhood pet watch. Trade keys with a neighbor

who works from home to ensure someone is available to care

for-or even evacuate-your pet in case of an emergency, when

you can’t be there. Provide them with a list of your pet’s

favorite hide-outs, as stressed animals are particularly adept

at disappearing. Let police and fire officials know you harbor

animals by placing a “Pets Inside” decal in the window of your

front door. Make sure to remove the decal when you move or

no longer have a pet, to ensure rescue workers do not endanger

themselves looking for pets that are no longer there.

These four easy steps will help you not only protect your animal

pals from being left behind when violent weather strikes, but

help you and your family reach safety with as much peace of

mind as possible. Only one last task awaits. Make sure your

community disaster plan makes provisions for animals as well

as people.

Wrapping Up

For decades people have been warning of Chaos and Armaged-

don, it hasn’t happened. BUT the events happening all over the

world today, sure seems we are closer than ever.

In the event the Biblical Prophesy occurs, we can expect 7-10

years of hell on earth where I andmany others believe life in the

Cities won’t really be an option unless you decide to become a

compliant sheep who bows to the Thugs that will be in charge.

Besides, learning the above skills and stretching your knowledge

could be beneficial in all aspects of your life and great lessons
