Wyoming Rushing Attack Making a Name for Itself in 2006: Through the first twogames of the 2006 season, the Wyoming rushing attack has led the way for the Cowboy Offense.

UW currently ranks No. 26 in the NCAA and No. 2 in the Mountain West Conference inrushing offense. The Pokes are averaging 194.5 yards per game.

The top individual rusher for the Cowboys is sophomore Wynel Seldon. Seldon is averaging77.5 yards per game to rank No. 3 in the MWC and No. 55 in the nation. His sophomorebackup, Devin Moore, ranks No. 11 in the MWC, averaging 49.5 yards per game.

Balance Also a Strength of 2006 Cowboy Offense: Offensive coaches are alwayslooking for a strong balance between running and passing, but rarely does an offense strike sucha successful balance as the Wyoming Cowboys have this season.

Wyoming is averaging 194.5 rushing yards per game and 192.0 passing yards per gamethrough the first two games for a total offense of 386.5 yards per game.

Wyoming rushed for 221 yards and passed for another 239 for a total of 460 yards of totaloffense in the 38-7 victory over Utah State.

At Virginia, Wyoming ran for 168 yards and passed for 145.Here are some other interesting facts on the balanced offensive attack featured by the

Wyoming Cowboys this season.•Wyoming has gained 48 first downs -- 23 rushing, 18 passing and seven by penalty.•Of Wyoming’s five touchdowns scored this season, four different Cowboys have scored the five TDS. The only Cowboy to score more than one touchdown this season has been wide receiver Hoost Marsh, who has scored two TDs.•Running backs Wynel Seldon and Devin Moore combined for 160 rushing yards -- 99 for Seldon and 61 for Moore.•Eight different Cowboys have gained yardage rushing this season and nine different individuals have caught at least one pass this year.

New Special Teams’ Performers Have Been Impressive to Start 2006: One areathat was a question mark for the Wyoming Cowboys entering the ‘06 campaign was its place-kickers and punters. UW didn’t return a starter, or a letterman, at either punter or place-kickerto begin this season.

But after two games, the Cowboys kicking area has shown a lot of promise.Junior punter Billy Vinnedge is currently averaging 44.4 yards per punt for the season. He

is currently tied for No. 3 in the MWC in punting. His 44.4-yard average would currently rankNo. 11 in the NCAA, but Vinnedge is one punt shy of meeting the NCAA minimum 3.6 punts pergame to qualify for the national rankings.

Freshman place-kicker Aric Goodman is ranked No. 3 in the MWC and is tied for No. 15 inthe nation in field goals, averaging 1.5 per game. Goodman is 3 of 5 (.600) for the season.

Last week in the true freshman’s first road game before a crowd of 60,429 Virginia fans, hehit both of his field goals, connecting from 23 and 39 yards. His only miscue last Saturday was amissed extra point in the first overtime.

The one returning veteran among the Cowboy specialists is punt returner Hoost Marsh.Marsh, now a junior, ranks No. 3 in the conference and No. 38 in the nation in punt returns. He is averaging 8.9 yards per return. Marsh was a First Team All-MWC return specialist as afreshman in 2004.

Half of Wyoming’s 2006 Opponents Played in Bowl Games Last Season:Looking at Wyoming’s schedule in 2006, a total of six of UW’s 12 opponents are coming off 2005seasons in which they played in bowl games.

New 3-4 Defensive Scheme Plays toCowboys’ Strength: One major changemade during 2006 spring drills was a switchfrom Wyoming’s traditional 4-3 defensivescheme to a 3-4 system.

One key factor in making the change wasto take advantage of Wyoming’s depth atlinebacker.

The Cowboys return all three startinglinebackers from last season in senior strong-side linebacker (SAM) Austin Hall, juniormiddle linebacker Luke Chase and sophomoreweak-side linebacker Ward Dobbs.

Hall will remain as an outside linebackeron the strong side again this season. Chasewill remain as one of two inside linebackers, and he will be joined by Dobbs, who will moveinside.

The other outside linebacker position(Buck) will be filled by junior Sean Claffey, who played the strong-side linebacker positionas a sophomore in ‘05. The “Buck” spot in2005 was a defensive end spot. While theCowboy defensive coaching staff will still usethe “Buck” terminology, the “Buck” will nowbe an outside linebacker.

#23 John Wendling, All-America CandidateStrong Safety, 6-1, 222, SeniorRock Springs, Wyo. (Rock Springs)

Wendling Earns Preseason All-MWC Honors: JohnWendling will enter his senior season as a leading All-Americacandidate in 2006. A three-year starter at safety for the Cowboys,he has added 13 pounds to his frame from a year ago, whilemaintaining his speed and explosiveness -- he ran a 4.38 40-yardtime during winter conditioning and posted a vertical jump of 40.9inches. During 2006 spring practice, Wendling trained at thestrong-safety position, in addition to his familiar free-safety spot.He could be utilized at either position his senior year. Prior to the2005 season, he was ranked by Phil Steele’s College FootballPreview as the No. 16 best free safety in the nation.

Defense Returns Six of Top 10 Tacklers for 2006 Season: One expected strengthfor the 2006 Wyoming Cowboys will be defense. Wyoming returns six of its Top 10 tacklers fromlast year’s defense that ranked No. 3 in the Mountain West Conference in both total defense andscoring defense.

Leading the way is senior safety John Wendling and sophomore inside linebacker WardDobbs, who both earned Honorable Mention All-Mountain West Conference honors last season. Both Wendling and Dobbs totalled 75 tackles on the season, which tied them for second place onthe Cowboy squad and 16th place in the MWC.

Other Notes of Interest: The Boise StateBroncos return a veteran team in 2006,including 20 of 24 starters from a year ago and49 of 57 lettermen from last year's team thattied for the Western Athletic Conference titlewith the Nevada Wolf Pack.

Boise State is one of nine current members ofthe Western Athletic Conference. Joining BoiseState as members of the WAC are: Fresno State,Hawaii, Idaho, Louisiana Tech, Nevada, NewMexico State, San Jose State, and Utah State.

While the Broncos return a large number of keyperformers from last season's 9-4 team, they areunder the direction of a new head coach in formeroffensive coordinator Chris Petersen. Petersencoordinated the Bronco offense for five seasonsfrom 2001-05 before being elevated to the head-coaching position last winter when former BSUhead man Dan Hawkins took the head-coachingposition at the University of Colorado.

Despite being in neighboring states, theUniversity of Wyoming and Boise State haveplayed only two previous times in history -- in 2002and '03. Part of the reason the two schools haveplayed only two times in history can be explainedby the fact that Boise State didn't move up toNCAA Division IA football until the 1996 season.Prior to that, the Broncos participated at the IAAlevel.

(The information below is from the perspectiveof Wyoming, thus, "W" means a Wyoming winand "H" stands for a game played in Laramie,Wyo.)Date Score Site9/14/02 L 13-35 H9/27/03 L 17-33 A

About Boise State: It’s been awhile since a team came to War Memorial Stadium withnumbers as impressive as the Broncos.

As expected, the veteran Broncos enter Saturday’s game with a 2-0 record, and haveoutscored their two opponents 97-14. They opened the season with a 45-0 rout of SacramentoState, then followed that up last Thursday with a nationally televised 42-14 win over the PAC10’s Oregon State. That translates into a 43.5-point-per-game average to 7.0 for the opponents.

No one doubted that Boise State would be a good football team. They are returning 20 of24 starters from last year’s team which was 9-4 and 7-1 in the Western Athletic Conference.

Victories are nothing new to the Broncos either. During its last 52 games, Boise State haswon 46. That’s a winning percentage of almost 90! They started that 52-game stretch with a 35-13 victory over Wyoming in September of 2002. In its six seasons in the Western AthleticConference, Boise State has enjoyed unparalleled success. The Broncos have won four champion-ships and finished second once. The Broncos are an impressive 36-3 in WAC games during thattime, with undefeated seasons in 2002, 2003 and 2004. Their three losses came at Rice andLouisiana Tech in 2001 and at Fresno State last year. Since 2002, their league record is the bestof any team in any league.

As usual, the Broncos are putting points on the board. They have topped the nation inscoring in three of the last six seasons, and finished second one other time. They are averagingover 42 points per game since the start of the 2000 season, which is the best in the country.During that time, they are the nation’s only team, averaging over 40 points per game.

Through two games, the Broncos are averaging 417 yards in total offense, to the opponent’s172.5. Boise State is aveaging 258.5 yards per game on the ground while the opponent hasmanaged just 54 yards on the ground.

When in the red-zone, the Broncos have been amazing. They have converted on 10 of 11red-zone chances, and 9 of those 10 conversions were touchdowns. They have outscored theopponent 56-14 in the first half. All 14 points by the opponent have come in the first quarter. The Broncos have not allowed a point yet in the second, third and fourth quarters.

Sophomore running back Ian Johnson has been the big story thus far. A California native, herushed for 663 yards and four touchdowns last season. In two games this season, he has alreadygained 329 yards, and scored seven touchdowns. He is averaging 164.5 yards per game, and 9.4yards per carry in two games! He scored five touchdowns last week against Oregon State. Incontrast, he carried 10 times and gained 72 yards against the Beavers last year.

The offense “goes” because of its outstanding quarterback, senior Jared Zabransky. Anative of Hermiston, OR, Zabransky has put together a tremendous career thus far. As a starterat Bolise, he is now 22-5, more wins than any other quarterback in the country. In fact, he wonhis first 11 games as a starter, the only quarterback in school history to do that. In the two winsso far, he has completed 19 of 33 passes for 286 yards and three touchdowns. He’s also scored atouchdown on the ground while gaining 53 yards on 18 carries. He ranks among the nation’s topfiv e in touchdowns responsible for.

His top targets thus far have been seniors Legedu Naane who has six catches for 41 yardsand two touchdowns, and Rabb Jerard, who has four receptions for 24 yards.

The top offensive lineman may be one of the most versatile in the country. Jeff Cavender, anative of Elko, Nevada, native is the Broncos’ starting right guard, his third different position inhis three seasons. As a freshman, he started all 12 Boise State games at right tackle. As asophomore, he moved to center where he started all 13 games. Now, because of an injury to histwin brother, Pete, and the emergence of Jadon Dailey at center, he is at right guard. To honorhis brother who is out for the season with an Achilles injury, he is wearing number 64, hisbrother’s number, rather than his own number of 54. He came out in the first game wearing it, atotal surprise to Pete.

On defense the Broncos have a veteran bunch led by their outstanding senior middlelinebacker Korey Hall. A First-Team All-WAC performer for the past two seasons, he has gottenoff to a great start. He leads the team in tackles with 16, including two tackles for losses and apass interception. The native of Glenns Ferry, Idaho, is in the WAC’s Top 10 for career tackles.

Senior strongside linebacker Colt Brooks is second on the team in tackles. He has posted 13tackles thus far including a tackle for a loss. He also has an interception and a fumble recovery.

The Broncos are very special on special teams. Their punt and kick returner, Quinton Jones isa preseason All-American. He also is an outstanding cornerback. He returned three kicks lastseason for touchdowns. He is third in the country in touchdowns among active punt returners.

Senior kick Kyle Stringer also is outstanding. he has punted nine times for 48 yards per punt.He has stuck five punts inside the 20 yard line. His long is 61 yards. He also kicks off for theBroncos.

Head Coach Chris Petersen: Peterson was promoted to the head coaching position onJanuary 1, 2006. The 41-year-old Petersen became the school’s ninth head coach in the 38-yearhistory of Bronco football. He had been the offensive coordinator under Dan Hawkins.

He has a bachelor’s degree in Psychology from U.C. Davis in 1988. He was an outstandingquarterback for his alma mater. He also holds a master’s from U.C. Davis.

He came to Boise State from the University of Oregon. He also was quarterback coach atPortland State.

Wyoming Football Team to Honor 115th Field ArtilleryBrigade with Helmet Decal for the Third Season: In honor ofthe 115th Field Artillery Brigade of the Wyoming Army National Guardnow serving in the Middle East, the University of Wyoming Football teamwill, for the third straight season, wear a helmet decal this season thatmirrors the shoulder-sleeve insignia worn by that unit. The helmet decal isthe silhouette of a bucking horse and rider in brown superimposed over agold sunburst with a brown background. The decal is displayed on theback left side of the Cowboys’ helmets just above an American flag decal.

The actual shoulder-sleeve insignia that is worn by the 115th is a black horse superimposedon a yellow sunburst with a scarlet background behind the sunburst. The shoulder-sleeve insigniais worn by the Headquarters and Headquarters Battery of the 115th Field Artillery Brigade, aswell as the following units: the 1st Battalion, 49th Field Artillery (Powder River Regiment); the 3rdBattalion, 49th Field Artillery (Powder River Regiment); and the 2nd Battalion, 300th FieldArtillery unit. Over the past two years, the Wyoming Cowboy Football team began to develop afriendship with the 115th Field Artillery Brigade due to head coach Joe Glenn’s frequent use ofthe phrase “Powder River, Let ‘er Buck!” The 115th includes multiple regiments that carry thename Powder River Regiment. The phrase “Powder River, Let ‘er Buck” became a World War IIbattle cry for select Army units that included soldiers from the state of Wyoming. The PowderRiver runs through north central Wyoming in Campbell, Johnson, Natrona and Sheridan Countiesand in southern Montana.

“We are proud to wear the insignia of the 115th Brigade on our helmets,” said UW headfootball coach Joe Glenn. “We want to recognize the men and women from Wyoming who areserving our country, and we want them to know that our thoughts and prayers are with them.”

Joe Glenn and Coaching Staff BringWyoming Back to NationalProminence in Only Three Seasons:Current Wyoming head coach Joe Glenn andhis coaching staff arrived in Laramie, Wyo., inJanuary of 2003 having captured an NCAADivision I-AA National Championship atMontana in 2001 and back-to-back NCAADivision II National Championships at NorthernColorado in 1996 and ‘97.

But the Wyoming program inherited byGlenn and his staff was at a low point, havingwon only two games the year prior to theirarrival. In fact, Wyoming had not been in thenational spotlight since 1996 when the Pokesended the season ranked No. 22 in the nationduring the last season of former Cowboy headcoach and current Purdue head coach Joe Tiller.

What Glenn and his staff haveaccomplished in just three short years is build aprogram that posted a 7-5 record in 2004, andrecorded Wyoming’s first bowl victory in 38years -- a 24-21 win over UCLA in the 2004Pioneer PureVision Las Vegas Bowl.

Glenn’s Belief in Coaching-StaffStability Proves Effective: Now in his22nd season as a college head coach,Wyoming’s Joe Glenn has enjoyed greatsuccess. One of the reasons for his long-running success is his philosophy of maintainingstability on his coaching staff.

The coaching staff he brought to Wyomingin January of 2003 has remained intact over thepast four seasons.

•Assistant Head Coach and Defensive Coordinator Mike Breske will be entering his 20th season as a member of Glenn’s staff.

•All nine of the assistant coaches on his Wyoming staff coached with him prior to coming to Laramie, and two of his assistants, running backs coach Bryan Applewhite and tight ends coach Harvey Patton, also played for him at the University of Northern Colorado.

Page 12

Joe Glenn will begin his fourth year as head football coach at the University of Wyoming in 2006. Duringthe first three years of the rebuilding process at Wyoming, Glenn and his coaching staff recorded a number ofaccomplishments that re-energized both his Wyoming players and Cowboy fans.

Among Wyoming’s accomplishments during the Glenn era are:•The Cowboys made their first bowl appearance in 11 seasons in the 2004 Pioneer PureVision Las Vegas Bowl, and won their first bowl game in 38 years, defeating UCLA, 24-21.•Wyoming recorded its first win in history over a Southeastern Conference (SEC) school in the 2004 season with a 37-32 win over Ole Miss.•The Cowboys also posted their first road win ever over an SEC team when, in 2005, the Pokes traveled to Oxford, Miss., and defeated the Ole Miss Rebels 24-14.•UW posted a 2-1 record versus BCS conference schools in 2004, defeating UCLA and Ole Miss, losing only at Texas A&M.•In the 2003 season, Glenn led Wyoming to wins over rivals Colorado State and Brigham Young in his first season on the sideline of War Memorial Stadium. That marked the first time since 1988 that UW had defeated its two archrivals in the same season. The impact of Glenn and his staff hasn’t only been recognized in the state of Wyoming, but has been

acknowledged by football experts across the Mountain West Conference and the nation. In the spring of2005, Wyoming received recognition in a number of college football writers preseason Top 25 polls. Whenthe 2004 season concluded with the victory over UCLA in the Las Vegas Bowl, Wyoming received votes in thefinal ESPN/USA Today Coaches’ Poll. That marked the first time since 1996 that Wyoming had ended a seasonreceiving votes in a national poll. The summer following that Las Vegas Bowl victory saw the Sporting Newsfeature Coach Glenn as a cover story, recognizing his turnaround of the Cowboy Football program. At the

conclusion of the 2003 season, MWC media members voted Wyoming as the “2004 Team on the Rise.” In the voting, conducted by the Las VegasReview-Journal, Wyoming received 53 percent of the votes. The next closest school received 20 percent.

Glenn’s proven record as a winner and his magnetic personality have made an immediate impact on the attitude surrounding Cowboy Football.Joe Glenn enters the 2006 season having won three national championships, six conference titles and posted 17 winning seasons in 21 years as

a head coach. It is a record that has the Cowboy faithful looking forward to a bright future for Wyoming Football. Glenn’s teams won the NCAADivision I-AA National Championship at Montana in 2001, and won two NCAA Division II National Championships at Northern Colorado in 1996 and1997. Over his career as a head coach at the collegiate level, he has won 68.6 percent of his games, posting a 173-79-1 record. Glenn will enter his22nd season as a head coach in 2006.

For three seasons from 2000-02, Glenn enjoyed enormous success at the University of Montana. He guided the Griz to a 39-6 (.867) record, including a 20-2 (.909) record in the Big Sky Conference. He won two outright Big Sky titles in 2000 and 2001, and tied for the conference title in2002. Montana played in the NCAA Division I-AA National Championship game in both 2000 and 2001, finishing as the national runner-up in 2000and winning the National Championship in 2001. The Grizzlies also advanced to the I-AA quarterfinals in 2002. His 86.7 winning percentage wasthe best in the history of the Big Sky Conference, a conference that produced such coaches as John L. Smith, Dennis Erickson, Sonny Lubick and JimSweeney. From the third game of the 2001 season through the 10th game of the 2002 season, Montana won 24 consecutive games, tying the I-AAall-time record. His 2001 squad set a school record with 15 wins en route to a 15-1 record and the national title.

Prior to leading Montana through three extremely successful seasons, Glenn spent 11 years as the head coach at the University of NorthernColorado, where he built the Bears into an NCAA Division II national power. UNC captured back-to-back Division II National Championships in1996 and ‘97, becoming only the fourth Division II school in history to repeat as national champions. The Bears appeared in the Division II Playoffsseven out of 11 seasons, and Glenn posted a 98-35 (.737) mark -- 70-28 (.714) in the North Central Conference. He concluded his UNC career byleading the Bears to North Central Conference titles in each of his final three seasons -- 1997, ‘98 and ‘99.

During his distinguished career, Glenn has been honored numerous times by his peers. His most recent honor came in 2002 when he wasselected Big Sky Conference Co-Coach of the Year by his fellow Big Sky coaches. It marked the third consecutive season that Glenn won or sharedthat honor. He was also named the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Division I-AA Region 5 Coach of the Year in 2002, marking thesecond consecutive season he earned that honor. In 2000, Glenn was presented the Eddie Robinson Award by The Sports Network as the Division I-AA National Coach of the Year. He also won AFCA Division II National Coach of the Year honors in both 1996 and ‘97. All total, he has beennamed National Coach of the Year three times, AFCA District Coach of the Year on five occasions and conference coach of the year five differentseasons. In the spring of 2000, The Denver Post named him one of Colorado’s “Greatest Coaches of the 1900’s.”

As head coach at Northern Colorado and Montana, Glenn led his teams to 14 consecutive winning seasons. One of his trademarks during his coaching career has been his ability to motivate and build relationships with players. He often tells his players

that he has only one rule for them to follow, “Be a Good Guy.” Being a good guy is a characteristic that the coach, himself, displays by example. He is also known for building strong relationships with those who coach with him. Two of the nine assistant coaches on his Wyoming coaching

staff played for him, and all nine coached with him prior to coming to Laramie.Highly respected in his field, Glenn was elected to the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Board of Trustees in January of 2005. He

is one of 16 college coaches across the nation currently serving on the AFCA Board of Trustees. The AFCA includes over 10,000 members from alllevels of the football coaching profession.

Glenn was named the 30th head football coach in Wyoming history on Dec. 12, 2002.Overall, Glenn is coaching in his 32nd season in college football as either a head or assistant coach.A 1971 graduate of the University of South Dakota, Glenn earned a bachelor of arts degree in health, physical education, recreation and

athletics. He played both quarterback and wide receiver for the Coyotes, and was selected a team captain as a senior.Glenn is 57 years old -- born March 7, 1949. He and his wife, Michele, are both natives of Lincoln, Neb. They have two adult children, a

daughter Erin and a son Casey, and one grandson, Henry, who was born Sept. 6, 2005, to Erin and her husband Jim. Casey and his wife, Shannon, are expecting their first baby in September of 2006.
