FITCH IS A CAMPBELL TROPHY SEMI-FINALISTSenior defensive end Alex Fitch was a semifinalist for the National Football Foundation’s William V. Campbell Trophy and a candidate for the 2009 NFF National Scholar-Athlete Award. A second team ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America selec-tion last year, Fitch carries a 3.97 cumulative grade point average while majoring in economics and mathematics. He was one of 154 college football nominees including 34 in Division III. Nominated by their schools, which are limited to one nominee each, semifinalists must be a senior or graduate student in their final year of eligibil-ity, have a GPA of at least 3.2 on a 4.0 scale, have outstanding football ability as a first team player or significant contributor, and have demonstrated strong leadership and citizenship. Renamed this fall in honor of Bill Campbell, the chairman of Intuit, former player and head coach at Columbia University and the 2004 recipi-ent of the NFF’s Gold Medal, the award comes with a 25-pound bronze trophy and a $25,000 post-graduate scholarship.

FITCH AND DICK EARN ACADEMIC ALL-DISTRICT HONORS Seniors Alex Fitch and Spud Dick were recently selected to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District V College Division Football Team by members of CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America). Fitch, a second team Academic All-America selection last year, earned first team all-district honors this year, while Dick was a second team choice.

Juniors Jonathan Lambert and Adam Hawkins were also nominated for the awards. To be eligible, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic stand-ings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director. Fitch, who was a second team ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America selection last year, advanced to the national ballot.

A RECORD-SETTING CAREERSenior quarterback Spud Dick, in his final season at DePauw, is the holder of several career records including passing yards (8,994), pass completions (748), pass attempts (1,136), touchdown passes (72), 200-yard passing games (23), 300-yard passing games (15), total offense yards (8,974) and total plays (1,258).

ANOTHER WINNING SEASON DePauw has extended its school record of consecutive .500 or better seasons to 14 straight years. The Tigers have now posted .500 or better seasons in 25 of the last 29 campaigns. Since the beginning of the 2004 season, the Tigers are 44-14 and over the last three seasons are 23-6.

TIGERS ON THE ROAD The Tigers finished the regular season with a 4-0 record on the road and have won six straight games away from Blackstock Stadium dating back to a 45-32 loss to Trinity on October 18, 2008. DePauw’s last road loss against a non-conference opponent was at Wabash on November 11, 2006, by a 23-20 score.

TWO RECEIVING RECORDS SET IN AUSTIN WIN In the win over Austin, Bryan Mulligan broke the DePauw career receptions record of 195 held by Jay True (1977-80). Mulligan’s seven catches against Wabash pushed his career total to 209. Also against Austin, Alex Koors broke the DePauw single-season receiving yardage record of 991 set by John Stephens in 2001 and now has 1,195. Koors also totaled 926 yards in 2008 which ranks fifth in school history.

CLOSING IN ON SCHOOL RECORDS Despite playing a nine-game regular season schedule, the Tigers are closing in on several team records. DePauw needs 21 pass completions to break the mark of 258 set in 2001, 157 passing yards to top the mark of 3,043 also set in 2001 and five touchdown passes to surpass the record of 30 in 1985. The Tigers’ 71.3 completion percentage is ahead of last year’s record of 67.4 percent. DePauw also needs 227 total offense yards to break the mark of 4,152 set in 2003 and 16 first downs to top the mark of 220 in 1987.
