Majors, Minors and Specialist Teaching Areas: how to work out what to enrol into when you commence your degree The major and minor/minor +2 sequences you complete (and in some cases the specific units you complete) will determine what Curriculum Pedagogy and Assessment units you can take, and what you are eligible to teach upon graduation. The subjects you can teach are known as your “Specialist Teaching Areas”. 2017 Unit Selection: Choosing your units Arts Majors and Minors Step 1: First choose your major or minor from the lists above. You can find out more about the major/minor areas in the 2017 Handbook.8 In first year you need to enrol in COMM170 and UNCC100 plus two Arts units, chosen from each of your major and minor in the first semester. You must also enrol in two Arts units from each of your major and minor sequence in second semester. One of those units in the major will be a 200 level unit. The tables on the following pages have information for each subject area and give advice for first year students on what to enrol in—be sure to read through the table before you begin to enrol in any units (subjects). You will find a ‘button’ on the next page which will link you through to the unit lists. Step 2: Your enrolment pattern will differ depending on whether you are commencing the degree in February or mid-year. Be sure to consult the correct course map for your cohort by matching the map to the date that you commenced your degree. Crosscheck your enrolment with your Course Map to ensure that you are enrolling into the appropriate unit, level and semester. There are different maps to manage different cohorts, such as midyear entry, so check carefully before enrolling.

Step 3: Once you have chosen your units you need to enrol via STUDENT CONNECT. If you are commencing in semester 1 you need to enrol for both semesters now. If you are enrolling at midyear, you only need to enrol for semester 2. If you are a full-time student, you should be enrolled in four units per semester. Information for Second Year Students: In semester 1: Enrol in the compulsory Education units: EDFD177 and EDFX173. Then you need to choose one 200 level unit in your major, if more than one is on offer you may select one. You will also need to choose one 200 level unit for your minor, if more than one is on offer you may select it. In semester 2: Enrol in the compulsory Education unit EDFX271, Then you need to enrol in two 200 level units in your major, and one in your minor.

The Core Curriculum

All undergraduate students are required to complete the University Core Curriculum as part of their course. Further information on its structure can be found on the Core Curriculum10 webpage. The Australian Catholic University Core Curriculum has been designed to focus on aspects of the University’s identity and mission. These units emphasise critical judgment, clear expression, ethical decision-making and concern for others, as individuals and as a community. The University Core Curriculum units included in this program are: UNCC100 Self and Community: Exploring the anatomy of modern society UNCC300 Justice and Change in a Global World

Working with Children and Police Checks

Those students participating in the Professional Experience Program (PEP) must obtain background checks as required by Federal and State/Territory laws. Please refer to your Faculty’s Work Integrated Learning11 webpage for requirements in your local State or Territory. The Professional Experience Office will provide further information about the PEP prior to students commencing the program. Supervised professional experience is at the heart of all our Initial Teacher Education courses and the Faculty will find appropriate placements to suit the needs of your course. Placements will usually be arranged for the scheduled placement period in the professional experience calendar, although this may not always be possible.

Frequently Asked Questions I need help with my enrolment/ I would like to check I have enrolled correctly, who can I speak to? Enrolment sessions are held in between December and February depending on campus arrangements. You must attend one to ensure you have completed your enrolment correctly. Times for these sessions are listed on the ACU website under Enrolment Information. Where do I find the units (subjects) for each major and minor? The section of the guide under “Unit Information’ has a link to a full list of Arts units offered in 2016. As you are in first year, most of your units should be introductory 100 level units. The Course Enrolment Guide is a ‘live’ document it may be updated throughout the year. Please pay close attention to your Course map when enrolling into your units for the year. What happens if I want to do a major that is not listed for the degree I am enrolled in? It’s important not to mix and match between the degrees. Some specialist teaching areas require a major, and this is only possible in the Humanities degree. (The other degrees have compulsory majors of their own). Is there a set major for the Humanities degree? No, students choose the major and minor in this degree from an approved list. What is the difference between Study of Religions and Theological Studies? Study of Religions is the nationally accredited specialist teaching area. It includes studies of different religions (including Christianity). The Study of Religions sequence also includes the three key units required by the Catholic Education Office. Theological Studies is specifically on Christian theology, it also includes the units recommended by the Catholic Education Office. It does not include units on other religions except as part of Biblical studies. I have finished first year and am now enrolling for second year. Is there anything I need to know before I enrol? In second year, you will enrol in Education as well as Arts units. Ensure that you enrol in EDFD177, EDFX173 and EDFX271 in the correct semester for your program map as well as five of your Arts units. Only include 300 level units if your program map directs you to do so. What is the difference between a minor and minor+2? How do I know which I will take? All students will take one 8 unit major. Most students will then also take a minor (4 units) or a minor+2 (6 units) in their second area. However, for students in BTeach/BA Mathematics and BTeach/BA Visual Arts who want to specialise in those areas by taking extra units in Maths or Visual Arts should follow as below. • Students in the Mathematics specialisation normally complete a Major, two Mathematics

Electives and must complete a Minor in another teaching subject. • Students in the Visual Arts specialisation normally complete a Major plus two Visual Arts

Electives and must complete a Minor in another teaching subject.

I have a disability and would like to know what support the university provides The university has a Disability Liaison Unit to assist students with ways the university can support study at ACU. This includes assistance with tutorial times, note takers, exam and test adjustments and many other forms of support. It’s a good idea to make contact with the disability advisors early (well before the start of the semester If possible) so that an Individual Education Plan can be established for you. How do I include a qualification to teach Religious Education (RE) in my program of study? Within the BTeach/BA degree, students may train for two specialist teaching areas. Students who wish to add a third, Religious Education to teach RE in Catholic and Non-Catholic Schools, may apply to undertake a Graduate Certificate in Religious Education (4 units) that may be obtained at the end of the degree (end of fourth year) as a separate study option.
