` COURSE DETAILS In the spring of 2020, this course meets Monday and Wednesday from 4:00 to 5:15 in Humanities 480. The course calendar and other course materials can be found on the university’s Canvas system. PURPOSE AND METHODS Students in this course will explore, define, and creatively use new media to investigate its potential as an environment for literate and literary expression. Digital environments considered include social media, video games, web sites, mobile apps, and augmented reality. The goals of this course are intended to enable you to do the following: 1. to conceive, design, and creative new media projects that consciously use the affordances of new media environments to pursue the goals of writing and literature 2. to discuss new media in historically and theoretically informed way. 3. to identify and describe the characteristics of new media environments and apply those ideas critically to analyses or particular new-media phenomena 4. to describe and distinguish how writing and new media differ culturally, discursively, formally, and ideologically 5. to write effectively about new media as cultural artifacts from an academic viewpoint 6. to use new media as a creative platform for literate and literary purposes See the last page for how these goals fulfill the outcomes of the writing program. 1 Students will investigate the literate possibilities of new media by reading, discussing, and writing about critical and historical works on new media (fulfills goals 1, 3-5 below) conceiving, writing, discussing and designing original new-media projects that achieve writerly effects and meaning fulfills goals 2, 6 below) preparing for quizzes and other activities that provide incentive to complete, absorb, and synthesize the readings (goals 1, 3-5 below) This course requires no prior knowledge of web design or specialized software. 3 PARTICIPATIONANDCLASSDISCUSSIONClassparticipationwillincludecomingtoclasswithallrequiredmaterials,beingpreparedtotalk,askingquestions,volunteeringrelevantcomments,callingattentiontoparticularquotationsfromthereadingsandbeingabletorelatethemtothecurrentdiscussion,listeningandrespondingtoyourclassmates—generally,helpingtomakeeveryclassmeetinganenvironmentofcuriosityandinquirythatenlargesoursenseofcommunityandcommonpurpose.

CREATIVEDIGITALPROJECTSProcessYouwillbegineachmajorprojectbywritingascriptonwhichyou’llreceivefeedbackinaworkshop.Youwillthenproducetheprojectinitsfinalformusingfreesoftware(Audacityforaudioediting,forexample)oronlineservices(GoogleSitesforpostingwebpages).Anychangesmadeinproductionshouldbereflectedinarevisedscript.Bytheproject’sfinalduedateandtime,thedigitalworkshouldbeuploadedtothewebandaworkingURLpostedtotheappropriateCanvasforum.Someassignmentsmayalsorequireaself-commentarywhichwillbesubmittedonaseparateduedate(usuallytheclassmeetingaftertheduedateforthedigitalproject).SuchcommentarieswillbeannouncedviatheCanvascoursecalendarandinclass.PhilosophyofCreativeAssignmentsTheassignmentsfortheseprojectsaskforyoutobecreative.Ratherthanmereself-expression,however,theword“creative”intheseassignmentsmeansfindingwaysofevokingmeaningandfeelinginanaudiencewhicharedistinctiveandfigurative.Attheheartofeachassignmentisatrope(thatis,acreativemove,turn,orstructure)thathasprovenproductiveinturningnew-mediatoolstoliteratepurposesindiverseways.Wewilllookatmultiplesexamplesofthesetropestohelpyouseeandchooseamongitsaesthetic,cultural,andintellectualpossibilities.WORKSHOPSThestructureandmethodofthiscourseisbasedontheworkshopmodelusedbycreativewritingprograms.Successofthecourseislargelydependentonthesuccessofthesesworkshops,whichisentirelydependentonyou,personally,andyourinformedpreparationandcreativeparticipation.

ScriptsInadditiontowritingandsubmittingyourownscript,youwillreceivescriptsofeachofyourclassmates’majorprojects.Youwillreadandthinkaboutthesescriptsindetailbeforeeachworkshop,prepareobservationsandsuggestions,andcometoclasspreparedtobecalledontocommentoneach.Ratherthansimplycorrectingorpassingjudgmentonyourclassmates’scripts,youwillbeexpectedtohelpeachauthortoenvisionandfullyrealizethecreativepotentialofeachproject,usingtheoriginalassignmentandideasintroducedinreadingsanddiscussionsasscaffolding.Yourroleinworkshopisnotthatofacriticorproofreader,butofacollaborator,coach,andcreativecolleague.

4 1.AllowedAbsencesYouareallowedasmallnumberofabsencesthatyoucanspendhoweveryouwish:4(inathree-day-a-weekclass)or3(inatwo-day-aweekclass).Allowedabsencesdonotexcuseyoufromtheworkdueorcompletedonthedaysyouareabsent,andsomein-classactivitiesandtimelyrequirementscannotbereplicatedormadeup.Saveyouroptional,"free"absencesforarainy(orsnowy)day.

4.TardinessandLeavingEarlyInadditiontoyourbudgetofallowedabsences,youalsohave3or4instances(dependingonthe3-or2-dayschedule)ofarrivinglateorleavingearlytouseifnecessary.Instancesinexcessofthisallowancewilldecreaseyouroverallgradeby2percentagepointseach.Ifyouneedtoleaveclassearly,evenifit'soneofyourallowedinstances,pleasearrangeitwithmeinadvance.

BYDEFAULT,THISCLASSISADEVICE-FREEZONEInourclassroom,wewillbeverydeliberateaboutwhenandhowweusetechnology.Bydefault,theclassroomwillbeadevice-freezoneforstudents.However,Iwillregularlyaskyoutobringalaptoptoworkoninclass.
