ESTIMADOS AMIGOS

ATENTAMENTE,

Nelson Arroyo, Presidente Nashira Baril, Vicepresidente

DEAR FRIENDSRyan C. M

In the late 1980s when Hyde Square Task Force was formed, our focus was on the streets that make up the Hyde/Jackson Square neighborhood. Ripped apart by disinvestment, our community was in crisis and needed a mobilization of residents, political attention, and resources.

As HSTF evolved, our capacity and focus expanded to include comprehensive youth programs and organizing campaigns. Our youth have influenced City Hall, the State House, and the Boston School Committee, pushing for changes in health, education, and youth-employment policies.

While our sphere of influence has continued to broaden, we remain committed to Hyde/Jackson Square. Over the past year, our work in the neighborhood has broadened as we’ve helped to maintain a vibrant community in Boston’s Latin Quarter. We’ve begun to realize our vision for the neighborhood, where Afro-Latin arts and culture are celebrated and preserved.

Hyde Square Task Force was recently named an ArtPlace America grantee, underpinning our plans to expand public programming, connect residents, and stimulate the local economy. We will Be Courageous and Take a Stand to activate the streets with arts, innovate strategies to enhance economic development, and create more opportunities for our emerging young artists to shine.

We appreciate your friendship and look forward to sharing this very exciting time in our organization’s history with you.

SINCERELY,

Nelson Arroyo, President and Nashira Baril, Vice-President

Our Paths to College and Careers Program (PCCP) has broadened and deepened. We follow youth into and through their college experience, ensuring they have the support they need to graduate. By teaching 21st century skills and starting teens on the road to college early, we make certain that they are prepared for successful careers. This year HSTF developed a partnership with the Boston Makers, which brings youth and community members together to problem solve and innovate in technology, building, arts, STEM, and other fields. At HSTF we think outside the box, and we invite youth to do the same. We’re daring to innovate.

Expanding our network of volunteers will provide youth with more hands-on career exploration opportunities, sparking their curiosity and opening their minds to new possibilities.

Increasing the number of students who receive intensive support applying to and graduating from college will ensure that even more youth stay on the path to a successful career.

Creating an active makerspace in Hyde Square Task Force’s Youth Community Development Center will offer youth and community members a place to collaborate, create, and solve problems together.

NEW RESIDENT ARTISTS.

YOUTH ENGAGED IN ARTS ADVOCACY.

PARTNERSHIPS WITH PREEMINENT ARTS INSTITUTIONS IN BOSTON.

Studies show that the arts as a teaching tool are unsurpassed as a way to engage at-risk youth, tap into their potential, and develop them into contributing members of their communities. Working with experts and partnering with organizations like ArtsEmerson, Company One Theatre, Berklee College of Music, and the Boston Ballet means that youth gain exposure to professionals and learn how arts can become part of their future. Performing, creating, and using their bodies, minds, and hearts to express themselves artistically transforms shy, unengaged teenagers into outgoing, confident young adults. By advocating for more arts across the city, youth transform their own spaces, communities, and schools. We invite youth to use the arts to unleash their potential. We’re daring to create.

CREATEDARE TO

The youth of Hyde Square Task Force embody how the power of imagination can be a transformative force for good. They have a daring willingness to embrace and share their creativity with the city of Boston. We are honored to be a community partner organization with HSTF.

FOCUS on arts

After only a month at Hyde Square Task Force, I was playing a variety of instruments I never thought I could play. Hyde Square Task Force brings youth off the dark streets and into the light of music.

HSTF teens will create and perform more original pieces than ever before in many different genres.

We will increase the visibility and appreciation of Afro-Latin arts and culture through ongoing events and programming. Youth will learn dance, theater, and music based in Afro-Latin traditions and then bring it to the community.

Youth will be on the front lines of arts advocacy and creating Boston’s first comprehensive cultural plan, working alongside MASSCreative and as members of the BostonCreates Youth Committee.

We’ll grow our network of Afro-Latin artists, teachers, and performers, and expand our partnerships to expose youth to new high-caliber arts and artists.

BOSTON’S LATIN QUARTER COMES ALIVE.

OUTDOOR ARTS AND CULTURAL EVENTS BRING PEOPLE TOGETHER.

CITY DEVELOPS FIRST COMPREHENSIVE CULTURAL PLAN IN 50 YEARS.

Hyde Square Task Force is hard at work, engaging stakeholders at the neighborhood, city, and state levels to elevate the profile of Boston’s Latin Quarter. Spanning a square mile in Hyde/Jackson Square in Jamaica Plain, we are at the center of this vibrant and energetic part of our city. This summer we activated the long-vacant Blessed Sacrament Church building’s plaza with the ¡Viva el Latin Quarter! event series, which brought more than 1,500 residents together and created a true community space. By hosting children’s activities, exercise classes, concerts, movie nights, dinners, and workshops, a space that was previously vacant became a vibrant gathering place for residents three nights a week. We have no doubt that the future of Boston’s Latin Quarter is bright. We’re daring to activate.

Hyde Square Task Force youth ignite joy in the community by inviting others to join in their music-making during ArtWeek.

LOOKING FORWARD

Businesses in Hyde/Jackson Square benefit from Hyde Square Task Force’s activities as people come to the neighborhood to shop or eat. Hyde Square Task Force helps kids stay on task, off the street, and focused on the future.

Interactive-arts initiatives will provide a space for neighbors and community members to meet and build relationships.

Year-round programming includes: our summer series, !Viva el Latin Quarter!; a Latin Quarter Arts Festival; seasonal events; and special pop-up activities throughout the year.

Cultural events and festivals will raise visibility of Boston’s Latin Quarter and increase foot traffic and business for local merchants.
