NursingAssociate in Applied Science Degree

The Nursing Program at County College of Morris (CCM)began in 1968 and is well respected in the surrounding community. The program offers a course of study leading to the Associate in Applied Science Degree and prepares students for employment as registered nurses in a variety of healthcare fields.

These opportunities include inpatient settings such as hospital acute care, rehabilitation and long term care. Outpatient settings include home care, clinics, same-day surgery and physician offices. Specialty areas include adult medical-surgical, cardiac, pediatric, mother-baby and psychiatric staff nurse positions. Our graduates make a difference in the lives of their patients and the community at large.

Students who wish to pursue admittance into the Nursing Program should apply to CCM and list nursing as their requested major. Upon acceptance into the college, students are placed in the pre-professional phase, pending admission into the professional (clinical) phase.

Pre-Professional PhaseThis phase is for students who are currently not enrolled in or eligible for admission into the professional (clinical) phase. Students in this phase can take all of the general education and science courses required for the nursing major. They can study full or part-time and in the day or evening. Professional PhaseThis phase includes the clinical nursing core courses. Students must file a Fundamentals of Nursing Professional Phase Application Form which is available at the Office of Records and Registration to be considered for acceptance into this phase. Students must be accepted for admission to the college before the Fundamentals of Nursing Professional Phase Application Form can be filed. A day and evening study track if offered (see deadlines in the following sections for specific tracks).

Day and Evening Study TracksThe day track sequence begins in the fall semester. The Fundamentals of Nursing Professional Phase Application Form must be filed for the day track by March 1 in the Office of Records and Registration. The evening track sequence begins in the spring semester. The Fundamentals of Nursing Professional Phase Application Form must be filed for the evening track by September 15 in the Office of Records and Registration. Although classes held on campus follow day and evening hours, clinical times vary widely. Flexibility in schedules is necessary due to the clinical requirement of the program. Clinical placements are based on clinical affiliate availability. Clinical times may overlap day and evening schedules. Examples of clinical times that may be assigned include 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. and 1 p.m. to 11 p.m. regardless of day or evening track.

Advanced Placement Study TrackThis study track is designed for students who are seeking advanced standing in the Nursing Program. The students must have previously earned college credits and have a current license and experience as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN). All pre and co-requisites should be completed prior to entry with a GPA of 2.5 or higher. NUR 012, Nursing Transition is a mandatory pre-requisite course for students

accepted into the Advanced Placement Program. NUR 105, Foundations of Nursing is concurrently taken with NUR 123, Basic Medical/Surgical Nursing. Students interested must apply through the chair of the Nursing department for advanced placement. Those interested in being admitted to NUR 123 in the evening program must complete the LPN Intent Form by April 1 and those who wish to be admitted to NUR 123 in the day program must complete the LPN Intent Form by October 15. The form is available in the Nursing department. A student may be admitted in the Advanced Placement Study Track one time only.

Admission into the Professional PhaseAcceptance into the professional phase is competitive. Completion of pre-requisites does not guarantee admission into the professional phase. A student’s GPA must be 2.5 or higher at the time the Fundamentals of Nursing Professional Phase Application Form is filed. A ranking system is utilized. Points are assigned to English and science grades. If a student has taken a course multiple times prior to obtaining a passing grade, it will affect a student’s ranking. Priority consideration is given to students who take their pre-requisite courses at CCM. English and science courses transferred in from other institutions receive a fixed value for course completion that is not based on the grade earned. All science courses must have been taken within the past seven years. Grades for all courses must be a C or better. Students who have taken science courses prior to this seven year cutoff must prove competency by testing provided at CCM or retake the course.

All students accepted into the professional phase of the program must undergo an annual criminal history background check and urine drug screening, obtain health clearance, be CPR certified by the American Heart Association, purchase malpractice insurance and carry personal health insurance that provides coverage for accidents and illness. There are requisite functional abilities (technical standards) that must be met for admission, progression and graduation from the Nursing Program. Students with disabilities should contact the Office of Counseling Services concerning their needs.

Articulation AgreementsCCM credits from the Nursing Program are readily transferable towards a four-year nursing degree (BSN) at many state and private colleges and universities. CCM currently has articulation agreements with The College of St. Elizabeth, Drexel University, Montclair State University, Ramapo College of New Jersey, Thomas Edison State University, and Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey, to offer students the opportunity to take classes at CCM that will qualify for BSN transfer credits in partner programs. Many students have gone on to complete their BSN and other advanced degrees.

AccreditationThe Nursing Program at CCM is fully accredited and approved by the New Jersey Board of Nursing. This accreditation qual-ifies graduates of the Nursing Program to sit for the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses, (NCLEX-RN). The program is additionally accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing, Inc.

Career OpportunitiesNurses remain an integral component in the provision of healthcare in the United States. Although the local and national need for nurses fluctuates, our graduates are finding employment upon graduation and passage of the NCLEX-RN in a variety of settings, including hospital acute care, rehabilitation facilities, sub-acute and long-term care and home health care. Working in healthcare prior to graduation and having a plan for BSN completion also facilitates RN employment post graduation.

ScholarshipsThere are multiple scholarships available for nursing students from both corporate and private donors. Information regarding these scholarships can be obtained in the Financial Aid office.

FacultyAll nursing faculty hold a minimum of a master’s degree in nursing. Many have additional preparation and certification in nursing education and advanced nursing practice. All participate in ongoing scholarly and professional activities to remain up-to-date on clinical and educational topics. Faculty

are actively involved in professional nursing organizations, such as the American Nurses Association, Sigma Theta Tau, the Associate Degree Nursing Council, the New Jersey Board of Nursing and many specialty nursing organizations. Faculty are presenters on their topics of expertise at conferences and continuing education seminars.

Transfer StudentsStudents seeking to transfer credits from another institution must first apply as a student to CCM. Students should indicate Nursing as a major. Students should have their transcripts sent to and evaluated by the Office of Records and Registration, and then come to the Nursing Department for academic advisement. Transcripts should be sent to the Office of Records and Registration for evaluation.

FacilitiesStudents in the Nursing Program at CCM are provided with a technologically advanced nursing education. The Blackboard Learning Management System is used to enhance classroom instruction and to provide support materials, such as a review of lecture presentations in PowerPoint and audio format. Faculty communicate with students via Blackboard facilitated email and online office hours and during in-person advisement. The nursing laboratory is equipped with both high- and mid-fidelity patient simulators that enhance learning by simulating realistic clinical situations in a controlled setting. Up-to-date software, including interactive virtual clinical excursions, equipment and models are available for demonstration and student practice. The nursing laboratory is staffed by registered nurse lab coordinators and is open both day and evening.

Students in this program have an opportunity to participate in clinical rotations in many different hospital and community health settings. The health care facilities available to our students include Chilton Medical Center, Genesis Health Care/Troy Hills Center, Hackettstown Regional Medical Center, Matheny School and Medical Center, Morristown Medical Center, Overlook Medical Center, Newton Medical Center, Morris View Health Care Center, Somerset Medical Center, St. Barnabas Medical Center and St. Clare’s Health System.

Title IX, Section 504 and Americans with Disabilities Act ComplianceIn accordance with the policies underlying Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, the American with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990, the ADA Amended Acts (ADAA) of 2010 and County College of Morris policy, no qualified individual with a disability shall, solely on the basis of that disability, be excluded from participation to County College of Morris programs or activities. Upon admission, a candidate who discloses a disability may be asked to provide documentation of that disability. The Nursing Program at the County College of Morris will provide reasonable accommodations to a qualified individual with a disability through support of Accessibility Services. County College of Morris is not required to provide academic adjustments that would lower academic standards, fundamentally alter the nature of the program or impose an undue burden on the college. Students can provide appropriate documentation to Accessibility Services directly to qualify for reasonable accommodations. Student should contact Accessibility Services at 973-328-5284 or [email protected]. Students should not submit documentation to any other program administrator for review. Reasonable accommodations for the academic environment and the clinical environment are administered through two separate and distinct processes in collaboration with Accessibility Services, the Nursing Department and the individual student.

Criminal Background Check and Drug ScreeningA statewide criminal record search through the New Jersey State Police and a National Criminal History Database Search is performed on all students upon initial acceptance into the professional phase of the program and annually thereafter. If a record is found as a result of the criminal record searches, admission into the professional phase of the program may be denied. If there is no record upon admission but subsequent searches result in a record found, the student may be immediately dismissed from the program.

When a graduate applies for licensure as a nurse in New Jersey, the New Jersey Board of Nursing requires a Criminal History Background Check. If the Criminal History Background Check reveals a criminal conviction, a review of the application by the Board of Nursing is required.

A urine drug screening is performed on all students upon initial acceptance into the professional phase of the program. If the test is positive for illegal substances, admission into the professional phase of the program is denied. In addition, illegal use of prescribed substances will result in denial of admission into the professional phase of the program.
