BACKGROUND

Leading Integrated Research for Agenda 2030 in Africa (LIRA 2030 Africa) is a 5-year programme of the International Council for Science (ICSU), implemented in partnership with the Network of African Science Academies (NASAC) and the International Social Science Council (ISSC). The programme aims to foster collaborations between early career scientists in Africa across scientific disciplines (to build inter-disciplinary research teams involving social and natural scientists), and between researchers and stakeholders in business, policy and civil society (i.e. trans-disciplinary research), in order to generate solutions-oriented knowledge required to address complex sustainability challenges in Mrica.

The programme will support regional collaborative research projects on global sustainability, with a particular focus on global environmental change, disaster risk reduction, sustainable energy and human health and well-being in the urban environment. The global research programmes Future Earth, Integrated Research on Disaster Risk (IRDR), and Health and Wellbeing in the Changing Urban Environment (UHW) will provide an overall thematic framing for the programme's activities. In that way, the programme will increase participation of the African scientific community in the implementation of these global research programmes. The programme will also promote the integration of gender

equity and poverty reduction dimensions in research practice and content.

Over the 5 years, the programme will launch three thematic calls for pre-proposals. Following each call, representatives of successful pre-proposals will be invited to attend a five-day training on integrated research that will strengthen scientific capacity to apply novel methodologies on knowledge co-design and co-production, and other relevant approaches required for undertaking high quality integrated research. Modules on proposal development and science communication will also be part of the training. Following the training. its participants will be given 2 months to develop full proposals. Successful full proposals will receive collaborative research grants up to 90000 Euro each over two years. Only participants of the training events on integrated research will be eligible to apply for the full grants.

After 5 years. the programme aims to consolidate a network of over 30 integrated research projects on global sustainability. The research produced by these projects should provide the evidence and create tools to support decision-making on complex sustainability challenges in Mrica. The lmowledge will also be used to inform intergovernmental policy processes and assessments (e.g. the Sendai Framework on Disaster Risk Reduction. IPCC. the New Urban Agenda, and others). This lmowledge will also contribute to the implementation of Sustainable Development Goals, particularly those concerning poverty, energy, cities, health, climate-related hazards and natural disasters.

The programme will organize annual research forums to foster collaboration and networking between the supported research projects. Projects' representatives will be invited to attend these events to share their results and experien ce with th eir peers. These events are expected to promote scientific exchanges and forge new research collaboration among projects.
