On Offense:• Junior co-captain and All-Ivy League selection Mitch Vanderlaan returns after leading the team in goals (15) and points (28) last year. His 47 career points are the most for a Cornellian after his first two seasons since current Boston Bruins forward Riley Nash in 2009.• Senior Trevor Yates scored eight of his 12 goals last year on the power play, and junior Anthony Angello tied Yates for second-most goals on the team after scoring seven times in the season’s final 14 games.• Senior co-captain Alex Rauter returns to full-time duty at forward after filling in on the blue line late last season. He broke out for 17 points last year after posting just six in his first two seasons with the Big Red.• Junior Beau Starrett played top-six minutes during the second half of last season and posted 14 points on four goals and 10 assists. Sophomore Jeff Malott led the team’s newcomers with six goals.• Five of Cornell’s six NHL draft picks are forwards.

On Defense:• Three of the team’s top four blueliners return from a team that ranked 10th in the nation defensively last year, despite being ravaged by injuries.• Junior Alec McCrea led the team’s defensemen with a plus-11 rating last year, despite frequently matching up against the opposition’s top forwards. • Sophomore Yanni Kaldis was selected to the All-Ivy first team and ECAC Hockey All-Rookie Team last year. His 14 points in league play were the most for a Cornell freshman blueliner in 20 years.• Senior Ryan Bliss should return after missing all of last year due to injury.• Three freshmen join the defensive corps, including Edmonton Oilers draft pick Matt Cairns.

In Goal:• Senior Hayden Stewart is the lone incumbent in the crease, having posted a 2.27 goals against average and .918 save percentage with two shutouts in eight starts and 15 career appearances.• Freshmen Matthew Galajda and Austin McGrath join the squad via Cana-dian Junior A leagues. Galajda is a former BCHL All-Star, and McGrath was a finalist for AJHL Rookie of the Year.

- 3 - Oct. 14-15, 2017 ∙ Guelph / Ottawa exhibitions

About Guelph:• The Gryphons opened their Ontario University Athletics season Wednesday with a 3-2 victory over Brock. Nick Boyer scored the winning goal with 6:41 left.• Andrew Masters made 35 saves to earn the victory. He was on Miami’s roster last season, but did not appear in any games before transferring to Guelph.• The Gryphons tied Clarkson, 3-3, in a Sept. 30 exhibition in Potsdam. Guelph scored all of its goals in the second period — the last coming from defense-man Patrick Kudla, an Arizona Coyotes draft pick.• Guelph was 15-13 last year, when Seth Swenson led the team with 32 points on 12 goals and 20 assists in 28 games.

About Ottawa:• The Gee-Gees play their OUA regular-season opener Thursday at Carleton before Saturday’s home opener against Concordia, but they have already played six exhibitions. • Two of those were against NCAA Division I teams — a 5-1 loss Sept. 30 at Robert Morris and a 4-3 overtime victory the next night at Penn State.• Ottawa was 15-13 in OUA play last year, which was its first under head coach Patrick Grandmaitre. Kevin Domingue led the team in scoring with 31 points on 16 goals and 15 assists in 28 games.• Goaltender Anthony Brodeur is the son of legendary former NHL goalie Martin Brodeur, who is now an assistant GM with the St. Louis Blues.

Feel The Draft?:• Cornell has six players on the roster who have been selected in the NHL Entry Draft, including four from 2014. Junior forward Beau Starrett (Chicago Blackhawks) was selected earliest in that group, having been taken in the third round with the 88th overall pick. • Classmate Anthony Angello, also a forward, was selected in the fifth round by the Pittsburgh Penguins. Junior forwards Jared Fiegl (Arizona Coyotes) and Dwyer Tschantz (St. Louis Blues) were then picked in the seventh round. • Two newcomers are also NHL draft picks — forward Morgan Barron (N.Y. Rangers in 2017) and defenseman Matt Cairns (Edmonton Oilers in 2016).

First Ivy League Coach To 400:• Already the winningest coach in program history and in Ivy League his-tory, Mike Schafer eclipsed another milestone in his career with his 400th victory last January. • Schafer ranks 10th in victories among active Division I coaches and is Cornell’s fifth-winningest coach across all sports — second among current coaches, behind just Dave Eldredge (men’s and women’s polo).

Turning The Trick:• After having no hat tricks since 2011, the Big Red had two last year. Mitch Vanderlaan’s hat trick Nov. 12 at Yale earned him ECAC Hockey Player of the Week on Nov. 15. He potted a couple more goals Nov. 19 against Princeton to become the first player from Cornell with seven goals in the first seven games of the season since Blake Gallagher did so in 2009-10.• Jeff Malott then scored his first three collegiate goals in a span of 8 min-utes, 44 seconds during the first period to power the Big Red past Princeton on Jan. 13. He was subsequently named ECAC Hockey Rookie of the Week after becoming the first Cornell freshman with a hat trick since current NHLer Matt Moulson on Feb. 7, 2003.

What, Me Worry?:• Eight of Cornell’s 21 victories last season came in games in which the Big Red surrendered the first goal, with the team maintaining a winning record even when it conceded first.• The Big Red’s resilience from an early deficit has become somewhat of a trend, with the team sporting a very respectable 21-20-8 record when yield-ing the game’s first strike over the last two years. That’s a stark turnaround from the team’s 14-34-5 record when yielding the game’s first goal from the previous three seasons (2012-15).

Up Next:• Cornell will take a week off from game action, playing its annual Red/White Game next Saturday before opening the regular season with a pair of non-league games Oct. 27-28 against visiting Alabama-Huntsville. • The Big Red then opens ECAC Hockey play on the road, starting Nov. 3 at Quinnipiac.

ECAC Hockey Preseason Polls

Cornell was predicted to finish third by both the media and the coaches in the annual ECAC Hockey preseason polls, which were released in September. When Mike Schafer returned to his alma mater as the 12th head coach in Cor-nell men’s hockey history in the summer of 1995, his goal was to return the Big Red program to a position of national prominence. Having now completed 22 seasons behind the Cornell bench in 2016-17, he has clearly accomplished that objective by guiding the Big Red to the NCAA tournament 10 times, including a berth in the NCAA Frozen Four in 2002-03, the program’s first since 1980.

Schafer is Cornell Hockey’s second-longest tenured coach, while his 412-242-89 record has him as the winningest coach in Cornell men’s hockey history. He picked up his 231st career victory on Jan. 27, 2007, a 2-1 victory against Colgate at Lynah Rink, to become the program’s all-time wins leader. Schafer reached the 400-win mile-stone in 2017, a mark previously reached by only 43 coaches in all of college hockey.

Coming hand-in-hand with Cornell’s success on the national scene, the Big Red has been one of the top programs in ECAC Hockey during Schafer’s tenure. Cornell has claimed five ECAC Hockey tournament titles, the most all-time in league history, and staking a claim to three regular-season crowns. He has a career 268-148-68 re-cord in ECAC Hockey regular-season play and a 58-29-2 mark in the ECAC Hockey playoffs.

His peers have taken notice of his accomplishments, awarding him the ECAC Hockey Coach of the Year award three times during his career. He is also a three-time finalist for the Spencer T. Penrose Award, presented to the national coach of the year. He has also regularly had the Big Red ranked among the nation’s elite over the past decade, including reaching as high as third in both the USCHO.com and the USA To-day/USA Hockey polls in 2008-09 and fourth in both polls in 2012-13. Cornell has also held the top spot in the polls during the 2002-03 and 2004-05 seasons.

Schafer guided the Big Red to the ECAC Hockey tournament title in 1995-96 and 1996-97, becoming the first Cornell coach to win ECAC Hockey tournament titles in his first two seasons. His five tournament titles surpassed the legendary Ned Harkness for the most in program history. In 2002-03, he led the Big Red to the NCAA Frozen Four, setting a school record with 30 wins, going one better than the undefeated, untied 29-0-0 national championship squad of 1969-70. Cornell’s 2002-03 ECAC Hockey mark of 19-2-1 was Cornell’s best mark since the 1969-70 team went 21-0 in league play.

Schafer has a .614 career winning percentage following the 2016-17 season, which saw the Big Red return to the NCAA champi-onships with an at-large bid after Cornell advanced to the ECAC Hockey championship game. Additionally, his 412 career victories rank in the Top 10 among active Division I coaches. Most recently, the Big Red has advanced to at least the ECAC Hockey Champi-onship semifinals a league-best nine times over the last 13 seasons. The Big Red has finished the season ranked in the USCHO.com poll in seven of the last nine seasons.

During Schafer’s tenure, Cornell players have earned numerous ECAC Hockey awards, including a pair of Player of the Year hon-ors, four Ken Dryden Awards for the league’s top goaltender, four Defenseman of the Year awards, seven Defensive Forwards of the Year and four Rookies of the Year. Additionally, three players have earned ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-America honors a total of four times.

Flanagan helped guide the Big Red back to the NCAA championships for the first time in five years after a couple stops fol-

lowing a four-year playing career at St. Lawrence. His most recent experience was at UMass-Lowell, where he served as the River Hawks’ director of hockey operations for the 2015-16 season. Prior to that, Flanagan was the assistant coach at Hobart from 2012-15. Working under former Cornell assistant coach Mark Taylor with the Statesmen, Flanagan helped build a team that won the ECAC West title in 2015 and 2016 to reach the NCAA tournament. Ho-bart was the No. 1 seed in the NCAA’s East Region last year.

No stranger to ECAC Hockey, Flanagan played 121 career games with St. Lawrence up to the 2010-11 season. He racked up 12 goals and 40 assists for 52 points, helping the Saints advance to the league’s championship weekend twice over his four years. He served as an assistant captain during his senior season, then went on to play professionally with the Las Vegas Wranglers and Quad City Mallards in the ECHL.

Flanagan graduated from St. Lawrence with a bachelor of arts degree in history with a minor in sports studies and exercise sci-ences in 2010. He also earned a master of education degree from St. Lawrence in 2011.

Syer has completed six seasons with Cornell men’s hockey team, including five seasons as the associate head coach. Syer

joined the program in June 2011 as an assistant coach, taking over the lead role in recruiting as well as coaching the defense. He helped guide the Big Red to a 19-9-7 record and an appear-ance in the NCAA regional finals in his first season on East Hill, with the team ranking 11th in the country with a 2.26 goals-against average. After the season, he was promoted to Associate Head Coach.

In the six years Syer has been with the Big Red, the team has finished in the top 20 nationally in team defense five times — as high as seventh in 2014-15. Most recently, Syer’s deft manage-ment of the Big Red’s injury-riddled blue line helped the team rank 10th in the country in team defense last year, backstop-

pingthe team to the ECAC Hockey championship game and an at-large bid to the NCAA championships.

Syer previously served as Associate Head Coach during his 12 seasons at Quinnipiac under head coach Rand Pecknold. Dur-ing that run, the Bobcats posted a 242-168-46 record with one NCAA tournament appearance (2002) and nine 20-win seasons. Quinnipiac won the 2005 Atlantic Hockey regular season title and the 1999 MAAC regular season and 2002 MAAC tournament championship crowns during his tenure.

Quinnipiac reached the MAAC tournament semifinals in each of the first four years of Syer’s tenure, including three straight MAAC finals appearances. Included in that span were the 2002 MAAC tournament title and the first NCAA appearance in pro-gram history. The Bobcats also won the MAAC regular-season title in Syer’s first year at Quinnipiac.
