THE MATCH-UP...The No. 15 Gustavus men’s hockey team is set to get back into conference play with an away/home series against Saint John’s University this weekend.

Gustavus enters the series with an overall record of 9-4-2 and a MIAC mark of 3-3-0. Something’s gotta give this weekend as the Gusties are currently in a three-way tie for fourth place in the league standings with six points alongside Bethel and Hamline.

Saint John’s looks to get back on track and snap a four-game losing-streak entering the weekend. The Johnnies are currently 3-8-2 overall and 1-3-0 in the MIAC. They have two points and sit in a three-way tie for last place in the league with Saint Mary’s and Augsburg.

With their non-conference schedules now in rear-view mirror, both squads realize that points are on the line every weekend from this point on. Although the opening half of the conference season is a good barometer, its during the second half of the year that MIAC teams have to go out and earn it.

MEET THE GUSTAVUS COACHING STAFF... Head Coach Brett Petersen is in his 12th season as the head coach of the Gustavus men’s hockey team. Petersen entered the season with a 148-126-20 record in his 11 seasons at Gustavus. He has been named MIAC Coach of the Year twice in his tenure, once in 2001-02 after helping the Gusties make the jump from ninth place the year before to a second place finish in the conference, and again in 2009-10 after leading the Gusties to their first MIAC Title since 1993. Petersen, a Roseville, Minn. native, received his Bachelor of Science degree in business administration from the University of Denver in 1992 and his Master of Science degree in athletic administration in 2000 from St. Cloud State.

Petersen is assisted by Jared Phillips and Aaron Hoiland. Jared Phillips, a 2003 graduate of Gustavus, is in his third season as the full-time assistant coach with the men’s hockey program.Phillips, a Bemidji, Minnesota native was a two-year letterwinner for the Gustie hockey team as a goaltender from 2001 to 2003. He completed his master’s degree in applied kinesiology with an emphasis in sports management at the University of Minnesota in the summer of 2009. Jared also serves as the Athletic Department’s Compliance Coordinator.

Aaron Hoiland joins the Gustavus men’s hockey program for his sixth season as a volunteer assistant coach. Originally from Anoka, Hoiland is a 1992 graduate of Forest Lake High School. After grad-uating from St. Thomas, Hoiland earned his Master of Arts degree in English from Stephen F. Austin State University in 2003.

MEET THE SAINT JOHN’S COACHING STAFF… Doug Schueller is in his fourth season as the Saint John’s head hockey coach. Schueller became the 22nd head coach in the history of Johnnie hockey. Prior to becoming the head coach at SJU, Schueller served as an assistant coach at NCAA Division I Bowling Green State University. He is a 2001 graduate of Bowling Green and a three-time captain for the Falcons. He went on to complete his Master’s degree (business administration in sports management) from the University of Coventry Business School (Coventry, England) in 2005.

Coach Schueller is assisted by Pat Forte (Bemidji State `89), Chad Hmmerding, and R.J. Linder (MSU-Mankato `08).

AROUND THE GLOBE...The 2011-12 Gustavus Adolphus men’s hockey team features 22 players who previously played junior hockey on 14 different teams. Coach Brett Petersen’s squad fea-tures players from six states; Minnesota (19), California (2), Texas (1), New Hampshire (1), Nevada (1), Oklahoma (1), and three countries outside the U.S. in Canada, Norway, and Sweden.

RANK AND FILE...The Gustie skaters cracked the top-15 for the first time this season according to Monday’s USCHO.com Division III Men’s Hockey Poll.

Gustavus ranks No. 15 in the nation and is one of two MIAC schools to earn a spot in the top-15. St. Thomas joins Gustavus one spot ahead at No. 14.

LAST WEEKEND... The Gustavus men’s hockey team is coming off a pair of non-conference home victories over St. Scholastica and UW-Superior. The Gusties defeated St. Scholastica 3-2 on Friday night thanks to a game-winning goal by Ross-Ring Jarvi with less than two minutes on the clock in the third period. Gustavus was able to hold on for its second-straight one-goal win on Saturday night against UW-Superior, edging the Yellowjackets 2-1 thanks to a 20-save third period within a 30-save night by goaltender John McLean.

SCOUTING THE JOHNNIES...The Johnnies were in action last weekend, Jan. 6-7. SJU fell 3-0 to UW-River Falls on Friday and 4-1 to UW-Eau Claire on Saturday.

The Johnnie skaters are led in scoring by freshman forward John Haeg and junior forward Jascha Pettit. Haeg leads the team with 13 points (1G, 12A), while Pettit has 10 points (5G, 5A).

Between the pipes has been senior Tony Civello. Civello is 3-8-0 with a 3.31 goals against average and an .884 save percentage.

THE SERIES...This weekend’s games will be the 105th and 106th meetings between the Gusties and Johnnies on the ice. Gustavus holds the advantage in the all-time series with a mark of 58-42-5.

Gustavus and Saint John’s skated to a 3-3 tie in the opening game of the 2011-12 season at the MIAC Showcase on Oct. 11 in Blaine. After Zach May notched his second goal of the game to put Gustavus up 3-1 late in the second period, Saint John’s responded with two goals in the third to tie the game at 3-3. Gustavus outshot the Johnnies 32-to-22 in the game.

NATIONAL HOCKEY CENTER NIGHTMARES...The National Hockey Center has been a place of nightmares for the Gustavus men’s hockey the past 19 seasons. The Gusties have currently lost eight straight in St. Cloud and have a 1-17-1 record over the past 19 seasons on the Johnnies’ home ice. The Gusties fell 3-1 in their last trip to St. Cloud. Saint John’s scored two unanswered goals after Gustavus tied the game 1-1 late in the first period.

BIG YEAR AGAINST THE NCHA...With wins over the Saints and Yellowjackets last weekend, Gustavus finishes the season with a 4-0-1 record against representatives of the NCHA. It is the first time in Head Coach Brett Petersen’s tenure that his Gusties finished their regular season schedule unbeaten against their neighbors from the east. Coach Petersen has compiled a record of 30-31-4 against the NCHA in his 12 seasons behind the Gustavus bench.

in Gustavus’ three non-conference wins over UW-River Falls, St. Scholastica, and UW-Superior. McLean went 3-0-0 and picked off two ranked teams within the frame. He allowed just four goals and made 89 saves for a .957 save percentage.

McLean is currently the ninth-ranked goalie in the nation, entering the weekend with an 8-3-0 record. He carries a 9.35 save percentage (2nd/MIAC) and a 1.90 goals against average (1.90). The six-foot-eight freshman is the only netminder in the MIAC with a goals against average under two goals.

SECOND HALF...The Gusties are off to a strong start in the 2012 calendar year. During coach Petersen’s time at the head of the Gustavus hockey program, the Gusties have compiled a record of 84-68-15 after the holiday break.

GOING STREAKING!...The Gustavus men’s hockey team is currently in the midst of a seven-game winning-streak. It is Gustavus’ longest winning-streak since the 2009-10 season when it won six games in a row.

RINGO AND GAME WINNERS...With the game-winning goal at the 18:11 point of the third period against St. Scholastica, forward Ross Ring-Jarvi met his career average for game-winners in a season. The senior captain has scored two game-winning goals in each of his first three seasons. With two game-winners this season, Ringo now has eight in his career.
