Following reports in whichthe Spanish hockey federa-tion is reported to have high-lighted the Consejo Superiorde Deportes’ warning thatSpanish teams are not toplay against Gibraltar teams,or select Gibraltarian playersCore understands that localplayers have been soughtout to play for Spanish clubs.

At least two male players arereported to be playing forhockey clubs up the costadel sol with one femaleplayer having been ap-proached to play in Spain.

Core also understands a for-mer national player alreadyplays in the Liga de Andalu-cia. His club having beenaware of the warnings andhaving intervened in order toregister the player in ques-tion. Whilst the reports sug-gest that there will besanctions for clubs playingGibraltarian players or par-ticipating in matches withGibraltar sides, since thewarnings were re-issued inNovember, which is whenCore understands the warn-

ings were first given, Span-ish sides have ignored thewarnings and have playedRegistered players fromGibraltar, trained in Gibraltarand participated in matchesagainst Gibraltar sides atyouth level.

The latest warnings were is-sued just before the Spanishgeneral elections and areseen locally as politically ori-ented policies affecting allsports, not just hockey, withthe Consejo Superior de De-portes having issued thispolicy to all sports clubs andorganisations as far back as2012.Similar policies alsoexisted as far back as 1999when Athletes were stoppedfrom flying the Gibraltar flagor registering with Spanishteams, which led to condem-nation from across the ath-letics fraternity.

The Consejo Superior deDeportes making mention intheir website the policieswhen commenting onSpain’s campaign to stop theGibraltar Rugby Associationfrom becoming a full mem-

ber of the European RugbyAssociation (FIRA-AER)back in 2013.

Spain’s political stanceagainst Gibraltar sportsmenand women had been metby resistance by varioussporting bodies with Gibral-tar teams and officials stillenjoying their participation insome events includingfriendly matches between re-gional teams, and lately theincreased business in thetransfer market which hasseen players from Spainjoining local teams in footballand clubs training and play-ing friendlies in Spain inpreparation for their season.

Manchesters' woes seemed to re-emerge on the 10th minute whendefender Payas called on his coachto replace him having injured himself.JP Duarte, who had himself indicatedbefore the match that he did notexpect to play more than ten minuteswas brought in taking up the rightflank. An astute re-organisation ofthe defence and frontline saw achange in gameplay as Britanniawere forced to keep Alt playingfurther back to cover for JP'spresence.

The first half saw few chances ateither end. Britannia threateningManchesters goal mostly fromstopped ball play, whilst Manchestershowed signs of threateningBritannia's goal from a few foragesforward on the break.

Algeciras legend provesshrewd purchase for

Lynx

Albert Parody, Manager and Direc-tor of Lynx, when asked about hisnew signings played down the in-troduction of his two new players, one of which was described by

Lynx supporters as a legend in Algeciras. Par-ody, however, indicated that he had not takenlightly who he was signing "not this time, Ihave learnt my lessons he said," as he com-mented on how he had asked players to at-tend a tryout for him to see how they

performed before making any decisions. Thishad led to even players whose resume de-scribed them as having played for Ajax, beingturned down.

This mere fact alone raised expectations onhow good was Santos Francisco Gomez,(Javi Chico), considering he was being linedup as first team players.

Javi Chico was soon to show his class. Just

his second match for Lynx, and still suppos-edly settling into the team the number tenwas true to his number as a playmaker.

As Lynx piled on the pressure againstGibraltar United from the very first few min-utes giving a clear indication on how thematch would transpire, Javi Chico took littletime to take control of the midfield. Not onlyrunning around into free space and creatingspace with his passing, he was also clear-ing the general controlling the men as hestarted positioning his colleagues intospace,

Lynx players were more than willing to playthe ball to him, as they controlled posses-sion pinning Gibraltar United back. As lynxtried to find a way through, pushing the ballquickly through midfield and trying to findspace to run through the flanks, GibraltarUnited kept their form, controlled by the bel-lowing Goldwyn, whose constant commandof his defense saw them positioning them-selves to block Lynx's way through into thepenalty area.

Lynx, nevertheless, reached goal on sev-eral occasions forcing Jared Buhagiar toclear of the line from a corner on at leastone occasion. The flying Chino, GibraltarUnited keeper Goldwyn, was once again toprove a why many consider him to be thebest goalkeeper in the first division this sea-son. Goldwyn was to prove Sastrie's worstnightmare as he first cleared a header, andthen saved in mid-air a point blank shotwhich would have rocketed into the back ofthe net had Chino not been in the way. Allthis in a matter of minutes.

Chino's flying saves and heroics were, how-ever, not enough to keep Javi Chico from

scoring his first goals in the first division. As Badr broke through the right flank, hecrossed dangerously into the middle, hiscross met by a flying punch from Goldwynwhich in other days would have put the ballout to safety. With Lynx deep in Gibraltar’shalf, the ball was immediately struck back intothe penalty area where Javi Chico took ad-vantage of a rebound to curve the ball into theback of the net at the far post. The ball at firstseeming to be going out, but just slotting intothe corner,

Gibraltar United continued to defend deep, keeping Lynx out by leaving few spaces toplay through. Carl Thomas, EL Andaloussiand Gallardo proving to be stalwarts in de-fense.

As the pressure continued Sastrie run into thebox forcing Goldwyn into a penalty. Sastriestepped forward to take it. Powering the balland with Goldwyn beaten the ball bounced offthe post and ended up going out for a goal

kick.

Lynx, continued to look for a second, and withjust seconds to go for the first half to finishGibraltar United conceded a foul outside thepenalty box. The ball was passed short to theright of the wall and Javi Chico curled a shotto the near post sinking the ball into the backof the net. Goldwyn was unable to reach theshot diving late for it as the unexpected shotpassed over a Lynx player who dived out ofthe way blocking the keepers line of sightThe second half started much the same wayas the first with Lynx piling the pressure onGibraltar United's defense who maintainedtheir form throughout making it difficult to pen-etrate. United for their part attempted to pushforward when they could, but with Montoviotheir only front man, they found it difficult toout run the Lynx defense.

The third goal came from another stop ball sit-uation. Javi Chico once again stamped hispedigree on the match to score his hat trick.

A curled corner went over the GibraltarUnited defense and into the back of the netat the far post. The same post just minutesearlier the bellowing Goldwyn had beenheard shouting for his defense to cover.

With three goals up now, Lynx sloweddown a gear. This allowed Gibraltar Unitedto venture forward. For the last fifteen min-utes it was the Lynx defense that had toclear the danger as Montovio proved to bea handful as Gibraltar United went forward. As the match came to its dying seconds afree kick outside the box led to the ballbeing swung into the box. Montoviojumped for it and flicked the ball in the airto the left of Robba and into the back of thenet. Robba who had little to do throughoutthe match angry at his defense for allowingMontovio space to score.

Gibraltar United sought for the next fewminutes to score a second as Lynx contin-ued to leave them to push forward.

Lions mauled tosubmission by

rejuvenated Glacis

Lions were leftlicking theirpaws onMonday night asGlacis, with their

three new signs "shockedand awed" them intosubmission with a six goalhammering.

From the first minute ofplay Glacis intent wasclear lunging forwardthrough the flanks withtheir newly signedattacker Lopez outrunning Lions defence, with Cortes Narvaez,Barrieta and Nunez alljoining forces to tear Lionsdefence apart. On thevery first minute a runthrough the flank led to aheader from closer rangewhich required anoutstretched Szpilczynskito punch away acrossgoal away from danger.

The first 20 minutes sawLions on the backfoot,

unable to keep possession for more than afew seconds as Glacis won most of everybounce, rebound and run for the ball. In thefew occasions Lions managed to get the ballin those minutes they opted for long passesforward which were being dealt with by theGlacis defence with relative ease.

It was not up until the 20th minute that Lionssettled down into the game and calmed thepace down by keeping possession playingshort deliberate passes across defence andmidfield. Glacis were bombarded with deepcrosses into the centre, and runs throughthe centre, yet maintained their form kickingthe ball out to their front runners.

On the 35th Minute the Glacis defence wastested when a ball sunk deep into the sixyard box run menacingly towards anoncoming forward, with an outstretched legfrom the Glacis defence the only thingbetween goal and him.

Glacis were not to be prevented fromattempting further breaks forward, with runsthrough the flank causing the Lions defenceproblems. In one of this runs on the 40thminute, new signing Lopez forced a foul atthe edge of the box. The freekick was swunginto the centre over the heads of the Lionsdefence and was met by Nunez whochested to control and volleyed on the turnfrom just outside the six yard box past theLions keeper for the 1-0.

With the first half ending 1-0 both teamscame out to resume, pundits expectingLions possession to be maintained.

The words of Lions defender Rodriguez "tobelieve that it was still nil nil" seems to havebeen heeded more by the Glacis forwardthan his defence as Glacis once againrepeated their performance of the first half.

A run across the flank with a deep ball intothe centre led to a freekick conceded justoutside the box by Lions. The subsequentfreekick was curled into the centre of goal

where Szpilczynski had to punch it over thecrossbar for a corner.

Lions went on the attack forcing a save fromthe Glacis keeper on his line before Glacisstormed back towards Lions goal againusing the pace of their forwards to beatLions defence. A freekick conceded justoutside the penalty area saw Glacis passshort and with a curling shot around thedefensive wall Funes slotted it into the topfar corner for the 2-0 in his debut for the clubsince signing from Britannia last week.

Lions tried to go forward but foundthemselves running after balls being kickedout to the front line. The constant countersby Glacis rattled the Lions defence whostruggled to keep up with the pace, especially of Lopez, Cortes Narvaez,Barrieta and Nunez who maintained thepressure on the defence.

On the 30th Minute Glacis broke free in onesuch run and saw Cortes Narvaez receivethe ball in the air in just inside the penaltyarea and volleys a lob over Szpilczynski whowas coming out of his goal to block.

Minutes later Lopez breaks free from theLions defence on the right and slots it pastSzpilczynski as he came out to challengehim for the fourth.

The Lions defence were in disarray, with abuoyant Glacis hungry for more. Alreadyfour nil up and with Lopez and co winningmost runs on the flanks the ball once againfound Cortes Narvaez just inside the penaltyarea. WIth Szpilczynski once again off hislines, and the only thing between him andgoal, Lopez lobbed it over the keeper for thefifth.

Just one minute later, in what could only bedescribed as a repeat play, this time Lopesfound himself at the edge of the box withonly Szpilczynski between him and goal, and once again the ball was lobbed over the

Glacis, whoseseason had startedwith dismalperformances foundthemselves theunlikely winnershighlighting theprogress under thenew coaching staffnow managing theteam. The inclusionof three new signingsbringing fresh legsand ideas into thesquad.

BasketballBlue Stars Under 16 newchampions

The final of the Under 16s between BlueStars and Europa was a tense affair whichmade for what senior basketball officials de-scribed as probably the "best final so far"The tensions and excitement was main-tained throughout the first half as both teamsshared the lead between them.

Europa opened their lead from 4-0 downthrough a perfectly executed triple, thengoing on to score again to get the one point

lead at 4-5 early in the match. The tone of the match was soon to be seenas Rocca responded with his own triple forIsola Blue Stars.

With Isola Blue Stars netting four furtherpoints without respond to regain control ofthe scoreboard the first quarter finished at16-13.

Blue stars led 24-13 before Europa re-opened their scoring. The match momentarily settled with aseven point lead for Blue Stars as bothteams fought hard for possession. Justbefore half time Europa shortened thescore by stealing some crucial passesand placing Isola Blue Stars on the back-foot and placing themselves ahead with28-30.

For the next few minutes Isola Blue starsrhythmn seemed to hit a bump as theywere getting frustrated at not netting for aperiod of time. On regrouping, and withboth teams scoring low due to the tightdefences in place Isola Blue Stars tookadvantage and took up the lead againonce again ending the quarter ahead with a score of 35-32.

Isola Blue stars maintained their lead intothe half opening it to 43-36.

A couple of two pointers accepted at thesame time as fouls had been given aidingtheir progress.

Europa started to press at the top block-ing some passes forward and shorteningthe progress of Isola Blue Star players. The match went from end to end withboth teams hungry for a win.

A sudden glitche with the scoreboard asall the data was wiped-out momentarilyled to a short break whilst it was re-started. The restart saw Isola Blue Starsscoreboard caught out from a slow startand losing ground when their players didnot jump for rebounds and lost focus. Eu-ropa took advantage and took the score

48-49 to them with 2mins ofthe third quarter left. Theyhowever, were unable to keepthe lead with the third quarterending with Blue Stars with aslender lead of 52-49, andboth with all to play for in thefinal quarter. The last quarter as expectedwas a battle for the title bothteams running to win.

The tone of the match was notto change much as Isola Bluestars widened their lead to sixpoints only to see it cut backby a triple pointer.

Europa continued to presshigh, but were reliant more onindividual skills of two of theirplayers than the whole team.Isola Blue Stars, with theircoaches giving them instruc-tions from the bench through-out changed tactics and usedtheir minor height advantageto increase the lead to 62-55with just four minutes to go.As Europa attacked, a tighterswarming defence by the BlueStars halted their progress al-lowing them to get two pointsto Blue stars eight putting thescore at 70-57, with just twominutes left.

solid not allowing Hawks anyclear chances at goal, although not having manychances themselves to pushforward. The few attacks inthe first half were dealt withrapidly by Hawks defence. The first goal came in the30th minute when Hawkstook advantage of a shortcorner slotting the ball intothe back of the net from ahalf cleared rebound.

With Eagles one nil behind, the second half was to see achange of pace. Eaglesbegun to move forward, pushing Hawks lines backinto their own area. Thematch opened up as Eaglesmoved their lines forwardlooking for the equaliser. With Eagles attacking furtherthe space opened upbetween their front lines anddefence provided Hawkswith the opportunity to breakaway on the counter attack.

the better of the chances in thesecond half, with the ball crossing infront of goal on two separateoccasions, but with no-one there toslot it in.

Eagles pressure was to pay off whentheir number 7 picked up the ball atthe edge of the D and turned to strikeit across goal and into the far post inwhat was to be the equaliser.

The goal saw Eagles pick upconfidence, taking advantage ofHawks momentary collapse in focusas they reorganised. Eagles piled onthe pressure sniffing a chance toscore another. Within minutes a wellexecuted short corner was slottedpast the keeper making it 2-1 forEagles.

Seconds later another short cornersaw stand-in keeper for Hawks, following last week's injury to theirfirst choice keeper, making a savewhich kept Hawks still with a chanceto come back. With just minutes to go Hawkspressed forward looking for theequaliser. A quick counter attack sawthe ball skid across the front of anempty Eagles goal with Hawksfrontline unable to get to it.

Eagles regrouped at the back, tightening their defensive play andtaking on the same format they hadstarted the game with. Hawks piledon the pressure, lunging forward to tryand get the equaliser to no avail.

Solid defensive play by Eagles in thelast few minutes of play kept Hawksout of reach of goal once again givingthem the victory on the final whistle. An exciting match in which punditshad it difficult to predict the final scoreended Eagles 2-1 Hawks.

Juniors

Last Thursday saw the first round ofleague matches for junior hockey play-ers.

On the 7 a side pitch Grammariansboys beat the Falcons girls 6-4 and theEagles boys got the better of the Hawksgirls 4-0.

Normally there would be three matcheson the 9 a side pitch. However, militaryaction in the form of helicopters, meantthat the floodlights were unable to beerected. Therefore at the time of writingFalcons girls have yet to play Gram-marians girls.

Other results were: Grammarians boys 2, Eagles girls 1;Eagles boys 6, Hawks girls 1.

Not a bad effort for the Hawks girls, who have just moved up from 7 s sideto enter the 9 a side league.

This Thursday there will be no leaguematches as the RAF ladies will becoaching our juniors in a series of work-shops. Approximately 100 juniors willbe taking part in this great initiative.Media coverage would be greatly ap-preciated.

Ladies resultsIt was a very special and emotional dayfor the Eagles ladies as a one minutesilence was held just before the gamestarted, in memory of team mate Su-sanna Hernandez. Eagles ladies wouldlike to thank the support received fromthe local media, umpires, Hawks ladiesand family that attended on the day.
