Learning

Established in 1963, recognized by the Dan-ish Ministry of Education and accredited by the Council of International Schools as well as the

New England Association of Schools and Colleges, Co-penhagen International School provides a complete educational program for students from ages 3 to 18. One of the five founding member schools of the Inter-national Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme, CIS is the premier international school in Scandinavia.

CIS operates on two different campuses, one near the city center for grades 9-12 and one in Hellerup just north of Copenhagen, for grades Pre-K–8. It only takes 15 minutes to get from one campus to the other by public transport.

The student body comes from over 50 countries, with the largest representations from the United States, the United Kingdom and Denmark. In a recent graduating class, there were 32 nations represented among the 47 graduates.

Learning

Copenhagen International School follows the Interna-tional Baccalaureate Programmes. Our curriculum of-fers students a broad-based, challenging and reflective education with an international perspective. English is the primary language of instruction throughout the school. For those students whose English is not yet ful-ly developed, there is English as an additional language (EAL) instruction available, as well as in-class support. For those who have no English language background, intensive 1:1 instruction is also available.

Students at CIS are offered a broad-based, challenging and reflective education with an international perspective

Our mission isto develop the potential of each student in a stimulating environment of cultural diversity, academic excellence and mutual respect.

Primary School

The Primary Years Programme (PYP) is an international curric-ulum framework which combines the best research and practice from national school systems with the collective knowledge and experience of international schools, to provide an excellent edu-cational program for children aged 3-11 in grades Pre-Kinder-garten through 5. It is an inquiry-based programme for children from diverse cultures and language backgrounds and is transfer-able within national and international systems.

We focus on the development of the whole child – academic, so-cial, physical and emotional which is expressed in the IB Learner Profile: to encourage young people to become inquirers, think-ers, communicators, risk-takers, knowledgeable, principled, car-ing, open-minded, balanced, and reflective.

The Primary School experience culminates with students work-ing on a project called the Exhibition. Through this long-term, collaborative inquiry students demonstrate their abilities to ques-tion, acquire knowledge, form opinions, present information, re-flect and take action on an issue which concerns them. In this way, the grade 5 students come to appreciate that as their knowl-edge and skills develop, they are more empowered to make a positive difference in the ‘real world’.

Secondary School

Middle Years

The school employs the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP), which is designed to meet the particular edu-cational needs of students between 11 and 16 years in grades 6 through 10. The Secondary School comprises two developmentally appropriate divisions with their own dedicated administrators, the Middle School for grades 6 through 8 and the Senior School for grades 9 through 12.

Students are encouraged to question and evaluate infor-mation critically, to seek out and explore links between subjects, and to relate the content of the classroom to the realities of the world outside. The MYP is based upon five Areas of Interaction, which are themes wo-ven throughout their studies. The Areas of Interaction are: Approaches to Learning, Health and Social Educa-tion, Environments, Human Ingenuity, Community & Service.

In their final year of the MYP in grade 10, students conduct a personal project. The goals of the person-al project are to give students an opportunity to ex-plore a topic about which they are enthusiastic, conduct a project from conception to realization, and demon-strate their understanding of the skills and concepts of the Middle Years Programme. Students have focused on scientific research, development or application of new technologies, business plans, “how to” books and movies, poetry, drama, musical compositions, fashion design, documentaries, fundraising and awareness cam-paigns, and sustainable architecture.

Secondary School

Diploma Years

The IB Diploma Programme is for 11th and 12th grade students (ages 16-18). All students entering the Diplo-ma Years at CIS study the subject courses offered by the International Baccalaureate over a two-year period. The courses include a variety of subject groups, includ-ing the arts, as well as the Theory of Knowledge.

At the end of this period, our students sit for exams prepared by the International Baccalaureate Organiza-tion.

Graduating students achieve both the IB Diploma – a prestigious certificate with world recognition – and an American High School Diploma.

Most students at CIS take the full IB Diploma, study-ing six subjects along with the three compulsory core areas of Theory of Knowledge, the 4000 word Extend-ed Essay, and CAS – Creativity, Action and Service. For some, however, the option of taking fewer subjects as individual certificates is available. Since many of our graduates go on to further study in the US, we also take seriously the need for a High School Diploma: success-ful completion of the two year IB Diploma Programme therefore leads automatically to the award of a High School Diploma.

ARTS

AthleticsAthletics

Students in grades Pre-K through grade 10 participate in Physical Education classes. These classes are designed to guide students towards a healthy lifestyle incorporating phys-ical development, healthy behavior and both recreational and sport involvement.

Starting in grade 5, students may participate in football, volleyball, basketball, softball, swimming, track and field, rugby and ten-nis. Our Athletics Programme provides opportunities for students to develop their potential in athletic activities while partici-pating in a competitive and fun environment. CIS is a member of NECIS, the Northwest European Council of International Schools, which organizes international tournaments where schools from Denmark, Sweden, Nor-way, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg meet to compete in a variety of sports.

We foster in students the life skills of collab-oration, competition, teamwork, leadership, and sportsmanship. Finally, the program seeks to educate students about the impor-tance of an active and healthy lifestyle.

Arts

In keeping with our philosophy, “to inspire creativity in each student in its broadest aspect and help to en-large the human spirit both aesthetically and morally”, the study of the fine and performing arts begins with our youngest students.

All primary school students take classes in drama, cho-rus, and visual art, which drive the “How We Express Ourselves” units at each grade level. Drama is focused on communication, creativity and cooperation. The main focus of art class is to foster creativity and self discovery in order to develop students’ability to relate to aesthetics and to beauty. Our primary students ex-plore music through singing and playing instruments, as well as through moving, composing and listening.

In the MYP, the music programme comprises three levels: the classroom music programme, the ensem-ble programme and private instrumental instruction. Students can participate in a variety of ensembles in-cluding the Middle School Choir, Senior School Choir, String Groups, Jazz Band, and Woodwind Ensemble. These ensembles present performances at winter and spring concerts, at school assemblies and in graduation ceremonies as well as around the Copenhagen area. In addition to drama class, students can participate in Drama Club and audition for roles in school perform-ances.

In the Diploma Programme, drama, visual arts and music are offered as course options. In all grades, we are active participants in International Schools Theatre Association festivals, which affords our students the opportunity to meet and work with students from oth-er international schools.

...to educate students about the importance of an active and healthy lifestyle...

A Truly International School

With families representing over 50 countries, and staff from over 20 countries, CIS lives its mission of educating children in a stimulating environment of cultural diversity. We acknowledge and celebrate and recognize our diversity in concrete ways such as participation in Model United Nations (MUN) activities, cultural festivals and high-lighting traditions and characteristics of countries around the world and in more subtle ways by examining different value systems, reli-gions, and cultural perspectives within our units of study.

A Truly International School

A community for the entire family

Copenhagen International School is a family communi-ty made up of many cultures. Most of the families who send their children to the school are employed by mul-ti-national corporations and embassies, and are on tem-porary assignment in Copenhagen. As a result, nearly a quarter of CIS students are new each year. CIS students and families are exceptionally practiced at welcoming new people into our classrooms and community – mak-ing the school a warm and welcoming environment for the entire family.

The school desires a close and collaborative relation-ship with parents in the education of our students. Par-ents are encouraged to become involved in the school community by participating in the Parent Teacher As-sociation (PTA). The PTA enhances the school com-munity through a broad range of activities including welcoming new families, organizing friend-raising and fundraising events, supporting the athletics program, performing arts, and field trips.

In addition to fostering connections between and among students, pupils and staff members, CIS utilizes the wider Copenhagen community to enhance teaching and learning. CIS students enjoy the benefit of living in a beautiful and safe city that offers ample opportunities to extend classroom learning.

The CIS family reaches around the world and through the years. Our alumni community includes everyone who was ever part of Copenhagen International School or Copenhagen International Junior School – students, families, faculty and staff and friends. Whether a fam-ily spends one or three years at CIS, they are part of our global family. The alumni embody the school’s living history.

CIS Gives Back

We have a long history of teaching students to care about others. The school sponsors three main service activities: the Charity Club, the Burmese Refugee Assistance Programme (BRAP) and Team Peru. Founded in 1985, and completely run by students in grades 11 and 12, the Charity Club supports a micro-credit project in Ghana, as well as the Nzongomani School in Swaziland and St. Margaret’s Hospice in the UK. Students involved in BRAP travel to Thailand to work with Burmese refugees, and Team Peru assists handicapped children in Peru.

At Copenhagen International School we are commit-ted to educating our students about climate change and sustainability, and to establish habits that promote clean living. The commitment is reflected in the mission statement, “to educate students to be respectful of, and knowledgeable about, their local and global environ-ment”. CIS is proactive in implementing improvements in our physical school environment relating to environ-mental issues as well as activating students and commu-nity members in environmentally conscious endeavors.
