Seventeen Marshall County 4-Hers got ready for the holidays at the 13 th Annual 4-H Holiday Workshop. During the workshop, the 4-Hers learned to make various craft and food items. Several were going to give their handmade items as gifts for friends and family on their Christmas gift list. The 4-Hers rotated through five work stations throughout the day. Lena D. Mallory, Marshall County 4-H Agent, and Jennifer Shafer, Marshall County NEP Assistant, led the Friendship Soup Mix station. At this station, the 4-Hers made a quick prep soup mix. They also learned how to measure ingredients and the importance of hand washing when preparing food. The holiday ornament and décor stations were led by Courtney Taylor, Marshall County 4-H Program Assistant, and 4-H volunteers: Candace Miller, Callie Bridges, and Alisha Boone. Our Holiday Workshop also had help from our teen leaders including Isaac Miller, and Kelsey Littrell. Lena, Courtney, and Jennifer also made sure all the participants had a nutritious morning snack, got supplies, coordinated the “behind the scenes” needs, and confirmed all of the volunteers. Lunch was also provided before the 4-Hers were dismissed to show off their newly crafted items to their family members. 2018 Written Communication Contest Enter your work in the 4-H Written Communication Contest this year and allow it to get the recognition it’s been missing! One group shopped for boys clothing items, another for boy toys, one group shopped for girls clothing items, and another for girl toys. HOLIDAY WORKSHOP 2017

Thirteen years of 4-Hers getting crafty was celebrated on December 19th! Seventeen Marshall County 4-Hers got ready for the holidays at the 13th Annual 4-H Holiday Workshop. GUIDELINES: 1.Youth must be 9-18 years old as of 1/1/18. Talk time limits: Talks 9-13 Years Old (Junior): 3-5 minutes; Talks 14-18 years old (Senior): 5-7 minutes. 2.Talks and demonstrations under or over time limit will be assessed a 3 Point penalty off average for under or over time. 3.Demonstration time limits are a minimum of 5 and maximum of 15 Minutes. 4.An entry in the wrong category will be given a blue, red, or white ribbon but will not be eligible for champion or alternate placing. 5.Judging Criteria - generally youth will be judged on personal appearance, presentation, audibility, suitability of age and topic, and organization of thoughts. 6.Costumes, special outfits, or props are not allowed in speeches. 7.To enter we need: name, complete mailing address, birth date (m/d/y), age as of January 1, 2018, category and title of presentation. CATEGORIES: Speeches (talks – no posters, props or costumes) are divided by age as of 1/1/18, as follows: 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, and 17-18. Demonstrations & illustrated talks have these categories to select from. More detailed list available from the Marshall County Extension Office: Animal Science (Large & Small) – NO LIVE ANIMALS Bread – Any recipe labeled as quick or yeast bread is allowed. Clothing /Sewing Crafts/Photography Foods – No bread recipes. General Health - Information on mental or physical fitness. Home Environment & Management – May include babysitting if not related to safety Horticulture - Including plants, gardening, etc. Performing Arts – Demonstrations related to theatre, dance, and musical instruments and performance. Presentation Software-only category that allows PowerPoint Safety - Includes all First Aid and CPR. Science & Natural Resources – Includes entomology, geology, weather, fish, soils, seeds, & fish/wildlife. Can include science-fair type experiments related to these topics. Science, Engineering, & Technology – Includes all topics related to the physical sciences, engineering, and technology. Shooting Sports – Mock-up or poster only. Team Demonstrations – Any topic (only 2 participants per team) Mock Job Interviews- Senior 4-Hers only (ages 14-15 or ages 16-18) DEMONSTRATION PRESENTERS RESPONSIBLE FOR THEIR OWN EQUIPMENT, PROPS, & POSTERS. ONLY AN EASEL AND TABLE WILL BE PROVIDED.

Marshall County will be going to West KY 4-H Camp Tuesday, June 12th - Friday, June 15th. This year’s theme is Outer Space. Go ahead and mark the dates in your calendar. We will be camping with Ballard, Fulton, Graves, Carlisle and Daviess Counties!

Camp is open to any Marshall County student/resident between the ages of 9-14 as of 6/12/18. Camp is $175 per camper and there are some scholarships available. Registration and scholarship applications are due by Wednesday, April 18th to the Extension Office with a $50 non-refundable first payment. Forms are available from the elementary and middle school offices.

Anyone who is 15 years of age or older as of 6/12/18 must apply to be either Counselor-In-Training (15 year olds), Teen Counselor (16 & 17 year olds), or Adult Counselor (18 & Over). CIT, and Teen applications are available from the Middle School and MCHS offices. Adult Counselor and all other applications are available at the Extension Office. Adult applications include reference checks and interviews. Adults will also have background checks done. Those applications are due by Wednesday, March 21st. WHAT’S LENA BEEN UP TO SINCE NOVEMBER-DECEMBER NEWSLETTER?

• School Enrichment Programs – 4-H Health Rocks! programs at North and South Marshall for the 6th – 8th grade health classes. To date, over 350 students have gone through this program. / Also co-coordinating implementation of Truth & Consequences: The Choice is Yours program to Marshall County’s 8th graders at North on January 30th and at South on February 28th.

• South and North Marshall Middle 4-H Clubs & Teen Club – Met with Middle School 4-H Clubs in November. The Middle School 4-H Clubs scheduled to meet January through May once a month during their Advisor-Advisee (AA) times. This is allowing for on average more participation and less competition with other after-school activities.

• Kentucky 4-H Summit – Processing Marshall County’s registration for Kentucky 4-H Summit in March. This is an annual conference for middle school 4-Hers. / Submitted workshop proposal for “Little Bits” workshop to be co-taught with Courtney.

WHAT’S COURTNEY BEEN UP TO SINCE NOVEMBER-DECEMBER

NEWSLETTER?

• After-School 4-H Clubs – Planning lessons for the upcoming school year/Making and handing out flyers and enrollment forms/November’s lesson was learning about pioneer life and making Pumpkin Pie in a bag/December’s lesson was our Mad Hatter Holiday Party where we learned about Manners and made our own hats.

• Programs– Helped with the December Service Project Shopping Spree/ Planned and implemented Holiday Workshop

• Planning – Planning after school lessons/Put together newsletter/Put together officer packets for the 4-H clubs/Getting together 4-H camp information for schools

• 4-H Holiday Shopping Project – Facilitated the coordination of 4-H Holiday Shopping Project for the Middle Schools and Teen Club 4-H members on November 28th. The 4-Hers donated funds and shopped for a 1st grade boy and his Kindergarten aged sister. Both clothes and toys were purchased to help the family provide Christmas presents for their children.

• County 4-H Council & Kentucky Volunteer Forum – Preparing for January County 4-H Council meeting. / Processed registrations for five Marshall County 4-H volunteers and two agents to attend the Volunteer Forum in early February in Lexington.

• Kentucky State 4-H Agent Advisory Group – Serve as one of the District 7 Representatives. / In this role, co-facilitated the Kentucky 4-H Strategic Plan session at the November District 7 4-H Staff meeting and will be participating in the state planning process in February.

• Kentucky 4-H In-Services – Participated in the 4-H In-Service Series in Lexington in early December as well as Camp In-Service on January 11th in Jabez, Kentucky.

• Kentucky 4-H Workforce Prep Curriculum Committee – Serve as a committee member plus wrote Teamwork chapter. Made final edits for the on-line curriculum in early December.

• Other CES Responsibilities/Activities – Extension District Board responsibilities including financial reports, monthly bill approval/payments, and District Board Treasurer transition process. Prepared and did follow-up as needed for the January District Board meeting. / Prepare meeting notices and correspondence for most of the Marshall County 4-H Project Clubs and Helping Hands 4-H Club on a regular basis.

• NAE4-HA 2016-17 Immediate Past President Responsibilities (Term Ended in Mid-November) – Board Representative for the Organizational Stewardship Committee to the NAE4-HA Board of Trustees. Completed updates to OSC and President’s Council Handbooks; completed as needed OSC and other responsibilities during the 2017 NAE4-HA Annual Conference held in Indianapolis, IN.

• National JCEP Board – Finished out term as JCEP Treasurer on 12/31/17 and all of the responsibilities that come with this role including approval of expense vouchers for payment, development of 2018 budget, and working with

If Marshall County Schools are closed, dismissed early, or cancel after-school activities due to bad weather, then ALL Marshall County 4-H meetings and activities scheduled for the same day are automatically cancelled. Reschedules will only happen if the Club Leader is available at another date/time.
