Technological convergence
Within the music industry
Benefits of technological and digital convergence for audiences.
• Audience’s no longer need to have multiple products to do different things. They can have a phone that, does the usual of what is expected (make calls) but can also store music, take pictures and browse the web or social medias. Audience’s now have a product that allows many functions, meaning with one product they can have, hundreds of songs, a high quality camera and messaging services.
• Due to new products now allowing people to create their own work there is less of a need have a record label. People can launch themselves online.
• Lots of information is available about products so it can be immediately researched if you’re interested.
• Products are easily portable, so you can have various digital copies of songs with you were ever you go.
• A niche market has been created for selling pre owned CD’s.
Limitations of technological and digital convergence for audiences.
• No second hand market for digital media- can’t be sold on like CD’s.
• Some people like digital copies- but its likely that at some point they will no longer be created.
• Your music collection has no value- it gets destroyed once you die and can’t be passed on.

• Institutions can reduce advertising costs as people will do their own advertising through things like fan pages and covers.
• Don’t have to sell as many physical products as people want online copies, which is more cost effective for institutions.
