Development Programme

(Research)Research Office

2020

-21

Our approach to research development at YSJ.YSJ is a small university with big aspirations for research. Our approach to supporting the development of research recognises that the development needs of staff vary depending on the stage of career and cognate area, while also being aware that a key set of personal and professional skills underpins all successful research careers.

The programme is coordinated by the Research Office and delivered by YSJ School Research Leads who are responsible for strategically guiding research within each school, as well as our professoriate who are our most senior and experienced researchers. It is an exciting programme and offers an array of development opportunities to our academic community.

Professor Andy HillActing PVC Research

Our aimTo ensure that we provide professional development opportunities to equip all researchers with the skills they need to conduct impactful research recognised for its quality, rigour and integrity. We achieve this by drawing on the strengths of researchers from across the university and inviting high-quality external contributors to share their expertise with us. All of the CPD activities outlined in this booklet align with the Vitae Researcher Development Framework (RDF), which aims to guide the development of world-leading researchers.

Themes for 2020 – Open and accessible research – Core research skills – New research techniques

Range of activities – Short sessions and workshops – School specific seminar series – YSJU staff research conference

Key Information

Research Collaboration Supervisor ResourcesSchool Research SeminarsEach school provides regular opportunities to attend research seminars which include expert visiting speakers, as well as research presentations from staff, GTAs and PGRs. School research seminars provide a perfect setting for collaborating, sharing and disseminating current research, and engaging in academic discussions.

Research Collaboration Corner Researchers are encouraged to actively engage in our online Research Collaboration Corner. This virtual space aims to cultivate inter and multidisciplinary research collaborations and strengthen partnerships across the University. It offers a place to meet and share ideas with researchers from other disciplines, find collaborators and receive peer input to potential research projects.

YSJU Staff Research ConferenceEvery year colleagues across the university come together to share their research. It is particularly exciting to hear about projects that have been supported by YSJ are developing and is a great way of identifying opportunities for interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary research.

Postgraduate Research Supervisor Forum (PRSF)Our Postgraduate Research Supervisor Forums (PRSF) occur regularly throughout each academic year facilitating opportunities for research supervisors to share experience and good practice. These sessions are designed to address current topics relating to research supervision, explore needs identified by the Research Degree Sub-Committee (RDSC), and PGR feedback.

Supervisor TrainingFor those new to supervision at York St John University, our training ensures you meet the University’s eligibility criteria prior to undertaking an online training course which covers the PGR lifecycle and opportunities for continuous professional development. After completing your training, you will be added to our RDSC supervisor register.

UKCGE Supervisory FrameworkSupplementing our own support for research supervision, the University utilises the UK Council for Graduate Education (UKCGE) Good Supervisory Practice Framework. Underpinned by an extensive body of academic research, the framework sets out expectations for supervisors at a national level.
