Stop dreading those difficult conversations, and learn

how to have successful conversations when it really

matters. We’ve all had a difficult conversation that

went really well, and we’ve all had conversations that

seemed to go completely off the rails. This course

begins by exploring two of the most common factors

in miscommunication, then delving into concepts of

motivation, intention, and perception. A TKI

assessment helps participants understand their

preferred conflict handling style, learn all five conflict-

handling styles and identify when to use them. Then

participants develop the listening, assertiveness,

questioning, paraphrasing and feedback skills they

Management Skills for Supervisors Part 3: Self-Management and LeadershipSkill DevelopmentCESS 153 26 hours $549

What distinguishes a great leader from an average

leader? Effective leaders are able to manage their

stress, remain optimistic even in difficult times, manage

their time effectively, and are able to leverage their

strengths. They have a vision that they can

communicate to their followers, and are able to lead

their teams through change and uncertainty. In this

module participants complete a number of inventories

to explore their stress tolerance (Holmes-Rahe),

leadership style (LEAD), personality profile (DiSC) and

strengths (StrengthsFinder). We explore the concept

of Appreciative Enquiry to extend the concept of

strengths-based leadership to the organization, and its

use in change leadership. Participants will use Bridges’

4 P’s to communicate change, and Kotter’s 8 steps to

lead change, to develop a plan to communicate

Post-Diploma in Human Resources Managementstudent testimonial:

I attended the Continuing Education Human

Resources Post-Diploma Program starting Fall 2011.

The curriculum was very relevant and current to the

field of HR. The instructors were so knowledgeable of

HR practices and had an abundance of experience to

share and draw real life examples from. As an adult

learner, I was able to easily relate to the material. I was

fortunate to land an HR job during the ninth month of

the program. For three months the balance of work

and school was a challenge, however I could literally

apply what I learned in class to my job the very next

day. It was amazing!

I since moved into operations management and I owe

this promotion in part to what I learned in the CNC HR

Post-Diploma Program. Regardless of your position in

the business world, Human Resources is an asset to

specialize in and add to any portfolio. ~ Nikki

understanding yourself from the inside out and creating

Certificate in CommunityMental Health

This program is offered in partnership with Douglas

College and will provide you with a college credential in

Mental Health. Northern Health has identified

Psychosocial Rehabilitation as a foundation of mental

health care for the north. It is a holistic approach that

places the person, not the illness, at the centre of all

interventions.

The Certificate in Community Mental Health consists of

two courses which can be taken individually (providing

the prerequisites are met): Introduction to Mental

Health and Psychosocial Rehabilitation. For more

information on each of the courses, please visit our

website at www.cnc.bc.ca/ce

Individuals with limited or no experience in mental

health should take Introduction to Mental Health first.

Healthcare workers with current experience and

knowledge in mental health disorders, the mental

health system, best practices in mental health and

person-centred practice may be able to challenge the

Introduction to Mental Health component and move

directly to Psychosocial Rehabilitation. Please contact

us for more information.

This is what Susan had to say about herexperience…

The 'light bulb' effect took place for me within the firstfew weeks of taking the Introduction to Mental Health. Ihad been wanting to take the course for many years anddecided that now was the year for me to learn, exploreand embrace the information. What I was not preparedfor was the level of emotions that would rise to the

surface, for many years I was really good at ignoring orpushing it all down, hiding it away for nobody to see. Ihave realized that we all have a personal journeywhatever that looks like and the importance ofacknowledging the growth that comes with acceptanceand education. The information that I have learned inthis course is REAL, it has been difficult hearing peoplespersonal stories, yet on the same hand I haveappreciated the honesty, strength and HOPE thatpeople have brought alive as they shared how living witha mental health illness has impacted their life. I amlooking forward to putting into practice the information Ihave learned, the reality of peoples experiences and arenewed acceptance of myself and people around me.
