FAMELAB THAILAND 2016

British Council’s science work in Thailand focuses on two prority areas: firstly, working with Thai and UK partners to support international collaboration between researchers and lead to long-term collaboration and breakthroughs in scientific knowledge, and secondly, helping to develop the next generation of scientists by inspiring students to study in STEM programmes in schools and by helping to popularise science and science communication. Famelab does both!

FameLab is a competition that gives participants just three minutes to explain a scientific concept in a clear, concise and accurate way in front of a jury and live audience. Participants are allowed to sing, dance and use props, but not allowed to use electronic presentations. It’s all about bringing science to life to inspire and entertain!

FameLab was launched in Thailand in 2016 in partnership with the Ministry of Science and Technology, the National Science Technology and Innovation Policy Office (STI), the National Science and Technology Development Agency (NSTDA), and True Corporation. FameLab Thailand is also sponsored by Imperial College London, the University of East Anglia and the University of Lincoln.

In Thailand, the competition is open to:

• Lecturers in science, mathematics or engineering subjects, including specialist science teachers with a science degree. • Researchers who use existing research or meta-studies. • People who work on applying science, technology or mathematics to real world problems.

• Undergraduate/postgraduate students of science, mathematics or engineering. • People who apply science, mathematics or engineering in the armed forces or government bodies. • People who apply science, engineering or mathematics in industry or business.

FameLab’s promotional campaign has built on awareness and positive perceptions in the first year by creating sharable content connected to science communication, highlighting opportunities and benefits for participants through the following activities:

• Collateral advertising in brochures, postcards, banners and newsletters • Online and social media promotion • Video presentations for Famelab Thailand • FameLab press launch

The ability to vote by ‘likes’ on Facebook has also been added to the competition to raise awareness among young people via British Council Thailand’s Facebook page.

Each presentation has been also recorded and uploaded to the British Council Thailand YouTube channel https://www.youtube.com/user/britishcouncil, and made available for future applicants. Already, a number of videos has been shared and seen by the public.

Dr. Khaow Tonsomboon“I Remember Nothing”

Winner and People’s Choice Award Winner

Dr. Khaow Tonsomboon received a Ministry of Science and Technology scholarship to study from grade 12 to PhD level in the UK. After obtaining a PhD degree in Biomedical Engineering from Cambridge University, He returned to Thailand and worked as a researcher at the National Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (BIOTEC). He is working on Biosensors, Biomaterials and Tissue Engineering. He always volunteer to give inspirational talks to young children and run STEM activities at science camps because he wants to inspire them to love science, become scientists, and help drive our country forward. He also wants to change public perceptions that science is “difficult” and “distant” to “fun” and “relatable” for everyone. He wants to put a spotlight on science in Thailand.

Dr Tawin IemprideeBats-Natural Born Superheroes

1st Runner-up

Since childhood, Dr. Tawin Iempridee always been fascinated by biology. This fascination has continued to grow into aspirations of becoming a professional researcher in Biomedical Sciences. In 2014, He received a Doctorate of Philosophy in Cancer Biology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, USA. After completing his doctoral studies abroad, He returned to serve his country by assuming a position of researcher at the National Nanotechnology Center (NANOTEC). With NANOTEC, He has been working collaboratively with elite researchers with a focus on understanding how cancer works and finding cancer biomarkers from patients’ blood, with the ultimate goal of improving cancer diagnosis and therapy. Besides his goal to conduct biomedical research, He has been looking forward to the opportunity of mentoring and guiding young students in the field as a further means of encouraging scientific development in Thailand.

When she finished high school, she received a scholarship from the Royal Thai Government to continue her studies in the United States and completed her PhD in Biochemistry from Brown University in 2007. Since then, she has been working as a researcher at BIOTEC. Although most of her research efforts focus on the reproductive system of the black tiger shrimp, she is also part of the team that looks for biological activities in bacteria and fungi found in Thailand, for their potential use in medicine and agriculture. She combines her passions for art, language and science by working as a columnist, explaining scientific concepts to children, creating the logo for BIOTEC for its 30th anniversary, and now participating in FameLab. She is married to a university lecturer, and together they have a 2-year-old son whom they plan to inspire to love science as much as they do.

Ms. Supatchaya TechachoochertForest Bathing: The Secret of a Healthy Life

Supatchaya ‘Ann’ Techachoochert is a nature lover, whose appreciation of nature lead her to the field of Conservation Biology. She graduated with a First Class degree with Honours and received a Bachelor’s degree of Science in 2012. Currently, she is continuing her biological studies at PhD level at Mahidol University. Moreover, she was awarded a fellowship by the US Department of State to study on a short course on Environmental Science at the University of Montana. She is a young activist who has been working to conserve the environment more than ten years, working as a project coordinator on the Mangrove Rehabilitation Project for WWF Thailand, leading numbers of environmental camps and co-founding BaiMai environmental enterprise. In 2008, she received a Royal Outstanding Award for Natural Resource and the Environment. The following year she was Thailand’s youth representative at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Dr. Nirawat Thammajak is now a scientist at the Synchrotron Light Research Institute, leading a project called “SLRI-GeM Consortium”, Synchrotron Technology for Gemology and Mineralogy Applications. In 2016, he received the Very Good Invention Award in Physical Sciences from the National Research Council of Thailand.

Dr. Dissaya PornpattananangkulLet’s Fight Against Cancer Using Nanomedicine with Me!

As the Valedictorian of the Science Faculty in undergraduate studies at Chulalongkorn Unversity, Dr. Pornpattananangkul graduated with 3.99 GPA, a gold medal, and the two highest GPA awards among a class of 700 undergraduates. This led her to become one of two scholars in Thailand granted the Queen Sirikit Scholarship from Her Majesty the Queen in 2007. Afterwards, Dr. Pornpattananangkul pursued her doctorate study in the field of Bioengineering at the University of California in San Diego, USA where she was a leading scientist performing research of drug delivery to treat bacterial infection. During this time, she led a team to produce nine peer-reviewed publications, two poster presentations and one international patent. Her research was featured in many world-renowned journals and magazines including ACS Nano, JACS, Science Daily and the Times of India. After her return to Thailand, she served as an adjunct professor at the International School of Engineering at Chulalongkorn University, and she is now performing studies of nanomedicines in collaboration with Siriraj hospital.
