About FameLab FameLab aims to discover charismatic, up-and-coming scientists who inspire people to see the world from a new perspective… in just three minutes! Since its birth at the Cheltenham Science Festival in 2005, FameLab has grown into arguably the world’s leading science communication competition. A partnership with the British Council since 2007 has seen the competition go global with more than 5000 young scientists and engineers participating in over 25 different countries.

Communicating science accessibly and attractively is an ever-growing priority for researchers worldwide. FameLab helps young scientists acquire valuable skills to communicate their work to non-scientific audiences. By doing so, researchers not only challenge common stereotypes of scientists, but also help to justify public funding for their research.

FameLab Netherlands 2014 FameLab Netherlands is organised by the British Council in partnership with our national partners KNAW, NTR and Museum Boerhaave Leiden. The regional heats are organised by our regional partners University of Groningen / Science LinX, Leiden University, Radboud University / Radboud UMC and Wageningen University and Research Centre. Dutch public broadcaster NTR is media partner for FameLab Netherlands and will present the Audience Award during the Final. In addition, NTR will support the Masterclass with media/camera training and will film the FameLab Heats and FameLab Netherlands Final. Heats During four heat around the Netherlands, young scientists will have the opportunity to share their passion for science. The winners of the regional heats will go through to the Masterclass.

Masterclass The FameLab Masterclass in Media and Science Communication will be hosted by the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW). The winners of the Heats will all take part in the two day Masterclass from 12-13 March 2015. After the Masterclass, 10 Finalists will be selected to compete in the National Final.

National Final The National Final will be held at Museum Boerhaave in Leiden on Tuesday 21 April 2015 in the evening. The 10 selected Finalists will compete against one another to see who will be crowned winner of FameLab Netherlands 2015!

To reserve a seat at the National Final on 21 April or to get involved in FameLab Netherlands, please send an email to Manon de Ruijter on [email protected].

International Final The overall winner will travel to the UK to compete in the FameLab International Final which will be held in Cheltenham in June 2015. The International Final is co-produced by Cheltenham Science Festivals and the British Council.

Professor Maria Forlenza Assistant Professor at the Institute of Animal Sciences, Cell Biology and Immunology Group Wageningen University

Maria was initially appointed on a Research Training Network (PARITY) and subsequently on an integrated project, IMAQUANIM, both financed by the European Community. During her PhD she studied innate and adaptive immune reactions in carp against two natural infections caused by the parasite Trypanoplasma borreli and by the Spring Viraemia of Carp Virus (SVCV). In October 2009 she defended her PhD (cum laude) and in January 2011 she has been awarded a Veni grant by the Dutch Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO). Maria is also member of the Wageningen Young Academy.

Chair of the Jury

Professor Dr Ir Johan van Arendonk Professor Animal Breeding and Genetics, Dean of Sciences of the Wageningen Graduate Schools and Head of the Animal Breeding and Genetics Chair Group Wageningen University

Johan van Arendonk studied Animal Sciences and did his PhD at Wageningen University, both were completed with the ‘cum laude’ honour award. He is a member of the steering group of the European Farm Animal Breeding and Reproduction Technology Platform, member of the editorial board of ‘Frontiers in Genetics’ and co-chair of the International Milk Genomics consortium. For his contribution to the development and application of biotechnology in livestock improvement Van Arendonk received various awards, like the “Justus-von-Liebig-Preis 2006” at the University of Kiel (Germany) and the “Doctor Honoris Causa” degree at the University of Life Sciences in Poznan (Poland) in September 2011.

Dirk van Delft studied Physics at Leiden University. From 1992-2006 he was Senior Science Editor at NRC Handelsblad. Since 2006 he is Director of Museum Boerhaave, the Dutch National Museum for the History of Science and Medicine. He holds an one day a week position as Special Professor in the Material Heritage of the Sciences, located at Leiden Observatory. His PhD-work involved a biography of Heike Kamerlingh Onnes (Leiden University, 2005). His research is focussed on the Leiden cryogenic laboratory 1880-1960, Paul Ehrenfest, and the Leiden school of instrument makers. In 2005 he was awarded the NWO Eureka Award for Science Communication.

Dr Cathelijne Stoof Assistant professor at the Soil Geography and Landscape Group Wageningen University

Cathelijne Stoof studied Soil Science and Hydrology (cum laude) and did her PhD at the Land Degradation and Development Group at Wageningen University. Her research is on the impacts of human activity and natural hazards on soil and water resources, and focused on forest fires in her PhD research. This generated a lot of media attention in newspapers, TV and radio. Cathelijne is experienced in telling her research story in different ways each time under full control.

After her graduation she did a 3-year postdoc at Cornell University in the USA. She recently came back to Wageningen. As an appreciated specialist in forest fires she is still often asked by media to give her comments.
