Respect for the inherent worth and dignity of every person; Each and every person is important.

Justice, equity and compassion in human relations; Treat people fairly and kindly.

Acceptance of one another and encouragement to spiritual growth; Our church is a place where everyone is accepted,

and we all learn and grow together.

A free and responsible search for truth and meaning; Every person should be free to search for what is right and true in life.

The right of conscience and the use of the democratic process; People should have a say in decisions that affect them.

The goal of world community with peace, liberty and justice for all; We should work for a peaceful, free and fair world.

Respect for the interdependent web of all existence; We should care for our planet earth, because we are all a part of the earth.

As UUs reflect on racism and our role in upholding white supremacy, an 8th principle has been proposed: journeying toward spiritual wholeness by working to build a

diverse multicultural Beloved Community by our actions that accountably dismantle racism and other oppressions in ourselves and our institutions.

We believe that life-long learning and growth is an important, intentional process. Indeed our principles encourage us to an ongoing search for our truths and to constantly be reflecting and making meaning of our lives. Therefore, Religious Education is for all of us. Together we learn how to live our lives as Unitarian

Universalists; how to make meaning of the situations we find ourselves in; and how to ground our actions in our principles.

We are excited to offer these programs for all ages designed for learning and growth as we explore our truths together.

A Chosen Faith

(The informative series previously known as Path to Membership*) 1st, 2nd, 3rd Sundays * 11:45—1:00pm in the Library

From the Greek word “hairesis”, meaning, “choice”, we get the word heresy. And indeed, Unitarian Universalism (UU) is a faith which originated from ancient heresies and is still the faith of modern heretics, people who have decided to choose for themselves the faith that speaks to their own lives and values. If you are one of these people, we invite you to learn more about UUism and UUFNN.

ACF #1 The astonishing history of the UUA & UUFNN

How did the UUA wind up on J. Edgar Hoover’s hit list? and

other amazing stories.

ACF #2 What do you believe? and how does that fit with UU’s creedless faith?

ACF #3 Who’s in charge here? and how do we work to fulfill our mission to grow in love, faith, justice and joy?

Each session is held on the corresponding Sunday of the month (i.e. #1 on the first Sunday), 11:45am - 1pm in Emerson Room. We suggest attending at least #1 or #2 (if not both, in either order) prior to #3 if you are a newcomer. Both newcomers who are curious about Unitarian

Universalism and UUFNN and current members who want to deepen their knowledge and

commitment will find these sessions informative and inspiring. Newcomers who complete all three sessions of this series are invited, should they wish, to

become members of UUFNN at a special ACF #4.

Because the series known as Path to Membership is really just as informative for long time

members as it is for newcomers, it has a new name and a new mission: to educate everyone at

UUFNN about their chosen faith.

Children’s Classes (Pre-K-6th graders) — Most Sundays 10:30-11:45am,

Starr King and Maynard

Children attend the beginning of each service and then are “sung to class” after Time for All

Ages. Our children’s classes use hands-on, artistic, and thoughtful activities to examine faith,

religion, UU principles, and meaning and purpose in our lives. Our children are introduced to

the importance of spiritual practices, community building and service and social justice.

Navigators —- 1st and 3rd Sundays * 2:00pm-4:00pm

Navigators USA is an all gender, secular scouting movement that welcomes all families. Given our similar principles and goals, UUFNN partners with Navigators to offer opportunities for UUFNN families to participate!

Currently children’s ages in the group range from 4-10, but all are welcome. Navigators

engages in outdoor activities, community service, creative projects, and skill building to earn badges and have fun! More information about Navigators can be found here: https://navigatorsusa.org/

Most gatherings will be held in the Starr King room at UUFNN. However, if there are plans for a hike or an outdoor activity the meeting spot might be at a trailhead or site. Check in with the site leader before attending: [email protected]

Forum

2nd, 4th, 5th Sundays * 9 - 10am in the Starr King room

Our Sunday Forum presents programs of interest to the congregation providing intellectual stimulation and spiritual inspiration related to our 7 UU Principles and sources of the living

traditions we share.

Each Forum features speakers and panelists chosen from the congregation and the community on the basis of expertise in an area bearing on one or more of the seven UU Principles or illuminating one of the sources of our living tradition. Topics typically consist of issues and information related to social justice, religious freedom, spiritual growth, democratic values, exploration of other religious faiths, UU history, the right of conscience, the free and

responsible search for truth and meaning, and international relations as they bear on world peace and amity between nations.

Lunchbox RE

2nd Sundays * noon-1:00pm

Join us for an hour to dig deeper into the themes we are exploring in any particular month. Lunchbox RE will be a facilitated conversation blending topics we have been exploring as a community (within UUFNN and outside of our walls). Bring a lunch (in a lunchbox or not!).

Women’s* Retreat and Mini Retreat Mini Retreat: October 27 * 10am - 1pm in the Sanctuary

Annual Retreat: May 17-18 (More soon.)

Our Annual Women’s retreat is a weekend of fun, social time, community building and spiritual nourishment. Held at the end of the church-year, it always feels like a LONG time until we are able to gather again, so this year, we introduce the “Mini” – a 3 hour retreat held at the begin-ning of the church year. Join either or both!

*By “women” we mean anyone who identifies as a woman in a way that is significant to them, be they trans, non-binary, genderfluid, and gender non-conforming individuals. All are

UUFNN Younger Adults group is a social and service group, comprised of "younger adults" (roughly ages ranging 20's to 50's), who seek to be inclusive, and an integral part of the Fellowship

community. Our hope is to provide events that increase our connection to each other, the Fellowship, our community, and to provide another avenue for our demographic to be engaged. Some events are planned far in advance, others are "pop up" dinners and hikes posted a couple of days ahead on our Google group email list.

Saturday 9/22 - Social Science: CSI at the Discovery Museum. UUFNN YA member Dr. Laura Knight will be a featured speaker! More info at nvdm.org.

Sunday 9/23 - Community BBQ to Kick-Off the Year at UUFNN - a Fellowship-wide event! We will have good food, cold drinks, and ice cream machines. Younger Adults provide the meat/main dishes and ice creams for dessert; the rest of the congregation provides side items and breads.

10/4 - 11/29, 6PM every other Thursday at UUFNN - Fall Podcast Discussion Group - open, drop-in discussions on thought-provoking podcasts you can listen to before we meet. Podcast links will be sent out 1-2 weeks

before each meeting. Dates are 10/4, 10/18, 11/1, 11/15, and 11/29. Snacks by volunteers from group, and childcare is provided.

Sat. 11/3 - Knight-Crafter/YA Halloween party in Verdi - costumes are required and your ticket for entry: Pocket food items (granola bars, nut packets, individually wrapped snacks) for Eddy House!

Wanted: Younger Adults willing to host pop-up Sunday

potluck dinners, announced up to a week in advance (or just a day or two). Check in with [email protected] if you like regarding a date, or just put it on the Google calendar and

announce it on our email list.

Upcoming service projects: a family dinner for Eddy House later this year; group cooking party to help Verdi Posse feed those in need; group volunteering oppor-tunities at the Food Bank.

Early planning for a Younger Adults retreat is underway for late summer 2019.

Feedback and other ideas welcome! Contact [email protected] to connect with us! Or, catch Samaria Cate, Laura Knight, or Evan Waldt on a Sunday at UUFNN!

EU Insiuc

The Leadership Development Committee (LDC) in coordination with UUFNN's Adult Religious Education department is pleased to be offering education and training opportunities through UUA's UU Institute. These courses are low cost ($15 to $30, with scholarships available) webinar-based courses, some with live instructors and others self-paced. LDC members and UUFNN staff will also be coaching class participants and hosting small group discussions around each class. There will be a sign-up table in the Gathering room on Sundays after service throughout September and into the first week of October, or you can contact Kristin Famula or Chris Piekarz to register for a class. Class offerings are below: The History and Theology of Covenant, UU Style ($15, on-demand)

This course represents a deep dive into one of the hottest conversational topics in today’s Unitarian Universalist world: our commitment to covenant.

Unitarian Universalist History ($15, on-demand) The course covers a basic outline of Unitarian, Universalist, and Unitarian Universalist history, with an emphasis on how our history allows us to be more effective in fulfilling our religious mission.

Resources of Love: Faithful & Successful Congregational Stewardship ($15, on-demand) This course is an in-depth exploration of successful Congregational Stewardship from myriad voices, including current and former Parish Ministers, and UUA Stewardship and Development Staff.

From Visitor to a Full Spectrum of Member Engagement ($15, on-demand) Looking beyond the goal of just increasing membership, this course discusses fostering a culture of connection, including membership as ministry, welcoming the stranger - greeting as a spiritual practice, and developing a pathway from visitor to community member.

Centered Leadership, Part 1 ($30, instructor led) The first of four Leadership Development courses, this course is designed for people

considering leadership, who are beginning to lead, or who have leadership experience

in contexts other than Unitarian Universalist faith communities.

Please visit www.uuinstitute.org for further course details but hold off on enrolling for a class

so we can coordinate a common start date for all interested class participants. Note that coaching and small group discussions will not be scheduled if there are less than five participants in a class. However, you are welcome to take these or any other UU Institute classes on your own if desired. For more information or to register outside of Sunday service, contact Kristin Famula, [email protected] or Chris Piekarz, [email protected].

Mindful Activism – Guided by Buddhist Principles of Wisdom & Compassion 1st and 3rd Thursdays * 6:00pm-8:00pm * Starr King room (begins

October 4th)

A different kind of mindfulness group; a different kind of activism group. How so? This group is not about what we do, but

about how we do it. There are many wonderful groups already working with new petitions and marches and voter registration and fundraising and other political actions, and we certainly

support and are involved in many of these actions. But this group is about how we hold our sense of inner equanimity and compassion in this "sea of troubles."

We are all concerned about the rampant aggression, hatred, and greed currently swelling in our world and driving policy in this country. We believe we can only make a difference in this mess if we work honestly with our own blame and anger. Can we meet the horrors around us with equanimity and compassion? Not an easy undertaking. This group is about supporting one

another as we strive to do just that.

This Mindful Activism group is inspired by the Buddhist Peace Fellowship’s mission statement, "Beginning with ourselves, aware of the interconnectedness of all things, mindfulness cultivates

conditions for peace, social justice, and environmental sustainability within ourselves and our

community."

This group is for new and experienced activists, from any and all traditions, including secular humanism, who are wanting to approach their activism from a place of deep compassion and

internal peace. Knowing that this mindful activism depends on being deeply honest with our-selves and one another, we believe that having a place to explore the internal and external challenges as they really are, will be a great help. To this end, in our bi-monthly meetings we

will include a period of mindfulness meditation and a presentation relevant to the challenges of being a mindful activist. We will have plenty of time for lively discussion. For more

information, contact [email protected]. Contact Kristin Famula, [email protected], or Chris Piekarz, [email protected], for information or to register outside of Sunday service.
