Sadie Massey Awards for Young Readers at The Portico LibraryThe Portico Sadie Massey Awards for Young Readers aims to encourage a life-long love of reading and also to celebrate the North West of England through its talented young writers. As part of our Literacy Week in March, Year 10 students took part in review writing workshops in the LRC and were invited to submit entries for this prestigious competition. The quality of work was very high but we shortlisted the entries down to the top fifteen and these were sent off to The Portico Library in Manchester.

We were delighted to receive an email in April announcing that four of our students had been selected as winners! Oliver Scrafton, Molly Cunningham, Samantha Daniel and Josh

Wheeler were all awarded prizes, with Josh receiving special commendation from the judges for his review of ‘The Recruit’ by Robert Muchamore.

Last week, I accompanied the winners along with their friends and family to The Portico for an awards presentation evening. Founded in 1806, this hidden gem provided a very special setting in which to celebrate the achievements of our talented students. Paul Morris, a local writer, delivered a speech in

which he described his delight in reading and judging the competition entries. He will also visit Wilmslow High School later this month to work with our winners’ English classes as part of their prize. - Miss Baldwin, LRC Manager

NEWS

Hillsborough documentary produced by former Wilmslow High pupil premieres on BBC2 this weekend A documentary about Britain’s worst sporting disaster, which was banned from being screened whilst the Coroner’s inquests took place, will premiere on UK television this weekend.

Produced and directed by former student of Wilmslow High School Daniel Gordon, ‘Hillsborough’ provides a moving account of the tragedy in which 96 men, women and children were killed, hundreds injured and thousands left traumatised.

Daniel, 43, now lives in Sheffield and attended Wilmslow High School from 1984 to 1991 where he says his first English teacher Mr Fredericks was a true inspiration to him. He has been making documentaries for 20 years and the updated version of ‘Hillsborough’, which will be broadcast on BBC2 on Sunday 8th May, is his most recent work.

School Games Makers On Thursday 28 April school Games Makers (left) supported Mrs Harris in the running and organisation of the Cheshire and Warrington Level 3 Winter Games hosted at Macclesfield Rugby Club.

There were 3 events; U13 girls rugby, Year 5 and 6 tag rugby and Year 3 and 4 football. It was a very wet afternoon, but we all had a great time in helping over 200 players enjoy their sport. The school Games Maker

Programme is a good way to develop confidence, self-esteem, public speaking, organisational skills, umpiring skills and much more!

If you want to find out more about the programme join us on Monday break times in room 60, or speak to Mrs. Harris

Deaf Awareness WeekThis week was National Deaf Awareness Week and our students helped improve understanding by producing a PowerPoint and video to be shown during tutor time. They also chose Deaf Awareness posters together and displayed them around school.

It was inspiring to see the students take ownership of the week and working so closely together.

We are ending the week with an ‘invitation only’ rounders match between staff and students from Lindow Primary HI Resource, Wilmslow High School HI Resource and the Skills Development Group. May the best team win!

Maths Camp 2016Bright and early on Thursday 28th April 40 mathematicians set off on the critically acclaimed ‘Maths Camp’ to the Tyn-y-felin Residential Centre in Anglesey.

The timetable gave the students targeted sessions on particular topics from the Core 3, Core 4 and Mechanics 1 modules, designed to build their exam competence in preparation for their forthcoming A2 examinations.

The working day ended at 6pm and the students rested their brains over a spicy curry evening meal before the quiz night. Mrs Cannon and Mrs Welch delivered a nail biting quiz where the students battled it out in several rounds of IQ testing questions. Including, name the Wilmslow High school staff, a ‘taste’ round and not forgetting the famous ‘Pointless round’. After 10 rounds,

and several snacks, later ‘You’re a Qwizard Harry’ narrowly beat the teacher team ‘Mathsy McMathsFace’ to take first place.

The next day, after a full English breakfast the hard work continued. Nine hours of intensive study enabled the students to develop confidence and competence in tackling the most difficult elements of the A2 course. The students worked steadily throughout the day taking short breaks for food and to get some fresh air or play a bit of football.

Despite snow the previous day, the weather was lovely, so in the evening we walked to the stunning sandy beach of Silver Bay, foraging dry firewood on the way. Mr Haigh lit a bonfire perfect for toasting marshmallows and making Smores. The game of choice this year was

Danish Long Ball and the beach was filled with cheers and laughter as we attempted to make it to base without being hit by the ball!

We awoke on the Saturday ready for the final push in the quest to further our mathematical skills. Students worked steadily until mid afternoon and then, after 18 hours of maths, with frazzled brains and notepads full of solutions we boarded the coach and set off for home.

I can honestly say that it was a pleasure and a privilege to spend time working with a group of such committed and hardworking students and I wish them all the best of luck for the future. Mrs Cannon

End of Year Examinations

• Students in Year 7 to Year 9 will be taking examinations in the week after the half term break (week commencing 6th June).

The timetable for the examinations will be based on students’ normal timetables with some adjustments to allow for longer examinations in certain subjects. Most examinations will take place in classrooms but some will be in larger venues such as the hall or gym.

The examination timetable will be published to students and in High Notes before half term. As always, students must be properly equipped and should not expect to be lent basic equipment. Students should also ensure that, as usual, they have a good reading book with them as there will be additional opportunities for private reading during this week.

Students should be revising now in preparation for these examinations.

• Students in Year 10 will be taking examinations in weeks commencing 20th and 27th June, with some practical examinations taking place during week commencing 13th June.

These examinations will take place mainly in formal examination venues such as the assembly hall. Students will receive a timetable shortly beforehand and should not wait to receive their timetable before commencing revision.

FootballIt’s been a busy end to the season for the senior boys’ football team, with two cup finals either side of the bank holiday weekend.

Last Thursday, the team played away against King’s Chester in the final of the Cheshire Cup. It was a tense affair between two strong sides. At the end of normal time, with the score tied at 0-0, the game burst into life in extra time. Goals from Miguel Vilches Narro,

Mesach Hitchen and Patrick Draper gave Wilmslow a three goal cushion and ensured that the cup would be returning to Wilmslow before King’s Chester scored a late consolation goal.

On Tuesday, the team were once again in action, this time in the final of the Macclesfield and District Cup. Goals from Sam Dickov and Nick Brown ensured that Wilmslow came away with the title and secured a first treble. It has been a hugely successful season for the team, claiming the ESFA North West League, The Cheshire Cup and Macclesfield and District Cup, finishing with a record of: played 30, won 27, drawn 2 and lost 1. The team have scored 118 goals in all competitions and conceded just 13. A fantastic achievement from all involved with the team. Special thanks must go to team sponsors, Brand Interiors http://www.brandinteriors.co.uk/ for their sponsorship and support this season.

RoundersOn Tuesday, our rounders teams played a block fixture away against Tytherington. There were impressive wins for the Year 7 and the Year 8 teams, 10 – 6 ½ and 8 – 5, but a combined Year 9 and 10 team were well beaten 20 – 8 ½ .

CricketThe Year 7 cricket team made it two wins from two following their Cheshire Cup game against West Hill on Tuesday. Batting first, Wilmslow made 96 for 2 from their 20 overs, with James Morten hitting 28 and Will Murray making 25. West Hill got off to a flying start but finished 2 runs short on 94 for 2 off their 20 overs.

The U15 cricket team, depleted due to injuries, were well beaten by a strong Kings Macclesfield side in their fixture on Tuesday. They were all out for 62 in reply to Kings Macclesfield’s 125.

TennisOn Wednesday afternoon the U13 boys team played against Stockport Grammar in the AEGON national competition. Unfortunately the boys lost 5 matches to 1 against strong opposition, with their number 1 and 2 players being nationally ranked inside the top 40.

The U16 football team played against Fallibroome in the Macclesfield and District Cup Final on Thursday. Goals from Matt Vitale and Max McGreal ensured a 2-0 win. The U16s made it a third Macclesfield and District title this season, following previous wins for the U15s and senior teams. The U14s will be hoping to make it 4 titles when they play in the final of the same competition next week.

Alderley Edge Parish Youth Council

CALL FOR PARISH YOUTH COUNCILLORS!

Interested young people aged 10-14 are being called upon to be involved in a new Parish Youth Council.

Cllr Rachael Grantham explained “the Parish Youth Council is an opportunity for 12 inspirational youngsters to represent the views of their generation whilst working closely with

the Parish Council and our Ward Councilor, Craig Browne to inspire and influence change for the better within our village.”

Cllr Ilana Higham added “we are really keen to hear about what kinds of things young people would like to see happening in Alderley Edge, but we also want to encourage them to get involved in making decisions that directly affect them, as well as helping them to understand how the Parish Council works and relates to them.”

Cllr Grantham continued “there are very few Youth Parish Councils in existence in the North of England, but we have visited some of those that do and have been very encouraged by the enthusiasm shown by the young people and the interest they have shown in their communities. We would like to foster this same enthusiasm in Alderley Edge, for the benefit of the whole community.”

We would like to invite all interested youngsters and their Parents/Guardians to the Festival Hall on Monday 16th May between 5pm-6pm to come along and find out a bit more about becoming a Parish Youth Councillor.

We have researched various funding options for potential Youth Council projects and there are plenty available so all we need now is an enthusiastic, optimistic and inspirational group of children ready to make the first ‘Alderley Edge Parish Youth Council’. We believe that this will appeal to individuals who want to play an active part in their community. Taking part will also add to their CVs.

Terms of Reference can be found on the Parish Council website (www.alderleyedge-pc.gov.uk) and give a brief outline of what to expect 16th May. Young people (and parents) interested in coming along are asked to email Cllr Rachael Grantham to confirm their attendance.
