Normality has been restored, school gates are open,

late nights playing in the garden are limited to weekends and in general we are all back to routine, but the fun and frolics

haven’t stopped.. Yes we had a new Queen

of Puck in Kilorglin and Elysha Brennan is our new

Rose of Tralee, so now it’s off to Listowel for the ever popular Harvest Racing Festival. It’s a tradition in Kerry now really, the summer is not officially over until you have spent a day at Listowel Races and brought Sam Maguire back to the Kingdom in September, so while we can’t promise Sam just yet, we do have all the news from what to expect in Listowel. We also catch up with Orla Diffily and Mary O Donnell who will be featuring in RTE’s very popular Today Show in the afternoon, we are very proud that our Kerry Ladies will be a regular feature on the show.We are also delighted to have Carol Kennelly Award winning milliner join us this month with her four different looks to get you past the winning post for ladies day, Carol is no stranger to the winning enclosure so might be worth taking some of her tips on board if you’re planning a trip to Listowel. We have some advice from the experts on getting your home ready for the long autumn winter season ahead and as we all know that’s longer than our summer so take those tips and use wisely. Our wedding this month is Nicola McEvoy Former Rose of Tralee, delighted to bring you some lovely memories of her special day held recently,

So all in all there’s lots for you to catch up with, get the kids to school, boil the kettle and take a little time out with your cup of tea and your favourite monthly read, we all need a little me time…..

Until next month

We in Connect Love Listowel, it’s got wonderful shops, delicious eatiers to suit

all palates, convenient parking and of course the forthcoming 7 day Listowel Harvest Racing Festival, from Sunday 13th to Saturday 19th of September, We bring you all the details below of what to expect to ensure that Listowel is the place you want to be this September.

Racing highlights include the €175,000 Guinness Kerry National Handicap Steeplechase (Grade A) Chase on Wednesday 16th; the €55,000 Guinness Handicap Hurdle on Thursday 17th and the Listowel Races Supporters Club Sponsored Race ‘The Slán Abhaile” on Saturday 19th September. This

year the total Prize Money over the 7-days is €1.2 million (up €150,000 on 2014). Fashionable racers of all ages can look forward to three days of Best Dressed competitions, including dedicated categories for gentlemen, ladies, younger racers, vintage lovers and couples. The fashion highlight of the week is the McElligott’s Honda Ladies Day on Friday 18th of September judged by model Alison Canavan and former TV apprentice, Brian Purcell with a total cash prize fund of €5,750. As always, in addition to top quality National Hunt and Flat racing, the Listowel Racing Committee have organised an extensive range of free entertainment, including the Kerry Group Family Day; daily race card draws with cash

prizes, promotions, music and more. The Listowel Harvest Racing meeting opens on Sunday 13th of September with the Kerry Group Family Day. This year, the Listowel Racing Committee have expanded the Family Day programme to include performers, stilt walkers, fire eaters and face painters - all for free. Plus Fuji photo will capture the moment and take and print your Listowel Races Family Fun photo for free, kindly sponsored by McGuire’s Pharmacy Listowel. So make sure to bring along all the family, and remember children under 12 have free admission to the race course, when accompanied by an adult.

As well as being renowned for its Serious Racing and Serious Fun, Listowel is also celebrated as the place to be for ladies and gentlemen with Sensational STYLE! This year, the Lyons of East River Best Dressed Man is on Thursday 17th of September; the McElligotts Honda Best Dressed Lady is on Friday 18th and the Listowel Tidy Towns Group, in association with An Taisce, Best Presentation of an Up-cycled / Re-styled or Authentic Vintage outfit is on Saturday 19th of September.

As with every successful event there has to be someone at the helm to steer it to its success and we have had a chat with two of Listowels well known business people Brenda Daly Secretary of Listowel Race Company and John McGuire Business Man and Charimain of Listowel Race Company. We asked them to tell us a little bit about the races and what it means to the town of Listowel and also to give us a little background on it all.

LISTOWEL PREPARES FOR YET ANOTHER BUMPER

RACE WEEK

Page 5: Connect issue 18 September

John as chairman of Listowel Race Company, tell us a little about your role in ensuring that the event is a success. As Chairman, I liaise with Brenda, our Secretary, to co-ordinate and organise all activities proposed by the board to ensure both our June and September meetings are successful.

As a business man in the town how valuable is the race meeting to the town each year? With over 100,000 people, over 7-days, it’s a welcome asset and a financial boost to all services provided by the town.

It’s not just all about the racing though? There are a whole week of events planned around it can you tell us a little about all of this? The Harvest Festival provides a variety of entertainment and amusements each evening, culminating on the Friday night, after Ladies Day, with the All-Ireland Wren boy CompetitionLooking at Listowel as a shopping town can you tell our readers why they should put listowel on the list when considering a shopping trip? We have a fantastic variety of shops, top quality boutiques, traditional pubs, restaurants and pharmacies, with ample free parking for the week.

Finally John, Listowel lost one of its most respected and cherished ladies this week Mary Keane, would you like to give us a little tribute on your thoughts of the late Mary and her importance to the town of Listowel ?Mary was a friend to everybody in Listowel and was held in very high esteem. She was a wonderful ambassador for the town, with a lovely welcoming smile for everyone on the street and in the bar. Her presence will be sadly missed.

Hi Brenda, Can you give our readers a little background on Listowel Racing festival? Listowel Races Harvest Festival Meeting will be celebrating its 157th anniversary this year. This meeting gradually built up from a 3-day race meeting, to four days, five days and it’s now a full 7-day Festival Meeting. We start on Sunday September 13th and finish on Saturday September 19th, this year. Sunday is Kerry Group Day and Family Day, then Wednesday has the Guinness Kerry National Race, with a prize fund of €175,000, as well as great racing every day, Thursday is Best Dressed Man’s Day, Friday is Ladies Day and on Saturday, the final day, there’s a competition to find the best Vintage/Up styled outfit, which is open to both males and females. Prize money this year stands at a total of €1.2 million and there is no race over the 7-days with a prize fund of less than €12,000. Sunday is an all-National Hunt Card, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday Thursday & Friday have a mixture of National Hunt and Flat Racing and Saturday finishes again with an All-National Hunt Card.

How long are you part of the event and are there a large background team ensuring it all goes to plan? I’m going into my twenty-second year with Listowel Race Company now, my father Brendan was Secretary of many years standing, when I became his assistant. My office is a fairly tightly knit group, I have three assistants for Race Week and just one assistant in the weeks leading up to the meeting, but our racecourse Caretaker, John Sheehan plays a very big part in the success of the meeting, as does our Track Manager, Dan O’ Connell and really the race meeting is very much a group effort and we all support each other when things get really busy. We also have a wonderful team of Directors, with our Chairman, John McGuire and Vice Chairman, David Fitzmaurice and all of the Directors take a great interest in the success of the meeting and are a very hands-on committee

Listowel is now regarded as one of the leading meetings in Ireland what do you put this success down to? Definitely the enthusiasm of our Board of Directors, they try to introduce something new every year and also Listowel is a race meeting with a great tradition, which brings people back year after year. I’m often told that Listowel racecourse’s atmosphere is hard to beat.

You now also have a meeting in June would you like to see more dates for the calendar

ConneCt | Cover storyThe lifestyle magazine for Kerry

or do you think this will be possible going forward? Yes, we would like to acquire more dates, possibly adding another day on to our June Meeting and it would be one of ourambitions to achieve this.

Have you any tips for the punters on how best to enjoy a day out at the races? Dress for the weather would be one of my tips and really importantly, wear comfortable shoes! You stand a lot and walk a lot at race meetings. When betting, wager only what you can afford to lose other than that, have a great day

Checking out what else Listowel has to offer we popped in to see Jen in CoCo

Boutique which has an amazing collection for the upcoming season, vibrant colors comfy casuals and an amazing collection just in time for Race Day, you will definitely be part of the action in the champagne tent in an outfit from

CoCo, the Amy Huberman collection of shoes and boots arriving for the autumn definitely makes the transformation from sandals and flip flops all that more bearable.. Check out for yourself you will not be disappointed. Autumn came early this year so we’ve long since relinquished our summer wardrobe. Looking on the bright side though, and believe me there is always a bright side in Fashion! This season’s trends are so gorgeous and flattering that the sooner you get your hands on them the better! And where better than the Tae Lane Store on Church Street, its bright and spacious feel as you walk in the door is refreshing, what’s new in Tae Lane?

One of the hottest trends is Denim!! Oh yes, it’s all about the hard wearing fabric we all know and love, think denim shirts, jeans, dresses, skirts, jackets, and the trend doesn’t stop there, so don’t be afraid to mix it up, wear denim on denim too as the old rules no longer apply. Wear it tailored, try it with a contrasting colour, soften the look with feminine fabrics to keep it from looking too 80’s, especially if you’ve already done that decade, if you know what I mean! TaeLane have a gorgeous lightweight denim shirt from there new Danish brand, Part Two, which will see you right through next spring, definitely the savvy shoppers buy this month. Taelane tell us they are very excited to announce another new Danish label to the store, Kaffe, with it’s flattering but figure hugging textured dresses and chunky knitwear in this season’s softer shades, all at prices you will love. We’re looking forward to October when Tae Lane will host an exclusive event for devotees of the exquisitely quirky Owen Barry Bags. Definitely a date for the diary...

After all that shopping it was time to stop for a quick spot of lunch and this is always a dilemma in Listowel with so many nice places to eat, on this occasion the choice was Scribes, also based on Church street it looked busy from the outside which is always a positive sign, so I found myself and nice seat, the menu was extensive to suit all tastes I opted for the chicken ceaser salad. My waiter was most pleasant and chatted while my food was being prepared, it arrived prompt and warm and I have to say it was a delicious salad, with a diet coke all for under 10euro, a good choice and I would certainly go back,

After lunch it was another quick walk around to see what else Listowel had to offer I stopped in for a quick hi to Danny in Changes hair and beauty, Danny is always smiling and bursting with energy, so make sure to pop in and say hello and tell him we sent you, we then spotted Listowel Garden Centre nestled away around the corner from Changes, WOW is all I can say when I walked in the door.. The colour, variety and range of things available! It’s not just a garden centre, it’s got lots more, and nick was telling me about the Christmas shop opening soon, can’t wait to check that out. Make sure you do too.

McGuire’s pharmacy to be fitted in here somewhere too...

Listowel is a vibrant shopping town with most of the shop’s owner operated so as well getting good choice and value you are

supporting local, so when you next want to take a trip to the shops put Listowel on the list, it’s well worth a visit

With the rain pouring down outside and temperatures dropping it was hard for Suzanne Keane to resist an invitation to sunny Frankfurt to test out the new Honda Jazz. When you find yourself sandwiched between a Ferrari and a Porsche on winding German roads a Honda Jazz certainly wouldn’t be topping the wish list of cars to be driving but in fairness to the little Honda it did manage to hold its own on the bends and since the two supercars shot off in the opposite direction once we hit a straight patch I will forever be under the illusion that the Jazz could keep up! The 3rd generation of Honda’s B-Segment car is due to hit Irish roads later on this year and comes with an impressive level of equipment as standard so don’t let the starting price of €17,395 be a deterrent. Despite the exterior redesign it’s not the cutest, sportiest or best looking car in its class but the new Jazz is all about versatility. It has increased in length by 95mm over its predecessor and at 5’9’’ I could comfortably sit behind the driver’s seat. Inside the cabin a flush mounted touchscreen and soft touch materials await but the real surprise

is with how much you can actually fit in! On arrival at the Honda Akademie we were greeted by a Honda Jazz with a full size surfboard on the passenger side and a Yuki Plant behind the driver’s seat. Not only do the rear seats fold down – they also tilt up to allow for taller objects to be carried (up to 1.3m high) and if you ever fancied having a nap in your car bring a duvet because the front seats fold backwards to convert the interior into a bed. The Jazz will be available with just one engine option – a 1.3 iVTEC which is more powerful than the previous 1.4 and more economical than the 1.2 version. This engine will come as both a 6 speed manual and a CVT auto which would be my choice! It’s not going to win any races but your inner speed demon may enjoy the sweet spot between 4,500 and 6,500 rpm – especially if you’re using the paddle shift which comes with the CVT version.

This year’s Roses released 378 balloons into the sky over

Meadowlands Hotel Tralee to celebrate the hotel’s long association with the Rose of Tralee International Festival, welcoming 378 roses to the hotel since 2005. The Meadowlands Hotel, which has undergone a major transformation throughout, hosted the annual Traditional Irish Party Night for the Roses and their families in the newly refurbished An Móinéar Restaurant and Johnny Frank’s Bar & Lounge. The General Manager, Siobhan Ni Mhathuna, said: “With the successful development of the Wild Atlantic Way, we saw the importance of investing time and money into renovating key areas, improving services and rebranding the hotel to enhance the hotel’s reputation as a Premier Gaeltacht Hotel in Kerry with a stylish new image. At the Meadowlands Hotel, we want our guests to stay and dine in style!” Coming out of recession times, the family-run, four star hotel wanted to create a fresh new look by using brighter colours and lighting with a splash of colour. As a result, the Meadowlands hotel has been fashioned into a contemporary and stylish deign while maintaining a traditional and cosy atmosphere.

Renovations to the guest rooms, restaurant, bar, lounge and reception areas have been completed in time for autumn arrivals and Listowel Race goers. As part of the transformation, the hotel has been rebranded with new logo, website and design to reflect its new image.

Menus have gone local, reflecting Kerry’s best locally produced ingredients and customized to accommodate all dining requirements to include vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free, guests seeking healthy alternatives and traditional restaurant fare. The fish and seafood is even sourced from the family’s fish company in Dingle and delivered fresh to the hotel on a daily basis.

The Ó Mathúna Family are looking forward to a new era at Meadowlands Hotel and welcoming new and returning guests to their stylish hotel. My Fave Buys This MonthThis month, I went in search of bargain make-up that looks great and could rival high-end brands. After sampling one of Boots No 7 products, I decided to take a chance and purchase three items to try and I have been pleasantly surprised. The Boots 3 for 2 offer made the purchase all the more attractive, with the cheapest item essentially coming free.

No 7 Match Made Foundation: A great feature of the No 7 brand is the skin colour match machine they use to match your skin tone to the perfect colour foundation. I decided to go up one shade in order to blend my foundation into my developing tan. There are various foundation formulas for every skin type. I wanted medium coverage for combination skin so the Match Made Foundation (€18.95) was best for me. If you have oily skin, I recommend going with No 7 Beautifully Matte Foundation (€17.50). If you have dry skin, try No 7 Instant Radiance Foundation (€16.25).

No 7 Extravagant Volume Mascara: Hypoallergenic and with a light weight formula, No 7’s Extravagant Volume Mascara (€15.50) gives you that doe eyed look that we long for. Forget false lashes, the effect created by this mascara is dramatic and glamorous. Don’t want volume? Why not try No 7 Exceptional Definition Mascara (€14.95) or No 7 Extreme Length Extend Mascara (€14.95).

No 7 Matte Lip Crayon: With great staying power, fabulous colour choices and an easy to use “crayon” applicator, this product is perfect for nights out and will instantly add oomph to any make-up look. €11.75

St Tropez Gradual Tan In Shower Lotion: If you want a natural looking glow but haven’t got the time to spend carefully creating a streak-free tan then this is the product for you. Three minutes in the shower and you’re good to go! Simply shower as normal, step out and generously apply the lotion from top to toe, leave for three minutes and rinse off with warm water. Don’t forget to wash your hands straight after application. €19.99

Eucerin AQUAporin ACTIVE Moisturising Cream Rich: It’s that time of year again when your skin can start to give out a bit. Dryness, flaking and tightness are not uncommon as the weather changes, especially if your skin is dry, sensitive or dehydrated. Eucerin’s AQUAporin ACTIVE Moisturising Cream Rich is hydrating and non-greasy and makes a great base for make-up. This product also comes in a “light” formula for those of you who find “rich” to be too heavy for your skin. €17.99

NIVEA Q10 Plus Anti-Wrinkle Serum Pearls: Full of coenzyme Q10 and Hyaluronic Acid, this little wonder helps to soften skin and smooth out wrinkles for a younger complexion. The serum pearls burst and dissolve into a silky serum which you apply to the neck and face twice daily. Not only will this product help refine wrinkles; it also prevents new ones from developing. €17.99

Garnier Micellar Cleansing Water: Garnier’s micellar water is a multi-tasker, boasting the ability to remove make-up, cleanse and hydrate the skin. It is safe to use on the face, eyes and lips, is hypoallergenic and suitable for sensitive skin. I find this product as good as any eye make-up remover and its perfume-free formula means it’s gentle and non-irritating on the eye area. Simply soak two cotton pads with the micellar water, place over closed eyes and leave for about two minutes in order to allow your eye make-up to dissolve. This easy removal means less pulling of the skin - and you know what that means? Less wrinkles! €4.53

Penney’s Fake Nails: Want long nails with good shape and artsy designs? Penney’s glue on nails come in a variety of styles and colours including French manicure. Each pack contains 24 nails so you won’t be stuck for a great fit. At €1.50 a pack, you can’t go wrong!

Pearly Whites: Mind Those Wisdom Teeth!By Dr. Marcas Mac Domhnaill

Fáilte romhaibh thar nais! Now that Lughnasa is upon us, we are determined to enjoy the remainder of the Summer holiday season. For students, the different festivals during August, signal that school terms will soon start again. While parents plan for the academic year with purchases of books and uniforms for their children, dentists as health professionals, have a duty to help parents plan for their children’s dental health. This is especially important when they are planning to leave home for the first time, whether to further their education or to go to work.

For young adults living away from home for the first time, dental and oral health may not be at the top of their agenda. They all like to have an attractive smile but they often don’t give back teeth much care. However, this age group have a common dental complaint, namely wisdom teeth. The wisdom teeth usually grow into the mouth between the ages of 18 and 25, but they can often erupt much later in life. They are the last teeth to grow into the mouth and are in each corner of the mouth, upper right, upper left, lower left and lower right. Some people do not have all their wisdom teeth. This is because they either remain buried in the jaw bones or that they are absent completely. It is not unusual for people to have only two or three of their wisdom teeth. A panoramic radiograph can easily be taken to show all the teeth in the jaws, if there is any doubt as to their presence.

If wisdom teeth remain buried in the jaw, they can be left in place unless they cause a problem. They would certainly be removed if cysts started to grow around them. One should get buried wisdom teeth screened by a radiograph every few years, to be sure that they remain healthy. It is unusual for cysts to be detected by the patient, as they are painless. However, they can destroy much of the jawbone around a tooth if they are left unchecked. In extreme cases, this could lead to a thinning of the jaw and possible jaw fracture.

Infection around wisdom teeth is very common. It may be a full dental abscess or it may be a superficial gum infection (pericoronitis). Both of these are very painful and pericoronitis is often repetitive. In these cases, removal is usually the only remedy. Many wisdom teeth are removed in general dental practice, while some would need referral to an oral surgeon for removal. This would be the case if the tooth was deeply buried in the jaw, if it was severely tilted (impacted) in the jaw or if it overlapped nerves or sinuses in the jaws. Oral surgeons usually do these extractions as day cases and they can be done with local anaesthetic with or without sedation. Being put to sleep (general anaesthetic) is also sometimes used.

Finally, keeping the mouth clean is important for all age groups but especially for young adults. If it is difficult to clean around wisdom teeth, perhaps a disinfectant mouthwash could be used. Many chemists sell water jet devices to help clean these difficult areas. Encourage any young adults in your family to take their oral health seriously.

in black. The trick to pulling off this look is to use different fabrics like wool, leather, cotton and denim. Another way to pull off this look would be to start with a white shirt and build the rest of your outfit in black as it will provide great contrast without drowning in a single colour.

2. 1970’s. The seventies are coming around full circle. Zara have dedicated their entire autumn winter collection to this trend. Corduroy suits, higher waisted trousers and the use of colour in their knitwear 10 pay homage to the 1970’s, their looks have a heavy influence of the rolling stones.

3. Polo/Turtle Necks. These really are the key piece for A/W. A lot of designers showed turtle necks instead of shirts with their suits. I love this look, it brings a little something to a classic suit. My advice, spend a little more on polo/turtle necks as you will want the best quality as this will be a style staple.

4. Overcoats. Every man needs a good overcoat and this year it has never been so important. I’m going to share one of my favourite stores in Tralee for mens jackets, T. Lyons Outdoor wear, 14 Milk Market lane(behind CH Chemist). Great quality at extremely affordable prices, definitely worth a look.

Grooming:Pedicures. Here is my how to guide in looking after your feet. You will need, a basin to soak feet in, essential oils for soaking( or a preferred shower gel works fine) a towel to dry them, nail clippers, nail file, a foot file( pedi-egg or something similar), a heavy moisturiser and cotton socks. Start by filling a basin of warm water with essential oils or shower gel of choice. Soak feet for about 10-15 mins. When you are ready, dry your feet well and start attacking the dead skin which will have softened with a foot file. When you are happy that your feet are smooth move on to your toe nails. Cut each nail in a straight line, do not pull cut nails off as this will weaken your nails over time. Clip along in a straight line. Follow up with a nail file. Only file in one direction do not pull the file over and back, this too weakens nails. When your nails are smooth apply a generous dollop of moisturiser and massage into both feet. Cover with cotton socks as this will aid the moisturiser and keep feet smoother for longer. Repeat every 6-8 weeks.

GETTING THE HOME READY FOR WINTERIt’s the time of year, summer is over if indeed it ever began… we look around the house and see what needs to be done to have it ready for the long autumn winter ahead, we also look this time of year to little changes we can do to improve the look of our home or how we can save on our energy and heating costs so we have asked the experts for a few tips to help you on your way to getting the house ready for the winter.

GIVE YOUR HOUSE A NEW LOOK BY ENHANCING YOUR HOME WITH TILES

Many people are happy living in their home where they have made good friends over many years and enjoy community life.So why move when the simplest way to improve upon perfection is by re-tiling your home creating an instant impact with beautiful tiles. There is nothing quite as pleasing as a newly tiled floor or brand new bathroom that gives an immediate new look to your home Tiles are not just functional but are also very beautiful with so many different finishes and colours suitable for every room including living rooms bedrooms as well as bathrooms and utility walls and floors. The key to successful tiling is to choose timeless designs and colours that stand the test of time So seek out the latest design trends on refurbishing your home from the expertise available at The H Factor The team at the H Factor are here to help take the hassle from you and give reassurance you are making the right selection when refurbishing your home. So let us do the work and you take the credit. The H Factor - where good design meets affordable quality

HOW DO YOU HEAT YOUR HOME?

We all love working in the garden through summer but at this time of year we have got to remember that it needs preparing for the autumn too, prune away any flowers that may have a summer shelf life, its also a good time for replanting as the soil is moist due to the summer showers. New plants can also be planted in the autumn with a clear conscience. This is the last chance before the winter to bring a bit of colour into the garden. Roses, should be planted ideally in Autumn, before the first ground frost. In winter, wet and changeable weather with low temperatures effect the lawn. That’s why lawns need some extra ‘pampering’ again before the cold spell begins. When the leaves fall in autumn, they should be cleared from the lawn on a regular basis. Leaves left lying on the lawn will deprive it of light and will cause dry, brown patches. Mow your lawn for the last time around the beginning of November. Make sure that the grass is not cut shorter than 5 cm as longer grass can make better use of less sunlight. This will ensure better resistance against weeds and moss.

Colour is key in any home, while the magnolia is safe on the walls color is essential, to ad life and vibrancy to your living space, if you are not adventurous enough to change the walls why not ad a splash of color with the furniture... it is very important to plan colors correctly, if you like strong colors choose a feature wall for that color, but if you’re not totally sure introduce the color in accessories so that you can change your mind without any drastic measures. You can get carried away with colors very easily so choose wisely and take advice from the experts there are lots of in house interior designers in all furniture stores so don’t be afraid to ask for their help. We all love the comfort of home, so enjoy creating that new look...

Hi Orla, you operate a very successful agency - UPFRONT MODEL MANAGEMENT and after last year’s debut on the catwalk of the popular RTE Today Show, we hear you are getting ready to put another season on the road with them what does this mean for the agency?

Yes I started styling and presenting fashion slots on the Today Show on RTE last September. It’s a wonderful show, with a great team, and I am really enjoying it. Since January models from Upfront Model Management have also appeared on the show, and all of us have enjoyed the opportunity to meet and work with so many wonderful fashion brands and top stylists from all over the country. We are so looking forward to returning this Season with lots of style for all ages and sizes.

How often will you be participating in the show? I will be styling and presenting a weekly fashion slot every Tuesday afternoon and will be showcasing fashion labels and designers from all over the country, but lots from Kerry too - including well known fashion and bridal boutiques and high street labels. You will have to tune in to find out more! If anyone in the fashion business wants to know more, please drop me an email on [email protected]

Will there be Kerry Models on the Show this Season? There will be lots of well known faces from Kerry modeling on the Show, but we also have models based in Cork also. Remember, we are always looking for new faces, so if you are interested in modeling, make sure to get in touch.

Finally tell us a little more about UPFRONT? We are a PR, Event and Model Management Consultancy based in Kerry. We work with clients here in Kerry, but also nationwide and abroad. As well as managing Kerry Fashion Week and the KFW Irish Fashion Industry Awards with our business partner, Paul Ruane, we also offer a consumer, fashion and hospitality PR service and co ordinate launches, corporate and private events and offer a premier DMC service to clients based abroad. Excitingly, I am also involved with Marietta Doran in the inaugural Ireland Fashion Showcase which will be held in New York on 10th of September. Well known blogger, Erika Fox, who is from Glenbeigh in Kerry is also on our team and Carol Kennelly Millinery, House of Delphine and Caroline Matthews (all who have Kerry connections) will all be showcasing at the event. Lastly, this year we are celebrating our 20th anniversary in business and I want to thank you Margaret in Connect, and everyone in Kerry who has been so hugely supportive of us over the years and my own brilliant team at Upfront !

RTE LINE UP OF EXPERTS...Mary you are back to the Today show for another season, how does it feel to be on live TV? I am looking forward to my second season. Live TV is nerve racking but I am glad I have a season behind me for experience. There is a great team on the show so that certainly makes things easier.

Will your slot be regular weekly for the show? My slot is weekly and some weeks twice! Depending on the time of year, if it’s close to busy shopping times of the year we review the latest gift sets etc. available to help the viewer choose gifts and the likes.

How long are you in the beauty industry now Mary? I am 30 years in tube beauty world now! It doesn’t seem that long but I guess when you enjoy your job it makes things a lot easier, if you look forward to doing it every day.

You have a very successful blog and social media presence how important do you think this is to the industry now more than when you started out? The beauty industry has changed so much since I started. Beauty blogging has become a way of life now and many people will only purchase products after reading their reviews from their favourite bloggers so it’s definitely important to have an online presence

where people can read your reviews on products before they choose what they want to purchase. It gives people that extra choice

Have you any secrets to young girls thinking about going down that path and doing beauty as a career? There are no real secrets to be honest, to make in the beauty world you have to be prepared to do a lot of hard work; the glamour side can be a lot less than girls starting out think. Beauty salons have late nights and weddings can be

any day of year so it’s not an average days’ work there are lots of extra hours to ensure your clients are happy and want to come back again to you. If you are willing to work hard it can be the best job ever and your clients can be become friends for life.

KERRY LADIESinWe meet Orla and Mary who are both starting they second season on the RTE Today Show.

CONNECT Style HELLO AGAIN EVERYONE,WELL THERE IS A DEFINITE AUTUMN CHILL OUT THERE AND AS WE START A NEW SEASON BOTH IN THE WEATHER AND THE FASHION TRADE,EVERYONE IS ASKING WHAT ARE THE HOT LOOKS AND COLOURS FOR AUTUMN/WINTER 2015,SO THIS MONTH I LL GIVE YOU A FEW LITTLE SNIPPETS OF WHAT TO EXPECT .

ConneCt | fAshionThe lifestyle magazine for Kerry

There are an abundance of trends out there and no decade has been left out and it seems the designers have been seeking inspiration from the past as Victorian, boho and gothic are all big news this autumn/winter.As I ve said before have fun experimenting with the new styles and if you like the more sophiscated look you are in luck this season as the emphasis is on couture detailing, quality fabrics and exquisite cuts ensuring all shapes are catered for.

The overall look is a more edgy modern and practical ladylike silhou-ette, let’s move on to colours and we are again going to see a range of colours this autumn/ winter. Shades of blue from sapphire to indigo and all shades in between. The rich autumnal browns and creams are complimented beautifully by subtle shades of gold and the warm berry colours such as raspberry pink, cranberry red and blackberry purple mean there are colours to suit every complexion. Grey is hanging in there, from silver grey to the darker graphite hues.Prints may not be for everyone but they will be as bold as ever. Finally I cannot talk about autumn/winter without mentioning the cape, the popularity of the cape was seen on all the runway shows and this will no doubt translate to boutiques and chainstores. From little capes over dresses in a delicate sheer material to wool cape coats they are a very elegant yet easy to wear asset to any wardrobe. Well that’s all for now,

happy shopping,

UNTIL NEXT MONTH

Just because they can manage to carry all of their personal possessions in a tiny wallet, tucked away in a back pocket (whatever the occasion, the same wallet is transferred from work clothes to jeans to suit) they look at our handbags as if they were alien beings latched on to the side of their loved one. Yet do they ever stop for a moment and wonder what would happen if they suddenly needed a hairbrush, spray and a mirror?

What would they do if they needed a spare pair of tights or photographs from their 3rd cousins wedding in Spain last year?

No, he won’t find those in his wallet. What happens if he suddenly develops a sugar rush - which pocket he is going to have a bar of chocolate stashed away in? The children’s birth certs, old passports, diaries ,perfume, bandages, nail files ,notebooks and a couple of magazines just in case I have a moment to myself at some stage in the day.

No, a man will never understand us and our passion for handbags. So when you arrive home with your new bag to match your Autumn outfit, and discreetly place your old one with all the others in storage you are certainly going to need again at some time in the future, and he raises his eyebrows, just be patient with him. Men really don’t understand.

What is it about women’s handbags that men don’t understand?

VEGETARIAN CURRYWITH MARK DOE

I love curries, not to spicy mind, but curries that are packed full of aromatic flavours from the spices and complimented with a little heat from the chilli. Vegetable curries make for a beautiful light, fresh and healthy curry, and can be a great way to introduce kids to different vegetables. Also adding chickpeas or varieties of beans or pulses ensure the curry is packed with protein, which many vegetarian dishes lack in. Make your own curry powder either by grinding your own whole spices or using ready ground spices. The difference compared to brought curry powders and pastes is well worth the effort. The four main spices for a basic curry powder are chilli powder, turmeric, coriander and cumin. I also add some seeds from the cardamom pod. Use a hotter chilli powder or chopped fresh chillies for a hotter curry. Garam Maslala is a blend of spices that can be added to your curry also. All of the spices are readily available from supermarkets or health food shops. This curry also freezes well once cooked and always seems to taste better the following day.

We all have hobbies and often generate some income from them. At what point is your hobby more than just a pastime?

Indicators your Hobby is a BusinessAlthough each case is different, obvious indicators are:• Selling goods or services online,

in shops and/or at markets.• Making sales outside family and friends.• Business cards, logos etc,• Webpages including business pages.• Charging for services and / or goodsTip: Google It answer may tell you!

Are there Tax ImplicationsA hobby becomes a business as soon as the intention is to generate a profit. While it may ultimately fail to do this the intention is sufficient to make it a taxable business.

What should I doSimply register your business and return profit. Profits from part time businesses often have little or no tax implications, other than doing a tax return.NB: Make sure to deduct all business related expenses

What happens if I make a LossBusiness losses are an allowable tax deduction against other income or your spouse’s income (if applicable). Tip: Where investment is required register early to ensure any potential allowable tax losses can be claimed.

SOCIAL MEDIA IT’S NOT ADVERTISING!

by KEN TOBIN

If I had a Euro for every time a business owner referred to Social Media as ‘just another form of advertising’ I’d be retired already! So let me re-hash my many conversations on this down to one short piece.

It’s about communicating with the most important people to you and your business…your customers. When you commit to setting up a Social Media presence for your business, you must also commit to communicating with current and future customers.

The hint is in the name – SOCIAL Media – It’s about being Social.

Think about Social Media for your Business in three parts;

1. Connecting with Your Customer• Sharing other people’s and businesses content• Joining in on the conversation, as an expert in what you do for

a living• Posting information and content of interest to your customers• Promoting good causes and events• Providing entertainment to your customers

2. Handling Customer ServiceOver the past number of years customer service has evolved into our 24/7 society, where customers want to be able to contact their favourite companies at a time that suits them. If a customer finds it tough to reach your business, what was a minor concern, through frustration can become explosive.

3. Informing Your CustomerWhat I often refer to with Clients as ‘becoming the expert’, showing your current and potential customers the hard work and expertise that goes into what you do, and showing them the benefit they can get from your business, this includes:• Providing Behind the Scenes of your business• Answering customer questions or solving problems for

customers• Showcasing the service/products your business has to offer• Testimonials and Content showing satisfied customers• Providing easy to find contact details and information on your

business• Announcements and Achievements your business has to

celebrate

Most of my clients get it straight away, that their activity on Social Media is about building a relationship with their customers. Don’t underestimate the level of work that goes into building trust in your business online. The National Minimum Wage (NMW) was first introduced in April 2000 at €5.59.

Caroline McEnery, Managing Director of the HR Suite was one of nine experts appointed to the Low Pay Commission by the government last March to examine the national minimum wage rate currently set at €8.65.

On an annual basis, this new body will advise Government on the appropriate rate for the National Minimum Wage. Caroline was one of six commission members who backed the proposal to raise the rate by 50 cent in April 2016. In making the decision the commission considered the regional aspects and the cost of living in essentially a three tiered economy made up of Dublin, major cities like Cork and Limerick and then the rest of the country. As a member of the low pay commission Caroline’s fundamental concern is to balance a basic statutory minimum pay rate that is fair, with one that is sustainable and which allows employers to continue to create quality sustainable jobs. The commission have examined the employment and unemployment rates generally, how earnings have changed since the minimum wage was last increased and what impact a change to the minimum wage would have on employment, the cost of living and on national competiveness.

Many of the employees on the minimum wage are those within the services sector and there lies the biggest challenge for employer wage cost management eg hotels, restaurants and retail and where their wage bill constitute one of their largest overheads. It has been recommended by the commission that any increase would be implemented later next year, to give seasonal employers a chance to get through the early and often quieter months of the year. The rate has been viewed by the commission as a sustainable increase and they are hopeful that the government will implement it in the upcoming October budget. The commission made strong recommendations to the government that the anomalies that currently exist for both employees and employers in relation to PRSI and taxation variances need to be addressed if a wage increase is to make a difference in real terms for employees and employers.

While the majority of children growing up in Ireland are conceived in heterosexual relationships, the number of children being reared by single women is growing. Advances in medical technology, such as egg freezing and IVF, are making this option easier for women. The attitudes of Irish people are also changing.

Over that last twelve months Ireland has passed legislation recognising same sex marriage and the 2014 Rose of Tralee “came out” as a gay woman; in doing so she provided the support for others to follow suit.

Traditionally, women went abroad for such treatments. Clinics visited by Irish women report a significant in the numbers of Irish women pursuing parenthood with donor sperm. As attitudes and acceptance change in Ireland, women are staying in Ireland for such treatments.

Options Available To Single Women Planning a Pregnancy

• IUI with Donor SpermThe option of donor sperm which is placed in the womb in a controlled medical environment is the most common option pursued by single women. Legislation ensures that the used is safe and securely acquired. At The Scotia Clinic the sperm used is imported from Denmark and is monitored and traced under Regulations of the HPRA (previously Irish Medicines Board). Pregnancy Rates with IUI and donor sperm vary, depending on a woman’s age, from 20-33%. Women take medications and are scanned to optimise the timing of insemination. It is recommended that women check their fertility in advance to ensure the treatment is appropriate for them.

• IVF with Donor SpermVery occasionally additional medical

factors such as endometriosis, reduced ovarian reserve may suggest that IVF is required. IVF is a more technological treatment and incurs additional cost.

• Embryo Donation and AdoptionFor some women IUI or IVF with their own eggs may not be possible, usually as they are older. In such cases the option of adopting embryos stored in an IVF clinic can be explored. Some women or couples prefer to opt for using both donor eggs and donor sperm to create embryos-we refer to this as embryo donation. In most cases we work with clinics in Spain or the Czech Republic who have a track record in this area.

• Egg FreezingIn recent times the technology called vitrification has enhanced the ability for freezing a woman’s eggs. Some women realise at an early point in their lives that they have not found their “lifelong” partner or that they will “go it alone” in years to come when they are ready for motherhood. Egg freezing is now an option. However, I would recommend attending a clinic with good expertise in this area. Having a check on Ovarian Reserve i.e. AMH blood test helps women to see whether they eggs to freeze. It is always best to do this at a young age (under 35).

Counselling Prior to TreatmentWhile most women / couples intending to undergo fertility treatments are content in their decision, it is a good idea to do a session or two with a Fertility Counsellor. This allows the parties to reflect on issues such as how to choose a donor and when to tell their children how they were conceived.

Key Points• Irish legislation which is derived

from the EU Human Tissue Directive ensures high standards, well regulated fertility care in Ireland. Any clinic providing IUI or IVF must be licenced to do so and regular inspections take place. More recent legislation means that sperm donors will no longer be anonymous; some couples may now wish to link to clinics outside of Ireland.

• A wide range of fertility treatments exist and your fertility clinic can guide you on what is best for each individual

• Counselling has an important role in making the final decision on single parenting.
