This month we are delighted to catch up with world renowned musician Liam O Connor. Liam has entertained

audiences all over the world and with his universal performance academy about to start soon we asked him about his love for music and how it all began.

Liam, tell us a little bit about where it all began, your love for music and the great talent you have shown over the years?

I was lucky to be born into a very musical house where instruments were not for looking at but for playing. My late mother and father and all my family played and we formed the O’Connor Family Band when I was a teenager. Being born in Barnacurra near Newmarket in Co. Cork we are in the Sliabh Luachra area so

again music was part of the fabric of life. Mom and Dad were my biggest influences with my music. I am now living in Beautiful Killarney and consider myself a Kerry man I guess and love entertaining locals and Tourists in Killarney each summer.

How old were you when you won your first all-Ireland medal?

I was 11 and it was a wonderful thrill to bring and All Ireland medal home. It is still something I am very proud of. An All-Ireland title on the concertina and a Beamish and Crawford Award.

You have produced many records and shared the stage with many familiar names; do you have a particular memory that stays in your head through all this?

I have recorded albums, the latest “Live at Ronnie Scott’s” and two DVDs. Of course touring the world with Michael Flatley and Lord of the Dance was a great experience. We played in all the great venues like Carnegie Hall, Radio City Music Hall and Madison Square Garden. I have also been lucky to perform, and record with some wonderful artists including the likes of Grammy winners John Themis and Paul Wertico plus many of the greatest Irish musicians. One of my collaborations that I am particularly proud of is my time recording with the late great Christy Hennessy. I was delighted to be part of his Duets album. He was a wonderful songwriter and singer.

Ireland is renowned for traditional music and its culture; do you find this opens many doors for you when travelling abroad?

I was appointed the first Tourist Ambassador for Killarney and there is no doubt that my music has opened many doors all over the world. They say music is a universal language and this is certainly true. I have done a number of tours to Brazil and as part of a cultural tour organised by the Irish Government we played in various towns outside of the mainstream areas. While we not might not have had many words that we could use we certainly could communicate through music. Of course as part of my Summer Show I welcome audiences from all over the world and to see them go away smiling makes my night. Many cannot

express in English how they feel after the show but they will let you know how much they enjoyed it by their demeanour.

Do encourage your own kids to partake in the traditional world?

My three children are all into the music and over the last few years have joined me on stage. Music is a good discipline for young kids and playing an instrument can take them

all over the world. However making a living from music is not easy but if any of them want to make a career of their music or singing I will support them. But that’s for the future. At present I love it when they join me on stage and we have some great times playing together.

What does Liam do the chill and wind down?

I am a big sports fan and always follow the football, hurling and rugby. I am a big Munster fan…. But to wind down I love anything to do with horses. I take part in show jumping, eventing and cross country and love riding out as it gets you away for all the stresses of the music industry.

Where to next for Liam O’ Connor?

I am putting the final touches to my Universal performance Academy where I will be coaching musicians, singers and back stage crew on all aspects of the music business. Those involved will also get a chance to work on my show so they will get both the practical and theoretical experience. I am also working on a Concert with the RTE orchestra. I will be back in the Killarney Avenue for the 11th season of my Summer Show and also have a number of big gigs coming up. Sera Husky and Animal Rescue. How did it all begin?

I set the rescue up in April last year. I had a number of huskies; one called Sera (my first) and pretty much immediately I was inundated with requests from other rescues, council pounds, and people who just didn’t want to put the work in to these beautiful dogs as they didn’t look beyond the cute puppy look. We have a capacity for thirty dogs and as soon as a dog gets a new home another is waiting to come in. We have also re-homed over thirty cats. All the dogs are neutered/spayed, vaccinated, micro chipped, treated for fleas and worms. Sadly, sometimes they arrive in a shocking state and need urgent or more serious and critical veterinary treatment. We have a group of dogs that will live with us because they have just been through too much already and here they have safety, comfort and will be well looked after. We also have cats, donkeys, goats, a pony, rabbits, pigs, reptiles (a Burmese Python, bearded dragon, and tarantula) and a Syrian hamster.

Is There A Need For A Husky Rescue?

Simple answer is yes. Without a doubt, and there’s a need for more husky rescues. We get five to six calls/emails/ Facebook messages a day regarding unwanted huskies. We then have to decide who comes in as we just haven’t the room for them all. If we had room for 100 dogs we still wouldn’t have enough room such is the current problem. We cover all of Ireland. Dogs have come to us from Belfast, Longford, Athlone, and we have re-homed as far away as Sligo, Warrenpoint and Dublin.

How do you organise Fundraising to support the service?

We cover some of the basic costs through our own charity shop in Rock St, Tralee; this doesn’t include any veterinary procedures. The basic weekly running costs are up to €250; this covers food, diesel, electricity, water, cleaning materials and basic maintenance which we do ourselves. Then spaying/neutering, vaccinating, micro

chipping, vet treatments for injured dogs can raise the running costs to as much as €5000. We fundraise where and when we can. We have permitted street collections, open days where we invite people to come and meet the dogs, quiz nights, BBQ summer fundraisers etc, we have also been in things like St Patrick’s day parade to raise awareness. In accordance with our Charity Constitution no one gets paid and 100 % of all monies donated or raised go to help keep the rescue going in a safe and secure manner. In Sera Husky, every single cent goes to the Rescue.

I guess volunteers are extremely important to your organisation tell us about your volunteers......

We have two fantastic groups of volunteers, one organised by Lane in the shop and the other organised by Michelle at the Rescue. We would not exist without these volunteers. Rain, hail or shine they are here, knowing that everything they do will help save more animals and they look for nothing in return.

Where To From Here?

We have accomplished a lot in our first year from building the rescue to getting our isolation unit to opening our shops, but there is much more to do. Having rescued over 180 animals and finding good homes for 130 we would like to increase that number by at least 50%, we have a plot put aside for an agility area and new set of kennels. Education is going to be a huge part of our second year, going to schools, youth cafes and scouts/guides, if children are educated from an early age maybe animal welfare will improve in years to come. We will continue to do these visits for free. So many people are shocked that these beautiful dogs are in such trouble and we will continue to spread this word by going to festivals around the country and persuade people to

Adopt and not Shop. Every time a dog is adopted it actually saves two dogs, the adopted dog and a new one we can take in.

Can the Public come and visit?

Yes, we always welcome visitors but we ask that they ring first as we are very busy and we like to have time to show people around properly and let them meet our dogs. And of course on as part of our 1st Birthday celebrations we are having an open day on Sunday 19th April and everyone is very welcome. Our last open day was a great success and we hope to go from strength to strength.

If anyone is interested they can contact us on Facebook.

Sera Husky is celebrating its 1st birthday and we were delighted to have a chat with Maurice Enright and Lane Morrissey who are passionate about the service they provide. They are based in Listowel and are open for the public to come along and visit at any time.

Essie Nail Polish €9.99Nothing says spring has sprung more than the colour green. Essie’s hue, the more the merrier, is fresh, fun and fabulous. A simple way to add a bit of spring into your step! For optimal results, don’t forget to use a base and top coat.

Spring’s catwalks were teeming with fine lines and smoky eyes. Benefit’s gel pen liner with an angled tip allows you to define, build and create whatever liner look you’re lusting after. Smudge-proof, water-proof and fool-proof, it’s perfect

for first-timers and artistic designers.

Benefit they’re Real! Push-Up Liner €25

Catrice Ultimate Stay Lipstick €4.99Fiery, fierce lips are in this spring and if you’re looking for a lippie with staying power this is a true bargain beauty buy. Available in an assortment of shades, Catrice’s matt lipstick is both durable and delectable. I’m currently loving number 100 Red Red Shine.

Bourjois Smoky Eyes Trio Eyeshadow €10.49Earth-toned shades are a big trend for spring 2015. Whether you want to embrace the mother-earth look, recreate an Egyptian inspired eye or go dramatic with a difference, Bourjois’ Smoky Eyes Trios are the way to go. There are several palettes available in various earthy shades.

Rimmel Natural Bronzer €7.49Drop the blush this spring and opt for a bronzer instead. Add colour to your cheeks, forehead, nose and chin and shine from the inside out with a healthy glow. Rimmel’s Natural Bronzer is a steady favourite with buildable coverage and no added glitter. Remember to focus on where the sun naturally hits your face to perfect a natural look.

How to be a Natural Goddess this spring without feeling completely nakedThis spring, the catwalks were awash with nature-inspired looks. For me personally, the most captivating of these had to be the bare-face. Yes ladies, it is exactly what you think – no make-up! No eyeliner. No eyeshadow. No mascara. No lipstick. And, drumroll please, no foundation. Absolutely zilch! While some of us may flinch away in fear at the thought of not putting on our face for the outside world, the idea of pure, natural beauty is a wonderful one that is easy to embrace without feeling completely stripped bare. If going completely bare is just too much for you to handle, it is simple to create a natural look with just a few beauty essentials.

BB creams are not a new concept, though they may be about to make a swift resurgence as spring trends take over. Depending on the brand and intent of the producers, some BB creams will give more coverage than others. There are BB’s for all skin types, tones and problem skins. A couple of my favourites include Garnier’s BB cream for oily/combination skin (can work for normal/dry skin also) and Dior’s Diorskin Nude BB Crème.

Mascara can be used to enhance the natural shape and length of your eyelashes. Choose mascara that is specific to your needs. If you have short, stubby lashes, you want a wand and mascara that is going to lengthen and curl your lashes. If you have long, curly lashes, you probably want to get volume rather than length. I recommend Benefit’s Roller Lash mascara for gorgeous curls and L’Oréal’s Volume Million Lashes for utter flutter. Clear mascara works a charm for definition and maximum natural beauty.

Finally, finish your bare look with a lick of clear lip balm. Not only will this add a dewy glow to your pout but it will help keep those puckers nourished and protected. If you’re suffering from dry, chapped lips from the cold weather, try Blistex’s medicated lip balm. Otherwise, choose any lip balm you like. I’m partial to Carmex’s cherry lip balm in the squeeze tube – it glistens perfectly and is just so tasty.

Top-tip: Don’t forget your SPF. It truly is the best anti-aging product.

SWEET POTATO, FETA AND PINE NUT STRUDEL WITH MARK DOE

VEGETARIAN COOKINGVegetarian food is something that I love to cook on a regular basis. Always healthy and tasty, there is so much more to vegetarian food than vegetable curries and lasagane. With the Spring produce finally here there is a huge array on tasty vegetables on their way that means you have plenty of choice to play with when cooking vegetarian. When I eat out I would

often order the vegetarian option for a change, as it is usually a lovely light option. It is great to see food for vegetarians has moved on from years ago where you would often find a plate of steamed vegetables as the only option! This recipe for a sweet potato strudel is one of my favourites from our popular vegetarian class that we run. Give it a go and maybe you will be eating vegetarian food on a regular basis.Happy cooking.

INGREDIENTS450g sweet potato, cut into ¾ inch cubes

Olive oil

80g pine nuts, toasted under a hot grill

250g feta cheese, crumbed

2 tbsp chopped fresh basil

4 spring onions, chopped

1 packet filo pastry sheets

2-3 teaspoons sesame seeds

1. Pre-heat your oven to fan 180°c/gas mark 6/200°c2. Place the sweet potato into a bowl and drizzle wit 1 tbsp olive oil and season with salt and pepper. Toss well and place in a roasting tray. Bake in the oven for approx 20 minutes, until it has softened.3. Allow to cool slightly and place into a bowl.4. Add the feta, basil, and spring onion and season with a little salt and pepper. Mix gently.5. Remove from sheet of the filo and cover the rest with a damp tea towel to prevent drying out.6. Brush each sheet of filo with olive oil and layer them into a pile.7. Spoon the prepared filling at the top of the pastry leaving a 1 inch gap on each side.8. Fold the sides of the pastry into the centre, then tuck in the ends. Carefully roll the strudel and then turn the strudel over and place on a baking tray, seam side down.9. Lightly brush the top with a little more olive oil and sprinkle with the sesame seeds.10. Bake for 25-30 minutes or until the pastry is crisp.

No one is ever fully confident in their body.

For some this may seem like a broad statement, but it is merely a fact that I can state because I am a human being and I literally have an inside view into what it is like.

You can ask any one of us ‘Do you like how you look?’, and we will look at you like you just shot a bunny. If you do eventually get an answer out of us, you will probably put our reluctance down to the fact that we don’t want other people to think that we are too confident rather than the fact that we have no confidence at all.

You can be complimented all your life and you may never believe a single compliment that you have ever received. It seems that it is almost impossible to be cured of the monster that lives inside of your head.

You are probably asking, why the hell can’t we just be happy in our own skin? And trust me there are a million answers to that question.

It may seem like an old answer at this point, but the glossy magazines can be still held as a culprit. This is almost a dated idea now, because really the media can be held responsible for our perception of beauty (but we are complicit as we buy the magazines and view the websites!)

Even after so much protesting and so many arguments about it, magazines still place underweight women, and men in magazines. Even after so

much protesting from regular people and celebrities alike, they are still retouching the photos that they place in magazines.

It’s not something that you can avoid. You can’t avoid the media unless you want to become a hermit and live under a rock for the rest of your life. You walk outside your door and you are immediately hit with a million images of the “perfect” people until you are forced to accept that these

people are ‘normal’. That it is normal to look like this all the time, without a million dollar retouch or a possible eating disorder.

It has gotten worse, at least in the 80’s, there were fit people in magazines. Now a lot of people in all the different campaigns are just underweight, and it is done up to look like beauty . . . even worst, beauty we should all aspire too.

We can sometimes be led to think that the beauty that we see in magazines, this retouched processed beauty, is the only beauty that anyone can ever identify.

And this is why the lack of body confidence is so prominent in our society.

Everyone is beautiful. I know that right now, the mirror is telling you something different, that it is telling you that you need to change. But do you really want to look like you belong in a magazine. That kind of beauty doesn’t exist and we need to stop aiming for it.

But in reality you just need to accept who you are and be happy with that, because you are beautiful. And if you are able to accept that, that ladies and gentleman, is body confidence.

I know that it’s not as simple as just going to Argos or ordering it online, but it will eventually arrive. And sometimes the longer you wait for something, the better it is when you get it.

CONNECT Style HI AGAIN EVERYONE

THE NEXT MONTH CAN BE A BUSY TIME FOR ALL OF YOU ATTENDING CHILDREN’S FIRST HOLY COMMUNIONS. WITH ALL THE TIME SPENT SORTING OUT THE REST OF THE FAMILY, MOTHERS OFTEN LEAVE LITTLE TIME ORGANISING THEIR OWN OUTFIT. OVER THE YEARS, A LOT OF MY CUSTOMERS IN ANNBURYS HAVE ASKED ME WHAT SHOULD I WEAR ON MY CHILD’S COMMUNION DAY. THERE ARE NO SET RULES AND THIS MONTH I WILL BE DISCUSSING DRESSING FOR YOUR CHILD’S SPECIAL DAY.

Firstly and most importantly, dress as comfortably as you can as you will be spending all day in your outfit. Choose fabrics that are machine washable or at least dry-cleanable, I’m not saying you’re a messy lot but the celebrations after will involve food, kids and maybe even a chocolate fountain!

Now whether to go for a dress or trousers. The choice is entirely yours, but as I’ve said before you must feel comfortable in your outfit, feeling comfortable makes you feel more confident and this will make for lots of happy, relaxed photos of the day. As my regular readers know, I believe there is a dress for every shape and size. If you are a dress lady and a lot of women love a dress because they feel it is one complete look, we have a beautiful selection of lace inspired dresses in store this season. The classic lace decorated knee

length dress and matching lace coat can provide just the right amount of warmth for May’s unpredictable weather. It is also a very reusable outfit as the coat can be worn over a cami and trousers or add a headpiece and you are all set for a summer wedding. Think ahead when you are buying your outfit and you will get several uses from it.

If you are happier in a less formal dress, then you can always add some statement accessories to a simple block colour dress for a classic clean look. There are some beautiful colours and prints out there so have some fun experimenting to find a style that suits your personality.

Trousers were big news at this year’s Oscars and can look equally as glamorous and stylish as a dress. Add a blazer/structured jacket and top for that easy to wear elegance. Flowing tops over wide-legged palazzo pants are another great look. There are many different styles of trousers, and light colours can be just as flattering and versatile as black, just ensure you invest in the right cut to suit your shape. I hope these pointers help you enjoy the special day,That’s all for now,

BEST REGARDS,

Danny

KENMARE LACE FESTIVAL

Once again, Kenmare was the focal point of the lace-making world as enthusiasts of this delicate art gathered to take part in the second Kenmare Lace Festival from 19 to 22 March. There were workshops, competitions, lectures, exhibitions and fashion shows, not to mention the lace-bedecked windows of the shops and restaurants all over town. There was a wonderful fashion show in the Park Hotel Kenmare, featuring award-winning Irish designers such as Helen Cody, Tina Griffin and Alice Halliday, and presentations by local boutiques and stores. all the glamorous, beautifully-dressed ladies present found a little goodie bag under their seat. The best-dressed lady award went to Elaine Kelliher from Kilgarvan, who wore a beautiful red dress with matching accessories. This prize was sponsored by Sean Taaffe Hair & Beauty. There are so many people we would like to thank for their help and support: Pobalscoil Inbhear Scéine, the Carnegie Arts Centre, the Park Hotel Kenmare, Sheen Falls Lodge, the local shops and restaurants, Senator Mark Daly, Michael Healy Rae TD, Councillor Dan McCarthy, Noel Crowley, the lacy window artists, the many volunteers who gave up their time to curate our exhibitions, and everyone else who helped in any way towards the success of this, the second Kenmare Lace Festival. The final acknowledgement must go to the organising committee, without whose hard work and dedication the Kenmare Lace Festival would not have happened. So well done, Nora Finnegan, Anne Dunne, Emer Finnegan, Siobhan Thomas and Kathlyn O’Brien – take a bow!

CYCLE AGAINST SUICIDECycle Against Suicide is an initiative started by Irish entrepreneur, Jim Breen. The main objective of the cycle is to raise awareness of the considerable help and supports that are available for anyone battling depression, self-harm, at risk of suicide or those bereaved by suicide. The Cycle Against Suicide community is determined to let people in every corner of the island of Ireland know that.

‘IT’S OK NOT TO FEEL OK AND IT’SABSOLUTELY OK TO ASK FOR HELP’

HOMESTAY - Central to the success of Cycle Against Suicide is the Homestay Programme. People from across the island of Ireland open up their homes to the participants, provide them with a warm meal, a chance to freshen up and a bed for the night. Our feedback has shown that this has been as rewarding for the hosts as it has been for the guests. It’s a chance to lend your support in a very tangible way without having to get on a bike. If you would like to offer homestay accommodation in the greater Tralee area for Sunday night May 3rd during the 2015 cycle, please contact the home stay co-ordinator:

STACK THE ODDS IN YOUR FAVOUR!

Spring is the season of growth and renewal. Often at this time the thought of the patter of tiny

feet crosses couples minds. However, we would build a house with building the right foundation. Planning for pregnancy should be the same. By the time you realise you are pregnant the most crucial stages of formation are underway.

Taking Folic AcidMedical research demonstrates the importance of taking Folic Acid at least a month prior to conceiving. An Over the Counter preparation with 400 ug is adequate for most people. A higher dose of 5mg is recommended for people with BMIs >30 and also for women on certain epilepsy medications.

Fit for Pregnancy?Ideally women should be eating healthily-some foods are not recommended in pregnancy. Foods high in Vitamin A, foods containing raw eggs (mayonnaise) or foods high in mercury should be avoided. Minimise alcohol intake. Ideally cigarette smoking should be complete cut out. Pharmacies and GPs can help you to

look at strategies to quit smoking.Exercise can usually continue as usual-avoiding contact sports such boxing would be sensible. “Eating for two” is an old wives tale.!!! It is vital to try and achieve a normal body weight prior to pregnancy. Once pregnant maintain a healthy weight and eat as healthily as possible. Approximately 12kg is the expected weight gain in a normal pregnancy.

What about any medical problems you already have?If you attend you’re GP or a specialist for a chronic medical problem such as diabetes or epilepsy it would be wise to attend for a “pre pregnancy” chat. Getting diabetes well controlled in advance of pregnancy reduces pregnancy complications. Some medications for Type 2 diabetes are not used in pregnancy so changes or adjustments may be needed. For example, certain epilepsy medications can be associated with problems such as spina bifida or cleft palate in babies. Once again medication changes may be required.Equally, some heart and blood pressure medications are not used routinely in pregnancy so it is always safer to check.

What if you previously had a complicated or “high risk” pregnancy? In some situations problems that occurred in a previous pregnancy can occur again on a second or third occasion. Women who had a premature labour/delivery are at a higher risk of it happening again. PET (previously called toxaemia) may, but does not always recur. Sometimes women find their previous delivery was a bit frightening and fret about having a repeat. Meeting with your consultant in advance of a future pregnancy can be very useful

and can allay unnecessary worries. Women who have had recurrent miscarriages or a late miscarriage could benefit from appropriate support medications or a cervical stitch.

When is too old for pregnancy?A woman’s womb can, theoretically, carry a pregnancy at any age. However, a woman’s eggs age over time. As a result abnormalities such as Down syndrome, miscarriage and fertility issues increase with age. The risk of conditions such as Down syndrome increase significantly from age 40 onwards. Once you are pregnant tests can be performed to assess risk and prepare accordingly.

Key Points• Having a baby should be an exciting time• Advance planning can help to optimise a healthy outcome•Being fit and healthy is an important building block

My favourite accessory has to be the shawl Nothing transforms an outfit as wonderfully as a well-chosen shawl. The surprising thing is that they are not necessarily an expensive item, as a matter of fact, for something that can attract so much positive attention it is sometimes the least expensive part of the outfit. The shawl is so versatile, not just for weddings or special family occasions, but also it is something that can be rolled up and kept in your handbag to throw over your shoulders when the evenings draw in during summer. A couple of things to watch for, patterned shawls look better over a plain colour, keep it simple so that there is not too much going on. Whereas a plain colour will go well with either a single colour or multi patterned outfit. What really works well for weddings etc. is when you can match up your shoes, clutch bag and shawl, a real show stealer. One last thing, sometimes ,depending on the style and material they may tend to slip, just make sure you have a brooch or pin with you to secure in place

I am back again to give you a few more design tips on how to transform your home, without it costing you a fortune. Whether you have just moved or are looking for a quick little home pick-me-up, or perhaps something more significant there are some well known interior design tricks that designers employ that you can easily do with minimal effort and cost. Sometimes the smallest things make the greatest impact. It could be the addition of a mirror, a painting, a lamp or even a

plant. Maybe you want to soften your walls, brighten a room, or add some warmth to your living space. Rest assured i am here to help you!! Throw rugs give warmth and can add great texture, color and personality to your living space. Wooden flooring is practical and easy to maintain but a rug in some areas of a large floor can give that cosyness. You can change your rugs to reflect the seasons using warmer tones and fabrics. Now that we are entering into Spring/Summer there is a great choice of cotton washable rugs which are ideal if you have small children. There is no reason why a home with young children cannot be a stylish one. Plants are inexpensive means to accessorizing your space and adding color and texture. Not only are plants beautiful but many clean household air and balance humidity. They can absorb pollutants and remove harmful gases from the air, no home should be without these wonderful greens! Wicker baskets are an economical and elegant way to add storage to any room. Baskets can be used to store and display books, architectural and decor magazines, toys, towels to name a few. Also wallpaper is very much in trend at the moment, it is relatively inexpensive but can add impact into a living or bedroom space a focal wall can make such a difference in the room. Hope this has inspired you all!!

Mediation is an effective method for resolving workplace disputes. These disputes may involve difficulties between management and staff or between individual employees. The process of mediation can be very effective for many types of disputes, particularly in relation to complaints of bullying and harassment, and has become an increasingly popular alternative to the formal investigation process in recent years.

The Principles of MediationMediation is a process whereby an independent, neutral mediator assists parties to come to an agreement through collaborative engagement. Mediation helps the parties understand the reasons behind the conflict and finds agreed ways of future interaction and behaviour. The most important principles of mediation are:

1. Voluntariness The voluntary commitment of both parties is essential for the mediation’s success - both parties are free to leave the process at any time, at which stage the mediation will end. Both parties are then free to use the other dispute resolution options available to them if they wish.

2. ImpartialityThe mediator remains impartial at all times and does not take any sides or make judgements – any agreements are made by the parties themselves. Mediation is not about disputing parties blaming each other and it is not about who is right or wrong - it is about understanding what has happened, where things may have gone wrong and agreeing on a way forward.

3. ConfidentialityDiscussions during the mediation process and any agreements remain confidential at all times unless both parties agree otherwise.

The Benefits of MediationThere are many benefits of using mediation for resolving disputes, including the following:

• Companies are now recognising mediation as a faster, cheaper alternative to the traditional methods of dispute resolution. • Mediation reduces the risk of losing good employees who may leave their employment due to the stress they face in the workplace. • The process allows the parties to maintain dignity and gain respect for each other in a safe environment - this leads to better relationships between the parties in the long term.At the HR Suite we offer a mediation service to our clients provided by our trained mediators. If you require more information on this service please do not hesitate to contact one of our HR Advisors on 0667102887.

Fáilte romhaibh thar nais a chairde. In this article, I will answer some of the questions that people often ask their dentists. Good oral hygiene means cleaning the mouth well every day, to reduce the chances of tooth decay, gum disease, heart disease and oral cancer.

How do I know if I have not got good oral hygiene? The signs to look out for are bleeding gums, indicating gum disease, especially when cleaning the teeth. This is caused by bacteria in plaque. Plaque can also adhere to the tongue and form a thick film. Cavities in teeth and teeth being easily prone to breaking can also indicate poor oral hygiene. Halitosis or bad breath can also derive from plaque in the mouth.

What are the types of patients who may need extra help with their oral hygiene?

All patients need to maintain good oral health, not only for the mouth, but also for good general medical health. Recent studies have shown that plaque can enter the bloodstream through the gums and lodge on your heart valves or in your coronary arteries causing problems. Good oral health is imperative for good heart health.

Some people may need extra help1. Children under 9 years of age do not have the manual dexterity to brush their teeth properly (or the inclination to do so). These children will need help from an adult to clean teeth effectively. Indeed older children should be supervised to ensure that they are spending enough time cleaning the teeth. A minimum of 3 minutes would be advised for tooth brushing. Many new teeth get decayed within 3 months of eruption due to lack of oral care.2. Pregnancy can lead to several oral hygiene issues. During pregnancy, the immune system cannot deal with bacteria in plaque in the usual fashion. As a result, gums can get quite inflamed and swollen. Such gum disease damages the gums at a much quicker speed than would normally happen. Gum recession leading to tooth sensitivity is often a problem. In severe cases, teeth can become loose. Morning sickness can leave acid on the teeth and prevent normal brushing. All of these things need careful managing. Women should visit their dentist at the start of their pregnancy, so that many of the common problems can be avoided.3. People with cardiac problems, high cholesterol, diabetes or coronary artery problems will need regular dental visits to maintain good oral and general health.4. People who are planning to have joint replacements and cardiac operations also need perfect oral health to prevent bacteria entering the bloodstream in the mouth and causing problems at the operation site.5. People with a physical or mental disability need extra care also. Any carers who are unsure of how to clean the teeth for these patients should seek advice from their dentist. 6. People who smoke and drink alcohol at the same time are more at risk of oral cancer developing. Regular hygiene visits with your dentist can lead to early detection.

32 CONNECT MAGAZINE April 2015

STYLING.There are 5 main trends for the spring/summer season that I am going to focus on. Most of us have items in our wardrobes already, here are some guidelines in how to wear them

1. Stripes are great for a men. They can help broaden or lengthen us as we need it. If like me and you’re broad of chest go for a horizontal stripe or if you need balance like broadening your shoulders go for a horizontal stripe. Remember you always want to look a little broader on the shoulders as it puts us in proportion.

2. Double denim is a trend that should be worn with caution. Never wear the same shade all over. I recommend using lighter shades to broaden and darker shades to slim as necessary.

3. Florals are not just for the girls. Last year saw a big trend of hyper florals for men. They have continued into 2015. Florals are a great way to wear a pattern. The eye doesn’t settle on strong patterns and are great for distracting from problem areas.

4. Red is most definitely the new black this year. Red is a great colour with a shade for everyone. If you have a pink tone to your skin go for orange toned reds. If you have a yellow tone to your skin like I do then go for blue reds.

5. Blue and green is a big colour combo for spring summer. Again like with red trend finding the right shades is key. Pair similar shades of blue and green, clashing colours are best avoided here as you’ll be more a fashion victim rather than trendy.

GROOMING.This month I want to talk about waxing for men. Body hair can be an issue for some men. Shaving is not always an option as regrowth is fast and can be uncomfortable. Waxing offers a slower regrowth and over time the hair grows back less and less. If you want to try waxing at home Nads for men waxing

strips (€11.99, boots) are a good place to start. If you want a professional and discreet waxing service, I recommend going to expose beauty lounge in Mounthawk, Tralee. They offer a back and chest waxing for €50 as well as a terrific aftercare service.

Here we have a list of tips to help you prepare and conquer your upcoming marathon. Whether its you’re first or you’re 51st follow these tips to help you over the 26.2 miles.

Enjoy it. You don’t have to run, you get to run. Enjoy the benefits physically and mentally. Enjoy being with like-minded people and enjoy the great outdoors.

The Long Run. This is one of the training sessions in your schedule that you don’t want to miss. No matter how hectic your week is, always make sure to tick the box for the long run. For

most, the Long Run isn’t about speed or pace. It’s about getting out on the road and running constantly for a long period of time. This is also known as “time on your feet”. It gets the body ready for the stress and demand of the 26.2 miles. The Long Run usually ranges from 20 to 22 miles. It is very important that you practise any nutrition strategies that you may be planning for your marathon in your long runs. For example, timing of gels. It’s a good practise to take a gel after a certain amount of time all the way through the race. For example taking a gel every 30/35 minutes. However everyone is different and you need to find what works best for you.

Nutrition. As the miles add up, the food you eat and the quality of the food you eat becomes more important. We highly recommend you eat high quality nutrient dense food. Fill your

diet with good carbohydrate, protein and fat sources. You burn a huge amount of calories running, whether it’s a speed/tempo session or out for a long run. Those calories need replacing. Eat and refuel as soon as you can after training sessions, it also may be worth looking at recovery drinks. It’s really hard to recommend a company/brand as once again you need to find which ones work best for you.

Recovery: Train hard, recover harder. Recovery from training sessions begins the minute that you finish a run. For example you are to run 10 miles. Run 10 miles but run another half mile at

a slow pace to cool you down. Stretch and foam rolling as soon as possible while sipping on water and/or a recovery drink is a good idea. Recovery is something that is hugely neglected especially after long runs. Ideally have your post training meal prepared before you head out training. Continue foam rolling and stretching even in the hours after your finished running. Try compression clothing to see if it works for you, it can encourage and assist with blood flow and removal of any lactate build up in sore legs. Again test these out, see if they work for you!

Race Day: •Prepare your kit the night before. Have everything laid out, put your number on your top and its a few small things you needn’t

worry about the next morning.•Carb up. Fill up on nutrient dense carbohydrates the days leading into the race. But be careful not to over eat as it will leave you feeling sluggish and lethargic. •Don’t try anything new. Should I eat this or should I eat that? If you haven’t eaten it the night before a run before don’t do it before race day. And the same goes the morning of the race, don’t try any new foods. Eat the same meal you would before a long training run. Consistency is key. This will help you avoid any unwanted tummy problems on race day also.•Use the bathroom. Simple one here guys, use the bathroom 20 minutes before the race starts. You don’t want to waste 5 minutes stopping during the race.•Don’t start too fast. Everyone gives this tip but never applies or listens to it. Understandably you will be bursting with energy and adrenaline at the start line but pace yourself. A fast pace early in the marathon will eat you up later on. 26.2 miles is a long way, pace yourself. All the people that flew past you after 2 or 3 miles, you will pass them again towards the later stages of the race. •Trust the Training. If you have been honest with your training over the past few months chances are you will have a good race and you could possible get that Personal Best. However if you skimped on training you may suffer on race day. Preparation is key; the hard work is done; now go and enjoy it.

Moments in SportPat Dunworth – Ready for Road:

The Quick Fire Section:What is your earliest sporting memory? The 1976 Olympics was probably my first introduction to sport. It was the games of the great Mark Spitz who dominated in the pool and of course we had the Irish interest with the likes of Eamon Coughlan.

What is your best sporting moment in your own sport? It has to be seeing Denis win the National Championships in 2008. He was in great form on the day and everything worked out perfectly. Seeing a family member win an All-Ireland title in any sport is the ultimate joy.

What is your favourite sporting moment outside of your own sport? As a huge Black and Amber fan it has to be seeing the Stacks win their All Ireland title in 1979. I was at that game and it was a wonderful occasion. This

year’s team made a great effort to get to the final but sadly just came up short. However the still gave us some great pleasure.

What in life gets you excited?

There is nothing like being involved in the big days in your sport so the likes of the National Championships and of course the Ras and Ras Mumhan. Being in the peloton or the cavalcade is the most exciting place in the world!

What in life annoys or upsets you?

Greed – it has destroyed the country.Have you a favourite colour? It has to be green – the colour of our racing strip!!

Noise or sound that excites you? Classical Musical – anyone that comes into our Kingdom Endurance shop you will hear the classical music playing. It

soothes away the pressures of the day.

Noise or sound that annoys you? Shouting from the side-lines. There is no need for it. Supporters should encourage and support all sports persons. They put in huge efforts.

Finally 4 people, dead or alive, that you would invite to your dinner party?

I have a wide political interest and a love of people who make a difference so it would have to be Abraham Lincoln, Mother Theresa, Ghandi and Nelson Mandela. I think that would make an interesting table!!

Pat Dunworth is the MD of Kingdom Endurance Sports and the Team

Manager of the newly formed Moda Kingdom Endurance Kerry cycling team. The team has been put together to give the elite Kerry cyclists the best opportunity to compete on the National stage.

“With the way cycling has been going clubs are no longer able to take on the big teams who have all the back-up necessary. Clubs have done great and are continuing to do so but really to win the big races there needs to the full back-up of staff and facilities. That is why we put together the team and have attracted some high profile sponsors including title sponsors Moda, one of the biggest bike companies in the world, Reamda, a Tralee company, Rubina Tyres plus local support from the likes of Sean Og’s B&B, Moriarty Engineering, McDonalds and Ballyroe Heights Hotel.

“The sporting public will be able to see the team in the forthcoming Kerry Group Ras Mumhan which runs from April 3rd to 6th. We look forward taking on the countries best on the roads of Kerry so look out for the latest Boys in Green and give them a cheer!”

THIS ISSUE SUZANNE HAS JUST ARRIVED BACK HAVING TRAVELLED TO THE EUROPEAN LAUNCH IN BARCELONA TO SEE WHAT CHANGES MAZDA HAVE MADE TO THE CX-5 FOR 2015

On the outside the changes to the Mazda CX-5 are subtle – the taillights have been revamped, LED headlights installed and a new grille with grey fins, gives the impression of a bolder front end. The fact that the changes aren’t drastic is no surprise given that the CX-5 is Mazda’s bestselling car in Europe – why fix what isn’t broken?

Most of the upgrades to the CX-5 have been made inside the cabin. The interior has been completely changed with a new dashboard, redesigned seating and full connectivity – in fact a 7” touchscreen display now comes as standard. The materials used have a premium but durable feel so it should stand the test of time and everything is within easy reach of the driver. Upgrading to the “Platinum” spec will

also get you a Bose sound system. On the road the CX-5 hasn’t lost its appeal – the suspension has been adjusted to improve comfort and smooth out bumps on the road but it hasn’t lost any of its handling ability. Overall it’s a fun car to drive and despite being very spacious it’s easy to manoeuvre in tight spaces. The Mazda CX-5 is available in both front and all-wheel drive with two engine options – a 2.0l 165PS Petrol and a 2.2L Diesel in both 150PS and 175PS. Prices start at €27,995 for the petrol and the diesel starts at €30,495. For more information visit www.mazda.ie
