Meal Delivery

HELP SPREAD THE JOY OF CHRISTMAS. On Saturday, December 3, 2016, members of Emanuel’s Lutheran Church will deliver delicious hot turkey dinners to our members and friends who would appreciate a hot meal. If you know of anyone who would benefit from this ministry please call the Church office at 379-5046 to let them know their name and address by Tuesday, November 15. Drivers are also needed for the dinner deliveries and youth to deliver the dinners to the door. If you would like to help, please call the church office 379-5046.

FROM THE PASTOR Dear Friends in Christ,

The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, at its most recent Churchwide Assembly in August, called on Lutherans to remember veterans, military and families in prayer

on the Sunday closest to the Veterans’ Day holiday. So here at Emanuel’s on Sunday, November 13 we will have special prayers and litanies to remember before God the

sacrifice of veterans and families.

The new “elcachaps.com” web site contains these thoughts: “Veterans Day afford us the opportunity to remember the military service and sacrifice by many in our

congregation and community who protect peace and our freedoms (including religious faith) and foster safety for all. …(We)…join millions of people to say thank you by

recognizing these community servants and extending a welcoming support where

needed.” To these words I say “Amen!”

Please continue to pray for the work of the Call Committee. Our Emanuel’s Vision 2020 strategic plan gives us a great road map for the way ahead, and of course

calling your next pastor is one of those important milestones. It’s not that I’m overeager for the Call Committee to work me out of a job, but from the beginning I

have been clear that my mission here is to assist you through the transition process in preparation for the called pastor who will come after.

Also, let’s lift up our nation in prayer as we approach the Presidential election. There

seems to be more emotionalism and negativity this year, more so than I recall in past elections. May we put aside partisanship after the election and pray for a greater

unity to somehow come about. I pray through it all God would use our nation to be a beacon of hope and advocate for justice in the world.

Finally and moving through the month, can you believe that Thanksgiving will be here soon and then Advent starts the Sunday following!? Where did the time go?

Sincerely and in Christ,

Pastor Paul Cannon

VOLUME 15 NO. 11 November 2016 P.3 P.2 ISSUE 11 COUNCIL PRESIDENT’S NOTES by Karen Weinstein

Emanuel’s 2020—Amazingly, we are already coming to the end of the 1st year in our transition process. Much has happened and much is happening during one of the busiest times of the church year. As I participate in the extremely organized Ladies Aid process of baking coffee cakes for their annual bazaar which occurs this year on Tuesday, November 8th, I see the dedication and commitment of volunteers that have kept the doors of Emanuel’s open over the past 146 years. This year, 576 coffee cakes will be baked over 4 successive Mondays. Over the years the Ladies have each taken over a part of the process which has resulted in an extremely efficient assembly line capable of baking 144 coffee cakes by noon each Monday at which time they are available for sale. Over the years, the recipe has been tweaked, brand names of ingredients have changed, volunteers have come and gone, but the efficient process continues as the experienced volunteers bring the new volunteers quickly up to speed and any needed changes are discussed and a consensus is reached. There may be a hiccup if the usual worker in charge of a process is absent, but another worker automatically steps in to cover and, ultimately, only a few minutes may be added to the process. Over the years, the Ladies Aid Bazaar has used the coffee cakes as a focal point for their event which brings in funds used to support the Seguin Community charitable efforts such as the Christian Cupboard and world ministries along with supporting the needs of Emanuel’s and the Day School. The ongoing dedication, commitment and experience of Emanuel’s church members are the required ingredients to bring about success as we move forward to reach the goal of Being the church God is calling us to be. Emanuel’s has been known for the Polka Service and Sausage supper (this year on October 30th) which provides a service to Seguin and the surrounding community by donating the proceeds received to the Christian Cupboard in addition to proclaiming God’s love through worship. As with the Ladies Aid coffee cake project, the same group of volunteer members, over the years, had created an efficient assembly line process. This year, the Covenant Sunday School class has graciously stepped in. Ingredients and workers may change, but the process continues based on the experience gained from previous years of successful outcomes created by member volunteers. Change. Being open to change is a key ingredient in reaching our goals as created in the Emanuel’s 2020 Strategic Plan. We need to be open to build on the old, accept the new and adapt old and new to meet the needs of Emanuel’s. Moving forward, the Call committee and church Council have met with Sue Briner of the Synod. Knowing that we will be able to use the results of the Transition Team’s efforts in developing the Mission, Vision and Strategic Plan to expedite the Call Process was extremely encouraging. It is hoped that the Ministry Site Profile will be completed October 26th by the Call Committee. This will be submitted to the Synod and Pastors seeking a Call will be able to evaluate how they might fit in Emanuel’s strategic plan. On December 17th, the Synod will facilitate a “Healthy Congregations” workshop from about 9 am to 3 pm. Attendance is mandatory for Call Committee members. Council members are encouraged to attend and all Emanuel’s members are welcome. A strategic plan goal is to increase our visibility within Seguin and the surrounding community as many in the Seguin area do not know Emanuel’s exists. To this end, Emanuel’s Church and Day School are collaborating to enter a float in the Seguin nighttime Christmas Parade on December 1st. The theme of Neighborhood of Faith will be used. Campbell Floors is providing the trailer. Now we need volunteers to create houses, provide ideas, assemble the float and actually participate in the parade. Contact the church if you are interested. In response to the goal of developing a facilities Master Plan. Multiple architectural firms have been contacted. Site visits by these firms are planned. This will play into Budget Planning when the Council meets November 5th for their first meeting specifically on budget (Council members only). Emanuel’s is a family whose members, both young and old, have a wealth of experience. As Proverbs 16:9 states, “We can make our plans, but the Lord determines our steps.” Be open to what God is calling us to be. How can you make a difference as a family member whose gifts are need to create a vibrant home and community for God’s people?

Emanuel’s Lutheran Grief and Loss Support Ministry

Grief is the normal reaction to the loss of a loved one or to a major change in one’s lifestyle. Grief is natural and necessary as we continue to learn to adapt with the changes in our life; it is a process of adjustment, reconciliation, and healing. There is no one way to grieve or a particular time frame in which we accomplish this task. But we can benefit when we come together to share our experiences.

Emanuel’s Lutheran Grief and Loss Support Ministry is available to anyone who has lost a loved one to death or who has gone through a major change in their lifestyle. We want to provide emotional and/or spiritual support for anyone who needs our help.

Please contact Donna Simmons, the Grief and Loss Support

Coordinator at 830-379-5046 for more information.

DEADLINES Information must be in the office by 8:00 am Tuesday mornings for bulletins.

Day School News

Whew! October is over! We had a very busy month. Our Pre-K4 class won the Grand Champion ribbon at the Guadalupe County Fair Arts and Crafts show while Pre-K3 and the Toddlers won 1st Place ribbons. The Day School held its annual Bake Sale fundraiser, and sang during our church service on October 23rd. Thank you to everyone who supported us through our Bake Sale and made the Day School families feel so welcome in our service. Thanks to your generosity, we collected a whopping $1837.00 in donations after the service. We had a great time and hope you, did, also! Our last October event, the costumed Halloween parade, will take place on Monday, October 31, with little ghosts and goblins (and Super-Heroes) traipsing through downtown Seguin. It’s wonderful to be in a small town and enjoy the hometown support from local businesses and City government offices. Thank you, Seguin! November will be “quiet” compared to October, though we will be preparing for the December Holiday Stroll Parade on December 1st, learning songs for the Ladies Aid luncheon on December 7th and practicing for our Christmas play on Thursday, December 15th. We hope to continue the “tradition” we began last year by working with the Emanuel’s Music Ministry for our Christmas play. Last year we had a wonderful time with the flute, violin and choir joining with us. Thank you to everyone in the Music Ministry at Emanuel’s for your support. Happy Thanksgiving to everyone from all of us at the Day School!
