MARCH VOLUME IX 2014 Well, we have had our third weigh in and have some encouraging results. It was fun to get to talk with you guys as you came by to weigh in and report your mileage. Some have really lost a lot of weight and some have lost a little weight. There are some who haven’t lost any weight but who are turning in good mileage. I want to reemphasize that this program is not just about weight loss but about making good decisions in relation to your health by choosing to eat higher quality foods and exercising. I imagine most of you are just feeling better than you did 2 months ago. Well you have 4 more months to continue to improve during this competition and a lifetime after that. My hope for each of you is that you improve your quality of life as a result of this fun competition. I believe being involved in a program like this adds accountability and fun through competition. It is a joy hearing about your adventures on your health journey. Please read the below excerpts from The CrossFit Journal Training Guide concerning excess processed carbohydrates in your diet. There’s an increasing awareness that excess carbohydrates play a dominant role in chronic diseases like obesity, coronary heart disease, many cancers, and diabetes. This understanding comes directly from current medical research. Amazingly, the near universal perception that dietary fat is the major culprit in obesity has no scientific foundation. The mechanism by which excess carbohydrate causes disease state is known as “hyperinsulinemia”. Hyperinsulinemia is the chronic and acute elevation of insulin as a result of habitual consumption of excess carbohydrate. Though frightening, the diseases brought about through hyperinsulinemia can easily be avoided by minimizing carbohydrate consumption – specifically carbohydrate that gives substantial rise to blood sugar and consequently insulin levels. Avoid high glycemic foods and you’ll avoid many, if not most, of the ills associated with diet. High glycemic foods, or “bad foods”, are typically starchy, sweet, or processed foods like bread, pasta, rice, potato, grains, and desserts. A simple thought from the CrossFit Journal – Eat meat, vegetables, nuts and seeds, some fruit, little starch and no sugar. Avoid processed food! Congratulations Jeremy Stiff - Month 2 Winner!

MARCH V O L U M E I X 2014

Well, we have had our third weigh in and have some encouraging results.

Though frightening, the diseases brought about through hyperinsulinemia can easily be avoided by minimizing carbohydrate

consumption – specifically carbohydrate that gives substantial rise to blood sugar and consequently insulin levels.
