Every year Language World brings teachers together to celebrate the very best in languages education, to learn from one another and to share our successes and concerns. 2013 will be no exception as we consider how best to approach some of the big changes coming our way - the introduction of statutory primary languages from 2014, yet another new secondary curriculum and plans to overhaul the exams system to name the most obvious. Our programme this year has a new focus of primary languages, considers the impact of the new curricula, looks at the thorny issues around transition, revisits grammar, seeks out the best ideas from secondary practice, takes a peek into the world of neuroscience and raises the question of which languages we should be teaching in 21st century multilingual Britain.
I hope you enjoy your time here and leave feeling refreshed, inspired and ready to take on whatever challenges 2013 is going to throw at us!

SPANISH THEME DAYS
A Spanish theme day resource for the whole school to enjoy

SPANISH THEME DAYS
Engaging children on a whole school level to participate in fun,
worthwhile language learning activities, whilst still making the work
topical, can be a time consuming and challenging project. With La Jolie
Ronde’s series of French and Spanish ‘Themed days’ the work is already
planned and prepared giving all teachers across the school the support
required to provide a comprehensive base for a day’s work.
Each theme begins with an assembly which brings all pupils together to
introduce the topic in a thought-provoking and fun manner. The children
return to their classes where they undertake a variety of scaffolded
and carefully supported activities that develop their language acquisition
skills. The children then return to a celebratory assembly at the end
of the day to share their successes, talk about their activities and
experiences and showcase their developing language skills.
Each resource includes:• A collection of easy-to-use, fun play-based curriculum linked activities
• Activities that are split by age: 5 to 7, 7 to 9 and 9 to 11 year olds
• A Resource CD of coloured and black & white images, lists
of vocabulary, templates for flash cards, games and activities,
transcripts & translations of songs and texts and when
appropriate real life DVD clips!• An Audio CD of songs and sounds recorded by native speakers
for correct accent and intonation• Photocopiable Teachers Notes with CD transcripts

Message from Ann SwarbrickALL President 2012 – 2013
It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to Language World 2013 and to the beautiful city of Nottingham. We are delighted to be here at Nottingham Trent University where we hope you will soak up the atmosphere, be creative and enjoy the delights of this
central Nottingham location. We are extremely pleased that the Vice Chancellor of the University will address the conference and we thank the staff here for all their support.
This is a conference for everyone involved in languages education. Every year we welcome people from across all sectors and from all languages backgrounds. This is where you meet colleagues with a common interest – languages teaching and learning. We have put together a programme full of variety and inspiration. We had a huge number of submissions and we thank everyone for their suggestions, comments and contributions. There will be something for everyone here and I would like to thank conference contributors for their work in providing us with a high quality programme. This year we have carefully designed the programme so that those interested in a particular sector, such as primary languages for example, will be able to put together for themselves a programme suited to their interests and experience.
We would like to thank our sponsors this year including CfBT Education Trust, Sanako, Language Perfect, OCR, Routledge, Vocab Express, Network for Learning Languages East Midlands and the British Academy. Thank you also to our corporate members and our exhibitors. We hope you will enjoy the exhibition and make this a major part of your conference activity.
We are working hard to enrol new members at this time of change for languages. We would like to say ‘Hello and welcome,’ to first time conference goers. Relax and enjoy being amongst languages lovers from all over the country.

The European Journal of Language Policy / Revue européenne de politique linguistique is a peer-reviewed journal published by Liverpool University Press, in association with the Conseil européen pour les langues / European Language Council.
EJLP addresses major developments in language policy from a European perspective. The journal’s primary focus is on Europe, but it is alert to policy developments in the wider world.
The journal invites proposals or manuscripts of articles studying any aspect of language policy, and any aspect of the area of languages for which policies may need to be developed. It particularly welcomes proposals that provide greater understanding of the factors which contribute to policy-making, and proposals that examine the effects of particular policies on language learning or language use.
EJLP also presents policy documents, particularly where these contribute to debates and decision-making on language policy. It invites suggestions for such documents.
