Maastricht – TraditionThe Stainless Steel World 2011 Conference & Expo will be held in the MECC (Maastricht Expo and Congress Centre) in Maastricht, in the south of The Netherlands, close to where the borders of the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany meet. Maastricht is a city with a charming yet international character and with a definite Burgundian atmosphere. The city owes all this to its rich history and its position on the crossroads of different Euro-pean cultures, languages and trade routes. All these factors make Maastricht an ideal meeting point for the “Euregion” and beyond. If you would like to explore the city, Maastricht has an excellent bus service. City buses run about every five minutes between Maastricht city centre, Maastricht Central Station, the conference hotels and the MECC. The MECC is a modern conference centre hosting seminars, conferences, exhibitions and other events of all shapes and sizes. It is one of the most modern and dynamic congress centres of Europe. All conference rooms are located in the MECC Euro Centre, accessible directly, and for delegates only, from the Expo Hall. For more information: www.mecc.nl
Advance Conference
ProgrammeMessagefromtheChairI am very pleased to act as chair for the Seventh Stainless Steel World Conference & Expo. As an end-user I am frequently involved in selecting the best material for the job. Often this turns out to be some grade of stainless steel or another type of CRA. Stainless steels provide the required strength combined with good corrosion resistance to our processes. This is needed to preserve equipment integrity, but also to prevent contamination of our products, specially important in our life science business. As sustainability is also becoming increasingly important throughout industry, the use of stainless steels is beneficial. These can provide very long equipment lifetimes and often very little maintenance. When looking at lifetime extension of aging plants the stainless steel equipment and piping is usually not your first worry. Finally, the high degree of recycling

of stainless steel (>90%) is a strong argument for sustainability. For new equipment, quality assurance in a global market is a challenge. The need for cost competitiveness has already driven alloying elements to the lower limits of the specifications, sometimes affecting applications at the end-user’s location. This aspect underlines the need for a high knowledge level throughout the supply chain. But at the same time there is a Western World trend that fewer and fewer people are available for keeping up, let alone improving, the knowhow on stainless steel.I look on the Stainless Steel World conference as an important means to promote knowledge on the handling of stainless steels. I very much look forward to seeing you at the event and hope that you will take this opportunity to get involved, share experiences, discuss and learn, both for your own personal benefit and for that of your company.

An Introduction to Stainless Steel
About Alan HarrisonBorn in Liverpool, Alan moved to Sheffield to study as a metallur-gist in 1972 and has remained there ever since. He has worked in the Sheffield steel industry in various roles, firstly in heavy forgings, transferring to stainless steel in 1989. After a period out of the metal-lurgical field, he became the Technical Advisor to the British Stainless Steel Association in 2006. In this role he provides advice to the whole supply chain in the UK stainless steel industry, including architects, engineers, designers, stockholders and fabricators. He developed the Stainless Steel Starter Workshop on which the Stainless Steel World 2011 Introduction to Stainless Steel course is based.
Course to be held on Tuesday, November 29th, 10:00 a.m. - 15:30 p.m. Lecturer: Alan Harrison, BSSA, UK. Why is stainless steel used for so many applications? How many grades of stainless steel are there? Can it corrode? Is it magnetic? What does a test certificate mean?If you are involved in the stainless steel industry and need to improve your basic knowledge of this versatile material, this course is for you. In less than one day, you will learn how to impress people at dinner parties with your new knowledge of:
Why is stainless steel stainless?Who invented it? Why is it so important in the modern world? What are the main types of stainless steels? What are the ingredients of stainless steels? Why and how does stainless steel corrode? What are its mechanical properties? How do I read a test certificate? What is a megapascal or a N/mm2?How do I select the correct grade? How do I optimise the properties of stainless steel? Why are duplex steels and ferritic steels the current “flavours of the month”?
Perhaps the ‘dinner party’ is a little optimistic but you will be able to speak more knowledgably to your customers and suppliers about stainless steels. In other words, this course will help you to do your job better.Based on a well proven formula first used in the UK, this course uses a mixture of presentation, video material and group work to explain the key features of stainless steel. It is ideal for sales, marketing, purchasing, finance and production personnel.

It is ideal for sales, marketing, purchasing, finance, production personnel, and will help you to answer the questions: Why is stainless steel stainless? Who invented it? Why is it so important in the modern world? What are the main types of stainless steels? What are the ingredients of stainless steels? Why and how does stainless steel corrode? What are the mechanical properties? How do I read a test certificate? What is a megapascal or a N/mm2? How do I select the correct grade? How do you optimise its properties? Why are duplex steels and ferritic steels currently so popular?

Moderator: Workshop:
Michael Renner (Bayer Technology Services, Germany) Deployment of Lean Duplex
Moderator: Workshop:
François Dupoiron (Total Petrochemicals, France), Andrew Leonard (BP, UK) Quality Control in the Supply Chain
The workshop will deal with all commercial aspects of the demand and supply side of the stainless steel industry. Structured in modules of 20 min., each beginning with a brief presentation by Marcus Moll (or co-moderator), the sessions will then be further opened up to Q&A sessions.Topics to be covered include:(1) Basics, market volumes, and raw materials(2) Developments in major end-user segments(3) Focus on tubes and pipes(4) Focus on BRIC countries
Why are there so many new duplex grades? Is this a ploy of manufacturers to create more revenu, or is there a genuine need for new grades? Do end-users know enough about the capabilities of these grades? How can manufacturers get information across in the best possible way to customers?Do the grades live up to their claims: theory vs. practice in various application fields?
How do we continue to maintain standards and control quality in the supply chain in an ever changing marketplace?Standards which are explicit in developed market regions are not necessarily implicit in emerging markets. How should this challenge be tackled and how can results be guaranteed?Due to the low costs race in developed markets, how can we ensure that alloy qualities are maintained? Is it possible to achieve a more global standardization?A discussion between suppliers and end users, developed and emerging markets
