Mons. Massimo Palombella è nato a Torino nel 1967. È stato ordinato Sacerdote per la Congregazione Salesiana nel 1996. Ha compiuto gli studi di filosofia e teologia, conseguendo il Dottorato di Ricerca in Teologia Dogmatica e gli studi musicali con i Maestri Luigi Molfino, Valentín Miserachs Grau, Gabriele Arrigo e Alessandro Ruo Rui, diplomando-si in Musica Corale e Composizione.

Fondatore e Maestro Direttore del Coro Interuniver-sitario di Roma, ha lavorato nella Pastorale Universi-taria della Diocesi di Roma dal 1995 al 2010, curan-do, in qualità di Maestro di musica, tutti gli incontri del Santo Padre con la Cultura Universitaria.

È stato docente di Teologia Sacramentaria, Escato-logia e“Musica e Liturgia” alla Pontificia Universi-tà Salesiana fino al 2011; insegna al Conservatorio Guido Cantelli di Novara - nel biennio di specia-lizzazione in Musica Sacra - Composizione per la Liturgia, Polifonia Romana e Legislazione della Musica Sacra.

È stato inoltre docente di Linguaggi della Musica all’Università La Sapienza di Roma; al Conservatorio di Torino e al Pontificio Istituto di Musica Sacra in

Choirmaster Mgr. Massimo Palombella was born in Turin in 1967. He was ordained a priest for the Salesian Congregation in 1996. He studied philo-sophy and theology, receiving his Doctorate in Dogmatic Theology and his musical studies with Luigi Molfino, Valentin Miserachs Grau, Gabriele Arrigo and Alexander Ruo Rui, receiving a diplo-ma in Choral Music and Composition.

Founder and Director of the University Choir in Rome, he worked in Pastoral Ministry of the Dio-cese of Rome from 1995 to 2010, taking care, as a music teacher, all meetings of the Holy Father with University culture.

He was Professor of Sacramental Theology, Escha-tology and “Music and Liturgy at the Pontifical Salesian University until 2011; he teaches at the Conservatory Guido Cantelli of Novara - for the two-year specialization in Sacred Music - Compo-sition for the Liturgy, Roman polyphony and Legi-slation of Sacred Music.

cred Music in Rome he taught Liturgy. From 1998 to 2010 he directed the liturgical music magazine Armonia di Voci (Harmony of Voices), Published by ElleDiCi.

On October 16, 2010, he was appointed by Pope Benedict XVI Director of Pontifical Musical Chorus of the Sistine Chapel and reconfirmed in 2015 by Pope Francis. He is a member, as an expert, of the National Liturgical Office of the Italian Bishops’ Conference. On January 14, 2017 Pope Francis ap-pointed him Consultor of the Congregation for Di-vine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments.

With both the Inter-University Choir of Rome, which he directed until 2011, and with the Sistine Pontifical Musical Chorus of the Sistine Chapel he has to his credit many concerts in Italy and in the world and a large number of CD recordings and DVDs recorded with the publisher ElleDiCi, with the Vatican Publishing House and with the record label Deutsche Grammophon, with whom he has won the Echo Klassik Award for the CD “Cantate Domino. The Sistine Chapel Choir and the Music of the Popes” (2015).

Urbe ha insegnato Liturgia. Dal 1998 al 2010 ha diretto la Rivista di Musica per la Liturgia Armonia di Voci, dell’Editrice ElleDiCi.

Il 16 ottobre 2010 è stato nominato da Papa Bene-detto XVI Maestro Direttore della Cappella Musicale Pontificia “Sistina” e riconfermato nel 2015 da Papa Francesco. È componente, in qualità di esperto, della Consulta dell’Ufficio Liturgico Nazionale della Conferenza Episcopale Italiana. Il 14 gennaio 2017 Papa Francesco lo ha nominato Consultore della Congregazione per il Culto Divino e la disciplina dei Sacramenti.

Sia con il Coro Interuniversitario di Roma, che ha diretto fino al 2011, che con la Cappella Musicale Pontificia “Sistina” ha al proprio attivo numerosi concerti in Italia e nel mondo ed un’ampia serie di registrazioni di CD e DVD incisi con l’editrice El-leDiCi, con la Libreria Editrice Vaticana e con l’e-tichetta discografica Deutsche Grammophon, con la quale ha vinto il premio Echo Klassik per il CD “Cantate Domino. La Cappella Sistina e la musica dei Papi” (2015).

La Cappella Musicale Pontificia “Sistina” è la più antica formazione corale del mondo ancora in at-tività. Nel periodo rinascimentale furono canto-ri della Cappella Sistina, tra gli altri, Guillaume Dufay, Josquin Desprès, Cristóbal de Morales, Ja-cob Arcadelt, Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina e Gregorio Allegri.

La sfida del Concilio Vaticano II in ambito musicale ha reso necessaria un’analisi approfondita e critica delle fonti e la recezione oculata di quanto oggi ci ha consegnato la ricerca scientifica circa la musica rinascimentale. Ciò ha permesso un intelligente e doveroso dialogo con la modernità per trovare stra-de che traducano, con cognizione di causa, il segno grafico in segno sonoro.

Questo processo ha condotto la Cappella Musicale Pontificia “Sistina” a rivisitare ormai da qualche anno un certo modo di cantare atto a produrre for-ti e possenti “suoni basilicali”. La grande emotività di una massa sonora che canta “in voce” per riem-pire di suono le volte di una Basilica è sostituita dalla raffinata percezione del testo, dalla resa emo-tiva ed espressiva della parola attraverso il suono,

The Pontifical Musical Chorus of the Sistine Chapel is the oldest choir in the world still in existence. Du-ring the Renaissance, singing in the Sistine Chapel Choir were, among others, Guillaume Dufay, Jo-squin Desprès, Cristóbal de Morales, Jacob Arca-delt, Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina, Gregorio Allegri.

The challenge of the Second Vatican Council in the area of music necessitated a thorough analysis and criticism of sources and the careful reception of what, today, has given us scientific research about the music of the Renaissance. This enabled an intel-ligent and proper dialogue with modernity to find ways to knowledgeably translate the graphic sign to the sound sign.

This process led the Pontifical Musical Chorus of the Sistine Chapel to revisit, for the past several years, a certain singing style capable of producing strong and mighty “basilical sounds”. The great emotion of a mass sound singing “in voice” and fil-ling the vaults of a Basilica with sound is replaced by fine perception of the text, the emotional and expressive rendering through sound, of the dia-

dalle relazioni dialettiche emergenti dal linguaggio contrappuntistico inteso come componente intel-lettuale mossa dagli affetti.

Oggi il coro, diretto dal Maestro Massimo Palom-bella, è composto da 20 cantori adulti stabili e da circa 35 ragazzi cantori (Pueri Cantores) preparati dal Maestro Marcos Pavan, coadiuvato dal Maestro Michele Marinelli.

La Cappella Musicale Pontificia prosegue così il suo già lungo cammino come coro personale del Papa scoprendo oggi anche una vocazione “ecumenica” che la conduce a lavorare con i più prestigiosi cori del mondo in un dialogo tra Confessioni Cristiane che cerca di ricomporre nell’arte ciò che è stato se-parato da vicende storico-politiche.

La “Sistina” è impegnata periodicamente in tournée internazionali. Con la direzione dell’attuale Maestro ha iniziato a incidere in esclusiva con Deutsche Gram-mophon, la più prestigiosa etichetta discografica per quanto compete la musica classica, e ha vinto il pre-mio Echo Klassik per il CD Cantate Domino (2015).

Today the choir, conducted by Massimo Palombel-la, consists of 20 stable adult singers and about 35 boy singers (Pueri Cantores) trained by Marcos Pavan assisted by Michele Marinelli. The Pontifical Musical Chorus continues its already long journey as the Pope’s personal choir, also discovering to-day an “ecumenical” vocation leading the choir to work with the world’s most prestigious choirs in a dialogue between Christian denominations that seeks to recompose in art what has been separated by historical-political affairs.

The “Sistine” is engaged periodically in interna-tional tours. Under the current director, the choir began recording exclusively with Deutsche Gram-mophon, the most prestigious record label for clas-sical music, and has won the Echo Klassik Award for the CD Cantate Domino (2015).
