Secondary memory
• Need for persistent storage– Data to be used later– Data to be shared
• Non volatile storage device

Storage
Robotic Tape Storage
Optical Storage

Magnetic Tapes
• Rapid sequential access• Compact and easy to store• Cheaper than disks• excellent for archiving• Most are 1/ 2 inch wide, 2400 ft in length (range
from 300 to 3600 ft).

Secondary Storage Devices - Magnetic Tapes
• Organization of data on the magnetic tapes:– consists of 9 parallel tracks, one track for each
bit in a byte plus one parity bit. It is used to check the validity of the data.
– The tape consists of a series of 1-byte slices or frames
frame
9 tracks

SOLID STATE DRIVES (SSDs)- The data storage market saw the value in this only in 2007.
- Overall, when compared to a HDD, SSDs are proven to be much faster, safer and efficient.
- SSD has no moving parts. Nothing moves, so no heat is produced. Also no noise.
- SSD consumes almost no power.
- Market analysts see great potential for price decrease.
- SSDs can survive in extreme conditions.
- HDD cannot compete with SSD’s compact size and quick response time.
- Lastly, SSDs do not crash.

Team CW - 10ptsDiscuss where are we going with data storage needs.
Discuss the implications of storing data on the cloud.
Discuss the consequences of data loss keeping different types of applications in mind.
Bring out the importance of backing up data. What are the pros & cons of backups.• In your team build your discussion, present to whole group.
