Introducing Compound Word AdditionBefore using Compound Word Addition at a center, explore compound words with your students. Have themhelp you decode compounds by breaking them into twowords. Ask open-ended questions, for example: Who cantell me what a mailbox is? What two small words areadded together to make mailbox? Then, analyze how thetwo smaller words, mail and box, work together to createthe meaning of the compound.

Look at some of the compound words depicted in theLearning Deck Cards with the group. Write one of thewords and ask a volunteer to draw a line between the twowords that form the compound. Introduce students tothe Practice Mats, and create an addition problem usingthis format: mailbox = mail + box. Demonstrate findingthe picture on one of the Compound Word AdditionWorksheet Reproducibles and filling in the additionproblem next to its picture.
