ALARM MANAGEMENT SYSTEM (AMS)
Overview
Alarm system is a crucial component in automatically monitoring the plant condition and attract-
ing the attention of the process operator to significant changes that require an action. Alarm
must be fit for purpose to prevent potential financial and safety related losses, and is displayed
within operator’s ability to respond properly.
AMS Gives More Improvements
• Alarm system is a crucial component in
automatically monitoring the plant con-
dition and attracting the attention of the
process operator to significant changes
that require an action. Alarm must be
fit for purpose to prevent potential fi-
nancial and safety related losses, and is
displayed within operator’s ability to re-
spond properly.
• To recognize and act to avoid hazardous
situations. It is the role of the ESD sys-
tem to intervene before a hazard arises.
• To identify deviations from desired op-
erating conditions that could lead to fi-
nancial loss such as off-specification or
overly expensive product.
• To better understand complex process
conditions. Alarm should be an impor-
tant diagnostic tool, and is one of sev-
eral sources that an operator uses to
react during an upset.
• Too many alarms that are generated by
DCS or controller make it difficult to op-
erators to identify and respond to criti-
cal alarms. Implemented AMS assists
operators in taking the appropriate ac-
tions.

ALARM MANAGEMENT SYSTEM (AMS)
Analysis Tools
Monitoring the performance of an alarm system should be carried out at regular intervals
throughout its life cycle to ensure the system’s performance remains within the limits/bounda-
ries described in the standard. It is therefore important to maintain both a history of a system’s
performance and to set up suitable logging and analysis facilities to be able to extract and
record the following information from the alarm system:
• Alarm History
• Top-N Alarm
• Alarm Count / 10 minutes
• Alarm Count / Day
• First Out Alarm
• Weekly Average Alarm
• Maintenance
• Journal
• Fire and Gas

AFRAS (AUTOMATION FAILURE REPORTING AND ASSESSMENT SYSTEM)
Overview
Data Automation in industry has the primary mission of providing reliable & efficient data high-
way from field automation systems to the business. Higher efficiency can be achieved through
fit-for-purpose architecture design & proper selection of available technology. Reliability can
most effectively be managed by continuously measuring it against determined parameters, and
therefore requires data produced by well-structured failure reporting mechanisms.
AFRAS records and provides such failure data as well as the reporting system. All automation
failures, for example, failure of PLC, DCS, Data Acquisition Server (OPC and IO Server), Human
Machine Interface (HMI), Real-time Database, Web Portal, etc, can be reported by AFRAS.
Features & Benefits
Successful AFRAS implementation will provide:
• Easy and timely collection of accurate failure data from the field in standardized and
compatible data structures.
• Total elimination of complicated and redundant paper-based data records throughout
the failure collection process, thereby avoiding dual reporting.
• Effective data analysis to determine root cause mechanisms and real-time failure
trends for fast and accurate decisionmaking.
• Accurate historical reliability performance for use in determining appropriate correc-
tive actions.
• Provide reports that facilitate and support corrective action decisions by both man-
agement and engineering personnel regarding the improvement of designs and field
support systems.
• Continued monitoring and testing to ensure that implemented corrective actions ei-
ther prevent failure recurrence or simplify or reduce maintenance tasks.
PRODUCT DETAIL
AFRAS (AUTOMATION FAILURE REPORTING AND ASSESSMENT SYSTEM)
Automatic Failure Recording
AFRAS also provides automatic detection for
SCADA applications such as OPC Server, HMI
and Real Time Database. The AFR (Automatic
Failure Recording) Engine will detect “heart-
beat” of SCADA application and PC. If a failure
occurs, it will be automatically sent to AFRAS
database. The AFR can also be configured and
customized to send e-mail automatically to
responsible personnel when failure occurs for
further analysis.
Architecture
The system architecture uses SPLAM (Struc-
tured Progressive Limitless Asset Manager) as a
database framework. SPLAM is an asset manage-
ment software based on Microsoft .Net Technol-
ogy and runs on Microsoft SQL Server. All failure
data is recorded and stored in SPLAM database.
AFRAS structure is consistent to OREDA and it’s
enhanced by having appropriate Failure Modes &
Failure Cause for Automation equipment.

AFRAS (AUTOMATION FAILURE REPORTING AND ASSESSMENT SYSTEM)
Reporting System
In addition to custom reporting capability, AFRAS provides pre-defined reports such as:
• Failure Event – Downtime.
• Failure Event – Frequency.
• Failure Event – Detail Equipment.
• Failure Event – Management Report.
• Failure Event – Failure Mode (Pareto).
• Failure Event – Reported & Closed by with sophisticated graphical drill down ability
for detailed.

SCADA SYSTEM
Overview
SCADA focuses on the supervisory level of control and data acquisition systems. As such, it is
commonly a software package that is positioned on top of hardware to which it is interfaced,
in general via Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs), or other commercial hardware modules.
SCADA systems are used not only in industrial processes: e.g. steel making, power generation
and distribution, chemistry, but also in some experimental facilities. The size of such plants range
from a few hundred to several 10 thousands input/output (I/O) channels. The systems mainly run
on DOS, UNIX, Linux and Windows. General components of SCADA Acquisition is:
•ComputerBased
•HumanMachineInterface
•AlarmsManagement
•DataAcquisition
•OperatorInterface

•NonReal-TimeControl
•TelemetrySystem
•Logging
•Database

SCADA SYSTEM
Alarm and Event Monitoring
A SCADA system must be able to detect, display, and log
alarms and events. When there are problems the SCADA
system must notify operators to take corrective action.
Alarms and events must be recorded so engineers or
programmers can review the alarms to determine what
caused the alarm and prevent them happening again.
Computer Based
SCADA software must have all possible
types of connectivity and integration.
This means serial ports, Ethernet, PCI
slots, and the ability to run a wide vari-
ety of applications. PLCs, RTUs and sim-
ple operator interfaces (i.e. not based on
the regular Windows operating system)
are too limited in their functionality and
capabilities.
