Information &
Events for
May—June 2009
Dear Families,
It is so wonderful that spring is here. Our Gardening Team, Lily Yip, Bruce Jacobson, Nelson and Wanda Hom, have been hard at work beautifying our campus.
With Spring in the air, let us celebrate the amazing feedback from The Ameri-can Montessori Society. The American Montessori Society commends the teachers at LMMA for consistently sharing a sense of wonder with every child, in every lesson, and with each kind interaction.
The American Montessori Society commends LMMA for fully engaging the parents and enabling them to clearly articulate the mission of the school. Furthermore, the parents support of the school with its outstanding PVO or-ganization is unlike any other organization they have experienced.
We hope that you enjoyed the Elementary Music Program that Julie Troum organized. “Amazing, Wonderful, Wholesome, Entertaining, Creative, Beauti-ful and Well Done” are the accolades sent to the elementary children. The feedback was extraordinary and we thank Julie for her dedication to our school.
We look forward to the beginning of summer, we hope you will join us for some camps. Be sure to rest and relax.
With Friendship,
Sheila and Scott

Thank You for Supporting the
Center for Great Apes written by the Barry Class
On February 21, the Barry class went to the Center for the Great Apes. We learned that the Center rescues abused apes and apes that have been used in Hollywood. We learned it can take eleven strong men to almost beat an orangutan or chimp at a game of tug-of-war. We also learned that the difference between monkeys and chimps is that monkeys have tails and chimps do not. We donated $100 from our class store, Fun Depot, to the Center. If you are interested in learning more you can visit www.centerforgreatapes.org.

Miscellaneous Tidbits
LMMA’s School Illness Policy
Cold and Flu Season: Since antibiotics work only against bacteria and never against viruses, they have no effect on colds, flu, bronchitis and most sore throats. Therefore, if your child does not look or feel well, our policy is for them to stay home until symptoms are completely gone. They will then be allowed to return to school. Remember to have your child wash his hands regularly. Rest at home is still the best medicine.
School Illness Policy: For your child’s welfare and that of the other children and teachers, no child will be allowed in school with the following symptoms or illnesses:
Yellow/green nasal discharge
Cough
Fever (100 degrees or over); the child must stay at home for 2 days
Diarrhea or loose bowels
Vomiting
Contagious illness (conjunctivitis, flu, chicken pox, impetigo)
Pinworms or head lice (until treatment is performed and all nits are removed)
A doctor’s note may be required to admit the child back into school for certain illnesses.
To Our Parents Who Travel in the U.S.
and Abroad The cultural materials the children experience in their classrooms have been provided by the many generous parents who travel outside the Central Florida area. These pictures and objects from a different land bring to your child the awareness of the diversity of the world in which we all live. If you would like to continue to help us enhance your child’s classroom, below are some suggested items:
Postcards
Miniature objects that match picture on postcard
Cultural dolls
Musical instruments (miniature) of that land
Musical boxes (Country national anthem)
Objects (i.e., shells, rocks, - for sorting/counting)
Samples of food (i.e., rice cakes, seaweed crackers)
Coins/paper money
Trays
Children’s clothes
Material (fabric)
Materials for Summer Camp We are collecting the following art materials for summer camp:
Halloween costumes, scarves, hats for drama and acting out stories
Sewing odds and ends
Art posters or calendars
Ribbons/lace
Fabric
Sheets for drop cloths
Large t-shirts for art smocks
Vases, all sizes
Please give odds and ends to Sheila. Your contributions are greatly appreciated.

Birthday Party
School Art Show
Book Review by Emily Erdman
Hooray! We celebrated our 14th Birthday on Friday, April 24th. A wonderful time was had by all. We thank all the volunteers and families that came out to help us celebrate. Another amazing year and we look forward to many more!
Congratulations to Mrs D. and Mrs. Daly, for organizing and presenting the art for our first annual art show. Applauds go out to the Primary Teachers for their work: Mrs. Amoroso, Mrs. Babinchak, Ms. Stiers, Ms. Haycock, and Mrs. Ruhe. And let us not forget the children. Hats Off to all the artists!
Mitchell Linville’s art work was hand selected to be framed by a profes-sional company responsible for framing art work throughout many schools.
If you are interested in having your child’s masterpieces framed, you can go to the school office or call Framing Creations at 407-444-5685.

What are your feelings about Montessori? I love LMMA! I’ve been here 9 years, so how could I feel any different! One thing I love is that we have so much room to do what we want. One day when we finished our work, Cassie, Victoria and I decided to do a project. We call it Lemurology and we are still trying to finish it!
What will you miss most about LMMA? I think I will miss all the teachers and all my friends. I love all my teachers that I have had and the ones I haven’t. I’m going to try to stay in touch with everyone especially the ones in Barry Class, they are awesome and there’s no way I’m going to leave them behind once I leave.
What is your greatest memory about being at LMMA? Darn! This is a hard question! There are so many great memories. One of my favorite is when Mrs. Gonzalez came to observe before she worked here. Back then she was still Miss. Kaufman. I remember she sat at my table to observe and I didn’t want to leave her side all day.
Where are you attending school next year?
Trinity Preparatory School
What are your aspirations? Next year I hope to try out for school plays. I would like to play on the basketball team. When I grow up I would like to be a graphic designer or some kind of artist.
Will you visit us? DUH! Every possible chance I get!!!
Shayne Cardamone
What are your feelings about Montessori? My feelings about Montessori are very deep. I have been here for a long time and it’s hard to leave. I will always remember LMMA! My parents couldn’t have chose a better school.
What will you miss most about LMMA? I will miss all the teachers and having a small classroom. I will also miss being around the same people, and the way we do everything.
What is your greatest memory about being at LMMA? My greatest memory was when it was the first day I visited and I was in Mrs. Gonzalez class everyone came up to me and said hi and who they were. When I left and came back the next day they all said we missed you!
Where are you attending school next year? Orangewood.
What are your aspirations? I look forward to making new friends and working on art. I would like to expand on my like for math!
Will you visit us? This question is easy! Of course I will be visiting!!!

Emily Erdman’s pick from Literature Circle.
Gossamer written by Lois Lowry
Gossamer is a book about Littlest One, a tiny dream giver who is still learning the importance of bestowing a dream. But when John, a foster child who is emotionally hurt, goes to live with a elderly women in the Littlest One’s assigned house the evil sin steeds, creatures who bestow nightmares, come after him. Littlest One and her teacher, Thin Elderly, must strengthen him with very pleasant dreams. When sin steeds find out that the dream givers are strengthening John they get very angry and plan to make a large attack on the boy.
What will the Littlest One do? Find out in Gossamer! I highly recommend this book to people with a large imagination and a love for heartwarming stories.
