They are a great opportunity to see how people from other parts of the world do the history of science and I expect the same is true of the international Congress on Logic Meth-odology and the Philosophy of Science and Technology which will next meet in Prague in 2019 The ICSHT and CLMPST are organized by sister Divisions that together form the International Union of History and Philosophy of Science and Technology It is good to see that CSHPS in a smaller way provides a single home for the ideas repre-sented in both Divisions

It hardly needs saying that our members will be active in these and many other conferences and promoting the his-tory and philosophy of science in countless other ways by teaching writing and engaging with current concerns Events of the previous year show that questions about the nature and making of scientific knowledge in the past and present are as relevant now as they ever have been In be-tween all the day to day concerns of academic life and the very real concerns of those looking for academic jobs it is important to remember that the history and philosophy of science do in fact matter

Presidentrsquos ReportWinter 2017

How quickly this new year is upon us A few months ago we were reflecting on the successes of last yearrsquos annual meet-ing and now the Program Committee and Local Arrange-ments Coordinator are very much in the midst of preparing for this yearrsquos meeting I strongly encourage all of you to consider presenting papers organizing sessions and simply attending the 2017 meeting The end of May is a wonder-ful time to be in Toronto and Ryerson University with its vibrant campus in the heart of downtown promises to be an exciting and attractive venue for Congress Following the decision at last yearrsquos AGM Communiqueacute has with this issue gone electronic The one exception will be the program for the annual meeting which will continue to be made available also in print form The strength of our society is in our members and the annual meeting is the best opportunity not only to meet each other in person it is also the place for all of us to participate in the governance of the society at the Annual General Meeting Please do take a look at the minutes of last yearrsquos AGM conveniently printed in the Summer 2016 Communiqueacute (PDF) which in turn is readily available on the CSHPS website

I would also encourage CSHPS members particularly the historians to consider attending the International Congress of History of Science and Technology which will be held in Rio de Janeiro 23-29 July The ICHST meets every four years and this Congress the 25th has as its theme ldquoScience Technology and Medicine between the Global and the Lo-calrdquo The ICHSTrsquos have a much more international charac-ter than is typical of North American and British meetings Snowflake photographs by Wilson Bentley (1865-1931)

The Canadian Society for the History and Philosophy of Science (CSHPS) is holding its annual conference as part of the Congress of the Humanities and Social Sciences in Toronto Ontario May 27-30 2017

The Program Committee invites scholars working on the history and philosophy of science to submit ab-stracts for individual papers or proposals for sessions (3 and 4 papers) In the year of Canadarsquos sesquicenten-nial we particularly encourage scholars to engage with the theme for Congress 2017 ndash ldquoThe Next 150 On Indigenous Landsrdquo (see httpcongress2017caabouttheme) Unrelated topics and themes are also welcome

Meeting languages The CSHPS is a bilingual society Individual papers may be given in English or French but efforts to broaden participation are appreciated (eg a presentation in English could be accompanied by a PowerPoint in French and vice versa) Similarly sessions can be presented in either English or French but bilingual sessions are especially welcomed

Joint sessions The CSHPS meeting overlaps with the meeting dates of a number of other member societies of the CFHSS including the Canadian Historical As-sociation Canadian Philosophical Association Cana-dian Society for the History and Philosophy of Math-ematics Canadian Sociological Association Womenrsquos and Gender Studies et Recherches Feacuteministes and Ca-nadian Society for the History of Medicine We wel-come proposals for joint sessions with these and other societies (please mention this specifically in your ses-sion proposal) However no talk will be accepted for presentation at more than one society

Number of submissions Individuals can only submit one abstract for the CSHPS meeting (ie either an ab-stract for an individual paper or an abstract part of a session proposal)

Submissions In order to preserve the anonymity of authors it is important that contact information and other identifying information be excluded from the file containing the abstract

In the latter decades of the twentieth century discourses on science and technology began to spread beyond the professional communities of scientific experts involved in knowledge production In the cultural realm we saw the rise of the ldquopopular sciencerdquo genre of science series and documentaries on TV and around the turn of the millennium an increase in the amount depth and quality of attention paid to science in literary and mainstream fiction At the Narrating Science conference we bring together scholars scientists and writers to compare how and to what effect storytelling about science across a spectrum of genres (fiction and non-fiction) and media (print and film) is engaging with different aspects of science (concepts and facts practice and practitioners institutions and societal impacts) Novelists Allegra Goodman and Karen Jay Fowler will be joining us with a public reading and discussion of their novels Intuition The Cookbook Collector and We Are All Completely Beside Ourselves

We are interested in what and how stories about science are contributing to understandings of issues of societal concern (eg climate change genetic engineering nuclear physics evolution concepts of cognition pharmaceutics nuclear power scientific ethics and responsibility etc) and in how they reflect or embody the specifically global nature of the scientific enterprise (the permeability of national borders to concepts technologies and scientists different cultural and national contexts for the practice and use of science and culture-dependent popular perceptions of science)

Career CornerAs you build you professional relationships to find a job and build your career it can be very useful to take stock of the people in your network so that you know who can help you (and who you can help) at any given moment Ultimately how you categorize your profes-sional relationships is up to you but Irsquod recommend four buckets colleagues collaborators mentors and advocates

Colleague is almost always the most populous category because it includes all of your professional peers

Collaborator includes everyone you can work with pro-ductively because you have mutually aligned career goals (at least for a period of time)

Mentors are colleagues that you meet with fairly regu-larly (at least for a period of time) who provide sup-port and advice and who genuinely care about your career progression Your supervisor can be a mentor but there are limits to the kinds of mentoring a su-pervisor can give Mentors are often more senior than you in an organization or field but that need not be the case

Advocates look a lot like mentors in that they genuine-ly care about your career progression and are usually more senior than you in a field or organization (poten-tially even your supervisor) However what separates advocates from mentors is that the former arenrsquot great at providing advice andor support

While the lines between these categories can be blur-ry (someone could collaborate and mentor etc) the reason to separate your professional relationships into these categories is so that you can take stock of the support you have while also paying attention to the roles you are playing in other peoplersquos networks This can help you prioritize how you spend your time and energy so it is useful to remember two things First every relationship starts collegially some will evolve into collaboration mentorship or advocacy but most wonrsquot Second the more intensive relationships (col-laborators mentors and advocates) will shift over time as your career needs andor theirs change

Docteure en philosophie de lrsquoUniversiteacute de Western Ontario (2016) Molly a eacuteteacute recruteacutee au printemps dernier comme Professeure de philosophie des sciences agrave lrsquouniversiteacute de Montreacuteal On revient avec elle sur son cheminement universitaire ses expeacuteriences de doctor-ante ses travaux de recherche et deux ou trois conseils pour ceux et celles qui srsquoembarquent sur la route escar-peacutee de la thegravese

Ton parcours acadeacutemique deacutebute avec un Baccalau-reacuteat en philosophie et matheacutematiques agrave lrsquouniversiteacute de Windsor (Ontario) Pourquoi cette double for-mation

En fait jrsquoai commenceacute un bac en philosophie et je me suis rendu compte apregraves une anneacutee que le tra-vail de lecture lrsquoeacutetude de lrsquohistoire de la discipline ne me satisfaisaient pas complegravetement jrsquoai alors entameacute une mineure en matheacutematiques (pour passer ensuite agrave une double concentration) dont le cocircteacute analytique mrsquoa beaucoup plus et qui compleacutetait bien ma forma-tion philosophique Ce qui est bien avec les matheacute-matiques crsquoest qursquoon peut parvenir agrave une reacuteponse cor-recte au terme drsquoune deacutemonstration bien meneacutee dont les eacutetapes srsquoenchainent logiquement ce qui est un vrai plaisir intellectuel En philosophie il est beaucoup plus ardu drsquoarriver agrave la laquo bonne raquo reacuteponse mecircme si crsquoest aussi tregraves stimulant de deacutevelopper des arguments ou de deacutefendre telle ou telle position

Et pour ta maicirctrise en philosophie Tu trsquoy es lanceacutee avec lrsquoideacutee de faire de la philosophie des matheacutema-tiques

Non parce que quand jrsquoai commenceacute ma maicirctrise je nrsquoavais pas vraiment une ideacutee claire de ce que je voulais faire Jrsquoai eacutetudieacute la philosophie des matheacute-matiques mais jrsquoavais plutocirct un inteacuterecirct geacuteneacuteral pour lrsquoeacutepisteacutemologie crsquoest-agrave-dire pour la question de savoir ce qui justifie nos croyances et jrsquoai trouveacute que la phi-losophie des sciences me permettait drsquoapprocher ce problegraveme de maniegravere inteacuteressante Et crsquoest dans ce cadre que jrsquoai pu mettre agrave profit comme outil ma connaissance des matheacutematiques pour reacutepondre aux interrogations eacutepisteacutemologiques que jrsquoavais Crsquoest par exemple ce que jrsquoai essayeacute de faire dans ma thegravese [Eval-uating the Quantum Postulate in the Context of Pursuit (Directeur Wayne Myrvold UWO 2016)] ougrave jrsquoai utiliseacute une perspective bayeacutesienne ndash celle de lrsquo laquo eacutepis-teacutemologie formelle raquo ndash pour analyser dans le cas de la theacuteorie quantique la faccedilon dont on pouvait eacutemettre des jugements agrave propos de la feacuteconditeacute des diffeacuterentes hypothegraveses disponibles De la mecircme maniegravere dans un article reacutecent [Molly Kao laquo A New Role for Data in the Philosophy of Science raquo Philosophie Scientiae (2015) 19-1 p 9-20] jrsquoai appliqueacute lrsquoeacutepisteacutemologie empiriste drsquoAnil Gupta qui conccediloit les donneacutees de lrsquoexpeacuterience comme jouant le rocircle de garantie fonctionnelle dans la justification de nos jugements au problegraveme de la circulariteacute de la mesure en science ce qui mrsquoa permis de clarifier le rocircle des donneacutees dans la construction et la justification des theacuteories scientifiques

Effectivement dans tes travaux en philosophie des sciences tu adoptes une approche reacutesolument geacute-neacuteraliste

Crsquoest devenu tregraves commun aujourdrsquohui pour les phi-losophes de se speacutecialiser dans la philosophie drsquoune science donneacutee comme la physique ou la biologie et crsquoest eacutevidemment une bonne chose dans la mesure ougrave il faut savoir de quoi lrsquoon parle mais je pense que cette speacutecialisation qui parfois rend le dialogue difficile en-tre les speacutecialistes des diffeacuterentes disciplines laisse tout agrave fait la place pour des interrogations plus geacuteneacuterales sur la connaissance qui sont communes aux diffeacuterentes sciences Crsquoest pourquoi apregraves mrsquoecirctre particuliegraverement attacheacutee agrave la physique jrsquoessaie aujourdrsquohui de donner un tour plus geacuteneacuteral agrave mes projets de recherche tout en essayant qursquoils soient enracineacutes dans une connais-sance concregravete des sciences

Munich Center for Mathematical Philosophy) et que je me suis dit que lrsquoapproche bayeacutesienne pourrait me servir de guide pour eacutetudier comment le postulat de la nature discregravete de lrsquoeacutenergie avait pu srsquoaffirmer com-me hypothegravese unificatrice dans le cadre de la theacuteorie quantique notamment lors de la deacutetermination de la valeur de la constante de Planck A partir du mo-ment ougrave jrsquoai eu deacutecideacute de travailler sur la question de lrsquounification dans la theacuteorie quantique alors le choix de Wayne comme superviseur srsquoest imposeacute naturelle-ment Mais les liens entre unification theacuteorie quan-tique et approche bayeacutesienne ne me sont pas apparus immeacutediatement quand jrsquoai reacutedigeacute le travail de maicirctrise qursquoon eacutevoquait preacuteceacutedemment loin de lagrave

Qursquoest-ce que tu as trouveacute le plus dur dans le travail doctoral

Je nrsquoavais jamais suivi de cours de physique pendant mon parcours universitaire et jrsquoai donc ducirc me famil-iariser par moi-mecircme avec lrsquohistoire de la meacutecanique quantique histoire de ne pas dire de becirctises Et jrsquoai trouveacute ccedila difficile parce que parfois mecircme si on a la chance drsquoavoir autour de soi des gens qui peu-vent trsquoaider comme ton directeur de thegravese on a ten-dance agrave srsquoisoler alors qursquoune discussion avec une autre eacutetudiante te permet souvent de mieux comprendre ce qui trsquoeacutechappe En fait pendant ma maicirctrise et les premiegraveres anneacutees de mon doctorat jrsquoai peut-ecirctre ap-pris autant de mes camarades que de mes professeurs De ce point de vue agrave Western lrsquoenvironnement eacutetait tregraves accueillant et il y avait vraiment une commu-nauteacute de philosophes des matheacutematiques et de philos-ophes des sciences dans laquelle jrsquoai pu mrsquointeacutegrer les doctorantes plus avanceacutees eacutepaulant ceux qui com-menccedilaient juste leur thegravese

Et qursquoas-tu retireacute de ton seacutejour de 2 ans au Munich Center for Mathematical Philosophy

Comme je nrsquoeacutetais que visiting student je ne peux pas dire que jrsquoai eu lrsquoexpeacuterience complegravete drsquoune eacutetudiante de lagrave-bas (gracircce agrave Skype jrsquoai pu rester en contact eacutetroit avec mon directeur) mais ce qui mrsquoa frappeacute crsquoest la speacutecialisation qui y regravegne mecircme si agrave Western il y a un nombre conseacutequent de gens qui travaillent en philoso-phie des sciences agrave Munich la totaliteacute des membres

Mais est-ce que cette approche geacuteneacuteraliste devrait aussi nous pousser agrave adopter une attitude reacuteduc-tionniste

Crsquoest une question difficile Je deacutefendrais volontiers un reacuteductionnisme ontologique au sens ougrave je pense que les entiteacutes fondamentales de la physique constituent bien la base dont deacuterivent les autres niveaux de reacutealiteacute mais je ne crois pas qursquoil faille srsquoattendre agrave une reacuteduc-tion ndash du point de vue eacutepisteacutemologique ndash des diffeacuterents niveaux de lrsquoenquecircte scientifique Par contre ce qui mrsquointeacuteresse crsquoest de voir agrave quel point meacutethodologique-ment lrsquounification peut fonctionner comme une stra-teacutegie commune aux diffeacuterentes sciences En tout cas je crois que mecircme srsquoil eacutetait possible drsquoarriver agrave une reacute-duction ontologique des autres sciences agrave la physique cette reacuteduction ne serait pas neacutecessaire pour penser meacutethodologiquement le rocircle des hypothegraveses unificatri-ces notamment dans ce qursquoon a appeleacute le laquo contexte de deacutecouverte raquo ou le laquo contexte de poursuite raquo Crsquoest cette piste de recherche que jrsquoaimerais aborder dans les anneacutees agrave venir un peu dans la veine de ce qui srsquoest fait dans les neurosciences ou de ce que Lindley Darden a eacutecrit sur les meacutecanismes et en essayant de bien dis-tinguer potentiel drsquounification et robustesse des hy-pothegraveses ou des theacuteories scientifiques

Maintenant que lrsquoon sait ougrave tu te situes phi-losophiquement revenons un peu arriegravere et parlons du choix de ton sujet de thegravese comment lrsquoas-tu eacutelaboreacute Est-ce ton directeur de thegravese Wayne Myr-vold qui te lrsquoa suggeacutereacute

Pas vraiment le processus a eacuteteacute plus complexe que cela Jrsquoavais bien sucircr deacutejagrave assisteacute agrave un cours de Wayne pen-dant ma premiegravere anneacutee de maicirctrise sur la philosophie de la meacutecanique quantique pour lequel jrsquoavais reacutedigeacute un travail ndash pas tregraves bon drsquoailleurs ndash sur les incoheacuterenc-es dans la theacuteorie quantique de Bohr Ensuite au deacutebut de mon doctorat je me suis inteacuteresseacutee agrave la question de lrsquounification drsquoun point de vue historique (notamment chez Perrin et sa contribution agrave la theacuteorie atomique ou chez Newton en mrsquoinspirant des travaux de Bill Harper sur la question) et crsquoest aussi agrave ce moment-lagrave que jrsquoai deacutecouvert lrsquoeacutepisteacutemologie formelle (dont jrsquoai pu ensuite approfondir la connaissance que jrsquoen avais lors drsquoun seacutejour prolongeacute comme visiting student au

du centre font soit de la logique soit de la philosophie des sciences lrsquoeacutepisteacutemologie formelle opegraverant comme un lien entre eux Et il y a tellement de confeacuterences chaque semaine qursquoil est impossible drsquoassister agrave tout Au bout du compte ce seacutejour mrsquoa aussi eacuteteacute tregraves profit-able parce qursquoil mrsquoa permis de deacutecouvrir une nouvelle communauteacute de chercheurs et drsquoeacutetablir des liens avec certains drsquoentre eux ce que je nrsquoaurais pas pu faire si jrsquoeacutetais resteacute en Ameacuterique du Nord pendant lrsquointeacutegraliteacute de ma thegravese

Pendant tes eacutetudes universitaires tu trsquoes beaucoup investi dans les services agrave la collectiviteacute notamment comme repreacutesentante eacutetudiante Qursquoest-ce que tu en as appris

Cela mrsquoa permis de comprendre que srsquoil est leacutegitime et positif que tous les acteurs dans lrsquouniversiteacute vien-nent avec des demandes et des revendications il faut aussi garder en tecircte qursquoil existe un certain nombre de pressions ou de contraintes srsquoexerccedilant au niveau des deacutepartements des faculteacutes etc qui empecircchent les personnes en position deacutecisionnelle de contenter tout le monde Cela a eacuteteacute pour moi une bonne expeacuteri-ence parce que cela mrsquoa aideacute agrave reacutealiser qursquoil y avait des changements faciles agrave opeacuterer et drsquoautres qui le sont moins et qursquoil nrsquoest pas toujours aiseacute de les distinguer

Une fois ton doctorat en poche comment as-tu abordeacute la peacuteriode deacutelicate de la recherche drsquoemploi

En fait jrsquoai eu la tregraves grande chance drsquoecirctre embau-cheacutee agrave lrsquoUniversiteacute de Montreacuteal avant mecircme drsquoavoir officiellement reccedilu le titre de docteure Pour ce qui est de la recherche drsquoemploi ma situation eacutetait par-ticuliegravere mon conjoint est lui aussi philosophe des sciences mais il travaillait agrave ce moment-lagrave dans le do-maine informatique il a donc candidateacute agrave un nombre restreint de postes universitaires qui correspondaient vraiment agrave son profil ce que jrsquoai aussi fait parce que je voulais vraiment consacrer le maximum de temps dans ma derniegravere anneacutee de doctorat agrave ma thegravese plutocirct qursquoagrave multiplier les dossiers de candidature Bien sucircr il faut aussi essayer comme on me lrsquoa conseilleacute drsquoavoir le plus drsquoopportuniteacutes possibles ndash et donc consideacuterer les postes au Canada aux Eacutetats-Unis ou en Europe ndash mais il faut aussi veiller agrave ne pas faire des compromis

qui pourront ecirctre probleacutematiques plus tard dans la car-riegravere lorsqursquoon voudra changer de poste ou aller voir ailleurs De la mecircme maniegravere il faut essayer drsquoavoir une ou deux tregraves bonnes publications dans des jour-naux reconnus plutocirct que de multiplier des publica-tions dans des journaux moins bien coteacutes

A lrsquoUniversiteacute de Montreacuteal tu as eacuteteacute recruteacutee sur un poste de philosophie des scienceshellip

Oui je vais enseigner la philosophie geacuteneacuterale des sci-ences la philosophie de la physique bien sucircr mais aussi la logique ce qui me plaicirct particuliegraverement parce que crsquoest une matiegravere ougrave tout le monde avec du travail et de lrsquoapplication peut reacuteussir

Et ton enseignement se donne en franccedilais qui nrsquoest pas ta langue maternelle Comment srsquoest passeacute le processus drsquoacclimatation linguistique

LrsquoUniversiteacute mrsquoa fait passer un test de classement pour eacutevaluer mon niveau et jrsquoai pu beacuteneacuteficier drsquoune tutrice priveacutee ndash qui est tregraves bonne ndash que je rencontre une ou deux fois par semaine agrave mon bureau et avec laquelle je travaille sur des points concrets qursquoon deacutecide ensemble en fonction de mes besoins (par exemple preacuteparer une intervention orale que je dois faire) ce qui est mieux que de prendre un cours dont on nrsquoest jamais sucircr a priori qursquoil reacuteponde agrave tes attentes LrsquoUniversiteacute mrsquoa aussi accordeacute comme une peacuteriode drsquoadaptation ce qui fait que mecircme si jrsquoai eacuteteacute embaucheacute agrave lrsquoautomne je nrsquoai commenceacute agrave enseigner que cet hiver

Y a-t-il des choses qui trsquoont surprise agreacuteable-ment ou pas dans les modes de fonctionnement de lrsquouniversiteacute queacutebeacutecoise

Pendant tes eacutetudes universitaires tu trsquoes beaucoup investi dans les services agrave la collectiviteacute notamment comme repreacutesentante eacutetudiante Qursquoest-ce que tu en as appris

Cela mrsquoa permis de comprendre que srsquoil est leacutegitime et positif que tous les acteurs dans lrsquouniversiteacute vien-nent avec des demandes et des revendications il faut aussi garder en tecircte qursquoil existe un certain nombre de pressions ou de contraintes srsquoexerccedilant au niveau des deacutepartements des faculteacutes etc qui empecircchent les personnes en position deacutecisionnelle de contenter tout le monde Cela a eacuteteacute pour moi une bonne expeacuteri-ence parce que cela mrsquoa aideacute agrave reacutealiser qursquoil y avait des changements faciles agrave opeacuterer et drsquoautres qui le sont moins et qursquoil nrsquoest pas toujours aiseacute de les distinguer

Une fois ton doctorat en poche comment as-tu abordeacute la peacuteriode deacutelicate de la recherche drsquoemploi

En fait jrsquoai eu la tregraves grande chance drsquoecirctre embau-cheacutee agrave lrsquoUniversiteacute de Montreacuteal avant mecircme drsquoavoir officiellement reccedilu le titre de docteure Pour ce qui est de la recherche drsquoemploi ma situation eacutetait par-ticuliegravere mon conjoint est lui aussi philosophe des sciences mais il travaillait agrave ce moment-lagrave dans le do-maine informatique il a donc candidateacute agrave un nombre restreint de postes universitaires qui correspondaient vraiment agrave son profil ce que jrsquoai aussi fait parce que je voulais vraiment consacrer le maximum de temps dans ma derniegravere anneacutee de doctorat agrave ma thegravese plutocirct qursquoagrave multiplier les dossiers de candidature Bien sucircr il faut aussi essayer comme on me lrsquoa conseilleacute drsquoavoir le plus drsquoopportuniteacutes possibles ndash et donc consideacuterer les postes au Canada aux Eacutetats-Unis ou en Europe ndash mais il faut aussi veiller agrave ne pas faire des compromis

qui pourront ecirctre probleacutematiques plus tard dans la car-riegravere lorsqursquoon voudra changer de poste ou aller voir ailleurs De la mecircme maniegravere il faut essayer drsquoavoir une ou deux tregraves bonnes publications dans des jour-naux reconnus plutocirct que de multiplier des publica-tions dans des journaux moins bien coteacutes

A lrsquoUniversiteacute de Montreacuteal tu as eacuteteacute recruteacutee sur un poste de philosophie des scienceshellip

Oui je vais enseigner la philosophie geacuteneacuterale des sci-ences la philosophie de la physique bien sucircr mais aussi la logique ce qui me plaicirct particuliegraverement parce que crsquoest une matiegravere ougrave tout le monde avec du travail et de lrsquoapplication peut reacuteussir

Et ton enseignement se donne en franccedilais qui nrsquoest pas ta langue maternelle Comment srsquoest passeacute le processus drsquoacclimatation linguistique

LrsquoUniversiteacute mrsquoa fait passer un test de classement pour eacutevaluer mon niveau et jrsquoai pu beacuteneacuteficier drsquoune tutrice priveacutee ndash qui est tregraves bonne ndash que je rencontre une ou deux fois par semaine agrave mon bureau et avec laquelle je travaille sur des points concrets qursquoon deacutecide ensemble en fonction de mes besoins (par exemple preacuteparer une intervention orale que je dois faire) ce qui est mieux que de prendre un cours dont on nrsquoest jamais sucircr a priori qursquoil reacuteponde agrave tes attentes LrsquoUniversiteacute mrsquoa aussi accordeacute comme une peacuteriode drsquoadaptation ce qui fait que mecircme si jrsquoai eacuteteacute embaucheacute agrave lrsquoautomne je nrsquoai commenceacute agrave enseigner que cet hiver

Eran Tal (Philosophy) has a PhD in Philosophy from the University of Toronto (2012) and an MA in His-tory and Philosophy of Science from Tel Aviv Univer-sity (2006) He joined the Philosophy Department at McGill University as a tenure-track Assistant Professor in the summer of 2016 after holding fellowships at the University of Cambridge and Bielefeld University (Germany) In his new role Dr Tal will advance HPS-related teaching and research at McGill and contribute to the undergraduate Concentration in HPS (HPSC) Dr Tal is also the co-recipient of the 2016 Sir Karl Popper Prize for his paper ldquoMaking Time A Study in the Epistemology of Measurementrdquo published in the British Journal for the Philosophy of Science earlier this year The paper presents a novel model-based frame-work for the analysis of standardization procedures in the natural sciences with the contemporary standard-ization of time serving as the primary example

Irsquom now the treasurer of my Toronto neigh-bourhoodrsquos Riverdale Historical Society where Irsquove already arranged the upcoming talk ldquoTorontorsquos Astro-nomical Heritagerdquo by John Percy (University of To-ronto) Irsquom also on the executive of the University Col-lege Alumni Association U of T I successfully nomi-nated Clarence Chant (1865-1956) as an UC Alum-nus of Influence using my bedside copy of the late Richard Jarrellrsquos (York University) In The Cold Light Of Dawn A History of Canadian Astronomy (1988) as a source The first fulltime professor of astronomy at U of T Chant was also responsible for the establishment of their David Dunlap Observatory Chant was for-mally inducted at a banquet on Wednesday November 16 2016 I was Chantrsquos stand-in as we inductees were piped into the baronial splendour of the Great Hall Hart House At table my wife and I sat opposite the stand-in for Stephen Leacock I was a CSHPS representative along with An-drew Ede (University of Alberta) on the Programme Committee for the highly successful Three Societies Meeting (CSHPS ndash BSHS ndash HSS) in Edmonton Al-berta Wed to Sat June 22-25 2106 The task of read-ing and rating a large flight of abstracts was rewarded by an intriguing conference in the enchanted setting of the main University of Alberta Campus replete with magpies and jackrabbits For the outreach programme of the Canadian Society for the History and Philosophy of Mathemat-ics (CSHPM) to the Canadian Mathematical Society (CMS) I contributed my second column ldquoMathemat-ics in lsquoJazz Agersquo Torontordquo (CMS Notes Vol 2 No 3 June 2016 p18-19) Another on the Bertrand Russell Archive at McMaster University is in the works As the local Toronto member of the Canadian Science and Technology Historical Association (CST-HA) as I write Irsquom exploring the practicalities of hold our 2017 conference to coordinate with the November 2017 Toronto meeting of the History of Science Soci-ety (HSS) Also pending is a weekly blog on the joys of delving into the archives for the history of Canadian science aiming for an April 1 2017 launch

Christophe Malaterre (Canada Research Chair in Phi-losophy of the Life Sciences) The inauguration of new ldquoEspace philordquo at the Department of philosophy at UQAM and of the newly created Laboratory of Phi-losophy of Science (LAPS) took place on September 21st This inauguration took place in conjunction with the round-table entitled laquo Naturalizing in science raquo and the launch of the Canada Research Chair in Phi-losophy of the Life Sciences of Christophe Malaterre

Participants to the round table included Christophe Malaterre Molly Kao Luc Faucher Franccedilois Claveau Vincent Guillin and Freacutedeacuteric Bouchard A workshop on ldquoFunctional Biodiversity Conceptual Issuesrdquo jointly organized by the Univer-siteacute du Queacutebec agrave Montreacuteal (UQAM) and the Uni-versiteacute de Montreacuteal was held November 9-10 2016 at UQAM (Organization Christophe Malaterre Freacutedeacuteric Bouchard Antoine C Dussault amp Sophia Rousseau-Mermans) This meeting gathered a diverse group of around 40 scientists and philosophers of sci-ence researching functional biodiversity at all trophic levels and from various perspectives with the intent to identify key conceptual questions that need addressing both by scientists and philosophers

Ben Mitchell (STS) successful defended his disserta-tion ldquoDancing in Chains A History of Friedrich Ni-etzschersquos Physiological Relativismrdquo on September 1st 2016 at York University The dissertation focused on the epistemic and political consequences of Nietzschersquos engagement with physiological thought as it applied to notions of genius vivisection necessity and freedom dynamic self-regulation and the Uumlbermensch He also accepted a position this September as an assistant cu-rator at the Lakeshore Grounds Interpretive Centre in Toronto The newly-opened Centre interprets the natural and built heritage of the Lakeshore Grounds to engage the public in cultural programming relevant to the history of mental health indigenous issues the history of education and the environment Its first ex-hibit will be opening January 2017 and will feature the history of the Lakeshore Psychiatric Hospital
