The case delt with is of Carl R rogers,a psychotherapist who is

intrested in the problems of communication.According to him

in emotionally maladjusted people, communication has

broken down within themselves resulting in

    miscommunication or distorted communication with

others. As a result the suffer both within themselves and in

their inter personal relationship. The role of psychotherapist is

to attain good communication or free communication within

    CONT

The tendency to evaluate A barrier incommunication

We have a natural urge to judge , evaluate and approve or

    disapprove another person statement.

Ex-if someone says I did not like what that man said then

almost every one will respond either approval or

disapproval(yes/no).This is our evaluative tendency and can

create miscommunication because such reactions heightened

situations where emotions and feelings are deeply involved.Because there are two ideas, two feelings , two judgements

missing each other in psychological space and this impulse to

evaluate any emotional meaningful statement from our own

    view point blocks interpersonal communications.

    CONTD.

Gate way to overcome to evaluative barriers:-

We can achieve real communication and avoid this

evaluative tendency ,when we listen with under

standing. This means seeing the expressing idea andattitude from the other persons point of view,

sensing how we feel about the other person ,

achieving his/or her frame of reference about the

    subject being discussed.

Such empathic understanding results in effective

communication and bring significant changes in

    personality.

    Retrospective commentary:-

Here the author has challenged the sanctity of

hierarchical relationships by suggesting the managers

take their subordinates thoughts and feelingsseriously.

Checking the natural tendency to judge yields a

better understanding of the person with whom you

    are communicating .

A better understanding of other persons point of

view in turn helps you communicate better.
