I give thanks and praise to God to Pastor Michael, the church council, the deacon intern advisory team, and the congregation for welcoming me into the ministry and mission of Ad-vent Lutheran Church. I look forward to working with you—and getting to know you better—in the coming year.

According to the official language, “Deacons serve in congregations and other ELCA ministries including family ministries, youth, administration, volunteer minis-try, social services, music, or parish nursing. Deacons connect the church with the needs of the world and work to equip others to lead a living, active and caring Christian life.” Some deacons serve at the intersection of the church and the world, possibly working with non-profit organizations focused on hunger, homelessness, imprisonment, disabilities, hospice care, mental illness, addiction and other areas.

The parable of the Good Samaritan inspires my calling. The powerful, memorable story defines Christians. We are people who respond to the needs of others, whoev-er they may be. I also appreciate how the parable rede-fines the understanding of “Who is our neighbor?” In conjunction with the parable, Jesus teaches that our neighbors are all people. Jesus asserts that our great-est commandment is to “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind’; and, ‘Love your neigh-bor as yourself.’

From the ELCA Stories of Faith in Action

How Mission Support works

Your congregation Your congregation stewards your offering to support your congregation’s vital presence in your community. When your congregation votes to designate a portion of your offering to be shared with your synod and the churchwide organization, your congregation is sharing Mission Support for the ministries stewarded by the wider church on your behalf.

Your synod Your congregation’s Mission Support dollars are stewarded by your synod leaders to nurture and equip ELCA congregations and rostered ministers. Synods support area ministry partners (camps, colleges, seminaries and more) as well as build relationships with companion churches around the world. Synods designate a por-tion of the Mission Support funds they receive from congregations to be shared with your churchwide organi-zation for ministries across our church.

Your churchwide organization Your churchwide organization stewards Mission Support dollars to lead and support ministry on behalf of the whole church. This includes accompanying ELCA congregations as growing centers for evangelical mission, equipping leaders and building the capacity of this church for witness and service in the world.

Everything I Need to Know about Evangelism I Learned from a Brewery Tour Guide

Ok, I know. Sounds silly…but let me explain.

I was on a pastor’s retreat in the Asheville, NC, area and I attended a tour of the New Belgium Brewery. The brewery is quite the engineer-ing triumph (as are most of them, I’m sure…this is my first brewery tour). What was even more fascinating was the tour guide! (Let’s call her Amy.)

Amy was excited and happy to host us, to pour us some samples, and to tell the story of the brewery, which was – in a way – her own story. She knows the founder’s story. She knows the story of the land and the area in which this brewery resides. She knows the com-pany’s core values. Amy told us that after 5 years of employment, the employee becomes a part-owner. So, at the end of the tour, Amy says: “Thank you for coming to my brewery, and for sampling my beer. Have a great day!”

Wow! Amy was fantastic. As I reflected on the tour, and Amy’s story, I got to thinking: Do we, as Christians, know how to share the story of being a follower of Christ? Can we be as excited about being a Christ-follower as Amy is about being an employee of the brewery?

Too often, we think that we must tell people what we believe to tell our story. People come up to you and – if they know you are a Christian – say, “Well, what do you believe?” We feel pressured to recall all the things we learned in Confirmation or what Pastor Michael said last week or whatever litany of creedal statements. Well, I think we turn the question around. Instead of responding with what “I believe…” I say respond with this:

“Being a Christian is not so much about what I believe as much as it is about who I am. Who I am is a follower of Jesus who I know loves me and challenges me every day.” That’s it! That is the beginning of my story as a follower of Christ. We all have our own Gospel story to share, but sharing our faith is about an identity as one claimed by God in the waters of baptism, and not just a list of beliefs.

What is your story? How do you share your excitement about being a Christian in the world?

Peace, Pr. Michael

“Learning how our faith informs our generosity.”

In the next few weeks, you will receive a letter explaining our focus for our annual stewardship

campaign: “Stories of Faith in Action.” We started by sharing these stories in the newsletter, and we

will hear from members about how their faith informs their generosity. We pray for your discernment in how you will make new commitments to Advent

Lutheran Church in the year 2019. You will have 3 ways to inform us of your intent to financial giving to Advent: on Sunday, November 18, at the altar; via an online form; or you can mail in your pledge card.

May you be blessed in your discernment.

Advent Welcomes All ….

Respite Care to be offered on December 1

On Saturday, December 1 Advent Lutheran Church will offer respite care to the caregivers of children with disabilities from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. Disciples from the Disabilities Care Team met again on Oct 21 to contin-ue the planning of this event. You can find the link to the online form on our website or print out the form and mail it to Advent Lutheran, 1700 Irby Lane, Murfreesboro, TN 37127.

Volunteers are needed in a wide variety of areas to help with advance planning and to be present on December 1. Please contact Pastor Michael ([email protected]) or Lori Ward ([email protected]) for more information or to volunteer.

The seeds of offering respite care sprang from meetings at Advent last year which were attended by people who recognize the need for ministry with and among people with disabilities. Called to ministry of word and service, with an emphasis on community outreach, I was struck by depth and breadth of Advent’s outreach and inclusiveness as I began to explore possibilities with Pastor Michael for a deacon internship here. This congregation’s welcome statement is a beautiful, powerful, and inspirational response to how Jesus has called all of us to serve the world:

We welcome all who are seeking God’s love and grace.

We welcome all because God welcomes us all, regardless of race or culture.

We welcome all because God welcomes all, regardless of physical or mental health, or ability.

We welcome all because God welcomes all, regardless of faith or religious background, agnosti-

cism, atheism, or independence of belief.

We welcome all because God welcomes all, regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity,

gender expression, or relationship status.

We welcome all without regard to addictions, imprisonment, socioeconomic circumstances, or

anything that may divide us. Our unity is in Christ.

We thus affirm that this welcome includes all people. We pledge ourselves and to all others that

we will strive to live as a reconciling and embracing people, in our life together and in our out-

reach to the world.

We welcome you without demand, presumption, or anything but invitation to be a part of our

community.

OUT …welcoming and

accepting all people…

LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR ANNIVERSARY

On 10-28-2017 our community took a stand for love. We stood together as one community reject-ing hate and proclaiming our community as a lov-ing and welcoming community to all.

A year later, we want to commemorate that date.

On Sunday 10-28 starting at 4 pm, we will hold the Love Your Neighbor picnic at the square with many educational and fun activities along with amazing food.
