The tact that oW' statementwill have a very great influence onthe freedom of Western EuropewUl, in my opinion, change thebishops in their thinking."

Archbishop HaMan was thenasked about the considerableinfluence in the formulation of thisproposed letter of a priest atnational headquarters namedBryan Hehir. (Father Hehir isdescribed by Catholic laytheologian Michael Novak as oneof the most powerful people in theCatholic Church.) .

Father Hehir is exceptionallyclever. For this proposed freeze

, letter was given to the press justone week before the n81ioQalelections. "

"I haven't spoken witb him,"replied Harman. "But to me, thisis like people in an ivory towerspeaking about a realistic world -without participating in. thatrealistic world. . . They do notremember tht World WEIr II wonback Europe's rreedom andprotected our freedom, too. Theydo not remember that we engagedin a solemn contract, the NATOtreaty, to preserve freedom, Theyhaven't considered that at all."

Chicago'S Archbishop JosephBernardin attracted enormousmedia coverage by telling a pressconference that the bishops wlilnot be "intimidated" by a letterfrom President Reagan's NationalSecurity CouncUor William Clark,in which Judge ClarlL a Catholiclayman, disagreed with thepropoaed. pastoral.

Durlng a later press conference, this oolumn asked:
