English language tuition

Every year the College's English LanguageUnit offers tuition in English to all overseasstudents. Classes are held on all threecampuses and the tuition is free to studentsof King's College.

The course includes tuition in both writtenand spoken aspects of the language and laysparticular emphasis on academic English,eg study skills, note-taking, written essaysand reports.

Thereafter classes will be held onWednesday afternoons and weekdayevenings at times to be mutually agreed bythe Course Director, Ms Susanne Eiliott,and the participating students.

The Central Registry is responsible for theformulation of policy and procedures insupport of student administration. It is theCollege's interface with UCCA, andreceives and distributes undergraduateapplication forms, and despatchesprospectuses in response to enquiries. Allmatters relating to postgraduate admissionsand enrolments are the responsibility of theOffice. The production of examinationpapers, the timetabling of examinations andthe organisation of the examinationsthemselves are handled through the Office.Central Registry works with the SchoolOffices to ensure the provision of supportand advice for students and to maintain up­to-date records.

Accommodation Office

The Accommodation Office deals with theallocation of places in all the King'sresidences (including those at WestfieldCollege) and a centralised waiting list ismaintained throughout the year (the mid­sessional waiting list opens on 15 October).

Applications for places in IntercollegiateHalls for the start of session are also proc­essed in the King's Accommodation Office.

Careers CounsellingCareers Advisers, Neil Harris,John Nicholles and Mary Baldwin, areavailable to be seen by appointment in theCareers Advisory Service at either theStrand or Kensington campuses. Appoint­ments can be made through the CareersInformation Assistants at the Strand(ext 2616) and Kensington (ext 4416).Careers Advisers are also available toanswer 'quick questions' withoutappointment from 16.00 to 17.00,Monday to Thursday. The offices of theCareers Advisory Service are open from09.30 to 17.30 in term time, closing at 17.00in vacations.

The Careers Advisory Service aims to helpstudents with their career decision-makingby providing careers counselling, informa­tion on a wide range of careers and post­graduate courses, and fostering contactswith prospective employers. A vast rangeof information about careers, courses,employers, vacation work, job vacanciesand many other subjects is available in theCareers Information rooms at the Strandcampus (third floor Macadam Building) andthe Registry Huts at Kensington.

A register of privately-let flats, houses andbedsit is updated each Friday, and lists ofagencies and hostels are also available topersonal callers at the Office.

The Accommodation Office runs twoproperty management schemes: the HeadLease staff manage privately owned,furnished property all over London forperiods of 9-12 months; the Short Life staffmanage unfurnished property awaitingrefurbishmem by their local authority orhousing association. Properties under thisscheme arc Ict on one month's notice.

Staff are always available to give advice andassistance on a wide range of housingenquiries including up-to-date informationon issucs of topical imerest.

Medical Services

The College requires all students to registerwith a local doctor upon arrival in London.This is the only method of guaranteeingmedical treatment in the case of an emer­gency.

The College has a Medical Officer, Dr FBavetta. He or his panners will be availableas follows:

Strand campusThe main College Medical Centre is on thethird floor, Macadam Building (quickestaccess via Surrey Street entrance). Surgeriesare held every day, and appointments can bemade via the Receptionist. A Nursing Sisteris in attendance daily from 09.00 to 16.30,eX[ 2613.

Kensington campusThe Medical Centre is located between thesquash courts and the Careers Huts.Surgeries are held every day, and appoint­ments can be made via the Nursing Sister,eX[ 4250 or by walking in.

Chelsea campusThe Medical Centre is on the GroundFloor, Main Building, Manresa Road. Thesurgery is open for limited hours only, andthe opening times will be posted outside theMedical Centre. Appointments can bemade via the Nursing Sister, ext 4863/4250.

In addition to a doctor's surgery, theMedical Centres also provide vaccinations,contraception, blood pressure checks, firstaid, health information, cervical smears andmany other services. Staff are welcome toregi ter with the College Doctor if they livein his catchment area.

Students living in halls of residence will begiven instructions on registering with a localdoctor by their Hall Warden/Manager,others should contact the Medical Centre.

Mobile Dental UnitA Mobile Dental Unit will visit the Strandcampus on Mondays (the van will be parkedin the Quad). The Dentist, Mr HenryGrunberg, offers a fully comprehensiveNHS service to all staff and students. Forappointments please telephone ext 2076(Mondays only) or 0831-258 589 (mobilephone).

Student Counselling Service

Counsellors work within Student Servicesand the Medical Centres on all threecampuses. Their aim is to enable studentsto make the most of the opponunitiesoffered at the College by helping them tocope with any problems or difficultieswhich may arise of a personal or emotionalnature.

There are four counsellors: Ann Conlon(Head of Student Services), ChristopherGibson and Glenys James are all qualifiedpsychotherapists; and Stephanie Griffiths,Student Adviser/Counsellor, is able to seestudents about a wide range of issues. Inaddition, there are two part-time psychia­trists, Dr Jane Milton and Dr PhiJip Boyd.

Strand campusAnn Conlon, Christopher Gibson, andGlenys James can be seen in the MedicalCentre, third floor, Macadam Building. DrsMilton and Boyd also attend on a part-timebasis, appointments: ext 26] 3. StephanieGriffiths works from Room 3E, CheshamBuilding, appointments and enquiries can bemade via Celia Cockburn, Room SEA,Chesham Building, ext 2530/2536.

Kensington campusA counsellor/psychotherapist will be avail­able usually by appointment on approxi­mately two days per week on the GroundFloor, Main Building. All appointmentsand enquiries for the Kensington campuscan be made either via the Nursing Sister inthe Kensington Medical Centre ext 4250 orfrom the Strand Medical Centre ext 2613.

Chelsea campusA counsellor/psychotherapist will beavailable usually by appointment one dayper week in the Medical Centre, GroundFloor, Room 53, Main Building, ManresaRoad (beside the Careers Office). Allappointments and enquiries for the Chelseacampus can be made by ringing ext 4863 ortelephoning the Strand Medical Centre.

Information and AdviceThe Student Services Welfare and Informa­tion Officer, Celia Cockburn, provides aninformation and welfare service across thethree campuses. She has experience inhelping students with general enquiries andwith financial, grant, visa and many othermatters.

At the Chelsea and Kensington campuses anumber of management changes have beenmade. David Pilchei, who has worked bothas Bars Manager and Assistant Manager atthe Chelsea campus, has been promoted toCampus Deputy Catering Manager; Genny]ohnson has been promoted to AssistantCatering Manager, Chelsea campus;Gordon Allen, who has worked both atChelsea and Kensington campuses, has beenpromoted to Campus Deputy CateringManager, Kensington; Val Kaye has beenpromoted to Assistant Catering Manager,Kensington campus.

CHAPLAINCY

The Chaplains are generally involved in allaspects of College life and are available to allmembers of College, students and staff, todiscuss any matters of personal concern. Soplease do not hesitate to contact anyone ofus if you feel we can be of any assistance.There is a team of Chaplains working on allthe College campuses and Christianmeetings and services take place throughoutthe College.

Microcomputers and WorkstationsAt the Strand, on the mezzanine floor offA-corridor, there are networks of nine IBMPSl2s in room 24AA and eight MacintoshlIs in room 24AF, and rooms dedicated tohumanities computing (24AD) and com­puter graphics (24AB). On the secondfloor, in rooms 22DA and 22DB, there arenetworks of 40 IBM-compatible ResearchMachines PC-386s with VGA colourdisplays and 16 Macintosh SE/30s respec­tively.

The IBM and Macintosh networks supportspreadsheet and database applications andmay be used for document production,ranging from simple word processing tofull-scale desk-top publishing, includingcharts and diagrams. The humanities com­puting room contains both IBM andMacintosh microcomputers with softwareof particular importance to staff andpostgraduates in the humanities depart­ments; the room also houses text scannersfor converting printed texts into electronicform for subsequent computer processing.In the graphics computing laboratory acluster of VAX workstations providesfacilities for running highly interactivegraphical programs such as CAD/CAMpackages.

The peripheraldevices Jttached to it include magnetic tapedrives, line printers, graph plotters, a highspeed Postscript laser-printer, and fullcolour electrostatic and ink-jet plotters.

The VI\X computers run under version 5.4of the VI\X/VMS operating system. Computing Centre CoursesThe Centre offers a wide range of courses tohelp staff and students to use its facilities.Some are taught formally, while others areself-paced and use a mixture of printed andcomputer based training materials and/oraudio/video tapes. The formally taughtcourses vary in length from a single after­noon to a week and provide an introductionto the computer systems and the mostwidely used applications products andprogramming languages.

The Liddell Hart Centre for MilitaryArchives holds the private papers of over350 20th century senior defence personnel.Individual collections include the papers ofSir Basil Liddell Hart, FM ViscountAlanbrooke and General Lord Ismay andinclude diaries, personal correspondence,

copies of official papers, unpublishedmemoirs, photographs and press cuttings.1\lso available is a growing collection ofmicrofilms of primarily American officialdocuments relating to defence. The BoerWar is strongly represented and there ismaterial from almost every major campaignin which British troops were involved, up toand including the Cyprus crisis in the 1960s.

Many significant collections reflect therevolution in weapon technology thiscentury an i the development of the nuclearissue, and in the papers of AVM SWBMenaul the clash of conflicting theories andupsurge oj public attention can be explored.

Reporting of accidents and injuriesMembers of the College are required toreport accidents which result in personalinjury and which occur on College premisesor in connection with College activities.Other incidents such as fires, spill ages ofharmful substances, etc, where injuriescould have resulted, should also bereported. Report forms are available fromdepartmental offices or the Safety Office;forms must be completed as soon aspossible after the incident and forwarded tothe College Safety Office. The College islegally obliged to report certain accidentsand incidents, and failure to do so is not

only a criminal offence but may haverepercussions for subsequent compensationclaims lodged against the College, anindividual or organisation.

Lists detailing the location and telephoneextensions of first aidel's are displayed inreception areas, on departmental noticeboards, and published in this issue ofComment. If a list is not immediatelyavailable, dial the appropriate internalemergency number and request a firstaider's assistance, giving the preciselocation of the casualty. The first aiderwill decide on necessary further actionand make the required arrangements;

• Taking the casualty to the site MedicalCentre, (subject to the opening hours ofmedical centres);

• In the event of a serious accident or lifethreatening injury, contact the appropri­ate internal emergency number andrequest immediate attendance from a firstaider or Medical Centre staff and an am­bulance. Give the precise location of thecasualty and a brief description of thesymptom(s); the operator will make thenecessary calls to emergency services.

Evacuation of the BuildingsWhen the alarm bells are sounded thebuilding must be evacuated without delay.Persons should leave by the nearest avail­

able exit and move well away from thebuilding. You should not re-enter thebuilding until the bells have been silenced orpermission has been granted by the SeniorFire Officer or College Officer present.Safe places of assembly in an emergency are
