In 1893, Katharine Lee Bates was a visiting professor of English literature in Colorado College’s Summer Session. Bates and a group of faculty members trav-eled by prairie wagon and mules to the summit of Pikes Peak. There, inspired by the magnificent panorama, the poet conceived the initial verses of “America, the Beautiful.” It was published in 1895 to national acclaim.

Frieda Ekotto ’86 is chair of the Department of Afroamerican and African Studies and

professor of comparative literature at the University of Michigan. As an intellectual historian and philosopher with areas of expertise in 20th and 21st-century Anglophone and Francophone literature and in the cinema of West Africa and its diaspora, she concentrates on contemporary issues of law, race, and LGBTQI issues. Her research focuses on how law serves to repress and mask the pain of disenfranchised subjects, and she traces what cannot be said in order to address and expose suffering from a variety of angles and cultural intersections, thus reassessing the position and agency of the dispossessed. In addition, she is also interested in examining the importance of Bandung as a cultural event and in the development of philosophical and political thought in the second half of the 20th century. She has published numerous literary journal articles and is the author of six books, including “What Color is Black? Race and Sex Across the French Atlantic” (Lexington Press, 2011), which concentrates on issues of race and the invention of the nègre. She is also co-author of “Rethinking African Cultural Production” (Indiana University Press, 2015).

She is the recipient of numerous grants and awards, including a Ford Foundation seed grant for research and collaborative work with institutions of higher learning in Africa and most recently a John H. D’Arms Faculty Award for Distinguished Graduate Mentoring in the Humanities at the University of Michigan. In 2014, she received the Nicolàs Guillén Award for the Caribbean Philosophical Association. In 2015, she received the Benezet Award from the Colorado College Alumni Association Board.

She produced the documentary film “Vibrancy of Silence: A Discussion with my Sisters” (2017).

Peggy Fleming Jenkins ’70 began skating at age 9 when her dad took her and her three sisters

to a public rink. She had a natural ability on the ice and entered her first competition, Juvenile Girls, in 1958. To her complete surprise, she won.

Unfortunately, in 1961, her skating coach William Kipp died in a plane crash along with the entire U.S. Figure Skating World Team. Fleming helped lead the rebuilding of American skating, winning her first national championships in 1964. Another significant milestone was being invited to train with Italian coach, Carlo Fassi, at the Broadmoor World Arena in Colorado Springs in 1965. She won her third U.S. title and her first world championship in 1966.

Fleming also enrolled as a part-time student at Colorado College and her courses were a welcome balance to the pressure of international competition. Training at the college’s outdoor Honnen Ice Arena helped prepare her for the world championships in Davos (1966) and Vienna (1967), which were held on outdoor arenas.

Fleming’s athletic, graceful, and elegant style eventually led to five U.S. titles, three world titles, and the gold medal in the 1968 Olympics in Grenoble, France.

Following her Olympic championship, she became a well-known commentator for ABC Sports/ESPN. In 1999, at Sports Illustrated’s “20th Century Awards,” Fleming was honored as one of seven “Athletes Who Changed The Game.”

In June 1970, Fleming married her teenage sweetheart Greg Jenkins ’67, who became a physician and dermatologist. They also opened and operated Fleming Jenkins Vineyards & Winery in the Santa Cruz Mountains of California.

Throughout her career, Fleming has contributed to philanthropic causes and helped to raise millions of dollars for many non-profit organizations. She faced a health challenge in 1998 when she was diagnosed with early breast cancer. Following her recovery, Fleming became a spokesperson for women’s health and the importance of early detection and regular checkups.
